Mildred Renwick

ONEONTA — Mildred Keator Renwick, 89, of Oneonta passed away Monday evening, July 15, 2002, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Nursing Home.

She was born Dec. 9, 1912, in South  Jefferson, the daughter of Raymond L. and Richardaenia (Hill) Keator.

She married Walter T. Renwick on July 15, 1934. He predeceased her on Aug. 17, 1982.

Mildred moved to Oneonta when she was about 5 years old and attended Oneonta schools.

She worked at the Mica Plant during World War II and also as a licensed practical nurse at the former Parshall Hospital.

She and her husband owned and operated Walt Renwick and Sons Fuel Co. until her retirement in 1981.

Mildred was a member of the First Baptist Church for 80 years. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 259 of Oneonta where she was a secretary for five years. She was a past member of the Rebekahs and the Oneonta Business Women's Club.

She is survived by her two sons and their spouses, Walter R. and Barbara Renwick of Maryland and Edward T. Sr. and Betty Renwick of West Davenport; one daughter, Francine Renwick of Oneonta; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two stepgreat-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her daughter, Elizabeth Renwick in 1939; two grandsons Russell and Larry Renwick; her sister, Madeline Wood; and a brother-in-law, Clyde Lee Wood.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, July 18, 2002, in the First Baptist Church, 71 Chestnut St., Oneonta, with the Rev. William Lang, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in the Hartwick Seminary Cemetery, Hartwick Seminary.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday evening at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, at which time the family will be in attendance.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820 in loving memory of Mildred Keator Renwick.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Robert W. Eklund

DOWNSVILLE — Robert W. Eklund, 77, of Downsville, formerly of Stamford, passed away Tuesday, July 16, 2002, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

He was born in Blenheim on Jan. 27, 1925, the son of Algot and Axia (Jokobson) Eklund.

He has been a resident of this community the past three years; previously he spent most of his lifetime in the Stamford area.

He was married three times: His first marriage was to Pauline Howard. She predeceased him in May 1966; his second marriage was to Beatrice Fuller. She predeceased him in January 1998; his third marriage was to Thelma Vernold on Oct. 28, 1999. She survives him.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Stamford and served on the Board of Education, Charlotte Valley Central School.

He is survived by his wife, Thelma Eklund, of Downsville; three sons, Thomas and wife, Deborah, Eklund of Maryland; John and wife, Melissa, Eklund of McLean, Va., and Robert Eklund Jr. and fiancee, Charlene Henderson, of Stamford; one daughter, Betty Janye and husband, Richard, Spinney of Stamford; four stepsons Daniel Accordino and wife, Cindy, of Cazenovia, Lawrence Accordino and wife, Jean, of LaFayette, Richard Accordino and wife, Jill, of Oneonta, and Vaughn Vernold and wife, Nancy, of Hudson Falls; one brother, Einar Eklund, Stamford; one sister, Vi Scranton, Schoharie; 16 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, July 18, 2002, at the Knorr Funeral Home, Downsville, when the family will be in attendance.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, July 19, 2002, at the Colchester Community Church, Downsville, with the Rev. Maybelle Renzi officiating.

Interment will be in Stamford Cemetery, Stamford.

Contributions may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice, 20 Elm St., Delhi.

Gladys A. Rosher

SCHENEVUS — There will be a memorial service held for Gladys A. Rosher — who passed away on April 25, 2002 — at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 19, 2002, at the First Baptist Church, corner of Monitor and Division streets, Schenevus, with the Rev. Robert Thompson officiating.

In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Gladys A. Rosher Memorial Fund will be appreciated.

Lewis L. Smith

SCHENEVUS — The committal service for Lewis L. Smith will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, July 21, 2002, at the Maryland Cemetery, with the Rev. William Robert Thompson, pastor, officiating.

Military honors will be presented by the Schenevus VFW Post 2752.

Arrangements are by the Heller Funeral Home, 25 Arch St., Schenevus.

William Robinson

WESTVILLE — William Everett Barney Robinson, 86, of Westville, died Wednesday evening, July 17, 2002, at his home.

He was born on Sept. 27, 1915, in Fort Plain, a son of John Edward and Magadelina (Moore) Barney.

He married Jean E. Francis on Sept. 21, 1940, in the Worcester Methodist Church.

Bill spent his early childhood in the Fort Plain area, and, following his mother's and father's deaths in 1918 and 1922 respectively, became a foster son of George M. and Nettie (Garlock) Robinson who lived in Westville. He attended the Westville Rural School and graduated from Milford Central School in 1933.

In 1936, he graduated from Oneonta Normal School as a licensed grammar school teacher with a permanent license and taught first in the Canajoharie District 14 Rural School for four years and then in the Portlandville Elementary School for four years.

During World War II, he served his country with the U.S. Army Infantry Signal Corps with the occupation forces in the European Theatre of Operations in Germany.

Following the war, Bill taught in the Cherry Valley Central School from 1946 until 1958, when he and his family moved to Johnstown. There he taught in the Pleasant Avenue Elementary School and later he taught science at Knox Junior High School, before retiring in 1972.

Upon his retirement, he and his wife moved back to part of the original Robinson Family Homestead.

Bill was a member of the Westville United Methodist Church where he had at one time served as Sunday school superintendent; the New York State Teachers' Association; and a lifelong member of the PTA. For many years he also sold and serviced TVs and installed antennas.

He enjoyed his computer and compiled extensive records and genealogies on the Barney, Moore, Robinson, Luther and Francis families.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Jean, of Westville; two daughters and sons-in-law, Sybil J. Osterhoudt and her husband, Jeffrey, of Westville and Nancy L. Hauck and her husband, Dennis, of Wilmington, Del.; one son and daughter-in-law, Douglas W. Robinson and his wife, JoAnna, of Johnstown; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one brother and sister-in-law, Harold A. Barney and his wife, Cora, of West Oneonta; one brother-in-law, Hugh L. Francis and his wife, Donna, of Cooperstown; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his brother, Lawrence Barney.

A funeral service will be held at noon on Sunday, July 21, 2002, at the Westville United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Rose Bellen, pastor, and the Rev. Bill Wilson of Michigan co-officiating.

A service of committal and burial will follow in the Westville Cemetery.

Bill's family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until service time on Sunday morning in the Sunday School Room at the church.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13326.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Evelyn Sopagee

BAINBRIDGE — Evelyn Sopagee, 92, of Bainbridge, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, July 17, 2002, at The Hospital in Sidney.

She was born June 27, 1910, daughter of William and Emily Dixon Warhurst, who immigrated from Staleybridge, England.

Evelyn attended New Bedford High School in New Bedford.

She married Joseph Peter Sopagee on June 16, 1934, at "The little church around the corner" in Brooklyn. He predeceased her in April of 1967.

Evelyn was a receptionist for the Central Services of the United Presbyterian Church in the United States at the Interchurch Center in New York City when she retired in 1975. She was an elder, trustee and deacon in the Presbyterian Church as well an active member with the Presbyterian Women. Mrs. Sopagee was active in service and membership in the First Presbyterian Church in Bainbridge.

She was kind and thoughtful, seeking to do good to others. Her cheery notes, cards and telephone calls gave joy to many. She loved to sing, participating as long as she could in church choirs and community musical productions. Her faith was firm to the end.

Evelyn is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Joseph Renton; six grandchildren, Debra Hampton, Mark and Deborah Hampton, Dorothy and Richard Boulton, James and Victoria Hampton, Janet and David Couture, Joseph and Stephanie Munson; five great-grandchildren, Sean Walder, Matthew Boulton, Charles Boulton, Zachary Munson and Matthew Munson; and nephew, Jon Warhurst.

She is also predeceased by her son, Peter Dixon Sopagee; daughter, Arlene Mae Munson; and brother, Vernon Warhurst.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, July 21, 2002, at the First Presbyterian Church in Bainbridge. Funeral services will follow at 4 p.m. with the Rev. Katherine Evans officiating. Burial will be in Kensico Cemetery in Valhalla on Monday.

Memorial contributions may be made in Evelyn's name to the memorial fund of the First Presbyterian Church in Bainbridge.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers Inc. Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Thomas Jorgensen

NEW BERLIN — Thomas Mace Jorgensen Sr. passed away on July 17, 2002, in the town of New Berlin.

He was born Jan. 19, 1958, in Oneonta, the son of Marius M. and Lena Nichols Jorgensen.

He married Joann McCarthy Jorgensen on Feb. 9, 1980, in Goshen, Ind. She survives him.

He spent his childhood in the town of Maryland and Crumhorn Mountain.

He attended Andrew S. Draper School in Schenevus.

He is survived by five sons and one daughter, Thomas Jr., Richard, Todd, Ryan, Tara and Robert, all at home; his brother and sisters, Robert M. Jorgensen Sr. of Maryland, Gwen Laing of Bristol, Ind., Mrs. Edward (Nancy) Doty of Edwarsburg, Mich., Mrs. Conrad (Carol) Boglioli of Maryland and Mrs. Charles (Sue) Mann of Mount Vision.

He was self-employed as a farmer and logger for Jorgensen Lumber Co.

There will be no calling hours; and the funeral will be held at the convenience of the family.

Anyone who knew Tom knew he was a good person who will be greatly missed by his wife, children, mother, siblings and extended family.

Tom loved to hunt and fish and was a renaissance man. He spent most of his adult life in Indiana, moving home six years ago to be near his aging parents.

We love you Tom, rest in peace.

Donald A. Hartwell

STAMFORD — Donald A. Hartwell, 83, of Spring Hill, Fla., and formerly of Shew Hollow Road, Stamford, died Jan. 23, 2002, at Oak Hill Hospital, Spring Hill, Fla.

He was born Feb. 20, 1918, on Shew Hollow Road, the son of Melvin and Grace (Cornell) Hartwell.

He married Isabel (Mattice) Hartwell on Oct. 12, 1940. He was predeceased in death by his wife of 58 years, Isabel.

Donald was employed by his uncle, Fred Cornell, and worked on his dairy farm for many years. Later he worked for the Schoharie County Highway Department until his retirement in November 1980.

He moved to Spring Hill, Fla., in 1997.

He is survived by a son, Donald A. Hartwell Jr., of Hinesville, Ga.; a daughter, Nancy G. Haas, of Spring Hill, Fla.; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one brother, Clarence C. Hartwell of Shew Hollow Road; and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, July 20, 2002, at the Hartwell family plot at Evergreen Cemetery in  Jefferson, with the Rev. Waylen Bray, pastor of the Stamford Baptist Church, officiating.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Hall Funeral Home, Stamford, under the direction of William A. Tari.

Nancy Hoag

MARYLAND — Nancy Zenobia Hoag, 59, of Maryland, formerly of New Hartford, went to be with our Lord on Thursday, July 18, 2002, at home with her family by her side.

Born in Nyack, on March 27, 1943, she was the daughter of Ernest and the late Lillian (Syfried) Zenobia and stepmother Yvonne.

Nancy graduated from Northern Valley Regional High School and went on to receive her registered nursing degree from Ann May School of Nursing in Neptune, N.J. Nancy worked many years in emergency room and trauma areas and in cardiac care. She was instrumental in setting up the Intensive Care Unit and Cardiac Care Units at Englewood Hospital in New Jersey. Most recently, she worked in the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital emergency room for 15 years.

She received her bachelor's degree in 1997 from Hartwick College in Oneonta and pursued a master's degree as a nurse practitioner at Binghamton University until diagnosed with cancer.

Nancy sadly and lovingly leaves her husband of 36 years of marriage, Edmund A. Hoag; three sons, two daughters-in-law and four grandchildren: Ernest, his wife, Robin and their three daughters, Kylie, Emily and Savannah of South Hill, Va., Matthew, his wife Susan and their son, Kaleb of Worcester, and Mark, who lives at home; her father, Ernest and stepmother, Yvonne; a brother, Kent Zenobia and his wife, Ellen; two sisters-in-law, Cathy Nieffer and Janet Parr, as well as their significant others, and many nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. on Monday, July 22, at the Heller Funeral Home, Schenevus.

The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, July 23, at the Milford Center Community Bible Church on Route 28, with the Rev. Stephen D. Fournier, pastor, officiating. Following the service, a fellowship luncheon will be served at the church.

Burial will be at the Katsbaan Cemetery in Saugerties at the convenience of the family.

Nancy was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer called Leiomyosarcoma (LMS) in 1998 and started making awareness ribbons in April 2001. Due to the generosity of donations towards the ribbon fund, she and her husband started a non-profit foundation called the National Leiomyosarcoma Foundation, to support research for care or cure.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the LMS Foundation for research at 129 Hawkins Rd., Maryland, NY 12116.

Funeral arrangements are by the Heller Funeral Home, 25 Arch St., Schenevus.

Samuel W. Lape Sr.

SUMMIT — Samuel Ward Lape Sr. of Summit died Thursday, July 18, 2002, at his home, surrounded by his family.

He was born in Lutheranville in the town of Summit, on Sept. 16, 1922, the son of Samuel J. and Phoebe Edith (Ward) Lape.

He was a graduate of Richmondville Central School, member of the Richmondville Future Farmers of America and valedictorian of the Class of 1940.

He married Margaret Theresa Kearney on June 24, 1945, at St. Gregory the Great Roman Catholic Church, New York City.

He worked as a farmer on the family farm in Lutheranville, town of Summit, and retired after 20 years of employment at the State University College of Agriculture and Technology at Cobleskill.

He was a member of the Board of Fire Commissioners of the Charlotteville Fire District, chairman of the Summit Board of Assessors, past master of Summit Grange 1536, member of the Schoharie County Historical Society, member of the Richmondville Central School Alumni Association, member of the Summit Methodist Church and for the last 40 years a member of St. Anna's Roman Catholic Church, Summit.

He enjoyed traveling, reading and being with his family.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret T. Lape of Summit; five sons, S. Ward Lape Jr. of New York City; William R. and Teresa M. Lape of Sauquoit, Jeffrey J. and Susan J. Lape of Cicero, Richard T. and Ann M. Lape of Richmondville, Timothy R. and Lynn M. Lape of Warnerville; a daughter, Elizabeth E. and Howard W. Burt, Jr. of Cobleskill; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Calling hours will be held on Sunday, July 21, from 6 to 9 p.m., at Robert Guffin Funeral Home, Chapel Street, Cobleskill.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Monday, July 22, at 11 a.m., at St. Anna's Roman Catholic Church, Summit.

Burial will be at Summit Rural Cemetery, Summit.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Anna's Roman Catholic Church, Summit.

Marian A. Garrison

SCHENEVUS — Marian A. Garrison, 85, passed away Friday, July 19, 2002, at The Meadows in Middlefield.

She was born May 31, 1917, in Mill City, Pa., the daughter of Alvah and Margaret (Durland) Garey, and was the sixth child out of seven.

She was first married to James Edward of Wilkes Barre, Pa., then to Austin Belles, who predeceased her in 1984, and last to Thomas Garrison, who predeceased her in 1988.

Mrs. Garrison was formerly from Binghamton, where she was a foster care mother for many years, caring for more than 50 infants for the Family and Children's Society.

She moved to Schenevus in 1988 and was very active in the First Baptist Church in Schenevus.

She is survived by two daughters, Selina and her husband, the Rev. William Robert Thompson of Schenevus, Clara and her husband, Wayne Gunning of Hawaii; a son, Bill and his wife, Gail Belles of Appalachian; stepson, Austin Belles Jr., of Whitney Point; a brother, Henry Garey of Tunkhannock, Pa.; a sister, Rose Caswell of Hallstead, Pa.; many grandchildren; several great grandchildren, cousins, nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her siblings, Allen and his wife, Alice Belles, Woodrow Garey, Wilson Garey and Gertrude Baker, a brother-in-law, Delos Caswell and stepchildren, Ann Sexton and Thomas Garrison Jr.

There will be no calling hours.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 23, at Maple Grove Cemetery in Pikes Creek, Pa., with the Rev. William Robert Thompson, pastor of the First Baptist Church, officiating.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in loving memory of Mrs. Garrison, to the First Baptist Church, Monitor Street, Schenevus.

Arrangements are by Heller Funeral Home, 25 Arch St., Schenevus.
