Karl Douglas Nelson, 49, of Tully died Aug. 17 of heart failure. Born in Plainfield, N.J., he had also lived in Weston, Conn., before moving to Tully 10 years ago. He graduated from Cornell University and received a doctorate from State University at Albany. He was a professor of geology and chair of the department of earth sciences at Syracuse University for 10 years. He did a postdoctoral fellowship at University of Otago in Dunedin, New Zealand. He was a senior research associate of the graduate faculty at Cornell from 1981 to 1991. He was director of the Consortium for Continental Reflection Profiling from 1982 to 1990 and director of Project INDEPTH from 1992 to 2002.Survivors: His wife of five years, the former Nanette Rutkowski; his parents, Karl J. and Elizabeth Schmeisser Nelson of Weston; a sister, Katharine Nelson of Mechanicsburg, Pa. Melva B. Nielsen

Melva B. Nielsen, 84, of Mill Street, DeRuyter, died Friday. Born in Sioux City, Iowa, she graduated from Canastota High School and Cornell University. She was a U.S. Postal Service clerk in DeRuyter. She was a member of the Owen Woodford American Legion Post 894 Auxiliary, United Church of DeRuyter and the former DeRuyter Grange. Her husband, Gordon, died in 1993.Survivors: A daughter, Joyce Davis of Limestone; three sons, Kenneth of Dolgeville, Alfred of Syracuse and Dale of Cortland; a sister, Winona Bugg of Sumter, S.C.; a brother, C. Emerson Brower of Tifton, Ohio; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren. Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday at Smith Funeral Home. Burial, Hillcrest Cemetery. Levi S. Parsons

Levi Seymour Parsons, 98, of Marcellus died Friday. Born in Marcellus, he graduated from Syracuse University. He was a self-employed contractor and built many houses in Marcellus and Skaneateles. He was a 74-year member and the oldest surviving past master of Morning Star Lodge 524 F&AM. He was an elder at Marcellus First Presbyterian Church. He served on the Marcellus Village Board and the Marcellus School Board for more than 50 years. He was a member of the Rotary Club. His wife of 69 years, the former Mildred Sandford, died in 2001.Survivors: Two daughters, Beverly Dann of Elmira and Barbara Hildreth of Vienna, Va.; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren. Services: 3 p.m. Tuesday at Norris Funeral Home. Burial, Highland Cemetery. Calling hours, 1 to 3 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, 33 North St., Marcellus. Marguerite Pope

Marguerite  Jones Pope, 100, of Martha's Vineyard, Mass., died Thursday. Born in Newton, Mass., she lived in New Haven, Conn., and in Syracuse 17 years before moving to Martha's Vineyard in 2001. She graduated from Vassar College. She was a member of Daughters of the American Revolution and the New England Mayflower Descendants. Her husband, Daniel S. Jr., died in 1984.Survivors: A daughter, Barbara B. Pope Peckham of Oak Bluffs, Mass.; two sons, Daniel S. III of Palmyra and Robert G. of Colorado; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren. John J. Ruane

John J. Ruane, 80, of Solvay died Saturday. Born in Albany, he lived in the Syracuse area since 1949. He retired in 1986 after 40 years with AT&T. He was vice president of Communication Workers union Local 1152 for two years and president of the local for 20 years. He was an Army veteran of World War II.Survivors: His wife of 49 years, the former Elizabeth Iadanza; a daughter, Kathleen Tompkins of Onondaga Hill; three grandchildren. Services: 9 a.m. Tuesday at Family Funeral Care. Burial, Greenlawn Memorial Park. Calling hours, 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home, 2601 Milton Ave., Solvay. F. Douglas Smith, 86, of Camillus died Saturday at Van Duyn Home & Hospital. Born in Camillus, he graduated from Camillus High School. He retired in 1979 after 20 years with the West Genesee School District. He was a life member of Camillus Baptist Church and a member of Camillus Seniors. His wife, the former Mary Lewandowski, died in 1992.Survivors: Two sons, David D. of Camillus and Lawrence W. of Eastwood; four grandchildren. Services: 10 a.m. Tuesday at B.L. Edward A. Bullard Sr

Edward Arthur Bullard Sr., 83, of 700 E. Brighton Ave., formerly of 1124 E. Genesee St., Syracuse, died Thursday. Born in Columbus, Ga., he attended Central Technical High School, Syracuse. He retired in 1982 after 15 years as a maintenance worker at Carrier Corp. He previously worked 20 years at University Hospital and was the building and grounds supervisor at Dr. David Marshall's orthodontist office for 25 years. He was a member of St. Luke's Missionary Baptist Church. He was an Army veteran of World War II and the Korean War. Survivors: A daughter, Marlyne Frank of Syracuse; three sons, Lee J. of Pembroke Pines, Fla., Edward A. Jr. of Flint, Mich., and Maurice of Nashville, Tenn.; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren. Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday in St. Luke's Missionary Baptist Church. Burial, Onondaga County Veterans Memorial Cemetery. Francis H. "Fritz" Coyne, 77, of Otisco Valley Road, Marietta, died Saturday. Born in Utica, he lived many years in Clark Mills and Syracuse before moving to the Otisco Lake area in 1975. He retired in 1981 after 33 years with Sperry Univac. He was a member of the USS Yorktown CV-10 Association and American Legion Post 26, Clark Mills. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. Survivors: Three daughters, Martha Coyne and Bridget Coyne, both of Jacksonville, Fla., and Megan Coyne of Skaneateles; nine sons, Michael of Otisco, Patrick of Syracuse, Timothy of Tully, Paul of Baldwinsville, Brian of Hamburg, Daniel of Fairmount, John and Matthew, both of Howlett Hill, and Thomas of Skaneateles; a sister, Lois Finnegan of Whitesboro; several grandchildren. John W. Culkin Sr., 79, of Grover Street, East Syracuse, died Saturday. He was born in Syracuse. He retired in 1977 as a supervisor after 32 years at General Electric Co. He was a member and past commander of American Legion Post 359 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9596. He was a member of the East Syracuse Lions Club. He was an Army veteran of World War II. His first wife, Evelyn D., died in 1997. Survivors: His wife, the former Margaret Ford of Florida; a daughter, Elizabeth Olsen of East Syracuse; four sons, John Jr. of East Syracuse, George T. of Minoa, James E. of Parish and Gerald of Pleasant Valley; two sisters, Charlotte Culkin of East Syracuse and Joan Bersani of Syracuse; a brother, Thomas of Syracuse; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren. Richard, Shawn and Stanley, all of the Auburn area; a sister, Patricia Bergerstock of Niles; two brothers, William and Thomas, both of Niles; 21 grandchildren.
