Ralph G. Pebler

ROXBURY — Ralph G. Pebler, 67, of Roxbury passed away Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2002, at his home.

He was born Oct. 17, 1934, in Amityville, the son of Marie M. Kirsch and Henry Pebler.

He married Joan Dugan on Jan. 5, 1958, at the United Methodist Church in Roxbury.

He graduated from Lindenhurst High School in 1952.

He served in the U.S. Navy from 1952-1956. He spent his entire career working in the marine industry. He was a marine mechanic and a designer for heat exchangers, employed by SenDure in Bay Shore and Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

He was a member of the Ralph S. Ives Jr. Legion Post 1785; Delaware County American Legion, serving as sergeant of arms for several years; Jay Gould Memorial Reformed Church, Roxbury, served several years as deacon; had been an active volunteer fireman, Breslau Engine Co. 1, Lindenhurst, from 1957-1964; and member of Lindenhurst Exempt Firemen's Association.

Ralph enjoyed woodworking and outdoor activities.

He is survived by his wife, Joan Pebler, Roxbury; one daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Arty Sprague; one son and daughter-in-law, Steven and Rossanna Pebler; and eight grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 14, 2002, at the Jay Gould Memorial Reformed Church, Roxbury, with the Rev. Richard Dykstra officiating.

Calling hours are from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 13, 2002, at the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury.

Burial will be in the Roxbury Cemetery, Roxbury.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Ralph's name to the Jay Gould Memorial Reformed Church, P.O. Box 267, Roxbury or to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta.

Funeral arrangements are by the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury.

Dorothy Podpadec

NEW BERLIN — Dorothy Mae Podpadec, 82, of Mount Upton passed away Thursday, Sept. 12, 2002, at Chase Memorial Nursing Home in New Berlin.

She was born Aug. 11, 1920, daughter of the late Frank and Helen Petrovich Podpadec in Richmondville.

Dorothy was employed by E.C.D. of Bendix in Sidney when she retired.

She is survived by her sister, Helen Mattice, East Worcester; halfbrother, Victor Bobnick, Schenectady; her cat, Mandy; and nieces and nephews.

She is predeceased by two sisters, Frances Holley and Ellie Skinner.

Funeral and committal services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 14, 2002, at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney. Friends may call Saturday, prior to the

funeral.

Burial will be in Evergreen Hill Cemetery in Unadilla.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Mount Upton Emergency Squad or the Delaware Valley Humane Society in Sidney.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers Inc., Sidney.

Susan Joan Bird

SPENCER — Susan Joan Bird, 47, of Spencer died Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2002, at Robert Packer Hospital, Sayre, Pa.

She was born in Sidney on Aug. 9, 1955.

Susan is survived by her husband, Kenneth J. Bird; three sons, Timothy, Andrew and Daniel Bird, all of Spencer; her parents, Carl E. and Barbara A. (Bartlett) Olson, Afton, and Beverly Hills, Fla.; two brothers and a sister, William, Thomas and Sally Olson, Las Vegas, Nev.; three brothers-in-law, Robert Bird, Walton, Richard Bird, Salisbury, Md., and Jeffrey Bird, Delhi; and three nieces, Shawn Rictor, Nashville, Tenn., Kathrine Bird, Salisbury, Md., and Patricia Bird, Long Island.

Susan was predeceased by her sister, Sandra Olson.

Friends may call at the Allen-Manzer Funeral Home in Spencer, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 14, 2002.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 15, 2002, at the Federated Church in Spencer, where she was a member; the Rev. Don Guiles and the Rev. Burton Huth are officiating.

Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Spencer.

Memorials may be directed to Spencer Federated Church or Spencer Emergency Squad, Spencer, NY 14883.

Victor J. Dulkis

MARYLAND — A memorial vigil service for Victor J. Dulkis, who died Friday, Sept. 6, 2002, will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 14, 2002, at the Heller Funeral Home, 25 Arch St., Schenevus.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care or the Schenevus-Maryland Emergency Squad.

David D. Burroughs

OXFORD — David D. Burroughs, 69, of Oxford, died Thursday, Sept. 12, 2002, at his home.

He was born on Sept. 9, 1933, in Ticonderoga, the son of the late George F. and Margaret J. (Donihee) Burroughs.

On Dec. 14, 1957, in St. Vincent DePaul Church of Albany, he married June Studley, who survives.

Besides his wife, June, he is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Ann Burroughs Sun and James Sun of Springfield, Va.; his son, James Burroughs of San Antonio,  Texas; his brother and sister-in-law, Paul D. and Mary-Lloyd Burroughs of Ticonderoga; and his grandchildren, Daniel Kent Burroughs of Earlville and Eric Sun, Emily Sun and David Sun, all of Springfield, Va.

Dave was a graduate of Ticonderoga High School, Class of 1951. He attended the State University at Albany from 1951 to 1953. He then entered the United States Army and served in the 11th Airborne at Fort Campbell, Ky. Following his Army service, he returned to SUNY Albany from 1955 until 1958, when he received his master's degree. He then took additional hours for his administrative certificate at SUNY Albany. He also attended St. Lawrence University on a NDEA summer grant.

He taught 12th-grade history and American studies at Corinth High School from 1958 to 1968. While at Corinth, he started the wrestling team and was a junior varsity football coach and Student Council adviser. He was also the adviser to the Mock United Nations Debate team and took his American studies students to New York City to visit the United Nations and the New York Stock Exchange. He served as a referee for five years in Section II football.

From 1968 to 1973, he was high school principal at Moravia High School. From 1973 to 1975, he was superintendent of Hartford Central School. In 1975, he became the district superintendent of schools at Oxford Academy and Central School, retiring in 1988. He worked for the Cornell Rural Schools Program. He then served interim appointments at schools in New Berlin, South New Berlin, Cincinnatus, Sidney and Hancock, until 1998.

He was an active member of St. Joseph's Church and served as a lector. He was recently re-elected to his third term on the village of Oxford Board of Trustees. He was a member of the Chenango County Senior Citizens Council, the Chenango County Planning Board, the New York State School Administrators Association, of which he was a life member. He was a member of the Lake Ludlow Club, the Chenango County Retired Teachers Association, the Bass Masters and the Norwich YMCA.

Dave brought a philosophy of education problems to Oxford of the 4 "B's," Beans, Bands, Balls and Buses; that was modified by the teachers in the Oxford Primary School to Bugs, Babies and Burroughs.

David has willed his remains to anatomical research at the SUNY Health Science Center at Syracuse.

A memorial Mass will be held on Monday, Sept. 16, at 4:30 p.m. from St. Joseph's Church in Oxford, with the Mass concelebrated by the Rev. Thomas Ward and the Rev. Douglas Cunningham.

The family will receive friends at the rear of the church following the Mass.

Memorial contributions may be made to Oxford Dollars for Scholars, c/o Kate Constantine, Oxford High School, South  Washington Ave, Oxford, NY 13830.

Arrangements are being provided by the Behe Funeral Home of Oxford.

Carmen J. Giovannone

COBLESKILL — Carmen J. Giovannone, 68, of Settles Mt. Road, Cobleskill, died Friday, Sept. 13, 2002, at his home, following a long illness.

He was born April 18, 1934, at Cobleskill to Carmino and Victoria Sandora Giovannone.

He attended Cobleskill Central School, Siena College and the State University College at Oneonta. He taught at Oneonta Junior High School from 1962 to 1967 and was a history teacher at Copiague High School on Long Island from l967 to 1991. He served as director of the Schoharie County Youth Bureau from 1992 to 2002.

He received an honorary degree from State University College of Agriculture and Technology at Cobleskill in 1988 for his work with the youth of Schoharie County. He developed many programs to improve educational opportunities. He was an accomplished photographer and avid reader.

Mr. Giovannone served in the United States Merchant Marines during the Suez Crises and in the United States Army from 1957 to 1959.

On April 26, 1990, at Cobleskill, he was married to Kathleen Mangan, who survives. Other survivors include his sister and brother-in-law, Anne and David Samson, of Cerritos,  Calif.; nephew, Mark Samson, of Cerritos,  Calif.; nieces, Vitoria Samson, of  Washington, D.C., and Marianne Samson, of Santa Barbara,  Calif.; a stepson, Brian Mann; and stepgrandson, Michael Mann of Santa Ana,  Calif.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Monday, Sept. 16, at 11 a.m. at St. Vincent de Paul Church on  Washington Avenue in Cobleskill.

Interment will be at St. Vincent de Paul Cemetery in Cobleskill with military honors.

Friends may call at the Robert A. Guffin Funeral Home, at 108 Chapel St. in Cobleskill on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Anna's Church Building Fund, Summit, NY, or to the Catskill Area Hospice, Cobleskill, NY, or the Giovannone Scholarship Fund, c/o Bank of Richmondville, Cobleskill, NY.

Arlene M. Wormuth

GREENE — Arlene M. Wormuth, 73, formerly of Oneonta, and a retired Milford Central School teacher, passed away Friday afternoon, Sept. 13, 2002, at her residence in Greene.

She was predeceased by her husband, Marx "Pop" Wormuth.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, DeForest and Tammy Wormuth of Belvedere, N.J.; a daughter and son-in-law, Roberta and Richard Brundege of Greene; three grandchildren, Andrew Wormuth, Nicole Kovfacs and Jeffery Jones; a sister-in-law, Jeane McMullen of Zephyrhills, Fla.; an aunt, Mary Young of Oneonta; and several nieces and nephews.

Private memorial services will be held at the convenience of the family.

Memorial contributions in memory of Arlene may be made to St. Joseph's Indian School, North Main Street, Chamberlain, S.D. 57326 or American Lung Association, 130 Main St.,  Johnson City, NY 13790.

Arrangements are by the Root Funeral Home, 23 North Chenango St., Greene.

Harold H. Crumb

MORRIS — Harold H. Crumb of Morris died Saturday, Sept. 14, 2002, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

Harold was born on Harris Hill in the town of Morris on March 12, 1922. He was the son of Virgil W. Crumb and Elsie May (Harris) Crumb. When he was 3 years old, his parents moved from the farm to the village of Morris, which Harold called "home" his entire life. His mother passed away when he was 10.

At an early age (mid-teens) he worked for the Linn Manufacturing Corp. as a night watchman, shop maintenance person, water wheel operator and fireman of the coal- and oil-fed furnaces, working 14 hours each night for three nights a week: Friday, Saturday and Monday. He was thus employed for two years and four months. Morris Central School graduated Harold in 1939.

At the conclusion of his employment, above, he moved to Albany for the purpose of attending Albany Business College, from which he graduated.

During World War II and it conclusion Harold was a member of the New York State Guard, Adjutant General's staff, field finance (payroll) division, being discharged as a technical sergeant.

He was employed for four years during legislative sessions as clerk to Assemblyman Chester T. Backus, and as a statistician in the Education Department in off-times. He worked briefly as a stock transfer tax examiner for the state Department of Taxation and Finance.

In 1945, he joined the state comptroller's newly formed Division of Municipal Affairs, from which he retired in 1988. During this time he served, variously, as chief examiner in the Syracuse and Binghamton geographic areas.

Harold was a lifetime member of the Morris United Methodist Church. He was a Free and Accepted Mason for 60 years, his blue lodge being Butternuts No. 515, and had a similar tenure as a 32 Mason in the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite of the Valley of Albany. He was also a member of Englewood Elks Lodge No. 2378.

He was a certificated public accountant. Harold was an avid hunter and fisherman. Woodworking was a chief hobby, possibly superseded by construction with stones.

He married Marilyn Ida Whitney in 1951 in Oneonta. They made their home in the village of Morris.

Harold is survived by his loving wife, Marilyn, of 50 years; a daughter, Rebecca M. Crumb of New York City; a son and daughter-in-law, Leonard and Pamela Crumb; and granddaughter, Lauren of Carlisle, Pa., a son and daughter-in-law, Daniel and Shari Crumb; and granddaughters, Elizabeth and Katherine of Sedalia,  Colo.; and a half-brother, Stephen of Duncanville,  Texas.

A younger brother, Wilmer, predeceased him.

Graveside committal and Masonic services will be at the Hillington Cemetery in Morris at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 21, 2002.

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 21, 2002, at the United Methodist Church in Morris, with the Rev. Ann Blair officiating.

In lieu of flowers, friends are asked to make contributions to the United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, Morris, NY 13808 or the Masonic Brotherhood Fund, care of Butternuts Lodge No. 515, P.O. Box 288, Gilbertsville, NY 13776.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Inez C. Bennett

ONEONTA — Inez C. Bennett, 86, a resident at the Fox Hospital Nursing Home in Oneonta, and formerly of Franklin, passed away Saturday, Sept. 14, 2002, at her residence.

She was born April 6, 1916, in Walton, the daughter of the late Orlando Lee and Nettie Mains Palmatier.

Inez was a lifelong Delaware County resident.

She was first married to Donald Teter on March 7, 1932. He predeceased her April 7, 1972. On Oct. 8, 1977, she married Kenneth L. Bennett in Franklin.

Mrs. Bennett was a longtime member of the Community Bible Church in Franklin, the Franklin Grange and Franklin Eastern Star Lodge.

Inez loved to cook and bake. For several years she baked with the Women's Federation of her church for its food booth at the Delaware County Fair in Walton.

She is survived by her husband, Kenneth L. Bennett, of Oneonta; three sons and daughters-in-law, Donald and Alvina Teter of Oneonta, Richard and Barbara Teter of Greene, and Eugene and Jean Teter of Columbus, Ind.; stepdaughter and son-in-law, Phyllis and Robert Griggs of Victor; five half-sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Bell of Unadilla, Mrs. William Cotton of Sidney Center, Mrs. Virginia Frewert of Gilbertsville, Mrs. Laura Mullinex of Franklin and Mrs. Louise Stanton of Honesdale, Pa. She is also survived by 13 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2002, from the Community Bible Church in Franklin, with Dr. Walt Schlundt, pastor, officiating. The family will receive family and friends from 10 am. until services at 11 a.m.

Burial will follow in the Ouleout Valley Cemetery in Franklin.

Friends are invited to call from noon until 5 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 17, at the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Memorial gifts in her name may be directed to the Community Bible Church, Franklin, NY or to the Franklin Emergency Squad, if desired.

Raymond Reynolds

PRATTSVILLE — Raymond Reynolds, 86, a longtime resident of Prattsville, died Friday, Sept. 13, 2002.

Mr. Reynolds was born May 2, 1916, in Andes, the son of the late Charles and the late Edith Haynes Reynolds.

Raymond married Cynthia O. Williams on Oct. 4, 1942. She predeceased him on Jan. 26, 1980.

He served in the Army in World War II, in the European Theater.

Raymond was a trucker, employed by Standard Bridge of Albany, and most recently served as a driver for "Meals on Wheels" in Grand Gorge.

He is survived by his son, Leonard M. Reynolds and his wife, Christena, of Otego; a sister, Gwen Cole and her husband, Glenn, of Andes; two brothers, Omar Reynolds of Prattsville, and Charles Reynolds and his wife, Neysa, of Gilboa. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and nephews.

Raymond was predeceased by his sisters, Evelyn Bellinger and Lillian Gray; and a brother, Ely Reynolds.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Hall Funeral Home, 40 Main St., Stamford. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 17, in the Prattsville United Methodist Church, Prattsville, with the Rev. Ellen Oliveto officiating.

Burial will be in the Fairlawn Cemetery, Prattsville.

Contributions may be made in Raymond's memory to the Prattsville Rescue Squad in Prattsville.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Hall Funeral Home in Stamford, under the direction of William A. Tari.

Francis J. Salerno

DELHI — Francis Joseph Salerno, 74, of Delhi, died Saturday, Sept. 14, 2002, at home following a lengthy illness.

He was born March 30, 1928, in Brooklyn, the son of Joseph and Rosaria (Catalano) Salerno.

He married Concetta Marie Basile on June 3, 1951, at the Church of the Holy Name in Brooklyn.

Mrs. Salerno survives, as do his children, Frank Joseph and Karen Salerno, Anthony and Margeritte Salerno, Steven and Joanne Salerno and Mark and Sheri Salerno; 10 grandchildren; and two brothers.

A son, John Salerno, predeceased him.

A Delhi businessman, he owned and operated Nina's Restaurant in Delhi.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving aboard the USS Repose and USS Thompson.

During his lifetime, he enjoyed residences in Brooklyn, Italy, Central Islip, Long Island, Stamford and Delhi.

A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2002, at Sacred Heart Church in Stamford, with the Rev. Anthony Ligato as celebrant.

Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2002, at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

Burial will follow the service at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Stamford.

Contributions in his memory may be made to Catskill Area Hospice.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.
