Eric Selch, the son of the Rev. Grant Melville Selch and Jean Harper Selch, was born on March 24, 1930, in South Royalton, Vt., and grew up in West Winfield, N.Y.

He was a graduate of Hamilton College and Syracuse University, where he received a master of science degree in radio-television production and broadcasting business.

In May 2002, he successfully defended his doctoral dissertation, "Instrumental Accompaniments for Yankee Hymn Tunes: 1760-1840," in The American Studies Program at New York University, which is to be awarded posthumously.

Mr. Selch served in the United States Army Signal Corps from 1953 to 1955.

He began his advertising career as a producer at J. Walter Thompson Co. in 1955, in London, England, where he contributed to the establishment of the first commercial television production studio in the British Isles.

In 1960, he returned to New York and worked for J. Walter Thompson as a broadcast supervisor and media specialist from 1960 to 1974, and for Keystone Broadcasting System as vice president of sales from 1975 to 1981.

In 1982, Mr. Selch produced the Broadway musical, "Play Me A Country Song." From 1983 to 1989, he was owner, publisher and editor of Ovation, a magazine devoted to the world of classical music and opera.

While Mr. Selch spent his business career in advertising and media, he is best known as one of the preeminent authorities on American musical instruments and musical culture and his prolific collection of musical instruments, manuscripts, books and works of art relating to American musical culture.

The Selch Collection is one of the largest private collections of historic American musical materials in the United States, covering all phases of American musical life from early 17th-century to the present with a focus on 18th- and 19th-century New England instrument makers and composers.

Mr. Selch was the founder and artistic director of the Federal Music Society. Formed for the bicentennial in 1976, this professional performance group specialized in the music of early Federal America and played on authentic period instruments.

Between 1976 and 1985, the Federal Music Society performed more than 70 concerts, several of which were recorded for New World Records. In addition, Mr. Selch was a founder of the American Musical Instrument Society, a scholarly association of performers, museum curators, collectors and researchers interested in the history of musical instruments and publisher of JAMIS.

Since 1992, while completing graduate work at New York University in the American Studies Program, he served as an independent developer and promoter of musical events, including the development of a series of American Music Festivals at Illinois Wesleyan University and planning for a Center for the Study of American Music History in New York.

He also restored the historic 1802 Beekman Mansion to its original splendor with period furniture and paintings in Sharon Springs, N.Y.

Sharing his knowledge and love of the history of American musical instruments with others, Mr. Selch presented lectures before the American Musicological Society, the American Musical Instrument Society, the Galpin Society, the American Society of Eighteenth Century Studies, the International Violin Society and the Associates of the Smithsonian.

In addition, he has contributed articles to The Grove Dictionary of American Music and The Grove Dictionary of Musical Instruments among other publications.

He taught the history of musical instruments at New York University Graduate School of Arts and Sciences in the 1970s.

Mr. Selch was an elder and Sunday school teacher for 27 years at Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church and a member of the Grolier Club, where he had served as Chairman of Exhibitions, acting as a curator of exhibitions of musical instruments and related art and books.

He was also a board member of the Orpheus Society, New World Records and the Independent School Orchestras. Each year, Mr. Selch led a caroling group around the neighborhood in a manner reminiscent of the Victorian era.

Mr. Selch is survived by his wife of 49 years, Patricia Bakwin Selch; three sons, Nicholas Frederick Selch of Lancaster, Pa., Jason Bakwin Selch of Chicago, Ill., and Gregory Stephen Selch of New York, N.Y.; one daughter, Andrea Helen Selch, Ph.D. of Hillsborough, N.C.; and eight grandchildren.
