He was a cable splicing technician with Verizon in Syracuse for 34 years. He was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War.Survivors: His wife of 34 years, the former Kathy R. Kubarek; a daughter, Kristine Hemmel of St. Pete Beach, Fla.; a son, James R. II of Lee, Mass.; three sisters, Charlotte Riordan, Nancy Renahan and Linda Tanchak, all of Auburn; a brother, William E. of Auburn; a granddaughter. Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday in Lakeview Cemetery, Fleming. Calling hours, 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at Ryan Funeral Home, 44 E. Main St., Marcellus. Mae V. Browning

Mae Voorhees Browning, 97, of Loretto Cunningham Residence, Syracuse, died Thursday. Born in Baldwinsville, she attended Keuka College. She was manager of the Bonanza Hotel in Liverpool. She was a member of Order of the Eastern Star and the Elks Lodge. Her husband, Wesley Sr., died in 1986; a son, Wesley Jr., died in 1989.Survivors: A daughter, Jeanne Salisbury of Liverpool; three sisters, Katherine Fay of Phoenix, Ariz., Laura Wolf of Zephyrhills, Fla., and Barbara Kelly of Cicero; two brothers, Fred Voorhees of San Juan Capistrano,  Calif., and Robert Voorhees of Weedsport; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren. Services: 10 a.m. Wednesday at Maurer Funeral Home. Burial,  White Chapel Memory Gardens. Calling hours, 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, 300 Second St., Liverpool. James K. Childs Sr.

James K. Childs Sr., 73, of 13392 Craine Road, Sterling, died Friday. He was born in New York City. He owned Childs Milk Co., Boonton, N.J. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War. A son, Larry, died in 1988.Survivors: His wife of 51 years, the former Rita Bensley; two daughters, Carole Childs of Atascadero,  Calif., and Cindy McNie of Marshalls Creek, Pa.; two sons, James K. Jr. of Hopatcong, N.J., and Frank L. of Parsippany, N.J.; a brother, Albert K. of Lubbock,  Texas; two grandchildren. Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday at Becker Funeral Home. Burial, private. Helen L. Crill, 83, of Middle Road, Munnsville, died Friday. Born in Floyd, she graduated from Holland Patent High School. She retired in 1980 after 20 years as an attendant at Rome Developmental Center. She was of the Protestant faith.Survivors: Two brothers, George of Verona and Gordon of Ormond Beach, Fla. Carleton W. Dickinson

Carleton W. Dickinson, 90, of Schaffer Avenue, Syracuse, died Friday at Iroquois Nursing home. Born in King Ferry, he lived most of his life in the Syracuse area. He retired in 1976 after 35 years as a pump house operator at Allied Chemical. He was a former member of Moose Lodge 644, Baldwinsville. His wife of 66 years, Thelma B., died in March.Survivors: A daughter, Joyce Dickinson of North Syracuse; two sons, Gary D. of Houston and Bruce A. of Syracuse; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren. Services: 9:15 a.m. Wednesday at Falardeau Funeral Home and 10 a.m. in Most Holy Rosary Church. Burial,  White Chapel Memory Gardens. Calling hours, 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, 93 Downer St., Baldwinsville.

Rose Stout Elm, 95, of 194 Leonard St., Syracuse, died Saturday at St. Camillus Health & Rehabilitation Center. Born on the Onondaga Nation, she lived most of her life in Syracuse. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Fay, died in 1945.Survivors: Two daughters, Mona Saltasia of Cato and Sherie Cummings of Syracuse; 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren. Walter E. Ernst
September 1, 2002
Walter Eugene Ernst, 87, of Knightdale, N.C., died Friday. Born in Solingen, Germany, he lived many years in Manlius before moving to Florida in 1976 and to Knightdale in 1994. He was founder and senior partner of Ernst and Cooper Insurance in Manlius. He was former trustee of the Manlius Village Board and served as police and fire commissioner. He was past commander of the Archie Van Patten American Legion Post 141 and the Lions Club, both in Manlius. He was an Army veteran of World War II.Survivors: His wife of 31 years, the former Juanita Shorkey; a son, Walter E. Jr. of Israel; a stepson, James Butterfield of Marblehead, Mass.; four stepdaughters, Julie R. Simpson and Donna L. Mudge, both of Santa Barbara,  Calif., Lonnie M. Chu of Liverpool and Linda L. Bockover of Zebulon, N.C.; eight grandchildren; a great-grandchild. Services: Wednesday in Knightdale. Burial, at a later date in Manlius Village Cemetery. L. Marlene "Kay" Fresch Godden, 58, of 2516 county Route 7, Oswego, died Thursday. Born in Oswego, she attended Hannibal schools. She was a homemaker. She was past president of the American Foreign Exchange Students and a Cub Scout den mother. She was founder of the quilt group and former treasurer of the First United Methodist Church, Oswego. She was a host for the Fresh Air Kids program.Survivors: Her husband, James C.; a daughter, Jeanine K. Godden of Oswego; three sons, Richard and Robert Godden, both of Oswego, and Samuel Godden Graham of Germany; a sister, Susan Magazu of Orange Park, Fla.; two brothers, Harry Fresch of Fulton and David Fresch of Oswego; seven grandchildren. Services: 10 a.m. Tuesday in the First United Methodist Church, Oswego. Burial, Hannibal Cemetery. No calling hours. Nelson Funeral Home, Oswego, has arrangements. Raymond K. Grenier

Raymond K. Grenier, 51, of Pittsburg,  Calif., died Monday. He was born in Syracuse, and lived in the Syracuse area before moving to California in 1972. He graduated in 1969 from North Syracuse High School, where he was president of his fraternity. He was an electrician 15 years with Paradiso Mechnical and previously was an assembly worker at Carrier Corp.Survivors: His wife of 14 years, the former Theresa Freyer; a daughter, Brittany Grenier of California; a stepdaughter, Tammy Hernandez of Oakland,  Calif.; a stepson, Brian Hernandez of Concord,  Calif.; his mother, Barbara Baldwin of Albany; two brothers, Bruce of Pittsburg,  Calif., and James of Albany. Services: Were in Concord,  Calif. Burial, 1 p.m. Tuesday in St. Alphonsus Cemetery, Tupper Lake. Calling hours, 3 to 6 p.m. Monday at Fergerson Funeral Home, 215 S. Main St., North Syracuse. William F. Haag Sr.

William F. Haag Sr., 65, of Liverpool died Friday. Born in Syracuse, he graduated from Vocational High School. He was a salesman at J.R. Decker Auto Sales and various auto dealerships in the Syracuse area. He was a life member of Syracuse Turners and Pastime Athletic Club. He was a Navy veteran.Survivors: His wife of 42 years, the former Ellen Donah; two sons, William F. Jr. and Richard F., both of Syracuse; a sister, Barbara R. Raymond Horstmyer, 96, of 100 Flume Road, Manlius, died Thursday. He was born in Niskayuna. He retired in 1960 after 30 years as a corrections officer at Dannemora Correctional Facility. He was a member of the Masons, the Shriners and the Elks Club. He was an Army Air Forces veteran of World War II. His wife, Evelyn, died June 9.Survivors: A son, Robert of Cazenovia; four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren. Services: 4 p.m. Wednesday in the First Presbyterian Church of Cazenovia, 27 Albany St., Cazenovia. Burial, private. A reception will be held after services in the church meeting room. He was an Air Force veteran of the Korean War.Survivors: His wife of 39 years, the former Mary Courtney; two daughters, Mardy Jacquemin of Bristol, Conn., and Tina Howe of Syracuse; four sons, Darrin and Brian, both of Syracuse, John of Fayetteville, N.C., and Harold Jr. of Solvay; a sister, Betty DeGelorma of Fulton; two brothers, Edward of Cicero and Robert of Sandy Creek; 13 grandchildren.
