Georgia M. Hymers

DELHI — Georgia M. Hymers, 96, a 60-year Delhi resident, passed away peacefully on Monday afternoon, Sept. 30, 2002, at Countryside Care Center, Delhi, where she had been a resident for the past eight years.

The daughter of William J. and Jeanette (Mills) Shaver, she was born Aug. 8, 1906, at Holiday Brook, Pepacton, town of Colchester.

Thrice married, her husbands were Edward Smith, Robert Hunter and William Hymers, and all have predeceased her.

A homemaker most of her life, Georgia was a cook at the former Delhi Hospital in earlier years.

Before her declining health, she was an active member of the Delhi Community Church — where she taught Bible study and Sunday school — the Elk Creek Club and the Delhi Senior Citizens.

Surviving are a daughter, Irene J. Tietbohl, Delhi; a son and daughter-in-law, Charles R. and Patricia Hunter, Ocala, Fla.; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a son, William E. Smith (1975); three sisters and two brothers.

Friends are invited to attend services at 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 3, at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi, with the Rev. Lisa S. Heckman officiating, after which the family will greet those present, with burial following in the Woodland Cemetery.

Memorial contributions to Catskill Area Hospice will be appreciated.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet & Son, Delhi.

Philip 'Phil' Eckler

LANCASTER,  Calif. — Philip "Phil" Eckler, 59, of Lancaster,  Calif., formerly of Cooperstown, N.Y., died Aug. 11, 2002, after a lengthy illness.

Phil was born in Cedarville, N.Y., on June 13, 1943, and attended Cooperstown school before moving to California, where he had his own painting business.

He was known as "Papa" to his four grandchildren.

Phil is survived by his wife, Barbara; a son, Mark Eckler, his wife, Wendy, and their twin daughters, Melissa and Jessica of Twin Falls, Idaho; a daughter, Robin Gauthier, her husband, Ken, and their two sons, Jacob and Aaron of Rosamond,  Calif. He is also survived by one brother, Edwin Eckler of Cooperstown, N.Y.; and three sisters, Glenna Knight, Priscilla Vargo and Rebekah Roberts, all of Lakeland, Fla.

A memorial service was held in Lancaster,  Calif., on Aug. 16, 2002, and burial was Sept. 14, 2002, in Hartwick Seminary, N.Y., beside his beloved parents, Fredrick and Rena Eckler.

Mary T. Majoris

GILBOA — Mrs. Mary T. Majoris, 75, of Stryker Road died Saturday, Sept. 28, 2002, at Robinson Terrace, Stamford.

Mrs. Majoris was born on Jan. 3, 1927, in San Antonio and was a registered nurse who worked for Mount Siani Hospital in New York City, before moving to this area many years ago.

Surviving Mrs. Majoris are her husband, Steve J. Majoris, whom she married on Nov. 1, 1943; three daughters, Marie Cornell, North Blenheim, Barbara Brennan, Albuquerque, N.M., and Susan Majoris, New York City; one son, Stephen Majoris, Kerman,  Calif.; and four grandchildren.

She was predeceased by one daughter, Juliann Lutsky in 2000; and one grandchild.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2002, at the Palmer & Shaylor Funeral Home, 134 River St., Middleburgh.

A private funeral service will be held at the convenience of the family.

Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery, North Blenheim.

Jennifer L. Loveland

OTEGO — Interment services for Jennifer Lynne Loveland, who passed away Sept. 4, 2002, will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 4, 2002, at the Oneonta Plains Cemetery, with the Rev. Robert Haskell officiating.

Friends are welcome to attend.

Funeral services were previously held on Sept. 7, 2002.

Arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Home.

Carmel J. Pugliese

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Carmel J. Pugliese, 80, of Jackies passed away peacefully on Tuesday morning, Oct. 1, 2002, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown, with the comfort of his family at his side.

He was born on June 23, 1922, in Cooperstown, a son of the late Felice and Mary Ruggerio Pugliese. A lifelong area resident, he was educated in Cooperstown.

During World War II he proudly served his country with the U.S. Marine Corps. A recipient of the Purple Heart, he was wounded at Guadalcanal.

He was first married to Mary Trusz in Cooperstown. A resident of Richfield Springs since 1963, on June 26, 1965, he married Patricia Ferguson in Cooperstown.

For 15 years he worked as a salesman for Smith Ford. He then worked as a salesman for Harvey Sand and Gravel in Oneonta, retiring in 1999.

Since his retirement, he sold birdhouses and trellises.

He was a member of the VFW Hartwick Post 1206 and the American Legion of Hartwick Post 1567.

He had a strong love for the outdoors and nature. He loved to hunt and fish and was a bird dog trainer. He enjoyed working in his garden and had a large collection of tools.

His friends will remember his winning smile and humorous sense of humor. A family man he was happiest when surrounded by his grandchildren. Carm will always be remembered as a loving caring and helpful person and will be greatly missed by many, especially his loving family.

Surviving are his wife of 37 years, Patricia; one son, Edward and his wife, Rosally Pugliese of Manlius; a daughter, Lorie and her husband, David Lamb of Richfield Springs; five cherished granddaughters, Lauren and Jenna Pugliese of Manlius, Lindsey, Daeltun and Charlie Sue, all of Richfield Springs; one sister, Rose Bridger; two sisters-in-law, Paula and Pearl Pugliese, all of Cooperstown.

Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his four brothers, John, Leonard, Angelo and Vito Pugliese.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday at J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 W. James St., Richfield Springs. Military honors will be accorded at Schuyler Lake Cemetery, where he will be laid to rest.

The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday.

Memorial donations may be made to the Ruffed Grouse Society, 451 McCormick Road, Coraopolis, PA 15108 or the Richfield Springs Volunteer Fire Department. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Betty Brunton

SHERBURNE — Betty M. Brunton, 83, of Chapel Street in Sherburne, formerly of Norwich, passed away peacefully at the home of her daughter in Cooperstown, on Monday morning, Sept. 30, 2002, surrounded by her loving family.

Born in Utica on Aug. 20, 1919, Betty was the daughter of David and Pearle (Rowland) Hill.

On June 25, 1949, in McGraw, she married Stewart Brunton, who died Oct. 10, 1979.

Betty received her training as a licensed practical nurse in 1945, while serving in the WAC Medical Corps During her nursing career, she worked at Chenango Memorial Hospital, in the office of Dr. Lawrence Cumings and at Valley View Manor Nursing Home.

She and her husband operated a Family Care Home and she later became the first local coordinator of Quality Care in Chenango County.

Betty was a member of the Sherburne United Church of Christ, where she served on the Pastoral Relations Committee. She was an active participant in 60 plus as well as a member of the Friends of the Sherburne Library and the Retired Nurses of Chenango Memorial Hospital.

Betty volunteered at the Sherburne-Earlville Elementary School and was a member of the Older Americans Act Advisory Council and the Chenango Memorial Hospital Auxiliary.

Betty is survived by six children and their spouses, Judy and Howard Ryan of Cooperstown, Mary Lou and John Stewart of Norwich, Marjorie and William Craine of Sherburne, David and Deborah Brunton of Eureka,  Calif., Nancy Brunton of Florham Park, N.J., and Dr. William Brunton of Berlin, Germany. She is also survived by 14 grandchildren and their spouses, Michael and Sue Ryan, Charles and Bryn Ryan, Scott and Dawn Ryan, Martin and Julie Ryan, Julie and David Neumann, Gary and Sarah Stewart, John and Beth Stewart, Betsy and Bill Loomis, Lori Stewart, Katie, Abby and Billy Craine, Eric and Taunya Brunton, and Aaron and Joy Brunton; a brother and sister-in-law, Frank and Stephanie Marshall of Raleigh, N.C.; 23 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband, she was predeceased by a sister, Shirley Bartlett; and a nephew, Kevin Marshall.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 3, 2002, at the Sherburne United Church of Christ.

Friends are invited to call from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday at the Devine-Wilson Memorial Home in Norwich. And from 1 p.m. until the time of the service at the Sherburne United Church of Christ.

Donations in Betty's memory may be made to Hospice or the Sherburne United Church of Christ.

Mary V. Elderkin

HERKIMER — Mary V. Elderkin, 80, of 690 W. German St., formerly of U.S. Highway 20, town of Warren, passed away Sunday evening, Sept. 29, 2002, in Valley Health Services Inc.

She was born on Sept. 3, 1922, in Brooklyn, daughter of the late William and Rose Stanchik Sarafin. Mary was raised and educated in both Brooklyn and Spring Valley. She was a graduate of Spring Valley High School.

On Oct. 24, 1942, she married Lincoln G. Elderkin in Brooklyn. She and her husband came to Warren in October of 1974.

For 15 years she was employed by the General Electric Co. in Utica. She retired in 1974.

She was a member of Saint Joseph's Catholic Church, Richfield Springs.

Mrs. Elderkin will always be remembered as a loving, caring and hopeful person. She will be greatly missed by many, especially her family.

Surviving besides her husband of 59 years, Lincoln; are two sons, William Barry Elderkin of Frankfort, Germany, and Bruce and his wife, Mary Elderkin of New Hartford; one daughter, Mary Lou and her husband, Gary Smith of Warren; a sister, Sonja MacFarland of Taberg; six grandchildren, April Elderkin of Germany, Christina Lewis of Richfield Springs, Michelle Louis of Pensacola, Fla., Mark Elderkin of Fort Benning, Ga., Gregory Elderkin of Fort Wainwright, Alaska, and Brandon Elderkin of Richfield Springs; and one great-granddaughter, Regan Lewis.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 7, 2002, in Saint Joseph's Church, Richfield Springs, with the Rev. Terrence Healy officiating.

The family will be present from 4 to 6 p.m. on Sunday in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 W. James St., Richfield Springs to receive relatives and friends.

Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Mrs. Elderkin's family sincerely wish to express their appreciation to the entire staff of Valley Health Services Inc. for the wonderful compassionate care that was given to Mary over the past 11 years.

Fred Y. Mostert

DELHI — Fred Y. Mostert, 58, a Delhi native and former longtime resident, passed away peacefully on Monday morning, Sept. 30, 2002, at Obici Hospital, Suffolk, Va., following an extended illness.

The son of the late John and Ida F. (Turner) Mostert, he was born Dec. 30, 1943, in Delhi, where he grew up and was a member of the Class of 1962 at Delaware Academy, after which he enlisted in the U.S. Army (1963-1966), serving stateside and in the Canal Zone.

A trucker most of his life, Fred was employed by Matthews Brothers in Delhi and, subsequently, Breakstone Foods in Walton, moving to Clermont, Fla., in 1986, where he was also engaged in trucking until his health failed last year. He moved to Suffolk, Va., six weeks ago to reside with his daughter.

Fred possessed an amicable personality, and will be remembered by his family and many friends in Delhi and Florida, for his smile, laughter and sense of humor.

Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Kimberly and Michael Harris of Suffolk, Va., and Michele and Michael Gravel of Cortland; four grandchildren; two sisters, Sue Townsend and Mary Ann Mostert; and a brother, Peter Mostert, all of Delhi; and several nieces and nephews.

Friends are invited to call 4 to 6 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 3, when the family will be in attendance at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi, and where funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday by Mr. Eugene Vandenbord, chaplain of Donald W. Gleason, Post 190, American Legion, with military honors and burial following in the Woodland Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet & Son, Delhi.

Cynthia L. Pratt

FREEVILLE — Cynthia L. Maples Pratt, 56, of Gulf Hill Road, Freeville, went to be with her Lord Monday, Sept. 30, 2002. She passed away at her home after a brief illness with lung cancer.

"Cyndy" was born July 9, 1946, in Oneonta, a daughter of David and Louise Maples.

Cyndy attended the University of Connecticut in Danbury, and the New York School of Dog Grooming. She was the owner of Renaissance Dog Grooming in Dryden, and had operated many other grooming shops in the past. Cyndy owned and showed Clumber Spaniels and was known throughout a wide area for her work with dogs.

She was a former member and elder of the Rome Presbyterian Church and currently was member of the First Presbyterian Church of Dryden and sang in the church choir.

A loving person with many talents and abilities, Cyndy will be greatly missed by her family and many friends.

Survivors include her mother, Louise S. Maples, of Ithaca; her husband, William F. Pratt, of Freeville; her son, Walter Constantini of Rome; daughters, Julia Conde of Schenectady, and Mary Kubiniski of Bay Village, Ohio; her siblings, David Maples of Morgan Hill,  Calif., Susan Maples of Ann Arbor, Mich., Nancy Maples McGinnis of Houston,  Texas; seven stepchildren; five grandchildren; 10 stepgrandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 4, 2002, at the First Presbyterian Church of Dryden, with the Rev. David C. Robinson officiating.

Burial will be in Hartwick Cemetery, Hartwick.

Friends are invited to call from 6 to 9 p.m. on Thursday at the Perkins Funeral Home, 55 West Main St., Dryden.

Fred Y. Mostert

Harold G. Ennis

HARTWICK — Harold Gordon Ennis, 81, of Hartwick passed away on Wednesday morning, Oct. 2, 2002, at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

He was born on Sept. 25, 1921, in Liverpool, England.

Since his retirement, he has been a 16-year resident of Hartwick, where he resided with his wife of 23 years, Joan Marilyn Ennis.

During his lifetime, he served during World War II in the U.S. Army as a technical sergeant in the 856th Engineer Aviation Battalion from 1942 until 1946, in Luzon, New Guinea, and in the Southern Philippines. He received the Asiatic-Pacific Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, the Philippines Liberation Ribbon, the World War II Victory Medal and the American Service Medal.

He was employed by the Port Authority of New York-New Jersey as a technical electronic engineer, where he worked at Kennedy, LaGuardia and Newark airports and the World Trade Center.

He was very active in the local community serving on the town planning board for Hartwick, he received a plaque for his 10 years of dedicated service after recently resigning because of health reasons.

He was a longtime member of the Oneonta and Cooperstown Amateur Radio clubs. He also belonged to the Hartwick Rod and Gun Club.

He is survived by his wife, Joan Ennis of Hartwick; his daughter, Pamela Ennis of Columbus, Ohio; a stepson and his wife, Robert and Alison Kafarski of Walton; a sister, Dorothy Burns of Queens; and two nieces.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 4, 2002, at the Evangelical Lutheran Church on Route 28, Hartwick Seminary, with the Rev. Paul Messner officiating.

There will be a graveside memorial service at the Hartwick Seminary Cemetery following the church service.

A reception will be held at the church immediately after.

Memorial contributions can be made in the name of Harold Gordon Ennis to the Hartwick Fire Department or to the charity of one's choice.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.
