Victor J. Dulkis

MARYLAND — Victor J. Dulkis, 74, passed away on Friday, Sept. 6, 2002, at his home with his family by his side.

He was born May 11, 1928, in Pittston, Pa., the son of Adam and Constance (Grodis) Dulkis.

Victor was a United States Marine Corps veteran.

He was a member of the Carpenter's Union in Oneonta, and was an avid outdoor sportsman and gardener.

He is survived by his wife, Luella (Belknap) Dulkis; children, Grodis Victor Dulkis of Tampa, Fla., and Ilena Dulkis Pagillo of Meridale; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Anthony and his wife, Florence, Dulkis of Maryland and a sister, Agnes Stankunas of Linden, N.J.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his son, Gale Dulkis, and two brothers, Joseph and Albert Dulkis.

A memorial vigil service will be held at 1 p.m., next Saturday, Sept. 14, at the Heller Funeral Home in Schenevus with the Rev. Edward Golding, pastor of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Schenevus, officiating.

The family has asked, in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made the Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820-2034 or the Schenevus-Maryland Emergency Squad, 105 County Highway 34, Schenevus, NY 12155.

Arrangements are by the Heller Funeral Home, 25 Arch St., Schenevus.

Anna Walther

PICKERINGTON, Ohio — Mrs. Anna Walther, 96, of Pickerington, Ohio, and formerly of Cooperstown, N.Y., and Brooklyn, N.Y., died Friday evening, Sept. 6, 2002, at Echo Manor in Pickerington, Ohio.

The youngest of 13 children, Mrs. Walther was born on Jan. 12, 1906, in Myjava, Austria-Hungary. She immigrated to the United States through Newfoundland in 1929, and came to live with her sister and brother-in-law in Skaneateles. From there she moved to New York City and was employed as a cook and a governess for several households.

It was in Manhattan that she met Ernest Walther, whom she married on May 15, 1938.

The Walthers first owned and operated an independent grocery store in Manhattan. Upon the construction of the Queens-Midtown Tunnel, they were forced to move the business to Brooklyn where they opened United Food Store. In 1975, they retired from the grocery business and moved to Cooperstown.

Following the death of her husband on June 10, 1991, Mrs. Walther moved to Attleboro, Mass., in 1992 to live with her son, Ernest, and his family. In 1995, they moved to Pickerington, Ohio, and she became a resident of Echo Manor in May of this year.

Mrs. Walther is survived by her three children, Herman Walther and his wife, Virginia, of Wilmington, N.C., Ernest Walther and his wife, Maureen, of Pickerington, Ohio, and Mrs. Helen Gannon of Cooperstown, N.Y.; and six grandchildren, Robert Walther, Richard Gannon, Donna Noll and her husband, Scott, Andrea Walther, Lara Walther and Stephanie Walther.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by all of her brothers and sisters; and a son-in-law, Truman F. Gannon, who died Aug. 5, 1987.

A private graveside service will be held at the convenience of the family in the Hartwick Seminary Cemetery, with the Rev. Paul R. Messner, pastor of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Hartwick Seminary, officiating.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date at the Epiphany Lutheran Church in Pickerington, Ohio, with the Rev. Dave Shugert, pastor, officiating.

Calling hours will be private and at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to a charity of one's choice.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Marsden Jay Dring

GREELEY,  Colo. — Marsden Jay Dring, 77, of Greeley,  Colo., died Thursday, Sept. 5, 2002, at his residence.

He was born April 20, 1925, in Yonkers, N.Y., son of Edith Long (Monroe) and Arthur W. Dring.

He married Gerry Kiser on Aug. 22, 1976, in Greeley. He was previously married to Ruth Fisher in 1948, in New Jersey.

He resided in Oneonta, N.Y., and Orange, Va., before moving to Greeley in 1974.

He graduated from Greenville High School in Greenville, N.Y., in 1942 and attended Rutgers in New Jersey, studying animal husbandry and agronomy from 1953 to 1954. He owned and operated a dairy farm from 1954 to 1968 after which he worked at the Hergert Land & Cattle Feedlot for 20 years in Windsor and retiring in 2000.

He was a member of the National Farmers Organization and served as secretary/treasurer for two years in New York, tri-county president for three years and in the public relations office for three years.

He served in the Civil Air Patrol as a wing commander in Oneonta and was a member of the Greeley Civitan Club for four years and was president from 1986-87 and president-elect from 1985-86.

He is survived by his wife, Gerry Dring of Greeley; three daughters, Pamela Dring of Eaton,  Colo., Lorri Ann Dring of Miller Place, N.Y., and Konnie Thompson, of Denver,  Colo.; four sons, Rodrick J. Dring, of Johnstown, N.Y., Thomas A. Dring, of Loveland,  Colo., Kent Norton of Colorado Springs,  Colo., and Kim Norton of Boulder,  Colo.; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his parents and two brothers, Morgan and Monroe.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 12, 2002, at Allnutt Funeral Service-Macy Chapel. Cremation will follow.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or Weld County Humane Society in care of Allnutt Funeral Service, 702 13th St., Greeley, CO 80631.

Marguerite E. Davidson

NEW BERLIN — Marguerite E. Davidson, a former resident of Sidney, and most recently a resident of Chase Memorial Nursing Home in New Berlin, died on Sept. 8, 2002, at the age of 101.

She was born in Sidney on Aug. 21, 1901, the daughter of John and Concetta Mazzarella, and was one of 10 children, all of whom predeceased her: Mary, Philomena Arrandale (Mannie), Rose Frank, George, Harry, Nick, Peter, Tony and Jack.

Marguerite graduated from Sidney High School in 1920. She was one of only two students from Delaware County who won a Regents Scholarship that year. Using that, plus working, she put herself through Cornell University, graduating with a bachelor of science degree in 1924.

For the next three years, Marguerite taught school in Fredonia and New Albany in western  Pennsylvania, teaching high school chemistry, general science, cooking and nutrition, art, child care and home management.

In June of 1927, she married William L. Davidson, whom she had met at Cornell. He predeceased her in 1965.

From then until 1995 she lived in Elizabeth, and then Union, N.J. There she was a substitute teacher for many years and homemaker, and was also active in the Townley Women's Club, was president and founder of the Putnam House Social Club, and served as a volunteer at the Union Hospital for 21 years, winning several awards, and finally having to relinquish that at age 91 because of her health.

She was an avid reader for most of her life.

Marguerite is survived by her daughter, Nancy Faye, and son-in-law, William R. Shore, of New Providence, N.J., and her son, William and daughter-in-law, Elizabeth (Betsy), of Sidney; four grandsons, Brian, Thomas, Christopher and Gordon; two great-granddaughters, Avery and Amy; plus several nephews and nieces.

Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2002, at C.H. Landers Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, with the Rev. Patricia Robinson, of the First Congregational Church of Sidney, officiating.

The family will be in attendance at 2 p.m. on Tuesday for visitation. Burial will be in Steuben Corners at a later date.

Memorial contributions can be sent to the First Congregational Church in Sidney.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers, Inc., Sidney.

Lloyd Baldwin

UNADILLA — Mr. Lloyd W. Baldwin of 4 Watson St., Unadilla, passed away on Saturday, Sept. 7, 2002, at The Hospital in Sidney.

Mr. Baldwin was born on July 28, 1921, in Binghamton, the son of George and Clara (Montagne) Baldwin.

He graduated from Unadilla High School in 1940, and then Clarkson College of Technology with a bachelor of arts in accounting. He also earned a master of science degree from Purdue University in 1952.

Mr. Baldwin served his country overseas during World War II from 1942 to 1946.

In 1958, he married Ruth A. Nichols. They shared 44 years of marriage.

Most of his life was spent teaching. He taught at New England College, New Mexico State University and Paul Smith's College. For 18 years he was a college professor in the accounting department of the State University College of Technology at Delhi, retiring in 1985.

Mr. Baldwin also had a love for antique cars and motorcycles and enjoyed traveling.

Mr. Baldwin was a lifetime member of the American Legion Joyce Bell Post No. 578 in Unadilla, the VFW Post No. 7914 in Sidney, the Mid-York Patient Account Manager's Association and the American Accounting Association.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth; his daughters, Lois M. Baldwin of Akron, Lana L. Baldwin of Cobleskill, Beth B. Baldwin of Hoboken, N.J., and Anne L. Bernier (and her husband, Ron) of Sidney; his son, Paul L. Baldwin of Unadilla; his grandchildren, Ian and Kyle Bernier; and several cousins.

Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2002, at the Joyce Funeral Home Inc., 179 Main St., Unadilla.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2002, at Evergreen Hill Cemetery, Unadilla, with the Rev. Michael Amos of the Fellowship Baptist Church officiating.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to Unadilla Emergency Squad, P.O. Box 579, Unadilla NY 13849 or the Delaware Valley Humane Society, P.O. Box 182, 101 East Main St., Sidney NY 13838.

Arrangements are by the Joyce Funeral Home Inc., of Unadilla.

Mary Mac Dougall

ONEONTA — Mary Norma (Bennett) Mac Dougall, 81, died Sept. 7, 2002, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

She was born Sept. 2, 1921, in Oneonta, the daughter of Norman E. and Theresa (Nelson) Bennett.

She was a graduate of Franklin Central School and the Binghamton General Hospital registered nurses program.

During World War II she was a 1st Lt. in the Army Nursing Corps and served in the European Theater of operations for three years.

Mary Norma Bennett and Robert J. Mac Dougall were united in marriage on Sept. 4, 1948, at the First United Methodist Church in Oneonta.

She was a lifetime resident of Oneonta and worked many years at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital as a supervisor and for 10 years as director of nursing service at Stamford Community Hospital. She was a member of the New York State Nurses Association and the First United Methodist Church.

Mary was predeceased by her parents; a brother, Robert N. Bennett; in 1991, her husband, Robert J. Mac Dougall; and in March of 2001, her son, Ted Mac Dougall.

She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Linda Mac Dougall of Amsterdam; four grandchildren, Frank Mac Dougall of Fonda, Amy Mac Dougall, Charles Mac Dougall and Michael Mac Dougall, all of Amsterdam; and a great-grandson, Sean Mac Dougall, and great-granddaughter, Meaghan Mac Dougall, both of Fonda.

Calling hours will be from 3 to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2002, and the family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 12, 2002, at Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Memorial donations may be made to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta NY 13820.

Eric T. Meyerhoff

EAST MEREDITH — Eric T. Meyerhoff of East Meredith died Monday, Sept. 9, 2002, in Oneonta.

He was born Dec. 21, 1921, in Nordkampen, Germany, son of the late Heinrich and Marie (Ehlermann) Meyerhoff.

Eric immigrated to the United States in 1928. He was a World War II Army veteran. He was awarded the Silver Star, the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart and various campaign medals.

In 1948, Eric married Ruth Rotzler in Walton; they resided on their dairy farm in East Meredith.

Eric was a charter and honorary member of the East Meredith Fire Department. He was also a charter member of the East Meredith Fish and Game Club.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth (Rotzler) Meyerhoff; his five children, Ericka M. Balch of Fayetteville, Roger J. Meyerhoff of Newnan, Ga., Faye S. Swing of Cobleskill, Garth D. Meyerhoff of Martha's Vineyard, Mass., and Craig A. Meyerhoff of Oneonta; grandchildren, Erich Brown, Adrienne Stevens, Macord Stevens, Cortney Daniel, Christopher Meyerhoff, Matthew Meyerhoff, Alexandra Swing, Samantha Meyerhoff and Robert Meyerhoff; aunt, Wilma Knak; and a niece, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his brothers, Henry and Herman; and an infant sister.

A memorial vigil will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2002, at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, at which time the family will be in attendance.

The family has asked, in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to either the East Meredith Fire Department Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 65, East Meredith, NY 13757 or the Meridale Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 104, Meridale, NY 13806 in loving memory of Eric T. Meyerhoff.

Arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Grace Goodnough

DELHI — Grace L. Goodnough, 92, former longtime Delhi resident, passed away on Saturday night, Sept. 7, 2002, at St. Mary's Hospital in Amsterdam.

The youngest of 12 children of William and Celestia (Newman) Shields, she was born Jan. 14, 1910, in Sawkill, Pa., received her teacher training at the Walton Normal School, and taught for a brief time before her marriage to Raymond C. Goodnough on July 1, 1934, in Grand Gorge. "Ray" died May 9, 1981.

Grace worked with her husband in the former Delhi Victory Market, where he was the manager, and, subsequently, in food services at the State University College of Technology, until her retirement.

A Delhi resident for more than 50 years, and member of the Second Presbyterian Church (United Ministry), Grace was an avid contract bridge player in the "Novus Club," moving to Amsterdam in 1988.

Surviving are a daughter, Sheila R. (Ernest) Fierro, Northville; two sons, William C. Goodnough, Carrollton,  Texas, and R. Scott (Regina) Goodnough, Brooksville, Fla.; 10 grandchildren, Kathryn Caruso, Randall Scharr, Marian Scharr, Laurel Florio, Amy Charland, Toni Fierro, William Goodnough, Suzanne Curley, Diane Alexander and John Goodnough; 16 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild; a sister-in-law, Dollie Goodnough; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends are invited to call on Friday, Sept. 13, 7 to 9 p.m., when the family will be in attendance at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi, where funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, by the Rev. Lisa Heckman, with burial following in the Woodland Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Camphill Village, Copake, NY 12516.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet & Son, Delhi.

Edith J. MacCollam

ALBANY — Edith Jacqueline "Jackie" MacCollam died Aug. 20, 2002, in Albany, of complications from her long struggle against Parkinson's disease.

Born on Oct. 30, 1917, in Oneonta, she was the daughter of Jessie Hughes and A. Gay  Jones and sister of M. Charrie Jones, all of whom predeceased her.

She was married more than 30 years to Dr. Allan MacCollam and mother to the Rev. Joel (Jann) MacCollam; and beloved grandmother to their children, Jordan and Jessica.

Jackie is also survived by several nieces and nephews, including Kevin MacCollam, Jean Bayer, Joan Krchniak, David VanEtten and Philip VanEtten.

Jackie graduated from Oneonta High School in 1934, and four years later from Oneonta State Normal School.

She taught lower grades for the Bethlehem school system in the World War II era before becoming office manager for Dr. Hugh Leahy.

She also managed her husband's fast-growing pediatric practice for several years in the 1950s.

Best known for her love of music, Jackie was one of the first woman baritone players in local marching bands and a consummate piano and organ performer who encouraged Joel in his own artistry as a classical organist.

A modest athlete, she also enjoyed many years of bowling at the University Club and golf at Schuyler Meadows Club.

Funeral services will be private, at the convenience of the family, with burial at the family plot in Oneonta.

Gordon E. Purchell

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. — Gordon Eugene Purchell, 65, of Fredericksburg, Va., and formerly of Saugerties, N.Y., and Roxbury, N.Y., died Sunday, Sept. 8, 2002, at his residence.

He retired from the U.S. Navy after 30 years.

He was a member of Spotsylvania Presbyterian Church, Fleet Reserve Association, Fredericksburg Moose Lodge No. 1655, American Legion Post, Richmond, and Union No. 689.

Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Loisanne Long Purchell; two sons, Glen Purchell and Gordon Wade Purchell, both of Fredericksburg, Va.; two daughters, Susan Hollenbeck of Covington, and Robin Baker of Ferndale, Wash.; two brothers, Robert Halaquist of Franklin, N.Y., and George Ford of Saugerties, N.Y.; seven grandchildren, Noel and Jeremy Purchell, Logan and Richard Hollenbeck, Joel, John and Sara Baker; niece, Sally Naccarato of Fredericksburg, Va.; and several other nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 3, 2002, at Fort Meyer Chapel, with the Rev. Mike Motsko officiating.

Burial will follow in Arlington National Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2002, at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg, Va.
