Beatrice Hotaling

FORT PLAIN — Mrs. Beatrice Mae Hotaling, 85, of Martin Street, Fort Plain, passed away early Wednesday morning, Oct. 2, 2002, at the St. Mary's Hospital, Amsterdam, after a short illness.

She was born on Feb. 10, 1917, the daughter of Emery Baxter and Ida Smith Baxter, in the town of Roseboom, Otsego County.

Mrs. Hotaling was educated at Cherry Valley schools.

Mrs. Hotaling was a devoted mother, wife and homemaker.

She had lived in Fort Plain since 1994; previous residence was Marshville, living there since 1956.

She attended Marshville Evangelical Church.

She enjoyed planting and caring for various kinds of houseplants.

She married Harry S. Hotaling Sr., on June 19, 1935, in Pleasant Brook. He predeceased her Dec. 23, 1989.

Mrs. Hotaling is survived by three daughters, Beverly Parslow of Marshville, and Marlene M. Blair and Crystal A. Barnes, both of Fort Plain; three sons, Harry S. Hotaling Jr., Dannie G. Hotaling, and David M. Hotaling, all of Fort Plain; 21 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 5, 2002, at the Chapel of Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, Inc., 20 Otsego St., Canajoharie, with the Rev. Carl Hawver, officiating.

Place of burial will be in South Valley-Pleasant Brook Cemetery.

Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 4, 2002, at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Mid County Volunteer Ambulance Service, P.O. Box 126, Canajoharie, NY 13317.

Betty E. Mullinnex

HARLETON,  Texas — Betty Ellen Mullinnex, 89, of Harleton,  Texas, passed away Sept. 17, 2002, at the Good Shepherd Hospital, Longview,  Texas, after a long illness.

She was born March 2, 1913, to Cora and Russell Schaffer in Gilboa, N.Y.

She was married to Rozland Mullinnex on Nov. 13, 1971.

Survivors are her husband, Rozland; and two daughters, Betty June McHenry, Harleton,  Texas, and Mary Ellen Chamberlin, Sherburne, N.Y.; three stepsons, Stephen Mullinnex, Ore City,  Texas, James Mullinnex, Meredith, N.Y., and Craig Mullinnex, Homested,  Texas; one brother and sister-in-law, Jerry and Genevive Schaffer, Rome, N.Y.; numerous grandchildren; great-grandchildren; great-great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by three brothers, Raymond, Michael and Harold Schaffer.

Memorial services will be held at the Methodist Church, Frankfort, N.Y., at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 6, 2002.

Funeral services were held in  Texas.

Fred Britt

WALTON — A memorial service for Fred Britt, who passed away on Dec. 12, 2001, will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 5, 2002, at the Christ Episcopal Church, Gardner Place, Walton.

Hilda P. Tamas

ONEONTA — Hilda Perkins Tamas, 88, of Oneonta passed away early Oct. 3, 2002, with comfort care at the Oneonta Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

She was born on July 19, 1914, in the township of West Burlington, Otsego County. She was the daughter of Grover and Agatha Telfer Perkins.

She married Joseph Tamas on Sept. 5, 1970, at the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption in Fairfield, Conn.

Mrs. Tamas (Perk) grew up in Otsego County, attending Hartwick and Morris schools.

She worked at the Knox School in Cooperstown.

Then she moved to Bridgeport, Conn., where she lived for 40 years. She was employed at the Bridgeport Brass Co. and later in the office of the Baird Machine Co.

She and her husband returned to the area in 1982.

Mrs. Tamas was a loyal member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and the St. Mary's Rosary Society until illness prevented her from attending.

She had been a resident of the Oneonta Nursing and Rehabilitation Center since June 2000.

She always enjoyed being with relatives, friends and neighbors.

Mrs. Tamas was predeceased by her husband, Joseph in April 1987.

She is survived by two sisters and their husbands, Thelma and Kenneth T. Lally of Schenectady and Diana and Howard Marlette of Mount Vision; three nieces and their husbands, Cheryl and Arne Christensen of LaGrangeville, Mary and James R. Crouthamel of Sussex, N.J., and Jeanne and Richard Stalker of Clinton Corners; six great-nieces and nephews; and cousins, John A. Telfer of Selkirk and Mary Godfrey of North Syracuse.

Calling hours will be held on Monday at the funeral home from 12:30 to 2 p.m., at which time the family will be present.

Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 7, 2002, at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. John Rosson, pastor of St. Mary Catholic Church, Cooperstown, officiating.

Burial will follow at the Hartwick Cemetery, Hartwick.

Mrs. Tamas' family sincerely wishes to express its appreciation to the entire staff of the Oneonta Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for the wonderful compassionate care that they gave to Hilda.

Memorial donations may be sent to the Activity Program at the ONRC, 330 Chestnut St., Oneonta, NY 13820 in loving memory of Hilda Perkins Tamas.

Funeral arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Betty E. Mullinnex

HARLETON,  Texas — Betty Ellen Mullinnex, 89, of Harleton,  Texas, passed away Sept. 17, 2002, at the Good Shepherd Hospital, Longview,  Texas, after a long illness.

She was born March 2, 1913, to Cora and Russell Schaffer in Gilboa, N.Y.

She was married to Rozland Mullinnex on Nov. 13, 1971.

Funeral services were held in  Texas.

Anne C. Furrer

HAMDEN — Anne C. Furrer, 75, of Gregory Hollow, Hamden, passed away Wednesday evening, Oct. 2, 2002, at the home of her daughter, Katherine.

She was born on Nov. 9, 1926, in Brooklyn, the daughter of John and Catherine (Strahle) Billing.

She married William C. Furrer on March 19, 1948, in Brooklyn. He predeceased her in August 1993.

Anne lived with her husband and two children, Katherine and Albert in Queens. Where she and her husband, William, ran a small restaurant and enjoyed visiting their second home at Gregory Hollow, they moved to Hamden in 1966 and resided there for 36 years.

She worked in the nursing field at Delaware County Infirmary in Delhi. After retiring from there she worked for Buchanan Transportation as a bus aide for handicapped children.

Anne had a great love for life and family and always brought happiness and laughter to those who knew her. She will be deeply missed.

She is survived by two children, Katherine E. Hood and Albert J. Furrer of Walton; four grandchildren, Mathew Hood and Dain Hood of Downsville, Kimberly Hood of Sidney and Marlo Furrer of Alabama; and three great-grandchildren, Zachary and Shikaria Hood and Camden McKowan.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 6, 2002, at the Knorr Funeral Home, Downsville, with the Rev. Fr. James M. Clarke of the St. Mary's Episcopal Church, Downsville, officiating.

Interment will be in the Hamden Cemetery.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 on Saturday evening, Oct. 5, 2002, at the Knorr Funeral Home, the family will be in attendance.

Gifts in her memory may be sent to Catskill Area Hospice, 20 Elm St., Delhi.

Raymond Grotevant

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — Raymond Henry Grotevant, 81, died Sept. 30, 2002, at his home in Williamsburg, Va.

He was the son of Henry and Blanch Grotevant.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth B. Grotevant, and three daughters, Debra Grotevant, Alicia Grotevant and Ellen Faye Grotevant.

He is survived by sons, Alan Grotevant of Williamsburg and Lee Grotevant, of Wilmington, Ohio; a daughter, Nancy Grotevant of Nineveh, N.Y.; sisters, Dick and Julia Welch and Burnice Scott of Port Clinton, Ohio, Lynn and Betrice Bennett of Walton, N.Y., and Albert and Marion Barber of Walton N.Y.; an aunt, Ruth Tweedie of Walton, N.Y.; a brother-in-law, Leo Pierce of Walton, N.Y.; a sister-in-law, Wanda Grotevant of Walton, N.Y.

He served in the U.S. Army in World War II.

Mr. Grotevant was retired from the Kraft Co.

A service of remembrance will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 4, 2002, in the Smith Memorial Baptist Church, with the Rev. Dr. Ron Wade officiating.

Interment will be held at 1 p.m. in Walton Cemetery, Walton, N.Y., on Monday, Oct. 7.

The family will receive friends from 7 until 8:30 p.m. Thursday evening, Oct. 3, 2002, at the Bucktrout of Williamsburg Funeral Home.

Bucktrout of Williamsburg is in charge of arrangements.

Dorothy K. Rose

NEWTOWN SQUARE, Pa. — Dorothy Keefe Rose, 91, a 12-year resident of Newtown Square, Pa., formerly of the Oneonta area, died Sunday, Sept. 29, 2002, at  White Horse Village, a retirement facility in Edgemont, Pa.

She was born in Norwood, N.Y., on March 24, 1911, to James B. and Iva (Merridew) Keefe.

A graduate of Norwood Norfolk High School and the Pottstown Crane School of Music, Dorothy was a substitute teacher in various school districts. She worked with the low-vision group at  White House Village and also with various church choirs.

She was a member of the Middletown Presbyterian Church in Elwyn, Pa., and former member of the First Methodist Church in Corinth, N.Y.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, John and Janice Rose of New Jersey; sister, Sally Shanfelter of Florida; grandchildren, Julie R. Heck and Jason M. Rose of New Jersey; and four nieces and two nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents, and husband of 41 years who died in 1978.

A memorial service will be held at  White House Village auditorium in Newtown Square, Pa., on Saturday, Oct. 5, at 1 p.m.

Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 625 West Ridge Pike, A-100 Conshohocken, PA 19428-1190 or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 539 Lane Ave., Memphis, TN 39105.

Funeral arrangements were handled by the Frank C. Videon Funeral Home, Broomall, Pa.

Albert F. Almstedt

GRAND JUNCTION,  Colo. — The Rev. Albert Frederick Almstedt of Grand Junction,  Colo., passed away on Monday, Sept. 16, 2002, at St. Mary's Hospital.

He was born Jan. 27, 1911, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to John Olaf and Emilie Pauline (Rakop) Almstedt. The family moved to South New Berlin, N.Y., where Albert graduated from high school and worked on the family farm.

He then attended Hartwick College in Oneonta, N.Y., and graduated from Albany State Teachers College.

Albert married Margaret Cole of Sauquoit, N.Y., on Aug. 29, 1942, and they bought a dairy farm in Sherburne, N.Y.

Albert decided to enter the Methodist ministry in 1955. He attended Drew University in Madison, N.J., while ministering in Damascus, Galilee, Abrahamsville and Caulkins, Pa.

After graduation from Drew University in 1959, his next charge was in Lake Ariel and Hamlin, Pa.; followed by Cooperstown, N.Y., and Fly Creek, N.Y.; and ending in Apalachin, N.Y., and Little Meadows, Pa.

Albert and Margaret retired in Apalachin in 1987, and then moved to Grand Junction,  Colo., in 1990.

Albert was preceded in death by their daughter, Carol Elin Klepey; his parents and brothers, Carl and Ivar.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Margaret, of Grand Junction; daughter and son-in-law, Linda Marie and Terry Edwards, of Grand Junction; granddaughters, Melissa Susan (Mike) Marshall of Federal Way, Wash., Mary Katherine Gibbs of Phoenix, Ariz., Julie Ann (Vic) Janda of Forks, Wash., and Jessica Marie Edwards of Boulder,  Colo.; great-grandchildren, Lucas and Christina Marshall, and Jessica Carol and Christen Janda; and son-in-law, Terry Klepey of Forks, Wash.

Richard Robinson

WALTON — Richard Allen Robinson Sr., 53, of Walton, died Thursday, Oct. 3, 2002, at Albany Veterans Hospital.

He was born Aug. 22, 1949, in Sidney, to John and Elva Utter Robinson.

Richard married Mary Ann Rossman on April 14, 1971, in Halcottsville.

A veteran of the United States Marines, he served from April 14, 1970, to June 7, 1972.

He was a 1974 graduate of the State University College of Technology at Delhi and a 1977 graduate of the Riverside School of Aeronautics. He completed a four-year apprenticeship at Catskill Airways in Oneonta in 1979.

He was a radio telephone operator and completed a course on aircraft ignition through Bendix Electrical Corp. Division.

Mr. Robinson was a member of the Marine Corps League, Disabled American Veterans and the American Legion Post of Trout Creek.

Besides his wife, Mary Ann Robinson, of Walton, he is survived by a son, Richard A. Robinson Jr. and daughter-in-law, Jody, of St. Cloud, Fla.; daughter, Angel H. Robinson, of Durham, N.C.; three grandsons, Austin Robinson, Gaelen and Connor Vaughn; five sisters, Ellie Yonkers of Unadilla, Elaine Rossman of Delhi, Dorothy Boning of Franklin, Denise Beaney of Leesburg, Fla., Norma Joslin of Unadilla; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held later.

Arrangements were entrusted to Hynes Funeral Home of Margaretville.

Roger Leroy VanValkenburg

HOBART — Roger Leroy VanValkenburg, 73, of Hobart, died Sunday, Oct. 6, 2002, at home following a courageous fight against cancer.

He was born Dec. 27, 1928, in Grapeville, the son of the Rev. Floyd and Eloise (Croft) VanValkenburg.

He married Marjorie (Berriker) VanValkenburg on Nov. 26, 1949, in Douglassville, Pa. They were married nearly 53 years.

Early in their marriage, Roger farmed for seven years in Douglassville, Pa. He owned a farm in West Harpersfield for 20 years and was able to continue farming for 13 of these years as an amputee after a farm accident.

He worked at Deer Run Ski Center and Deer Run Village as a lift operator and maintenance man for over 12 years.

He was a New York state-certified water systems operator for many years.

Roger was employed by Downsville Bank as a bank courier for several years and in the last few years was employed by the Hearthstone Retirement Community as a maintenance man.

While farming he was a member of the Eastern Canton Brown Swiss Breeders Association. He was a 4-H leader for the South Kortright Calf Club and was a member of Delaware County Cooperative Extension.

A very active member of the Hobart United Methodist Church, he served on the Board of Trustees and on the Council. He was chairman of the men's club, sang in the church choir and was a member of PPR and Promise Keepers.

Roger was a charter member and treasurer of Hobart Civic Association and was instrumental in developing the flowerbeds and park on the corner of Maple Avenue and Main Street and was a member of the Hobart Village Planning Board.

He is survived by his wife, Marjorie, at home; daughter, Connie VanValkenburg of Selkirk and her son and his fiance, Robert VanValkenburg and Kim Davis of Mechanicville; daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Michael Jacobs and their children, Lauren and Peter, Stamford; daughter and son-in-law, Mary Beth and Robert Joel, and their children, Allison, William and Michael Joel, Albany; daughter and son-in-law, Patricia VanValkenburg and Gary Krueger and their children, Collin and Alaina Krueger, Selkirk; and son and daughter-in-law, Roger and Kristen VanValkenburg, and their children, Kaitlin, Aiden and Garrin VanValkenburg, Dundee.

A sister, Grace and Frank Johnson, Richmond, Va.; and brothers, Vincent VanValkenburg, Jacksonville, Fla., and Wayne and Edie VanValkenburg, Pilsgrove, N.J.; and many nieces and nephews also survive.

Roger was a loving and strong husband, father and grandfather and faithful friend. He was always available for his children and grandchildren. He will be greatly missed by family and friends.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2002, at the Hobart United Methodist Church in Hobart, with the Rev. Richard Elder and the Rev. Bert More officiating.

Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2002, at the MacArthur Funeral Home in Hobart.

Burial will be at Locust Hill Cemetery in Hobart.

Contributions in his memory may be made to the Hobart Playground Fund, 13075 County Highway 18, Hobart, NY 13788 or Catskill Area Hospice, 20 Elm St., Delhi, NY 13753.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.
