Lois S. Rogers

HARPURSVILLE — Lois S. (Stone) Rogers, 88, of Harpursville died at 4:15 p.m. Saturday, July 17, 2002, at the Countryside Care Center in Delhi, where she was residing.

She was predeceased by her husband, Raymond Rogers, and two sons, Raymond Rogers, Jr. and John Rogers.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Marilyn R. and Rev. Paul Meisel of Delhi; two sons and daughters-in-law, Theron and Elaine Rogers of Gainesville, Ga. and Clarence (Corky) and Jean Rogers of Harpursville; two daughters-in-law, Sylvia Rogers of Rochester and Dawn Rogers of St. Charles, Ill.; 13 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; a sister and brother-in-law, Frances and Wilbur Riley of Newark Valley; a brother and sister-in-law, Carl and Beverly Stone of Binghamton; two sisters-in-law, Marian Rogers of  Johnson City and Doris Stone of Afton; and several nieces and nephews.

Lois was a member of the Harpursville Baptist Church since 1927, and its pianist and treasurer for many years.

Funeral services will be at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Harpursville Baptist Church. The Rev. Michael Rowe, pastor, will officiate.

Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery in Harpursville.

The family will receive friends at the Osterhourdt-Madden Funeral Home, 69-71 Maple St. in Harpursville, from 7 to 9 p.m. today and from 10:30 to 11 a.m. Tuesday prior to the service at Harpursville Baptist Church.

Memorial contributions in memory of Lois may be made to the Harpursville Baptist Church, 41 Cumber Road, Harpursville, N.Y. 13787 or Countryside Care Center, Route 10, Delhi, NY 13753.

Patricia A. Eldred

OAK HARBOR, Ohio — Patricia Ann (Nichols) Eldred, 61, of Oak Harbor, Ohio, died Sunday, July 28, 2002, at H.B. Magruder Hospital in Port Clinton.

She was born in the bank parking lot at Bainbridge (which at the time of her birth, on May 1, 1941, was the site of a hospital).

Patricia lived in Arco Felice, Italy, and the states of New York, Maryland and Virginia before settling in Ohio in 1976.

Patricia played several musical instruments and enjoyed her home, family, travel, the challenge of complex sewing projects and delving into genealogical research.

She was preceded in death by her father, George H. Nichols, in 1945 and her mother, Mary Ellen (Hall) Nichols, in 1972.

She is survived by her husband, David T. Eldred, who she married on Nov. 26, 1958 in Oneonta; sons, David A. Eldred of Oak Harbor, Ohio, Jason I. Eldred of Land O' Lakes, Fla., and Eric J. Eldred, major U.S.M.C., of Camp LeJune, N.C.; daughter, Andrika S. Hinkle of Fremont, Ohio; two daughters-in-law; six grandchildren; sister, Virginia (Mrs. Paul) Tilley of Seffner, Fla.; and brother, Seymour H. Nichols of Unadilla.

There will be no services. Burial will be at a later date with her husband in Arlington National Cemetery, or at an alternate site selected at the discretion of family members.

The family suggests memorial contributions to the Ottawa County Humane Society or the donor's choice.

Arrangements are being handled by the Robinson-Henn-Brossia Funeral Home, Oak Harbor, Ohio.

Leo V. Carmody

SIDNEY — Leo V. Carmody, 64, of Sidney passed away peacefully Saturday evening, July 27, 2002, at The Hospital in Sidney.

He was born Dec. 25, 1937, in Honesdale, Pa. Leo was the son of Vincent and Leona Rowland Carmody. His father predeceased him on March 3, 2000.

He is survived by his mother, Leona Carmody, of Sidney; two daughters, Donna Hansen and Kathy Oswald of Afton; two sons, Daniel P. Carmody of Beachhaven, N.J., and Michael F. Carmody of Arnold, Md.; his brother, James F. Carmody of Port Salerno, Fla.; eight grandchildren, Brigitte Hansen, Bernt Hansen, Devon Costello, Stefanie Oswald, Melissa Oswald, Cameron Oswald, Jacob Costello and Natalie Costello.

For several years he was an auto reconditioner for the former Fendick Chrysler-Plymouth dealership in Sidney. Leo served his country in the U.S. Air Force from 1955 to 1958.

At Leo's request, services will be private in Honesdale, Pa. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery in Honesdale.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be directed to the Delaware Valley Humane Society, East Main St., Sidney, N.Y. 13838.

Arrangements are under the direction of the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St. in Sidney.

Rose A. McEwan

OXFORD — Rose A. McEwan, 59, of Oxford and formerly of Sidney passed away unexpectedly Saturday evening, July 27, 2002, at the Chenango Memorial Hospital in Norwich.

She was born June 14, 1943, in Sidney, the daughter of the late Dale and Lela Meyers Anderson.

On Nov. 9, 1973, she married Dale F. McEwan in Deposit.

Rose was a retired employee of the Amphenol Corp. in Sidney.

Rose was predeceased by her sister, Terry Hard.

She is survived by her husband, Dale F. McEwan, of Oxford; three daughters, Shannon Santos of Middletown, Stacey and Thomas Tuttle of Afton and Delsa McEwan and Fred  Johnson of Syracuse; three sons, Daniel and Brenda McEwan of Guilford, Brandon McEwan and Tracey Kurt of Sidney, and Jephrey McEwan of Norwich; four sisters, Gail and James Burke of Cooperstown, Jinx and Richard Williams of Sherburne, Rox Ann Charles and Mark Scofield of Sidney, and Kela and Dan Charles of Masonville; 10 grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 30, 2002, from the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St. in Sidney, with the Rev. Fr. Gordon Polenz, pastor of the Sacred Heart Church in Sidney, officiating. Burial will follow in the Prospect Hill Cemetery in Sidney.

Friends are invited to call from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral chapel. Memorial gifts in her name may be directed to the Oxford Emergency Squad, Oxford, NY 13830.

Betsy Wheeler

ONEONTA —Betsy Denise Wheeler, 46, of Oneonta passed away with her loving family by her side after a courageous battle with cancer Saturday, July 27, 2002, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

She was born March 2, 1956, in Norwich, the daughter of Ronald and AnnaMae (Rifanburg) Jacobs.

Betsy was a waitress at the Cracker Barrel in Gastonia, N.C.

She is survived by her husband, Mark Wheeler of Grover, N.C.; her mother, AnnaMae Jacobs of Utica; two stepchildren, Joel Rose of New Jersey and Joshua Rose of Florida and their father, Gerald Rose; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Nancy and Robert Allen of Oneonta, Pamela Benhoff of Utica and Deby and Donald Fuller of New Berlin; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Bruce and Mary Jacobs of Utica and Barry and Tina Jacobs of South New Berlin; several nieces and nephews; and very special friends, the employees at Cracker Barrel in Gastonia, N.C., in which the family extends a special thank you for all of their help and support to Betsy during her illness.

Betsy was predeceased by her father, Ronald Jacobs, in 1999 and her brother, Samuel Jacobs, in 1966.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, July 31, at 1 p.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Kip Stratton, pastor of the Unadilla and Sidney Center United Methodist Church, officiating.

Burial will follow at the Oneonta Plains Cemetery.

The family will be present at the funeral home on Tuesday, July 30, 2002, from 7 to 9 p.m. for those who wish to call.

It has been requested that in lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the American Cancer Society, 31 Adams Ave., Endicott, NY 13760, in loving memory of Betsy Denise Wheeler.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Alfonso Monaco

ONEONTA — Alfonso Monaco, 88, of Oneonta, passed away on Saturday July 27, 2002, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

He was born Nov. 30, 1913, in the Bronx, the son of Frank and Catherine (Romano) Monaco. He married Maria A. Papia on Nov. 26, 1939, in New York City.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the United States Navy. After his discharge, he joined the Civil Air Patrol.

For many years, Mr. Monaco worked as a welder in the metal fabrication business in the metropolitan New York City area.

Up until two weeks ago, Mr. Monaco and his wife resided in Brooklyn, where they maintained residence in a senior citizen housing complex. He was very involved in their activities, which included committees and other volunteer projects.

Mr. Monaco had varied interests, but was most fond of drawing, painting, playing the piano, singing, automobiles and coin collecting. Most of all, he enjoyed the special times spent with his family.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Maria A. Monaco of Oneonta; his son and daughter-in-law, Frank and Maria Monaco of Oneonta; four grandchildren, Annmarie Forbis of Raleigh, N.C., Michael Bivona Jr. of Oneonta, Frank A. and his wife, Elizabeth, Monaco of South New Berlin, and Marisa T. Monaco of Oneonta; two great-grandchildren, Edward S. and Gianna M. Forbis; two sisters, Mary Capasso of Florida, and Jose Feller of Long Island, along with several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Maria Bivona, and a grandchild, Rosemarie Bivona.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered on Wednesday, July 31, at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, Oneonta, with the Rev. Paul Roman, pastor, officiating.

Burial will follow in Oneonta Plains Cemetery.

Friends may call on Wednesday at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta, from 8 a.m. until service time at St. Mary's.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Iris C. Elderkin

WALTON — Iris C. Elderkin, a lifelong Walton resident, died Monday, July 29, 2002, at her home. She was 93.

She was born Aug. 30, 1908, in Walton to Andrew and Blanche VanAkin Constable.

She married Herbert D. Elderkin in Walton on April 30, 1927. He predeceased her in 1992.

She was an assembler at Bendix in Sidney.

Iris C. Elderkin is survived by a son, John C. Elderkin, of Walton; daughters, Pauline Clair of Bainbridge, and Phyllis Howe of Walton; a sister, Blanche Michael of Florida; sisters-in-law Flora Constable and Margaret Constable; 27 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Besides her husband, she is predeceased by daughters Barbara Shields and Jacqueline Baird and her husband, David; and also by six brothers and six sisters.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Lyon Bros.-Way Inc. Funeral Home, corner of North and Delaware Streets, Walton, where friends may call Saturday from 9 to 11 a.m.

A memorial service will immediately follow at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Paul Cronin officiating.

Burial will be in Walton Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations to Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care or The American Cancer Society would be appreciated.

Hugh Douglas

WEST BABYLON — Hugh Douglas, born Jan. 20, 1911, in the Bronx, passed away on Saturday, July 27, 2002.

A loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, he retired from the Beechnut Lifesaver Co. and moved to Andes. He lived for many years in Andes, where he was a librarian and caretaker of the Andes Library. Before moving to Levittown to live with his daughter, he resided in Delhi.

He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Delhi. His wife was the late Elizabeth Andrews Douglas.

He is survived by two daughters, Susan Dysko of Levittown and Janet Cosauage of Eliott, Maine; and his grandchildren, Nancy Costanza, Amy Rudolph, Carrie Sturgis and Peter Duffy. Also surviving are six great-grandchildren, Frank, Nicolette and Gianna Constanza, Christian Rudolph, and Alexandra and Curtis Sturgis.

A graveside service will be held at the Andes Cemetery on Wednesday, July 31, at 1:30 p.m. for family and friends.

Glenn Hyney

COOPERSTOWN — Glenn Hyney, 89, of Cooperstown, died Friday, July 26, 2002, at The Meadows.

He was born Oct. 22, 1912, in Franklin, the son of Ward J. and Anna May (Reynolds) Hyney.

Glenn lived in Oneonta since 1923. He worked as a farmer for many years in the local area.

He was predeceased by a brother, Norman L. Hyney. He died in 1983.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Aug. 1, at 11 a.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta with the Rev. Mel Farmer, pastor of the River Street Baptist Church, officiating.

Burial will follow at the Oneonta Plains Cemetery.

There will be no calling hours.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

John H. McDade

ONEONTA — Memorial services for John H. McDade, who died Jan. 25, 2002, in Inverness, Fla., will be held at the American Legion building on Chestnut Street, Oneonta, on Sunday, Aug. 11, at 1 p.m.

Dean R. Moore

ONEONTA — Dean R. Moore, 64, of 119 RJM Lane, Oneonta, passed away Tuesday, July 30, 2002, at his residence after being in ill health for the last several months.

He was born Feb. 10, 1938, in Salisbury, the son of the late Arnold G. and Leona (Nicholas) Moore Sr.

He was a graduate of the Stratford Central High School Class of 1955.

He was united in marriage to the former Joan M. Rockwell on March 26, 1960, at the Salisbury United Methodist Church Parsonage.

He is of Methodist faith. He was a member of the Salisbury Ridge Runners Club and the Oneonta Moose Club. He was an avid hunter and fisherman who enjoyed his yearly hunting trips to Colorado to hunt elk.

Moore was a self-employed logger beginning his career in Salisbury in 1955. He later moved to Oneonta where he continued to operate his business until his retirement in October 2001.

He is survived by his wife, Joan; his son, Michael Moore and Trina of Franklin, N.Y.; his two daughters, Jodie Kluge of Salisbury and Lori Moore of Oneonta; two brothers Arnold G. Moore Jr. and his wife, Betty, of Salisbury and Grant L. Moore and his wife, Palma, of Little Falls; two sisters Harlene Cramer and Robert Darling of Salisbury and JoAnn Moore and John Cotter of Salisbury; eight grandchildren, April Avery, Kelsey and Tyler Kluge, Heidi Silvernail, Judson and Lindsay Youker, Shelbi and Cassidy Moore; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his son, Deane R. Moore Jr., who died March 25, 1992, and by a brother Larry Moore and three sisters Janet Moore, Jennifer Moore and Brenda Carpenter.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Aug. 1, 2002, at 11 a.m. from the Chapman-Moser Funeral Home Inc., 42 N. Ann St., Little Falls, with the Rev. Robert Jeffers, pastor of Salisbury United Methodist Church, officiating.

Interment will take place in Salisbury Rural Cemetery, town of Salisbury.

Relatives and friends are invited to pay their respects at the funeral home on Thursday, Aug. 1, from 10 to 11 a.m. and to attend the funeral services to follow.

It is the wish of the family that contributions in memory of Mr. Moore be considered to Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820. Envelopes are also available at the funeral home for this purpose.

Ralph C. Petersen

GARRATTSVILLE — Ralph C. Petersen, 89, of Garrattsville, N.Y., and Stockton,  Calif., died Monday, July 29, 2002, at Chase Nursing Home in New Berlin, N.Y., where he had been a resident since May 1997.

He was born in Boston on Aug. 31, 1912, the son of Aksel Nicholas Petersen and Magda Carolina Wilhelmina (Sorensen) Petersen.

He is survived by his younger brother, Russell Petersen of Garrattsville; his niece Karin Catania and her husband, Philip, of Garrattsville; his nephew Eric Petersen and his wife, Diane, of Colonie. Grandnephews include Dr. Lucien Catania and his wife, Kathleen, Dr. Adrien Catania, Knut Catania, Jenee and Bret Petersen.

He was predeceased by an older sister, Bertha Hyatt, and a younger brother, Ross.

He served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II in the European Theater of Operations.

After his professional life as an optician he retired to Garrattsville to live with his niece Karin for 15 years.

Ralph was a solitary man, but he touched many lives in ways in which even he was not aware.

Memorial services will be held Friday, Aug. 2, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Dr. Donald Boardman officiating at Chase Memorial Nursing Home in New Berlin.

Keeping with Ralph's wishes, he was cremated at the Hillington Crematory in Morris.

There will be no calling hours.

Arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Paul Valachovic Jr.

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Paul Valachovic Jr., 46, of 6 Gould Ave., passed away Friday morning, July 26, 2002, in the Rosewood Terrace Adult Care Facility, Richfield Springs, after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born on Jan. 23, 1956, in Schenectady, son of the late Paul and Irene Valachovic. Paul was raised and educated in Schenectady. At one time he was employed by Drakes Cakes in Schenectady.

On June 11, 1994, he married the former Linda M. Muzio in Schenectady. He has resided in Richfield Springs since 1999, coming here from Binghamton.

Paul had a strong belief in God and lived a devoted Catholic life. He was a parishioner of St. Joseph's Church in Richfield Springs.

He will be greatly missed by many, especially his extended family made up of the residents and staff at Rosewood Terrace.

His wife, Linda, survives him.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Rosewood Terrace Adult Care Facility. Sister Patricia Woolheater, community director of St. Joseph's Church Richfield Springs, will officiate.

Funeral arrangements are with J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, Richfield Springs.
