Thomas E. Reilly

COOPERSTOWN — Thomas Edward Reilly, 68, of Cooper Place in Cooperstown, died Tuesday morning, June 18, 2002, at The Meadows.

Edward was born on April 1, 1934, in Port Chester, a son of Thomas and Margaret Byrnes Reilly.

He attended George  Washington Elementary School in Port Chester and then entered Don Bosco Seminary in Newton, N.J., where he completed his high school education.

After attending Iona College in New Rochelle, he moved to Cooperstown in 1953 and lived with relatives at Fairview Farm in Pierstown where he assisted in farm work.

Upon the death of his great uncle Charles E. Knowlton in 1960, Edward assumed partnership of Fairview Farm with his great aunt, Harriet Drake Knowlton, operating it until the cows were sold in 1974.

The following spring he came under the employment of Mrs. Joseph Campbell until 1979, when he entered into employment at the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown. He was involved with the housekeeping department until his retirement on May 1, 1996.

An active and devoted communicant at St. Mary's "Our Lady of the Lake" Catholic Church in Cooperstown, Edward, in his humble way, acted as the Lord's servant around the church complex.

His love of dairy farming and rural life led to his roles in Grange activities. He was a member and past master of Pierstown Grange No. 793, P.O.H. — serving as master for six years — and was also a Seventh Degree member of the National Grange.

Edward is survived by two sisters and one brother-in-law, Margaret Reilly Antalec and her husband, Joseph, and Mary Helen Reilly Cooke, all of Port Chester; his aunt, with whom he made his home, Katharine B. Hanor of Cooperstown; and several cousins, including Richard Richardson and his wife, Diane, of Winter Park, Fla., and Cooperstown and James Byrnes of Cooperstown.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Stephen Reilly, who died in 1992.

The Rite of Reception of the Body and the Vigil Service will take place at St. Mary's "Our Lady of the Lake" Catholic Church in Cooperstown, with Fr. Andrew W. Cryans, visiting priest, officiating at 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 20, 2002. Edward will then lie in state in the church sanctuary, with his family receiving friends until 9 p.m. that evening.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 21, 2002, at St. Mary's "Our Lady of the Lake" Catholic Church in Cooperstown, with Fr. John P. Rosson, pastor, presiding and Fr. John R. Roos, pastor emeritus, and Fr. Andrew W. Cryans, as concelebrants. The Rite of Committal and Burial will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery, Index.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

GILBERTSVILLE — Margaret P. Moore, 93, retired historian and high school teacher, died in Chambersburg, Pa., on March 17, 2002.

Margaret, known to her friends as "Peg," was a daughter of longtime Gilbertsville merchant and funeral director J. Merton Moore and his wife Helen Palmer Moore.

She was a graduate of the old Gilbertsville High School and of Wilson College in Chambersburg, Pa. After graduation, she returned to Gilbertsville to teach history at the high school. A few years later, she moved to Massena, where she taught history until her retirement.

Peg was co-chairman, with Anne G. Mangold, of the Committee for Historic Preservation from 1972 to 1981 and chairman from 1981-1991. During that time, structural inventories for every property in the village were prepared, as well as inventories of each park, cemetery and bridge. There were more than 200 nominations in all. In 1983 National Register of Historic Places Certification for the entire village was received. Additional recognition for an expanded district was received several years later.

In addition to her work with the National Register Nomination process, Peg was appointed as town historian in 1984 and continued in that position until her retirement in 1991.

A life member of the Gilbertsville Free Library, Peg served as a trustee for 10 years and as secretary for some years. She was appointed as the first archivist of the Local History Collection at the library and held that position until her retirement in 1991.

Peg was a life member of the Presbyterian Church of Gilbertsville. When she returned to Gilbertsville in 1972, she became an active member of the Women's Association of the church.
