Alta M. Harrington

SCHENEVUS — Alta M. Harrington, 74, died Thursday, July 11, 2002, at her home.

She was born Feb. 20, 1928, in Westville, the daughter of Lorenzo and Cora (Coger) Clapper.

She married Robert Mills Harrington on June 18, 1946.

Mrs. Harrington was a life resident who attended the Westville Baptist Church.

She is survived by her husband, Robert of Schenevus; three sons, Glenn and Amy Harrington of Otego, Darrell and Phyllis Harrington of Duncan, Okla., and Frederick Harrington of Schenevus; a daughter, Patricia Harrington of Schenevus; five brothers, Claude and Patty Clapper of Canajoharie, Clark and Sue Clapper of Springfield, Conn., Gordon and Sharon Clapper of Altamont, David and Ruth Clapper of Oxford, Ala., and Ray George Clapper of Amsterdam; a sister, Jean Handy of East Worcester; nine grandchildren, Cindy, Melinda, Kim, Marc, Christina, Amber, Kelley, Stacey and Kyle, and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her three sisters, Mildred, Dorothy and Golda Mae.

Calling hours will be held Monday, July 15, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. with the family in attendance from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Heller Funeral Home in Schenevus.

The funeral service will be 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 16, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Jay P. Henderson, chaplain at Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care Inc.

Contributions may be made in loving memory of Mrs. Harrington to the Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Funeral arrangements are by the Heller Funeral Home, 25 Arch St., Schenevus.

Francis E. Kubis

MIDDLEFIELD — Mr. Francis E. Kubis, 75, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, July 9, 2002, at his residence.

He was born July 14, 1926, in Keainey, Pa., the son of Michael J. and Mary (Sczesny) Kubis.

Mr. Kubis was a graduate of the Class of 1943 at Cherry Valley High School. He was a retired dairy farmer and had worked for the Otesaga Resort Hotel in Cooperstown.

He was a member of the Fenimore Art Museum, The Farmers' Museum, New York State Historical Association and the Metropolitan Opera Guild. He was also a member and past master of the Westville Grange, was on the Middlefield Town Board and was the town of Middlefield historian.

Mr. Kubis was well-known for his rose gardens.

He is survived by two brothers and their wives, Andrew J. and Joan Kubis of Middlefield, Joseph A. and Helen Kubis of Barneveld; a sister, Victoria V. Maker of Lewiston, Mich.; two sisters-in-law, Stella Atwood and Louise Kubis of Schenevus, and in many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, July 15, at 11 a.m. in St. Thomas Roman Catholic Church in Cherry Valley.

Burial will follow in the Cherry Valley Cemetery in Cherry Valley.

Calling hours will be held Sunday, July 14, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Ottman Funeral Home in Cherry Valley.

Contributions in memory of Mr. Kubis may be made to St. Thomas Church in Cherry Valley.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home of Cherry Valley.

Robert E. Reed

VORHEESVILLE — Dr. Robert E. Reed, Ph.D., 73, of Vorheesville, died Monday, July 1, 2002, at Hospice Inn, St. Peter's Hospital, Albany, after a short illness.

Born in Flint, Mich., son of the late Samuel H. and Mary Reed, he lived in Vorheesville since 1979.

After serving in the Army Air Corps from 1946 to 1949, he earned his bachelor of science and master of arts degrees from Columbia University, New York City. Later, he was awarded a doctorate of philosophy in mathematics from the State University of New York at Binghamton. He was an associate professor of mathematics and computer science at State University College at Oneonta, before retiring in 1991. He belonged to the American Mathematical Society and Mathematical Association of America.

He was a former member of Albany Musicians Association Local 14, played trumpet and vibraphone with numerous local groups and led the Original Swing Band and the Contemporary Jazz Trio for a number of years.

He is survived by his wife, Florence Reimer Reed; two children, David Reed of Buffalo, N.Y., and Laura Walsh of Billerica, Mass., a granddaughter, Sarah Walsh; and three cousins.

A memorial celebration will be held at a later date.

Charles Benintende

WALTON — Charles C. Benintende, 81, of Walton, died at Mountainside Residential Care Center in Margaretville.

Charles was born Feb. 4, 1921, in New York City, the son of Joseph and Mary (Rossi) Benintende. He was married to Beatrice Sialiano who predeceased him many years ago.

He was employed as a maintenance man for the New Jersey State Police. After retiring in 1985, he moved to Walton.

Surviving are his sister, Rose Gargiulo of Brooklyn; a sister-in-law, Betty Benintende of Walton; and many nieces and nephews. His brother, Michael Benintende, predeceased him in 1994.

A mass of Christian burial will be held on Monday, July 15, at 10 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church in Walton with the Rev. Joseph Benintende officiating.

Burial will follow in Walton Cemetery.

Friends may call at Clark and Winter Funeral Home in Walton on Sunday where the family will be in attendance from 6 to 8 p.m.

Leslie J. Rivino

MERIDEN, Conn. — Leslie J. Rivino, 57, of Meriden, Conn., passed away suddenly, Sunday, July 7, 2002.

Formerly of Oneonta, he was the son of Peter A. Rivino and Madge (Perry) Rivino.

Leslie attended Oneonta schools and served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam era.

He is survived by his wife, Sharon Ruth Rivino; one son, Leslie Jr.; and three daughters, Laurie, Lisa and Heather, all of Connecticut. Also surviving are three brothers and two sisters, Peter Rivino of Unadilla, David Rivino of Otego, Anthony Rivino of  South Carolina, Carol Lester of Sidney and Vivian Warden of Neversink; along with several nieces, nephews, cousins, grandchildren, brothers and sisters-in-law.

Louise M. Friedel

WEST ONEONTA — Louise M. Friedel, 91, of West Oneonta, died Friday, July 12, 2002, at the A.O. Fox Nursing Home in Oneonta.

She was born July 23, 1910, in Hobart, the daughter of William R. and Edna (Hinman) Pearsall.

She married Louis A. Friedel Sr. on Jan. 9, 1927, at the First United Methodist Church in Oneonta. Mr. Friedel predeceased her on May 24, 1993.

Louise grew up in the Hobart area. Later her family moved to Oneonta and eventually she moved to West Oneonta where she resided for 66 years.

During World War II she worked at the Mica plant in Oneonta. She later worked in the kitchen at the Homer Folks Hospital in Oneonta.

She was a member of the West Oneonta Baptist Church, where she was a member of the women's society and also worked in the nursery. She was a member of the West Oneonta Fire Department Women's Auxiliary.

Louise enjoyed baking, taking care of children and most of all spending time with her family. She will be deeply missed by her family and many friends.

She is survived by her four children and their spouses, Louis A. and Barbara Friedel Jr. of Macon, Ga., Norma and Gordon Hyatt of Jamesville, Paula and Ralph Van Loan of Unadilla, and Walter Friedel of West Oneonta; her son-in-law, John Benson of Watervliet; 15 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Louise was predeceased by her two daughters and a son-in-law, Ruth L. and Leonard Hitt and Barbara Benson; her granddaughter, Cheryl Hitt Wayman; and her five sisters, Alice Acheson, Louella Kipp, Anna Beers, Genevive Pearsall and Caroline Pearsall.

A service to celebrate the life of Louise M. Friedel will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 16, 2002, at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St. in Oneonta, with the Rev. Tim Thurber, pastor of the West Oneonta Baptist Church and the Rev. John Dougherty, retired pastor of the West Oneonta Baptist Church, officiating.

Burial will be held in the Greenlawn Cemetery in Bainbridge, at the convenience of the family.

There will be no calling hours.

It has been requested that in lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to either the West Oneonta Fire Department, West Oneonta, NY 13861 or to the St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 in loving memory of Louise M. Friedel.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Lolita V. Clark

HARTWICK — Mrs. Lolita V. Clark, 79, of Weeks Road in Hartwick, died on Saturday afternoon, July 13, 2002, at her home.

Lolita was born on June 19, 1923, in Hartwick, a daughter of Arthur and Ora (Weeks) Mead.

She married Stanley G. Clark on March 5, 1946, in the First Methodist Church in Oneonta.

Raised in Hartwick, Lolita graduated from Hartwick High School with the Class of 1941.

During the early 1940s, she served for a year as a cadet in the United States Nurses Corps, but returned to Hartwick where she came under the employ of Chester J. Winslow Jr., Esq., and was the secretary for his law practice.

Through the years, Lolita also was employed by the Hartwick National Bank as a teller and as a ward clerk for the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown. Until her retirement, she served for 10 years as the court clerk for the town of Hartwick under town Justices Richard Thompson and Peter Sorbera Jr.

A member of the Hartwick United Methodist Church, Lolita was also a member of the women's auxiliary of the Milford American Legion Post No. 1566. She was formerly a member of the women's auxiliary of the Sgt. Walter P. Eggleston Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 7128 in Cooperstown and the Richfield Springs Lioness Club.

Lolita is survived by her husband of 56 years, Stan, of Hartwick; four daughters, Terrie McPhail and her husband, Kenneth, of Hartwick, Lynette M. Dibble of Richfield Springs, Colleen Vesely and her husband, Michael, of Springfield, and Sheila Shaul of Hartwick; 13 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 16, 2002, at the Hartwick United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Roger G. Yoder, pastor, officiating.

Immediately following the services on Tuesday, all attending are invited to join Lolita's family for a time of refreshment and fellowship in the Fellowship Hall at the church.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. today, July 15, 2002, at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown, when Lolita's family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

John Philip Baker

LAKE DELAWARE — John Philip Baker, 69, of Fisk Road, Lake Delaware (town of Bovina), passed away Friday, July 12, 2002, at his home from ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease).

The son of Henry O. and Agnes ( White) Baker, he was born Jan. 23, 1933, in Belmont, Mass., and received a bachelor of arts degree from Boston University in 1955, an MLS from Columbia University in 1965 and an MA from New York University in 1984.

Before moving to Lake Delaware in 1994, Phil lived in New York City for 40 years, and worked as a librarian in the New York Public Library.

A member of St. James Episcopal Church in Lake Delaware, Phil was vice chairman of the Parish Council, chairman of the recent Search Committee and church archivist. He was also vice president and member of the Board of Trustees of the Bovina Public Library, a longtime member of the American Library Association, Beta Phi Mu fraternity, and Archons of Colophon.

Surviving are his friend and companion, John F. Loseth of Lake Delaware; a sister, Cleverly Weitemeyer of East Greenwich, R.I.; a brother, Henry Baker of California; and several nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews.

Services will be at 4 p.m. Sunday, July 21, at St. James Episcopal Church in Lake Delaware, where a Requiem Mass will be celebrated by the Rev. Jason Catania, assisted by the Rev. Ray L. Donahue, and burial will follow in the Lake Delaware Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made in Phil's name to the St. James Episcopal Church Memorial Fund, Lake Delaware.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet & Son, Delhi.

Joseph H. Eiholzer

COLUMBUS — Joseph H. Eiholzer, 51, of Columbus, died Sunday, July 14, 2002 at his home in the town of Columbus.

He was born Dec. 20, 1950, in Columbus to Carl and Ruth Eiholzer.

Joseph spent his childhood in the town of New Berlin and the town of Columbus and graduated in the Class of 1968 from New Berlin Central School.

He began working for the Chenango County Highway Department in 1969 and was the foreman for the past five years.

Joseph was a member of the Saint Andrew's Episcopal Church of New Berlin, where he served as an usher.

Joseph enjoyed hunting, fishing and trapping and collected hunting and trapping equipment. He is a life time member of the NRA and National Trappers Association.

He helped his brothers work on the family farm and raised beef cattle. He was a loving and devoted husband and father and will be missed by his family.

He is survived by his wife, Aethea Fowlston; a son, Garrett James Eiholzer of Columbus; a daughter, Jenna Leigh Eiholzer of Columbus; a brother, Edward T. Eiholzer of Columbus; a brother, Steve Eiholzer of Columbus; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Everett and Carl James, and one sister, Mary Ellen.

There will be visiting hours on Tuesday 6 to 9 p.m. at the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin.

The funeral will be at Saint Andrew's Church in New Berlin on Wednesday, July 17, 2002, at 3 p.m. with the Rev. Bruce MacDuffie officiating.

Burial will be in Saint Andrew's Cemetery, New Berlin.

Donations may be made to the Edmeston Emergency Squad, Cancer Association, Heart Association, or to Saint Andrew's Church, New Berlin.

Funeral arrangements are by Dakin Funeral Home, 17 North Main St., New Berlin.
