Richard J. Buecheler, 84, of Marcellus died Friday. Born in Syracuse, he graduated from Syracuse University and its law school. He retired in 1983 after 40 years as a lawyer with Hiscock & Barclay in Syracuse. He was a member of the Onondaga County Bar Association, the board of directors of Woodlawn Cemetery and St. Michael's Lutheran Church. He was a former member of the board of directors of the Liederkranz Club.Survivors: His wife of 57 years, the former Shirley J. Watson; five daughters, Karen Hanford, Gail Gosson and Gretchen Taylor, all of Marcellus, Linda Bonnell of Mountain Ranch,  Calif., and Susan Luchsinger of Onondaga Hill; two sons, Richard G. of San Juan Capistrano,  Calif., and William J. of Onondaga Hill; two brothers, John E. of San Jose,  Calif., and Raymond W. of Bradenton, Fla.; 17 grandchildren; a great-grandson. Alfred J. Downs

Alfred J. Downs, 83, of Lynnhaven Drive, North Syracuse, died Saturday. Born in Delaplaine, Ark., he lived in Baldwinsville until four years ago. He retired in 1981 after 33 years as a crane operator for Allied Chemical in Solvay. He was a member of the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. He was an Army veteran of World War II and a member of Tipperary Hill American Legion Post 1361. His wife, Frances, died in 1992.Survivors: His companion, Nancy J. Burdick of North Syracuse; two sisters, Hattie Popish of Morrison,  Colo., and Greta Mitchell of Meridian, Idaho. Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday at Gates Funeral Home. James A. Holts

James A. Holts, 71, of 175 Forest Ave., Syracuse, died Thursday at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center. He was born in Philadelphia, Pa., where he attended high school. He retired after 25 years as a mechanic for the Philadelphia school district. He was a 32nd-degree Mason. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War and a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8432 and Holmesburg Lodge 137, both in Philadelphia.Survivors: His wife, Shirley; three daughters, Karen Myers-McCray, Deborah Holts and Ruth Mitchell, all of Syracuse; a son, Calvin Mitchell of Syracuse; a sister, Betty Osborne of Philadelphia; three brothers, William and Charles, both of Philadelphia, and John of Roanoke, Va.; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren. Cornelius A. "Neil" Lane Jr., 62, of Fayetteville died Sunday. Born in Flushing, he graduated from Fayetteville High School. He was president of Battery Power Systems in East Syracuse for 17 years. He was a member of the Fayetteville Lions Club, the Central New York Street Rod Club and the Mohican Car Club and a communicant of Immaculate Conception Church. He was a Navy veteran.Survivors: His wife of 39 years, Nancy; two sons, Jeffrey E. of Fayetteville and William J. of Suwanee, Ga.; a sister, Ellen Eagan of Buffalo; two grandchildren. Mary Ann Skoczen Nieciecki, 83, of Panama City, Fla., formerly of Syracuse, died Friday. Born in Syracuse, she graduated from Frazer School. She retired in 1983 as a unit secretary at Crouse Irving Memorial Hospital. She was a communicant of the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and a member of its Altar and Rosary Society, the Sacred Heart Mother's Club and the Associates of Vietnam Veterans of America in Panama City. Her husband, Stanley, died in 1970. A daughter, Estelle Libby, died in 1991.Survivors: A daughter, Camille Napolitano of Syracuse; a son, Peter of Panama City; a sister, Betty Skoczen Nieciecki of Syracuse; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren. She was employed with the county attorney's office, and worked in the office of the late state Supreme Court Justice Edward Crawford and for the Chamber of Commerce. She was a member, past regent and past district deputy of the Catholic Daughters of America. She was a co-founder of the local Alzheimer's Association and a member of its council.
