Percy G. Melius

MORRIS — Percy George Melius, 89, of Morris, and formerly of East Aurora, died Saturday, July 13, 2002, at the Gilmore Health Care Facility in Norwich, where he had been a resident since 1999.

He was born in Stormville, the son of Henry Fillo and Anna (Davis) Melius.

He had lived with his nephew and niece, Ralph and Charlotte Melius of Morris before his residency at the Gilmore Health facility.

He is survived by his nephew and niece, Ralph and Charlotte Melius of Morris, and several other nephews and nieces of the Hulse family.

Percy was predeceased by two half-brothers, Herbert and William Barret, his brothers, Henry and Clarence Melius, and his sisters, Florence Stevenson and Maude Hulse.

There will be no calling hours. He was cremated at the Hillington Crematory in Morris.

A memorial service will be held at a later date and interment of his cremains will be in Poughquag.

In lieu of flowers, friends are asked to make donations to the Morris Emergency Squad in Percy's memory.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Grace E. Zuercher

ONEONTA — Grace E. Zuercher, 86, of Oneonta passed away peacefully with her daughters by her side, Monday, July 15, 2002, at The Meadows where she had been a resident since 1999. Before The Meadows, Grace had lived at Robynwood Adult Home, Oneonta.

Grace was born Feb. 22, 1916, in Oneonta, the daughter of Edward and Laura (Fenn) Buerger.

She married Thomas Zuercher on Oct. 19, 1939. Thomas died on Oct. 31, 1975.

Grace spent her entire life in Oneonta, first living on East Street, attending Center Street School, graduating from Oneonta High School in 1935, then spending her adult life on Orchard Street.

She used to love to share memories of Oneonta's "good old days" when fairs were held in the Belmont Circle area, when movies were first shown in Oneonta, watching her father make cigars at the cigar factory, and making Decoration Day treks to the Glenwood Cemetery with her mother as they carried the flowers, water and their lunches.

Grace enjoyed flower gardening and ceramics. She held ceramic classes for many years in her home. She was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Atonement, Oneonta.

Grace is survived by a daughter, Laura K. Zummo, of Oneonta; a daughter and son-in-law, Carol and James Roe of Milford; a stepson, Donald Zuercher of Newport, R.I.; two grandsons, Wayne Hymers Jr., and his wife, Lisa, of East Meredith; Jason Zummo and his fiance, Amber Archer, of Binghamton; a step-granddaughter, Pamela (Roe) Kinney and her husband, Warren, of Atlanta, Ga.; four great-granddaughters, Lyndsay, Bailee and Kacie Hymers of East Meredith and Mikayla Zummo of Binghamton; and two step-great-grandchildren, Spencer and Montgomery Kinney of Atlanta.

Even in Grace's last days, her great-granddaughters would bring a smile to her face and a sparkle to her eyes.

She was predeceased by her brother and sister-in-law, Harry and Marvine (Hess) Buerger.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 19, at 11 a.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta.

Burial will follow at the Glenwood Cemetery, Oneonta.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday from 10 a.m. until service time.

It has been requested that, in lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to either the International Rhett Syndrome Association, in the name of Lyndsay, 9121 Piscataway Road, Suite 2-B, Clinton, MD 20735 or to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820 or to The Meadows, 140 County Highway 33W, Cooperstown, NY 13326, in loving memory of Grace E. Zuercher.

Funeral arrangements are being made by Bookhout Funeral Home.

Mildred Renwick

ONEONTA — Mildred Keator Renwick, 89, of Oneonta passed away Monday evening, July 15, 2002, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Nursing Home.

She was born Dec. 9, 1912, in South  Jefferson, the daughter of Raymond L. and Richardaenia (Hill) Keator.

She married Walter T. Renwick on July 15, 1934. He predeceased her on Aug. 17, 1982.

Eleanor moved to Oneonta when she was about 5 years old and attended Oneonta schools. She worked at the Mica Plant during World War II and as a licensed practical nurse at the former Parshall Hospital. She and her husband owned and operated Walt Renwick and Sons Fuel Co. until her retirement in 1981.

Eleanor was a member of the First Baptist Church for 80 years. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 259 of Oneonta where she was a secretary for five years. She was a past member of the Rebekahs and the Oneonta Business Women's Club.

She is survived by her two sons and their spouses, Walter R. and Barbara Renwick of Maryland, Edward T. Sr. and Betty Renwick of West Davenport; one daughter, Francine Renwick of Oneonta; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her daughter Elizabeth Renwick in 1939. She was predeceased by two grandsons, Russell and Larry Renwick. She was also predeceased by her sister, Madeline Wood and a brother-in-law, Clyde Lee Wood.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 18, at 1 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, 71 Chestnut St., Oneonta, with the Rev. William Lang, pastor, officiating.

Burial will follow in the Hartwick Seminary Cemetery, Hartwick Seminary.

Friends may call Wednesday evening at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta from 7 to 9 p.m., at which time the family will be in attendance.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820 in loving memory of Mildred Keator Renwick.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Richard M. Huff

FLY CREEK — Richard Matthew Huff, 34, of Fly Creek, and formerly of Smithtown, Long Island, died early Tuesday morning, July 16, 2002, at his home.

Richie was born on Sept. 26, 1967, at St. John's Hospital in Smithtown, Long Island, a son of John Peter and Justine Catherine (Raspovich) Huff. He married Lauren Ann  Johnson on Aug. 6, 1995, in Selden, Long Island.

Raised and educated on Long Island, Richie was a graduate of Smithtown West High School. For 12 years he was employed by Verizon, both on Long Island and, following his and his family's move to Fly Creek three years ago, in the Herkimer area.

He actively enjoyed many sports throughout his life, including fishing and boating, and had many interests. His greatest love, though, was his family, most especially his wife and two daughters.

Richie is survived by his wife, Lauren, of Fly Creek; his two daughters, Nicole and Alyssa at home in Fly Creek; his parents, Justine and John Huff of Smithtown; his mother and father-in-law, William and Carol  Johnson of Selden; his siblings Arthur, Kevin, Patricia, Francis, Maureen, Jack, and Elizabeth and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., on Saturday, July 20, at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Hartwick Seminary with the Rev. Paul R. Messner, pastor, officiating. The committal service and burial will follow in the Fly Creek Valley Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home, 82 Chestnut St., Cooperstown, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, July 19, when Richie's family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to the Evangelical Lutheran Church, 4636 State Highway 23, Hartwick Seminary, N.Y. 13326 or St. Patrick Catholic Church, 280 East Main St., Smithtown, N.Y. 11787, or the Louis Busch Hager Cancer Center, Bassett Healthcare, One Atwell Rd., Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Fannie C. Bettiol

OTEGO — Fannie C. Bettiol, 94, died Monday, July 15, 2002, at the A.O. Fox Nursing Home, Oneonta.

She was born Nov. 26, 1907, in Davenport, N.Y., the daughter of Willis L. and Ada M. (Green) Callahan. Fannie graduated from Davenport School and then Oneonta State Normal School. She taught school at DeLanson and at South Kortright.

She married Anthony P. Bettiol on Sept. 12, 1931, in Unadilla. Mr. Bettiol predeceased her on Oct. 2, 1993.

A lifelong area resident of Morris and Otego, Fannie also worked at Bendix in Sidney as a gauge inspector until her retirement. She was a member of the Otego United Methodist Church for 29 years. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her three sons and daughters-in-law, Eugene and Elizabeth Bettiol of Oneonta, Arthur and Annaliese Bettiol of Vero Beach, Fla., and Walter and Violet Bettiol of Otego; 10 grandchildren, Eugene, Michael, Daniel, David, Walter, Ronald Bettiol, Janet Laytham, Jaci Michelitsch, Christina Lee, and Karen Galvin; 22 great-grandchildren; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Fannie was predeceased by five sisters, Elizabeth Lent, Ruth Barkley, Edith Bradley, Lena Callahan and Mary Wood and four brothers, Ernest, Louis, Walter and Earl Callahan.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 18, at 10 a.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 34 River St., Otego, the Rev. Fred Albrecht, pastor of the Otego United Methodist Church, officiating.

Burial will follow at the Hillington Cemetery, Morris.

The family will be present at the funeral home on Wednesday, July 17, from 6 to 8 p.m. for those who wish to call.

It has been requested that, in lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to either the Otego United Methodist Church, Church St., Otego, NY 13825 or to the Otego Emergency Squad, River St., Otego, NY 13825 in loving memory of Fannie C. Bettiol.

The family thanks the staff at the A.O. Fox Nursing Home for their care and compassion.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Otego.

Harris F. Yerdon

CHERRY VALLEY — Harris F. Yerdon, 84, passed away Monday, July 15, 2002, at St. Peter's Hospital, Albany, with family members at his side.

He was born Nov. 28, 1917, in Cooperstown, the son of Floyd S. and Myrtle J. (Putnam) Yerdon.

On Jan. 27, 1952, he married Margaret Dubben (then of Middlefield) at the First Presbyterian Church, Cherry Valley. She survives.

Mr. Yerdon attended the Stanley School on county Route 33. Following school, he worked on the family farm. He was employed by Cherry Valley Rendering Works for many years, and the New York State Department of Transportation in Richfield Springs for 27 years, retiring in 1991.

Harris was very important to his family, and family was very important to him. Harris enjoyed the simple life of living in a small town. He enjoyed gardening, hunting at his camp, maple syrup season, and working with his horses. He loved going to the Cade Farm on Chestnut Street.

He was a member and past trustee of the First Presbyterian Church, Cherry Valley, an active member for 59 years of the Cherry Valley Volunteer Fire Department, a more than 50-year member of the Cherry Valley Fish and Game Club, member of the former 100F Lodge 102, Cherry Valley, Civil Service Employee's Association, Chapel Camp Hunting Club, and the Eastern Draft Horse Association.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Margaret Yerdon of Cherry Valley; a daughter Janet and her husband, Keith McCarty, of East Springfield; a son Rodney and his wife, Donna Yerdon, of Cooperstown; two grandchildren, Molli and Ryan McCarty of East Springfield; a sister-in-law, Flossie Yerdon of Cooperstown; a special brother-in-law, Raymond Madison, of Cherry Valley; sisters-in-law and their husbands, Mabel and Ted Graham of Bellevue, Wash., Florence and Sawyer Kinch of Delhi, Flora and Ray Polulech of Hartwick; a cousin, John Whiteman, of Cooperstown; many nieces and nephews, and his three horses June, Josh and Jeannie.

He was the last survivor of seven children, being predeceased by two brothers, Ceylon H. Yerdon and George A. Yerdon, and four sisters, Mrs. Irene Y. Daniels, Mrs. Wava K. Snyder, Mrs. Helen E. Delaney and Mrs. Edna M. Madison.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 19, at the First Presbyterian Church, Cherry Valley, with Pastor Ron Fralick officiating, assisted by Pastor Lyman Johnson.

Burial will follow in the Cherry Valley Cemetery, Cherry Valley.

Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, July 19, at the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley, with a fireman's service at 8 p.m.

Contributions in Harris Yerdon's memory may be made to the Cherry Valley Fire Department or the Cherry Valley Presbyterian Church.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Daniel F. Walsh

HERKIMER — Daniel Ford Walsh, 18, born Nov. 8, 1983, passed away unexpectedly Monday, July 15, 2002.

Daniel was a part-time student, he had his commercial driver's license, and he loved working on cars, the outdoors and racing. He loved life itself and everyone in his life.

Daniel leaves his loving parents, Michael and Dawn Walsh, two brothers, Michael Jr. and Andrew, all of Herkimer; grandparent Donald Walsh of Richfield Springs; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

The funeral will be Friday, July 19, at 2 p.m. at the Wilcox-Dimbleby Funeral Home, West Winfield.

Calling hours are Thursday, from 6 to 8 p.m. and Friday from noon until funeral time.

Interment will be in Lakeview Cemetery, Richfield Springs.

Very special thanks to Dave and Cindy and Lisa who touched his life in a very special way.

Eleanor I. Brownell

ONEONTA — Eleanor I. Brownell, 84, of Oneonta, passed away Tuesday, July 16, 2002, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Nursing Home.

She was born June 28, 1918, in Cherry Valley, the daughter of Herbert L. and Fannie (Melhuish) Wheeler.

She married Jack Brownell on Sept. 15, 1946, in the First Methodist Parsonage in Oneonta.

She worked as an X-ray technician at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital for 34 years, retiring in 1980. During this time she also helped train many technicians.

Eleanor was a member of Elm Park United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. She was also a member of the Martha Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, serving as a past matron. She was a member of the Disabled American Veteran's Auxiliary Chapter 200 of Oneonta.

Eleanor was also an avid bowler on the bowling leagues of Market and Broad Street.

She is survived by her husband, Jack of Oneonta; her two daughters and their spouses, Barbara Ann and Bill Parker of Ithaca; Beth Allison and Richard Fritz of Salisbury, N.C.; her grandchildren, Lisa Parker of Ithaca, Jacqueline Parker Brown of Ithaca and Jennifer Fritz of Salisbury, N.C.; also three additional grandchildren, Melissa Sue Parker of Lebanon, Pa.; Nicole Lynn Kolher of Gastonia, N.C.; five great-grandchildren, Curtis Bryant of Lebanon, Pa., Jurgen Kolher III of Gastonia, N.C.; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 19, at 2 p.m. at Elm Park United Methodist Church, 401 Chestnut St., Oneonta with the Rev. Eileen Cornwell, pastor, officiating.

Burial will follow in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery.

Friends may call Thursday at the Bookhout Funeral Home at 357 Main St., Oneonta from 7 to 9 p.m. at which time the family will be in attendance.

Ruth E. Clapp

SHERBURNE — Ruth E. Clapp, 80, of Sherburne, formerly of the Town of Columbus, died Monday, July 15, 2002, in Sherburne.

She was born March 9, 1922, in Norwich, to Linn and Emma (Bush) Osborne.

She spent her childhood in Norwich and Preston and attended the local school in Preston.

She married Erwin Clapp on Sept. 1, 1938, who died July 31, 1985.

She worked at the TACO factory and Chase Memorial Nursing Home in New Berlin.

She was a member of the Columbus Community Church in the town of Columbus.

She is survived by two sons, Robert Clapp of Columbus and Donald Clapp of Mount Upton; three daughters, Mrs. Edward (Peggy) Warren of New Berlin, Mrs. Thomas (Sheila) Frink of New Berlin, Mrs. Malcolm (Nancy) MacDuff of Norwich; many grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Three sisters, Betty Ann Miller and Helen Osborne of Norwich, Emma Reese of Preston; two brothers, Bob Osborne of Norwich and Donald Osborne of Otego; and many nieces and nephews, also survive.

She was predeceased by a son, Erwin (Pete) Clapp.

Private funeral services will be held at the family's convenience with the Rev. Stephen Reese.

Interment will be in Columbus Corner Cemetery in the town of Columbus.

There will be no calling hours.

Memorial donations may be made to Chenango County Area Hospice.

Dorothy M. Buzzy

ONEONTA — Dorothy M. Buzzy, 80, of Oneonta, passed away Sunday, July 14, 2002, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital.

She was born Feb. 28, 1922, in Cheshire, Conn., the daughter of John and Susan (Beech) Sheldon.

She married Adolph P. Buzzy on Oct. 4, 1941, in Bainbridge.

Dorothy was a member of St. James' Church, Oneonta, and the Oneonta Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star.

She is survived by her husband, Adolph P. Buzzy, of Oneonta; her sons, Jerry and Neal Buzzy of Florida; a daughter and son-in-law, Dawn and Ted Tranvaag of Bainbridge; a sister, Marjorie Eggler of Oneonta; her grandchildren, Duane Buzzy of Oneonta, Stacey Paden of Sidney, Shannon Baxter and her husband, Bill of Otego, Lincoln Tranvaag of Sidney, Selena Palmatier and her husband, Michael, of Sidney, Sabrina Drown and her husband, Keith, of Afton, Sonja Rusweiler and her husband, Adam, of Bainbridge, Brett Buzzy and his wife, Heidi, of Oneonta, and Stephanie Buzzy of Florida.

She is also survived by her great-grandchildren, Ashley Buzzy of Oneonta, Leigha Paden of Sidney, Sheena Bogert, Lucas Johnson, Damion Baxter of Otego, Kelsie Tranvaag of Sidney, Tyler, Trevor, Tanner and Troy Palmatier of Sidney, Makenzie Drown of Afton, Savannah and Cassidy Rusweiler of Bainbridge, Mickaela Buzzy of Oneonta; along with five sisters-in-law, one brother-in-law; and several nieces and nephews.

At the request of Dorothy and her family, there will be no funeral service. A private family remembrance gathering was held.

Arrangements were by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.
