Anton 'Tony' Spitzer
LAKE GEORGE -- Anton "Tony" Spitzer, age 85, a resident of Lake George for many years, passed away peacefully following a brief illness on Wednesday, Oct. 7, 2009 at Glens Falls Hospital.

Tony was born on July 5, 1924, in Elek, Hungary, son of Josef Spitzer and Theresa Zollner. He was an ethnic German, speaking German at home, but was also fluent in Hungarian. He learned the barber trade from his maternal grandfather starting at age 14. He continued working as a barber throughout the war years until three months before the end of the war. At that time, the German Army came through and pressed him and many other German-speaking men into service — with no weapons and no training. They were ordered to dig defensive positions as the Russian Army was approaching fast. The army continued to retreat and he was captured by the advancing Russian Army which then pushed towards Yugoslavia. Then he was turned over to the Yugoslav Partisans and put into a forced labor camp with other German-speaking soldiers and civilians — men, women and children. Food was scarce and if one couldn’t work, they were shot. He escaped three times, but was recaptured by different Partisan groups before finally successfully crossing into the Russian Zone of Austria. He was put to work on a farm in Austria, but in a few weeks he snuck over the border into Germany and was eventually reunited there with his family who had been deported by the Hungarian government, along with 12 million other German-speaking people from Eastern Europe. He worked in Germany as a barber for two years and then went to America as a displaced person.

Tony arrived in New York harbor on Nov. 29, 1949 and soon found a job working in a barbershop in Queens. He married Erna Krisch, on Dec. 7, 1952 in Flushing, Queens, where they resided until 1978. He operated Deepdale Barber Shop in Little Neck, Queens, for 14 years, before the barber trade was hit with a severe slump because of the long hairstyle brought on by the emergence of the Beatles. At that point, he studied to become a real estate salesman, and then a broker. In 1977, Tony and Erna moved to Lake George, which reminded them of Europe, where they operated Lake George Barber Shop and Lake George Realty on Ottawa Street until their retirement in 1986. Tony was then able to fulfill his longtime dream of returning to the place of his birth in 1988 and again in 1992. In 1995 they moved to Ocala, Fla., and remained there for 10 years, where Tony was a devoted caregiver to his beloved wife for a number of years until his health forced them to relocate back here to be near their family. They resided at The Landing of Queensbury for four years.
