John Ostrander

MASONVILLE — John Ostrander, 54, of Masonville, died unexpectedly on Friday, June 7, 2002, at his home.

He was born July 5, 1947, son of the late Carroll C. and Elva G. Seely Ostrander, in Bainbridge.

John served his country in the U.S. Army.

He was employed by Amphenol Corp. of Sidney.

John is survived by his son, Philip Ostrander and his fiancee, Melanie Zabriskie of Oxford; daughter and son-in-law, Stacey and Thomas Beebe of Bainbridge; brother and sister-in-law, William and Kaveda Ostrander of Afton; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Beverly and Robert Petley of DeRuyter and Jane and Pete Mckee of Saratoga Springs; grandchildren, Casey and Heather Steigerwald, Lucas Beebe, Kendra, Allysa and Seth Alan Ostrander and Ashley Bourn; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

He is also predeceased by a brother, Alan Ostrander.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 12, 2002, at the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St. in Sidney, with the Rev. Robert Howard, pastor of the Masonville Federated Church, officiating.

Interment will be in Masonville Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Masonville Emergency Squad.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers, Inc., Sidney.

Ronald E. Rowley

ONEONTA — The Hon. Ronald E. Rowley, 81, of Oneonta, died Saturday, June 8, 2002, at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown,

Judge Rowley was born on July 20, 1920, in Marvin Hollow, near Walton. He was the son of Leon and Flora Benedict Rowley.

He attended a one-room school house in Marvin Hollow and was a graduate of Walton High School, Hartwick College and Syracuse University Law School.

He and Marjorie Smith of West Oneonta, his beloved wife of 51 years, were married on June 26, 1950.

During World War II, Judge Rowley left Hartwick College to enlist in the Army Air Force in 1942. He served as a first lieutenant in the 8th Air Force, flying 34 combat missions over Germany as a navigator-bombardier on a B-17 Flying Fortress from a base in England. His decorations included the Air Medal with five clusters and the Presidential Unit Citation Badge.

Following the war, Judge Rowley returned to Hartwick College, graduating in 1946. He then attended Syracuse University Law School, graduating in 1949, and was admitted to the New York State Bar.

He practiced law in Oneonta from 1949 to 1951, when he returned to active duty as an air judge advocate with the U.S. Air Forces in Europe, attaining the rank of captain.

In 1952, he returned to the private practice of law in an office he opened on Dietz Street in Oneonta, adjacent to the medical practice of his brother Dr. C. Douglas Rowley, who predeceased him.

In 1959, he was elected Oneonta city judge and served in that office until 1968. He was engaged in the private practice of law in Oneonta until 1999, when he retired after a legal career of 50 years.

Judge Rowley served as a member and chairman of the Hartwick College Board of Trustees and as the college attorney.

He was a past member of numerous civic and professional organizations, including Kiwanis, the board of directors of the Red Cross, the Hartwick College Citizens Board, the board of directors of the Oneonta Savings and Loan and the Oneonta, Otsego County, New York State and American Bar Associations.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church for more than 50 years.

Judge Rowley was also an avid artist, having studied with Emile Gruppe of Rockport, Mass., and Peter Ottzen of Oneonta.

He was a private pilot, owning a plane for many years and obtaining a commercial pilot's license.

He enjoyed gardening, hiking and fishing trips with his family.

Judge Rowley is survived by his wife, Marjorie Smith Rowley; his three sons, Edward Rowley and his wife, Jean Ghezzi, of Niskayuna, William Rowley and his wife, Jean, of Brockport, and John Rowley and his wife, Maureen, of Cooperstown; his brothers, the Rev. Donald Rowley of Nashua, N.H., and Dr. Durwood Rowley and his wife, Shirley, of Millis, Mass.; eight grandchildren, Adrienne, Kristina, Andrew, Lindsay, Laura, Hannah, Michael and Edward; 20 nieces and nephews; and seven sisters and brothers-in-law.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, June 13, 2002, at the First United Methodist Church, 66 Chestnut St., Oneonta.

Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, June 12, 2002, at the Bookhout Funeral Home, Main Street, Oneonta. Interment will be at the Glenwood Cemetery, Oneonta.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hartwick College, Oneonta, NY 13820 or the First United Methodist Church, 66 Chestnut St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Walton T. Dauchy

BURLINGTON FLATS — Walton Talbot Dauchy, 76, of Burlington Flats, died Sunday, June 9, 2002.

He was born July 25, 1925, in the town of Burlington, the eldest son of Myron David and Margaret Ellen (Crumb) Dauchy.

He was a graduate of Edmeston Central School, Class of 1942.

He married Evelyn Mattison on Nov. 8, 1943, in the Baptist Parsonage in Burlington Flats.

He served his country during World War II in the U.S. Army, joining "Patton's Army" through the Battle of the Bulge, liberating the famous Lipazzaner horses. He marched through Europe and ended in Austria, receiving the Bronze Star for his actions. He remained in Europe for another year helping displaced people find their way home.

He returned home to help his father in the Burlington Flats Sawmill, until Hartwick College called him back to school, where he attained his bachelor of science degree. He continued his education at the State University College at Oneonta, where he attained his master's degree.

His joy was teaching young people at Morris and Oneonta schools. Walton took great pride in teaching history and making it come alive and be meaningful. He was chosen to mentor and teach children with problems learning, emphasizing old-fashioned work ethics and values to reach their potential.

He was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting and fishing all of his life.

He was a former member of "The Farmers Lodge," F.&A.M. of Edmeston.

Walton is survived by his wife, "Marv" Evelyn M. Dauchy, of 58 years; his son, David Myron Dauchy and wife, Kathryn, and their son, Todd and wife, Nicole, and their children, Megan and Bryan; a son, Robert George Dauchy and sons, Timothy, Daniel and Andrew; a son, Walton Frederick Dauchy and his son, Travis, and daughter, Brenda; a daughter, JoAnne Deller and her husband, Russell, and their son, Christopher, and daughter and husband, Loralei and Phineas Marr, and their daughter and husband, Amy and Rodger Pape Jr.; two sisters, Janet Baulch and her husband, Richard, and their children, Shari Lou Baulch McConnell and husband, Michael, and Gregg Baulch and his wife, Lynn and their children, Jake and Hannah, and MaryLou Dauchy.

He was predeceased by his brother, Jack; and his special aunt, Eloise Crumb, "Aunt Ellie."

Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, June 15, 2002, at the Dauchy residence in Burlington Flats.

Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family.

Friends are asked to please attend the graveside services with military honors, that will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 16, 2002, in the Burlington Flats Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, friends are asked to consider donations to the Town of Burlington Veterans Memorial Park for a special memorial dedicated to Walton Talbot Dauchy.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Charles Y. Barr

NEW BERLIN — Charles Yerger Barr, 78 years, of New Berlin, passed away Saturday, June 8, 2002, in New Berlin.

He was born July 8, 1923, in Bronxville, the son of James and Eva (Yerger) Barr.

He married Joan Biggar on Nov. 16, 1946, in Scarsdale. She survives.

He went to R.I.T. in Rochester, where he studied printing.

Charles served his country in the U.S. Marines during World War II at Kwajalein in the Marshall Islands as well as Marianas, Saipan and Tinian. He received the Bronze Star for action in Iwo Jima.

He is survived by his sons, Michael Barr, Bedminster, N.J., and Jeffrey Barr, Gainsville, Fla.; one sister, Louise Tuttle, East Moriches; one brother, William Barr, Hingham, Mass.

He was predeceased by one brother, James Barr; and two sisters, Marjorie Kipniss and Jane Barr.

He was the production manager for Lawrence Printing in Morris, N.J.; printing superintendent at SORG in New York City; worked for International Coin & Currency in Montpelier, Vt.; production manager for North Light Studio Press in Barre, Vt.; production manager for Wall Street Production in Hoboken, N.J.

Calling hours will be from 10 to 11 a.m. preceding the service at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, New Berlin.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. on Tuesday, June 11, 2002 at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, New Berlin, with the Rev. Charles  Taylor of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church officiating.

Interment will be in the St. Andrew's Cemetery, New Berlin.

Arrangements are by the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin.

Inga A. Taylor

JEFFERSON — Memorial services for Inga A. Taylor, 87, who passed away on April 17, 2002, will be held 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 15, 2002, at the Brimstone Methodist Church on Blenheim Hill Road, going out of  Jefferson toward Stamford, Route 13, Shue Hallow Road. Services held by former student Barry Graham.

Contributions may be made in memory of Inga A.  Taylor Scholarship Fund,  Jefferson Central School, 1332 State Route No. 10,  Jefferson NY 12093 or to the SEPA Alzheimer's Association, 325 Chestnut St., Suite 1120, Philadelphia, PA 19106.

Ralph M. Davidson

SOUTH KORTRIGHT — Ralph Maynard Davidson, 90, passed away Monday, June 10, 2002, at Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown.

He was a lifelong resident of South Kortright, son of John Davidson and Ada Kingsley Davidson, born on March 21, 1912.

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Eleanor (Knight) Davidson, after 53 years of marriage. Their three children also survive him - Thomas Kingsley Davidson and his wife, Marcia, daughter, Elizabeth Ann (Betsy) Morales and her fiance, Neil Haynes, and son Walter Davidson. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Betsy Davidson Morgan and husband, Roger Paul Morgan, Robert Davidson, Amber Davidson, David Morales, Christina Riley and her husband, Brian Riley and John Morales. There are also three great-grandchildren, Breanna Riley,  Taylor Riley and  Taylor Morgan; and several cousins.

He was predeceased by a brother, Edgar Lawrence Davidson.

During World War II, Ralph served in the 101st Airborne and took part in the Invasion at Utah Beach and in the Battle of the Bulge at Bastogne.

He was a member of the American Legion. After the war he returned home and ran his family's general store. Later he was an employee of the State of New York in the South Kortright Center for Boys, now the Allen Center.

He was a lifelong member and life elder of the South Kortright United Presbyterian Church.

During his life he was an enthusiastic gardener. He enjoyed traveling and toured 48 states after retirement. He had many friends in Arizona, where he wintered for many years.

He will be missed by friends and family at home.

Memorial services will take place at 2 p.m. on Thursday, June 13, 2002, at the South Kortright Community Church, with the Rev. Karen Porto, pastor, officiating. Burial will be at Valley View Cemetery, South Kortright, at the convenience of the family.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Gordon L. Bennett

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. — Gordon L. Bennett, 87, most recently of New Smyrna Beach, Fla., and formerly of  Jefferson, N.Y., died Saturday, June 8, 2002, at the Hospice of Volusia/Flagler in Port Orange, Fla.

For many years, Mr. Bennett worked for Hollbrook and Howey, as a service repairman and for the past several years has spent time between New York and Florida.

He was predeceased by his wife, Mary Elizabeth (Betty) Bennett; and all of his sisters and brothers, Doris Stranagan, Eloise Grummons, Frednetha Goodchild, Kenneth Bennett, Gerald Bennett and Frederick Bennett.

He is survived by his daughters, Barbara Orcutt of Liverpool, Joan Allen of North Syracuse, Connie Hurley of Melbourne, Fla., and Sandra Keator of Southbury, Conn. He is also survived by his stepsons, Henry Rupp of St. Cloud, Fla., and Thomas Rupp of Hawaii. Mr. Bennett had 14 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, June 14, 2002, in the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Kenneth Baldwin officiating.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, at which time the family will be in attendance.

Memorial contributions may be made to a favorite charity.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummous Funeral Home, Oneonta.
