COOPERSTOWN — Mrs. Mary Evelina Gates Mone, 99, of Cooperstown, died Friday evening, Sept. 27, 2002, at The Meadows.

Evelyn was born on July 7, 1903, in Easton, the eldest daughter of Edward and Mary Evelina (Wood) Gates.

Raised in  Washington County, Evelyn contracted spinal tuberculosis at the age of 13, and was admitted to the New York State Reconstruction Home, now known as the Helen Hayes Hospital, in West Haverstraw.

When she was cured after a hospitalization of six years, she applied there for her first job as a telephone operator and file clerk.

She later went on to attend the Packard Business School in New York City and, upon graduation, became a stenographer.

For 53 years, she was employed as an executive secretary in employment administration, the head of personnel at the New York State Reconstruction Home, and director of the payroll department at the Rockland State Hospital in Orangeburg. Because of her many years of employment in the hospitals, she became well-known by doctors and others as a valuable resource and a wealth of knowledge concerning hospital operations and management.

While employed at the New York State Orthopedic Hospital, Evelyn met her husband, Joseph, who was also a former patient and later employed there as a painter. On June 25, 1928, Evelyn and Joseph were married in Dudley, Mass. They shared a common interest in music: she played the piano and he played the violin.

During her years in Rockland County, Evelyn was a member of the Trinity Episcopal Church in Garnerville, where she sang in the choir, served as president of the women's group, and, in that Episcopal diocese, was the first female Senior Warden of Trinity Church's Vestry.

From 1950 to 1954, she was active in the North Rockland School District, serving as the PTA president for two years and as a delegate to the Board of Education for three years.

In 1984, Evelyn moved to Cooperstown, and became a member of the Community Bible Chapel in Toddsville, where she was active in the prayer chain. She was also a member of the Women's Club of Cooperstown, the Cooperstown Area Christian Women's Club, as well as the AARP and the New York State Civil Service Association. A devoted and enthusiastic Christian, she enjoyed reading her Bible each day and sharing her faith with others.

Her other hobbies included working on crossword puzzles, collecting figurines of cats and traveling around the United States.

She will be remembered as an independent, hard-working and career-minded woman, who was easy to talk to.

She is survived by her son, Joseph L.G. Mone and his wife, Bernadette Popek Mone, of Cooperstown; two grandsons, Joseph L.N. Mone and his wife, Brenda, of Garnerville, and Dominic J. Mone and his wife, Vicki, of York, Pa.; four great-grandchildren, Michael, Matthew, Melissa and Maximus Mone; three stepgrandchildren, Walter V. Popek of Knoxville, Tenn., Jed Ryan Popek of Los Angeles, and Jessica Amy Popek of Knoxville, Tenn.; one sister, Minnie Call of Newport, N.H.; three nieces, Janice McMahon of Newport, N.H., Evelyn Rizner of Dudley, Mass., and Ruth Mensing of Bolton, Conn.; three nephews, Robert Call of Spokane, Wash., Fred Gates of Pewaukee, Wis. and Edward Gates of Milford, Conn.; and many grand nieces and nephews.

She is also survived by many friends including, Maryjo Nelson Mone, Virginia Ingalls, Mr. and Mrs. David Fundis, Donna Fenno, Kim Potts, Harriet Smith, Al Hotaling, Wayne Granger, Sue Couse, the Rev. and Mrs. Klosheim, the Michael Bolton family, the Dr. Lee Edmonds family and the Mark Rathbun family.

She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph, who died in October of 1967; and her grandson, Enrico Conrad Mone, who died on Nov. 7, 1988.

A graveside committal service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2002, at the Mt. Repose Cemetery in Haverstraw, with the Rev. Samuel Snodgrass, retired Episcopal priest, officiating.

A memorial service will be held at a later date at the Community Bible Chapel in Cooperstown.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made in Evelyn's memory to the Community Bible Chapel, 577 Greenough Road, Cooperstown, NY 13326.
