Virginia Simpkins

EAST HAVEN, Conn. — Virginia Simpkins, 94, of East Haven, Conn., and formerly of Oneonta, N.Y., passed away Sunday, June 9, 2002, at the Brandford Hills Health Care Center, Brandford, Conn., after a lengthy illness.

She was born March 9, 1908, in Elkins, W.Va., daughter of William and Lillian (Young) Packer.

She married Clifford G. Simpkins on Nov. 16, 1941, in Hagerstown, Md. He predeceased her Oct. 4, 1957.

She was a housewife. She has been a resident of East Haven since 1986, and previously resided in Schenectady, N.Y., and Oneonta, N.Y.

She was a former member of the First United Methodist Church of Oneonta.

She is survived by a daughter, Nancy McNichol of East Haven, Conn.; three sisters, Ruth Molineux of Sidney, N.Y., Jean Tremper and Doris Gallagher, both of Oneonta; a grandson, Johnathan McNichol; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, June 14, 2002, at the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta, with the Rev. William D. Bouton, pastor of the First United Methodist Church, officiating.

There will be no calling hours.

Arrangements are by the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, Oneonta.

August Kehr

UNADILLA — Dr. August E. Kehr passed away Sept. 27, 2001.

August Kehr was born in Frankfort, Ky., on March 2, 1914. He was the youngest of seven children born to Carl Adolph Kehr and Anna Heller Kehr. The family moved to a farm near Unadilla when August was very young.

He taught vocational agriculture and general science at Unadilla High School from 1936 until 1942.

He married another Unadilla High School teacher, Mary Louise Coon.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Louise Kehr, of Cedar Falls, Iowa; a daughter, Janet Flick and her husband, Charles, also of Cedar Falls; two grandsons, Robert Flick of Los Angeles,  Calif., and William Flick of Huxley, Iowa; and a great-granddaughter, McKenzie Flick of Huxley, Iowa. He is also survived by a niece, Jeanne Micha of Vestal, N.Y.; and a nephew, Lance Greve of Highland, Ill.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers and sisters, Edward Kehr, Esther Squires, Carl Kehr, John Kehr, Emma (Babe) Greve and William Kehr; and one nephew, Richard Kehr.

A graveside memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 15, 2002, at the Evergreen Hills Cemetery, Unadilla, with the Rev. Allen Presby officiating.

Beatrice Seifried

FRANKLIN — A service to celebrate the life of Beatrice "Trixie" Seifried, who died on May 1, 2002, will be held 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 15, 2002, in the Franklin United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Dr. Lyle Linder officiating.

Arrangements are with the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin.

Edward H. Meyers

NEW BERLIN — Edward H. Meyers, 86, of New Berlin and formerly of Holly Hill, Fla., died peacefully on Thursday morning, June 13, 2002, at The Meadows Nursing Home in Cooperstown, where he lived for the past two years.

Ed was born on March 2, 1916, in Corbitt, to John and Carry Meyers.

Ed is predeceased by all of his brothers and sisters, John, George, Leonard, Merritt (Doc), Vincent, Constance Moore, Myrtle Beadle and Lillian Biviano.

He married Anne Nahlik of Edmeston in December 1945 in Joplin, Mo. Anne died in 1985.

He served four years in the Army during World War II in the China-Burma-India Campaign. He was very proud to have served his country and had many stories to share. He was honorably discharged at the rank of master sergeant.

Ed and Anne owned several businesses in and around New Berlin. The local dry cleaners, a dairy farm, Five Corners Body Shop and the 8+80 Diner at their five-corners residence.

He is survived by his four children, Donna Crawford of San Antonio, Del Meyers of Burlington Flats, Dolores Janssen of Burlington Flats and Daren Meyers of Vero Beach, Fla. He is also survived by 10

grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Ed enjoyed cooking for many fund-raisers for different groups — from pancakes to barbecue chicken and sausage sandwiches at Youth Days.

A past member of the NB Fish & Game Club, he enjoyed fishing and hunting and could be found months in advance making plans for family vacations up north! He was also a member of the American Legion and the Eagles Club, where he held offices in both organizations.

Friends and family may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Monday, June 17, 2002, at the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin.

The burial will be private for Ed's relations at the Fairview Cemetery, with the Rev. John Young of the Old Stone Church, Schuyler Lake, officiating.

In lieu of flowers, please send memorial donations to: The Meadows, 140 County Highway 33W, Cooperstown, NY 13326; care of the Dementia Ward.

Richard L. Weir Sr.

MILFORD CENTER — Richard L. Weir Sr., 83, passed away June 12, 2002, at Albany Medical Center, Albany.

He was born March 12, 1919, in Oneonta, the son of James and Margaret Whipple Weir.

He attended and graduated from the local schools as he was an area resident for the past 54
years.

Dick worked at United Aircraft — Hamilton Standard Division at East Hartford, Conn., and the Lynn Plant at Oneonta as a tool and die maker.

He was employed for many years at Stevens Hardware in Oneonta.

He was an avid hunter, fly fisherman and professional fly dresser and his family was his life. In recent years he was a die-hard Yankee fan.

He was active in many local organizations: past president of America Waterworks Association; trustee and past president of Milford Macs; active member and offices of Klipnocie Beagle Club; co-founder of Milford Little League in 1963; former town of Milford supervisor 1970-1972; and Trout Unlimited.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Dorothy Weir; one daughter, Donna and Ross Jones, Richfield Springs; two sons, Richard and Bonnie Weir, Hobart, and James and Cynthia Weir, Maryland; one brother, John N. and Frances Weir, Oneonta; six granddaughters; two grandsons; three great-grandsons; several nieces and nephews; and two brothers-in-law, Joseph Smith and Philip Smith.

He was predeceased by a brother, Alfred Weir; and sister-in-law, Marjorie Reichard.

Funeral services for Mr. Weir will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 15, 2002, at the Milford Methodist Church, with the Rev. Robert Kazinski officiating. Interment will follow in the Milford Center Cemetery.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, June 14, 2002, at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home, Milford, when the family will be in attendance.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Francis T. Hull

PRATTSVILLE — Francis T. Hull, 88, of  Johnson Hollow Road, Prattsville, passed away Thursday, June 13, 2002, at his residence.

He was born Jan. 4, 1914, in Ashland, the son of W. Bruce and Emily (Thompson) Hull.

He married Marguerite VanValkenburgh on May 1, 1937, in Prattsville.

He graduated from Grand Gorge Central School in 1932.

He was a dairy farmer until 1965. He was the former Roxbury town assessor, New York state meat inspector, retiring in 1975.

He served on the Grand Gorge School Board of Education.

He was a member of the Prattsville United Methodist Church, where he served in the office of treasurer, trustee and church board member.

Francis enjoyed gardening.

Francis is survived by his wife, Marguerite Hull, Prattsville; son, Francis V. Hull and daughter-in-law, Donna Hull, son, James B. Hull and daughter-in-law, Roberta Hull; daughter, Beverly A. Gockel and son-in-law, Charles Gockel; grandchildren, Michael Hull, Brenda and Peter Dzwonkas, James D. Hull, Beverly and Scott Haskin, Machelle and Richard Haight, David and Terri Gockel, Deborah and Joseph McMullen and Charles B. and Tracy Gockel; great-grandchildren, Nathan, Hannah Carina, Kayla, Josephine, Scott, Bryan, Brandon, Adam, Nicole, Charlene, Danielle, Kali, Jacob, Gabrielle, Naomi, Abigail, Lydia, Jessica and Sarah; and one brother, Theodore F. Hull, Cobleskill.

He was predeceased by his brother, Robert B. Hull Sr.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 15, 2002, in the United Methodist Church, Prattsville, with the Rev. Elliot Oakes and the Rev. Ellen Oliveto officiating.

Burial will be in the Fairlawn Cemetery, Prattsville.

Calling hours will be held 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, June 14, 2002, at the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury.

Contributions in memory of Francis T. Hull may be made to the Memorial Fund of the United Methodist Church, Prattsville, NY.

Arrangements by the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury.

Earl T. Blanchard

BOVINA — Earl T. Blanchard, 75, of Bovina, passed away on Wednesday, June 12, 2002, at Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown, where he had been a patient since May 27.

The son of Thomas and Bertha (McDonald) Blanchard, he was born Feb. 4, 1927, in Hartford, Conn., and served during World War II in the U.S. Navy as a Fireman 1st Class aboard the USS Astoria in the Pacific, until his honorable discharge in 1946.

Formerly of Orange County, Earl was employed by IBM in Poughkeepsie, where he was a tool and die maker by trade, retiring in 1982, when he moved to Andes, where he lived for 18 years, moving to Bovina three years ago.

Earl loved the outdoors and was especially fond of hunting, fishing and long walks.

Surviving are his wife of 51 years, Florence (Stvan) Blanchard, at home; a daughter and son-in-law, Jeanette and Keith Powell, and grandson, Andrew Powell, all of Corinth; a sister, Laura Zaloga, and brother, Caryl Blanchard.

There are no calling hours, and services will be private at the convenience of the family.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet & Son, Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi.

Shannon M. Ramp

HOBART — Shannon M. Ramp, 26, of Hobart, died Wednesday, June 12, 2002, in Hobart.

He was born in Stamford on Aug. 28, 1975, the son of Terry Ramp and Rosemarie Goodspeed.

He was a graduate of South Kortright Central School and currently employed at WS Hinkley and Sons, Inc. of Grand Gorge, which suited him so well as it allowed him to do what he really enjoyed, working on cars.

Shannon loved his family and the time he spent with them.

He is survived by his mother, Rosemarie Gutliph of Delhi; three sisters, Michelle Ramp and Tara Ramp of Stamford and Jessica Gutliph of Delhi; his maternal grandparents, Rod and Margaret Hillis of Hobart; his paternal grandparents, Walter and Beatrice Ramp of Florida; his special friend, Tracy Robinson; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

His father, Terry Ramp predeceased him.

Memorial services will take place at 3 p.m. on Sunday, June 16, 2002, at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart, with the Rev. Elliott Oakes officiating.

There will be no calling hours.

Contributions in his memory may be made to the Hobart Fire Department Rescue Squad.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.
