Howard Allen Graham
HUDSON FALLS - Howard Allen Graham died Thursday, May 14, 2009, at the Fort Hudson Health Center in Fort Edward following a short illness. He was 68.

Born May 24, 1940, in Glens Falls, N.Y., he was the second son of Howard D. and Sarah (Rathbun) Graham.

He attended Queensbury and Hudson Falls Schools and was a graduate of Queensbury High School.

Raymond C. Needham
WARRENSBURG - Raymond C. Needham, 81, of Baker's Crossing, passed away Friday, May 15, 2009, at his home with his loving wife by his side.

Born Oct. 31, 1927, at home in Warrensburg, he was the son of the late Earl and Lucy (Butler) Needham.

Raymond gained his education from Warrensburg Central School.

Norma Bombard Smith
QUEENSBURY - Norma Bombard Smith, 82, passed away quietly at her home in Queensbury on Friday, May 22, 2009, after a courageous battle with diabetes-related illnesses.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Carleton Funeral Home Inc., 68 Main St., Hudson Falls.

Cassie F. Duket
CLARKS MILLS - Cassie F. Duket, 72, a resident of Clarks Mills Road, passed away Thursday, May 21, 2009, at the Glens Falls Hospital after a long illness.

Born Dec. 23, 1936, in Fort Edward, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Sherry and Emmaline (Colvin) Gifford.

Cassie was a communicant of Notre Dame-Visitation Church in Schuylerville, and a member and past Grand Regent of Court Stella Maris CDA.

Roland E. Sleurs
EAST GREENWICH - Roland E. Sleurs, 64, of East Greenwich, passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, May 19, 2009, at his residence.

Funeral arrangements are pending and will be announced by the McClellan Funeral Service, 19 E. Broadway, Salem, in a future edition of The Post-Star.

Herbert William Johnson
BRANT LAKE - Herbert William Johnson, 80, died unexpectedly Thursday, May 21, 2009, at Fletcher Allen Hospital in Burlington, Vt.

Born Nov. 6, 1928, in Staten Island, he was the son of the late Bror Albert and Anna (Nelson) Johnson.

Mr.  Johnson was a self-employed brick layer from Massapequa, N.Y., and owned  Johnson and Son. He retired as a teacher with BOCES of Nassau County, teaching the bricklayer trade.

Elizabeth Dickinson
GLENS FALLS - Elizabeth Dickinson, 84, a former resident of Glens Falls, passed away on Saturday, May 30, 2009, at Fort Hudson Nursing Home, Fort Edward.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, June 3, 2009, at the Regan & Denny Funeral Home, 53 Quaker Road, Queensbury, N.Y.

Burial will follow at the Gerald B.H. Solomon National Cemetery, Schuylerville, N.Y.

Sgt. Richard A. Dempster Jr.
QUEENSBURY and ANSBACH, GERMANY - Sgt. Richard A. Dempster Jr., 26, passed away on Monday, May 25, 2009, Memorial Day, while stationed in Ansbach, Germany.

Born Aug. 17, 1982, in Glens Falls, he was the beloved son of Richard and Diana (Lockhart) Dempster Sr. of Queensbury.

Following his graduation from Queensbury High School, Class of 2001, Richard enlisted in the United States Army as a 94 Delta. He served his country proudly in the United States starting in Fort Benning and Fort Gordon, Ga., then on to Fort Drum, N.Y., a tour of duty in Afghanistan, then in Iraq, and most recently serving in Germany. There he progressed to ATC maintenance chief.

Josephine Margaret Cypher D Angelico
FORT EDWARD - Josephine Margaret Cypher D'Angelico, age 94, of 39 Burgoyne Ave., Fort Edward, died Saturday, May 30, 2009, at the Glens Falls Hospital from complications of a massive heart attack suffered in January.

"Jo," as she preferred to be called, was born in Greenwich, N.Y. on Dec. 12, 1914, the only child of Joseph and Anna Duffy Cypher. She was the granddaughter of Michael Duffy who immigrated from Ireland to America in 1866, and Pernell Brownell Duffy of Greenwich. Jo was proud of her Irish-Quaker roots being a great-great-great-great-granddaughter of Elijah Brownell, a Quaker born in Dartmouth, Mass., in 1736. He served as a corporal in the Berkshire Militia during the Revolution. Bringing his family to Easton, and settling at the foot of Willard Mountain, he built a log cabin east of the Quaker Meeting House. In 1788, he built a large home, which still stands on Meeting House Road. Many of Jo's Quaker forebearers served our country in its formative years and are buried in the Quaker Cemetery nearby. Jo spoke proudly of another relative, suffragette Susan Brownell Anthony.

Jo's father died when she was 12 years old and she and her mother lived with her Duffy grandparents, whom she dearly loved. She excelled in school and was also an avid tennis player and ice skater. A graduate of Greenwich High School, she went on to State Teachers' College in Albany, majoring in English and Latin. In later years, while still raising a family, she returned to University at Albany getting her bachelor's degree in English education and teaching English at Fort Edward High School. Jo often commented that her second career choice was "to be a detective."

Joan Whiting
HERNANDO, Fla. - Joan Whiting, 76, of Hernando, Fla., died on May 23, 2009, at her home.

Joan was born on June 18, 1932, in Glens Falls, N.Y., the daughter of John and Irma Comeskey.

She graduated from Colby Sawyer College in New London, N.H. in 1952.

Eleanor M. Havens
HUDSON FALLS - Eleanor M. Havens, 90, of LaBarge Street, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 6, 2009, at the Glens Falls Hospital.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Carleton Funeral Home Inc., 68 Main St., Hudson Falls.

Dorothy Vance Jenison
GANSEVOORT - Dorothy Vance Jenison, 93, a resident of Jewel Road, an angel of God, died Saturday, June 6, 2009, at the Saratoga Hospital.

Born April 23, 1916, in Mosherville, she was the daughter of Earl and Carrie (Potter) Mundell.

Dorothy was a homemaker who loved taking care of her family, and enjoyed canning and cooking.

Tresca Winefred Strout
CAMBRIDGE - Tresca Winefred Strout, 96, died peacefully on Thursday, June 4, 2009, at the Wesley Health Care Center in Saratoga Springs.

She was the widow of Linwood Strout, who died in 1971.

Born Sunday, Feb. 16, 1913, in Shushan, she was the daughter of Douglas Mark and Irene (Smith) Madison.

Alan Baxter Bell
CAMBRIDGE - Alan Baxter Bell, 64, died at his home on Bell Lane, of natural causes.

Calling hours are planned for Monday, June 8, 2009, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Ackley & Ross Funeral Home, 73 West Main St., Cambridge, N.Y.

A funeral service is being planned for Tuesday morning at the funeral home.

Elizabeth Jane Hunt Betty Henkel
QUEENSBURY - Elizabeth Jane Hunt (Betty) Henkel, 81, of the Terrace at The Glen, passed away Tuesday, June 16, 2009, after a long illness.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, June 23, 2009, at the Singleton-Healy Funeral Home, 407 Bay Road, Queensbury, N.Y., with Rev. Flossie Gage Bates officiating. Burial will follow at the Pine View Cemetery.

Michael Dziamb
LONG LAKE - Michael Dziamba, 40, of Newcomb Road, passed away unexpectedly on June 17, 2009, at Glens Falls Hospital surrounded by his loved ones.

Born on Nov. 1, 1968, in Troy, he was the son of the late Peter and Vera (Rocker) Dziamba.

He attended the Lansingburgh School District, and went on to enlist in the U.S. Army, where he served his country for two years before his honorable discharge.

Fr. Francis Frank J. Browne
ESOPUS, N.Y. - Father Francis "Frank" J. Browne, C.Ss.R., 66, pastor of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in New Smyrna Beach, Fla., joined the Lord in eternal life Thursday, June 18, 2009.

Born in Kingston, N.Y. on July 17, 1942, Fr. Frank was the son of the late Edward and Anne (Gelshenen) Browne.

He professed his vows on Aug. 2, 1962, and was ordained a Redemptorist Priest on June 23, 1968, at Mt. St. Alphonsus Seminary in Esopus, N.Y.

Lucille Orcutt Hall
SOUTH GLENS FALLS - Lucille Orcutt Hall, 90, passed away June 19, 2009, at her home with her loving family at her side.

Lucille was born in South Glens Falls, the daughter of the late Hollis E. Orcutt and Mary A. (Sweet) Orcutt.

She graduated from South Glens Falls High School in 1937.

Polly McGuir
 Jackson - Polly McGuire, of Jackson, passed away Friday afternoon, June 19, 2009, at her residence.

Arrangements are pending with McClellan Funeral Services, Salem, N.Y.

Frank J. Hadeka Sr.
GRANVILLE, N.Y. - Frank J. Hadeka Sr., age 91, passed away at his home on Wednesday, June 24, 2009.

Frank was born on Oct. 9, 1917, in Proctor, Vt., the son of Adolph and Mary (Pikelivicz) Hadeka.

Frank was a veteran of World War II.

Willard J. 'Billy' Williams
HARTFORD, N.Y. - Willard J. "Billy" Williams, age 63, of Hartford, N.Y., passed away on Tuesday, June 23, 2009, at the Indian River Health Care Center in Granville, N.Y., after a period of declining health.

Billy was born in Glens Falls, N.Y., on Nov. 5, 1945, son of the late Willard and Natalie (Shanon) Williams.

He served his country honorably in the United States Navy.

Eleanor G. Didio
SOUTH GLENS FALLS - Eleanor G. Didio, 78, formerly of South Glens Falls and recently of The Landing of Queensbury, went into the arms of the Lord on Thursday, June 25, 2009.

Arrangements are under the direction of Singleton-Healy Funeral Home, 407 Bay Road, Queensbury.

Michael Thomas 'Tom' Carroll
CHESTERTOWN - Michael Thomas "Tom" Carroll, 86, died Wednesday, June 24, 2009, at Glens Falls Hospital.

Born Sept. 5, 1922, in Ballybaun, Askeaton, County Limerick, Ireland, he was the son of the late Michael Joseph and Bridget (Kennedy) Carroll.

Tom immigrated to the United States in 1949, arriving in New York on St. Patrick's Day March 17. He worked at the Circle Inn in Latham for his cousin, Thomas J. Dunn for five years. From there, he went to work at the Morris Inn on the University of Notre Dame campus for five years. On July 1957, he bought the Panther Mountain House in Chestertown and had operated that business and lived there ever since.
