Harold Hitchcock
STAMFORD — Harold D. Hitchcock, 77, of 37 Prospect St. in Stamford, passed away at his residence on Friday, Aug. 30, 2002, following a long illness.
He was born Feb. 10, 1925, in Roxbury, the son of Marshall and Blanche (Rogers) Hitchcock.
Harold was employed for 35 years at Greendell Meat Packing Corp. in Prattsville, serving as vice president and accountant. After his retirement he was the accountant for Project Independence in Hobart.
On Oct. 4, 1945, he married Marie Ange Bonenfant from Granville, France.
He served in World War II in a tank division in the European Theatre, landing on Omaha beach, on D-Day 2.
He had a great love for his community and served in various capacities throughout the years.
As an active member of Sacred Heart Church in Stamford, he was an usher, and, following retirement, the caretaker for the Sacred Heart Cemetery.
Harold will be remembered for his participation as a manager in the adult minor league baseball team, as a player/manager for the Greendell Softball team and an umpire for the Little League.
He was a member for more than 35 years in the Stamford Fire Department and Ambulance squad and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, in which he held several leadership positions.
Harold is survived by his devoted wife of 56 years, Marie; his daughter, Evelyne (Frank) Bottorf of Canandaigua; his son, Daniel Hitchcock and Catherine Smith of Lafayette, La.; three grandchildren, Richard Bottorf, and Katie and Sarah Hitchcock; brother, Marshall (Pam) of Bradenton, Fla.; sisters-in-law, Millie Hitchcock of Walton and Jeanne Bonenfant of Stamford.
Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. today, Sept. 3, 2002, at the Hall Funeral Home, 40 Main St., Stamford. Father Anthony Ligato will celebrate a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2002, at the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in Stamford. Internment will follow at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Stamford.
Contributions may be made in Harold's memory to the Stamford Fire Department and Emergency Squad, Main Street, Stamford, NY 12167.

Louis J. Cerra
ONEONTA — Louis J. Cerra, 91, of Oneonta, died Friday, Aug. 30, 2002, at the Gilmour Health Facility in Norwich.
He was born Nov. 19, 1910, in Italy, the son of Pasquale and Francesca (DeFazio) Cerra.
He married Frances Moore on June 22, 1955, in Brattleboro, Vt. She died on Oct. 28, 1999.
Lou immigrated to the United States from Italy in 1914, and soon became an American citizen.
He held various jobs in his younger years, until he became affiliated with the fuel business. He then worked his way up through the company, and eventually became part-owner and president of Oneonta Oil and Fuel. His career in that company lasted for 52 years; he retired in 1983.
He enjoyed reading, wood working and gardening, for which he took great pride, especially in his tomatoes.
He is survived by his children, Lewis J. Cerra and Frances Bryden both of Oneonta, his three stepchildren and their spouses, Patricia and Leon Decker of Otego, Jackie and Gary Scavo of Sidney, and Gloria Brienza and her partner, Victor Calventi, of Washington, D.C.; his 10 grandchildren, Al and Stephen Grant, Mary Lee Grant, Scott and Michele Cerra, Russell Decker, Debra Chipman, David Decker, Stacey Cerrone and Scott Scavo; as well as several great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two brothers and their spouses, Bernard and Minnie Cerra of Worcester and Patrick and Mary Cerra of Oneonta.
He was predeceased by two sisters, Jennie Carline and Rose Pascoe.
A graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2002, in Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Emmons.
Friends may call at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta, after 3 p.m. today. The family will be in attendance from 6 to 8 p.m.

Helen Ann Wirsch
RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Helen Ann Wirsch, 58, of Center Street, passed away on Saturday night, Aug. 31, 2002, in Saint Lukas' Memorial Medical Center in New Hartford.
She was born on Aug. 20, 1944, in Newburgh, daughter of Helen Ann Clegg King and the late Donald King.
Helen was raised in Newburgh and educated in Saint Francis of Assisi School, Sisters of the Resurrection School and graduated from Lady Cliff High School.
On Aug. 20, 1983, she married George F. Wirsch in Saint Patrick's Church in Newburgh. She and her husband moved to the Richfield Springs area in 1990.
Helen had a strong belief in God and led a devoted Catholic life. She was a member of Saint Joseph's Church in Richfield Springs, the Catholic Daughters of America and the Saint Joseph's Rosary Society.
She will be greatly missed by many especially her family.
Surviving are her husband of 19 years, George; two sons and their wives, Todd and Amanda Travis of Richfield Springs, and Clancy and Shannon Travis of Schuyler Lake; one daughter, Robin Travis of Richfield Springs; two brothers and their wives, Michael and Elizabeth King of Greenwood Lake, and Christopher and Elizabeth King of Beacon; six grandchildren, Robin Cronin, Jennifer Travis, Brianna Travis, Autumn Travis, Joshua Travis and Magdalina Travis; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A funeral from J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James St., in Richfield Springs will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 2 p.m. in Saint Joseph's Church, Richfield Springs, with the Rev. Terrance Healey officiating. Mrs. Wirsch will laid to rest in Saint Joseph's Cemetery. The family will be present in the funeral home on Wednesday to receive relatives and friends from 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m.

Daniel Smallin
ONEONTA — Daniel Smallin, 68, of Oneonta, passed away unexpectedly Saturday, Aug. 31, 2002, at his home.
He was born Oct. 21, 1933, in Oneonta, the son of Daniel Sr. and Rosamond (Knapp) Smallin.
He married Janice Terebo on June 3, 1955, in Honesdale, Pa.
He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.
Dan was an avid stock car enthusiast. He enjoyed driving the stock cars and also participated in many events as the flagman in the Morris and Binghamton area.
A self-employed businessman in the Oneonta area for many years, Dan and his wife owned and operated the East End Laundry and the Robo Car Wash.
He is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Janice Smallin, of Oneonta. He is also survived by a brother, Richard Smallin of Oregon; an uncle, Norm Knapp; also, several nieces, nephews and cousins, including a very special nephew, William Walters of Unadilla.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2002, in the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., in Oneonta, with the Rev. Kenneth Brookens, pastor, Living Water Faith Fellowship Church, officiating. Burial will follow in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Bookhout Funeral Home from 5 to 8 p.m. today, at which time the family will be in attendance.

Irene M. Dean
SIDNEY CENTER — Irene M. Dean, 48, of 5630 state Highway 206 in Sidney Center passed away unexpectedly Sunday morning, Sept. 1, 2002, in Manchester, N.H.
She was born May 28, 1954. in College Point, the daughter of the late Edward and Irene McKinnon Swislosky.
Irene married Daniel A. Dean on Aug. 8, 1998, in Masonville.
She was a service representative for Citizens Communication in Sherburne.
She is survived by her husband, Daniel A. Dean of Sidney Center; five daughters and sons-in-law, Amy Dean and Charles Heap of Albany, Irene Becker and Vincent Luca of Lawrenceville, Ga., Donna and Corey Dean of Masonville, Kimberly Becker of Bedford, N.H., and Christina Dean of Masonville; son and daughter-in-law, Ludwig Becker and Kirsten Lanfair of Masonville; two brothers and sister-in-law, Edward Swislosky of Binghamton, and Robert and Clair Swislosky of Sidney; father-in-law, Nick Sank of Sidney. She is also survived by six grandchildren; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 5, 2002, from the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St. in Sidney, with the Rev. J. Alvin Mosher of McGraw officiating. Burial will follow in the Masonville Cemetery in Masonville.
Friends are invited to call after 3 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2002, at the funeral chapel, with her family in attendance from 7 to 9 p.m.

Judy A. Wikoff
DAVENPORT — Judy A. Wikoff, 64, of Davenport, died Monday, Sept. 2, 2002, at home.
She was born Sept. 27, 1937, in Cooperstown, the daughter of Charles and Doris (Weir) Larsen.
She married David Wikoff on April 13, 1968, in Fly Creek.
A graduate of Cooperstown Central School and the State University College at Oneonta, Mrs. Wikoff taught in the elementary grades at Charlotte Valley Central School in Davenport and Perry Brown School in Norwich.
She is survived by her husband, David, of Davenport; two sons, David and Carrie Wikoff of Franklin and Duane and his friend, Melissa Furgeson of Davenport; three grandchildren, Jordan, Tarah and Joseph; her mother, Doris Larsen of Oneonta; and two sisters, Connie McCrea of Middlefield, and Joan and Bill Armstrong of North Carolina.
Funeral services will be private at the convenience of the family with the Rev. Lisa Heckman officiating.
Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2002, at the MacArthur Funeral Home in Davenport. Burial will be in Davenport Cemetery in Davenport.
Contributions in her memory may be made to Catskill Area Hospice.

Linus J. Houck
ONEONTA — Linus J. Houck, 92, of Oneonta passed away Sunday, Sept. 1, 2002, at the A.O. Fox Hospital Nursing Home.
He was born Oct. 16, 1909, in Toddsville, the son of John and Minnie (Bird) Houck.
He married Helen Wenck on Nov. 3, 1938, in Oneonta.
Linus was a graduate of Oneonta High School and Albany Business College. He attended the University of Alabama, and was an alumnus of Hartwick College, for which he wrote their Alma Mater. He also graduated from Ithaca College Conservatory of Music in 1936. He attended Columbia University for his graduate degree, and also the Julliard School of arts.
For a period of 10 years, he taught music at Laurens Central School and South Kortright Central School, and assisted at several other area schools.
From 1945 to 1974, he was a co-owner of Oneonta Music Center with Don Trinkino.
In his retirement years, he worked for the State University College at Oneonta security.
Linus' primary music studies were in saxophone and clarinet, but he played most instruments, which he taught to many area students.
In earlier years, he played with several celebrity bands, including the Dorsey Band. In 1950, Linus formed the Linus Houck Band and played for weddings and dances all over the area, and continued on well after his retirement.
He attended St. James' Episcopal Church, and at one time sang in the choir.
He was secretary-treasurer of the Federation of Musicians Union Local 443 for 46 years. He also was a life member of BPOE 1312.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Helen Houck, of Oneonta; his children and their spouses, Pat and Ken Leslie of Oneonta, Linda Kulp of Mission Viejo, Calif., and Sherri Cerosaletti of Oneonta; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren; his two sisters, Vivian Miller and Ruth Trinkino, both of Oneonta; as well as several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Richard and John Houck.
The Eucharist and Thanksgiving for the life of Linus Houck will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 5, 2002, at St. James' Church, with the Rev. Robert Haskell officiating. Burial will be in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery.
Friends may call on Wednesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home at which time the family will be in attendance.

Denise M. Lowe
KINGS MOUNTAIN, N.C. — Denise M. Lowe, 34, of Kings Mountain, N.C., and formerly of Unadilla, N.Y., died Sunday, Sept. 1, 2002, in Kings Mountain of injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
She was born Dec. 13, 1967, in Sidney, N.Y., the daughter of Herbert and Kathleen (Mondore) McCall.
She married Steven Lowe, who survives, on March 22, 1986, in Unadilla.
While living in North Carolina, Denise worked as a security guard for Burns Security.
Denise was a 1987 graduate of Unatego High School, where she was active in volleyball.
She was a member of the Girl Scouts, and participated in their canoeing program, for which she won many trophies. She was a finalist in one of the events in the General Clinton Canoe Regatta.
Denise was a loving and caring mother.
She is survived by her two sons, Anthony and Steven Lowe, of Kings Mountain, N.C.; her father, Herbert McCall of Franklin; her mother and stepfather, Kathleen and Tom Arnold of Otego, N.Y.; maternal grandmother, Vivian Mondore of Melbourne, Fla.; and paternal grandmother, Eva McCall of Walton, N.Y.
She is also survived by her sisters and brothers, and their spouses, Martha and Jason Hall of Unadilla, Carrie and Rick Hodge of Unadilla, Dale and Dawn McCall of Franklin, N.Y., and Herbert and Regina McCall of Otego, N.Y.; as well as several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 6, 2002, in the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin, with the Rev. Michael Amos, officiating. Burial will be in the Ouleout Valley Cemetery, Franklin.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at which time the family will be in attendance.

Betty Jane Cisotto
GILBERTSVILLE — Betty Jane Cisotto, 68, of Gilbertsville passed away Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2002, at The Hospital in Sidney.
She was born Dec. 17, 1933, daughter of the late George and Pauline Alverson Travis in Walton.
Betty owned and operated Butternut Valley Adult Home in Gilbertsville for several years, she retired in May of 2002.
She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Veda and Robert Neish, Phoenix, and Lorri and Mark Kendrick, Sidney; two sons, Max Steinbacher, Norwich, and Eugene Steinbacher, New Jersey; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Gertrude and Raymond Bullis, Sidney, and Ramona and Ronald Peterson, Unadilla; brother and sister-in-law, Elmer and Joan Travis, Hendersonville, S.C.; seven grandchildren, Tonya, Jessica and Gregg Neish, Rick, Matt, Chelsea Steinbacher and Mark Kendrick; and ex-husband of 32 years, Eugene Steinbacher, Kentucky.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 5, 2002, at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Mary Winnie
MARTINSVILLE, Va. — A graveside committal service for Mary Neal Becker Winnie, 93, who died on March 27, 2002, in Martinsville, Va., will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 7, 2002, in the Lakewood Cemetery in Cooperstown, with the Rev. Douglas M. Deer, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Cooperstown, officiating.
Those attending should enter the cemetery through the main gate (located by the caretakers' house) and turn left. The grave is located in the section near the main road and across from the entrance for Fairy Springs.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.
Jennifer Loveland
OTEGO — Jennifer Lynne Loveland, 35, of Otego, died Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2002, at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, after a lingering illness.
She was born Dec. 20, 1966, in Oneonta, the daughter of Bill and Norma (Carr) Slawson.
She attended the Oneonta schools and the State University College at Geneseo.
On July 1, 1989, she married Dale Loveland at the St. James' Episcopal Church in Oneonta, and they made their home in Otego.
Jennifer was a homemaker and enjoyed making handcrafted items that were often given to her friends. She also enjoyed her time as a volunteer for the Otego Central School, helping on many projects and field trips.
Jennifer is survived by her husband, Dale Loveland; daughter, Britney Loveland of Otego; her parents, Bill and Norma Slawson of Oneonta; two brothers, Jeffrey Slawson of Orchard Park, and Michael and his wife, Jessica, Slawson of East Greenbush; and many other relatives and friends.
The Service of Thanksgiving for the life of Jennifer Lynne Loveland will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 7, 2002, at the St. James' Church, with the Rev. Robert Haskell officiating.
Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home in Oneonta on Friday, during which time the family will be present.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Britney Loveland Scholarship Trust Fund, care of Dale Loveland, 154 Forest Way, Otego, NY 13825.
Private interment of her cremains will be at a later date in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery.
