Julia Snedeker

LITTLE FALLS — Julia Snedeker, 89, of Little Falls, passed away Saturday, Oct. 5, 2002, in the Heritage House Nursing Center in Troy.

She was born on Oct. 4, 1913, in Watervliet, the daughter of the late John and Anna Swota.

In 1944, she married John Snedeker in St. Joseph's Church in Richfield Springs. He died in 1996.

Survivors include one sister, Mary Swota of Watervliet; two brothers and their wives, Joseph and Eileen Swota of Troy, and Steve and Olga Swota of Richfield Springs; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service and interment will be private and held at the convenience of the family.

Funeral arrangements are with J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, Richfield Springs.

Gordon Thompson

SIDNEY — Gordon G. Thompson, 86, of Sidney, went to be with his Lord on Saturday, Oct. 5, 2002, at the Skilled Nursing Facility in Sidney.

He was born Oct. 7, 1915, son of the late Albert and Mabel Farrington Thompson in Oneonta.

Gordon graduated from Oneonta High School in 1934, and then attended Hartwick College and graduated with a bachelor of science degree in 1938.

He married Evelyn Michaels on Nov. 17, 1940, in Oneonta. She predeceased him on Sept. 16, 1982.

Mr. Thompson was employed as an administrator of engineering for E.C.D. of Bendix when he retired. Gordon was a member of the Engineers Club at Bendix.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Sidney, the Sidney Lodge No. 801 F&AM, and a former member of the Loyal Order of the Moose No. 277 in Sidney.

He is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, David C. and Carol Thompson of Hilton Head, S.C., Loren G. and Lori Thompson of Penn Yan, and Jack E. and Lori Thompson of Hilton Head, S.C.; daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Ezra Keenly of Sunrise, Fla.; 13 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren, good friend and caretaker, Debra  Taylor of Sidney.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2002, at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. today, Oct. 7, 2002.

Burial will be in Oneonta Plains Cemetery in Oneonta.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Sidney Emergency Squad.

Earl F. Wright

GUILFORD — Earl Frederick Wright, 74, of North Pond Road, Guilford, passed away Friday afternoon, Oct. 4, 2002, at his home.

Born and raised in Plymouth, Earl grew up on the family farm and attended school in both Plymouth and Norwich. Following his graduation from Norwich High School, Earl decided to attend Syracuse University, where he earned his electrical engineering degree.

He then entered the U.S. Navy, serving his country from 1946-1951.

Earl returned home and worked for a brief period of time for General Electric in Syracuse, and subsequently worked for Capital T.V. in Norwich. In 1952, he gained employment with Scintilla of Sidney and their successors, Bendix and Allied. His career spanned from 1952 until his retirement in 1985.

Over the years with the company, he worked on many military contracts as an electrical engineer. In addition to working in Sidney, Earl also ran the family farm on the North Pond Road, where he and his family made their home since 1966.

A man who loved the outdoors, Earl enjoyed his hunting and fishing, and working on the family farm. He could often be found helping his friends and neighbors, working on his own car repairs, or just tinkering around.

Born June 17, 1928, in Plymouth, Earl was the son of George T. and Elva (Burtus) Wright Jr.

On June 30, 1951, in Norwich, he married Mary Louise Edwards Wright, who passed away in May 1996.

Earl is survived by his children and their families, Florence (Flo) Lent and husband, David, of Bedford, N.H., Judy Gorski and husband, Jack, of Rensselaer, Fred Wright of Safety Harbor, Fla., Lisa Cole of South New Berlin, Debbie Frauenhofer and husband, David, of Buffalo, Kim Wright of Guilford and William (Bill) Wright and wife, Angelina, of Walden. He is survived by his grandchildren, Nicole and Brian Lent, Melissa and Elizabeth Powers, Jennifer Lynn, Jessica Marie, and Christie Ann Wright, Todd Cole, Scott, Matthew, and Eric Frauenhofer, Nathan Wright, and Yancy Wright; and six great-grandchildren. Also surviving are his sisters, Mary Schermerhorn of Raleigh, N.C., Beatrice George of Norwich, and Mildred  Jones of Smyrna; his brothers, Ed Wright of Gilbertsville and Jim Wright of Norwich; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Besides his wife, Mary Louise; Earl was predeceased by his grandson, Jason Wright; his sisters, Dorothy Townsend and Minnie Tefft; and his brother, Richard Wright.

Funeral services for Earl will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2002, from the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home, with the Rev. Rebekah Sweet, pastor of the Broad Street United Methodist Church of Norwich, officiating.

Interment with full military rites will follow in the Mount Hope Cemetery of Norwich.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. at the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home on Tuesday evening, Oct. 8, 2002.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Chenango County, 21 Hayes St., Norwich, NY 13815.

Mildred M. Dixson

ATHENS, Pa. — Mildred M. Dixson, 95, went home to be with the Lord Saturday, Oct. 5, 2002.

She was born May 21, 1907, in Albany, N.Y., the daughter of James and Marian Ferguson Mead.

Mildred lived most of her life in Morris, N.Y. She worked for many years at Morris Central School as a cashier/cook in the cafeteria.

She will be remembered by her gift of hospitality to family, friends and traveling missionaries. She was a member of the Morris Baptist Church and taught Sunday school for more than 40 years in the primary department. She loved the Lord, and her home and heart were always open to those in need for a listening ear or transportation to the doctors. She gave her life ministering to family and friends whether for physical, spiritual or emotional needs.

Mildred was predeceased by her husband and father of her children, F. Earl Dixson; and her daughter, Catherine A. Beardsley.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Jeanne B. and Kenneth N. Cooke of Bentley Creek, Pa.; grandchildren, Daniel and Joyce L. Cooke of Bentley Creek, Pa., Aimee and Phillip Comfort of Bath, N.Y., Nathan B. and Terri L. Cooke of Lancaster, Pa.; great-grandchildren, Jessica, Peter, Ariel and Victoria; one nephew, Robert Dyckman Jr.

Family and friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2002, at the Lowery Funeral Home, 225 South Main St., Athens, Pa.

Funeral services will follow at the funeral home at 8 p.m. with the Rev. Eric Ferguson, pastor of the Bentley Creek Wesleyan Church, officiating and the Rev. John McConnell of the Southside Alliance Church of Elmira, N.Y., co-officiating.

Burial will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 9 2002, in the Hillington Cemetery, Morris, N.Y.

Memorial donations may be made in her name to the First Baptist Church, 31 S. Broad St., Morris, NY 13808.

George G. Potter

SCHENEVUS — George G. Potter, 81, of Schenevus, passed away Sunday, Oct. 6, 2002, at Binghamton General Hospital.

Potter was born on Feb. 20, 1921, in Mount Vision, to Jay and Bessie Cronkite Potter.

He was in the Army Air Corp during World War II and served overseas in North Africa and Europe.

Potter was married to Virginia Adee on Oct. 19, 1948, in Mount Vision, and worked as a maintenance man for Hartwick College for many years.

Potter enjoyed working in his garden and helping friends mow their lawns. He also enjoyed socializing with family and friends.

He was predeceased by his parents, and on April 12, 1993, his wife, Virginia.

He is survived by his daughter, Dianne L. Potter of Goodyear Lake; son, Larry and wife, Bonnie, Potter of Unadilla; daughters, Debbie and husband, Sid, Hanson of North Carolina, and Marcia and husband, Dick, Turcotte of Johnstown; a sister, Minnie McClean of Edmeston; brother-in-law, Phillip and wife, Linda, Adee of Worcester; sisters-in-law, Anna and husband, Lloyd, Tilley of Mount Vision, and Elizabeth Rowland of North Carolina; grandchildren, Katrina Potter, Melissa Potter, Trevor Turcotte and Donnie Hanson; and many nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2002, at the Bookhout Funeral Home, during which time the family will be present.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2002, at Bookhout Funeral Home, with the Rev. Frank MacCracken officiating. Burial will follow in Schenevus Cemetery.

Ronald Hellman

ONEONTA — Ronald Hellman, 60, of Oneonta, passed away Friday, Oct. 4, 2002, at the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown, after a brief illness.

He was born April 6, 1942, the son of Charles and Pearl (Stevenson) Hellman.

He was in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.

He was a former police officer with the Youngstown, Ohio, Police Department, having retired several years ago.

He had been a resident of Oneonta and previously resided in California and Youngstown, Ohio.

He is survived by two sons, Ronald and Charles Hellman, of Youngstown; and a cousin, Pearl Kodis of Struthers, Ohio.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. today, Oct. 7, 2002.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2002, at the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.

Burial will be in Tod Cemetery, Youngstown, Ohio.

Arrangements are by the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, Oneonta, N.Y.

Francis E. Kenney

BOWERSTOWN — Mr. Francis E. Kenney, 80, of Bowerstown, died Friday, Oct. 4, 2002, at Bassett Healthcare.

A funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2002, at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Cooperstown, with Fr. John Rosson, pastor of St. Mary's Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Cooperstown, officiating.

Burial will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery in Index.

Calling hours will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2002, at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Cooperstown, when the family will be in attendance.

The family has requested that they would appreciate that no one send flowers.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Danice I. King

FORT EDWARD — Danice I. King, 64, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2002, at Glens Falls Hospital.

Born on Oct. 19, 1937, in Reber, she was the daughter of Harry Daily and Irene (Strong) Daily. She was raised by her grandmother, Belle Strong.

Danice was a professional seamstress and an avid outdoor sportsman.

She will be greatly missed by all of her family and friends and she will always be remembered for the unlimited kindness and generosity that she extended to all.

She was the beloved and devoted wife, best friend, and soul mate of 45 years of marriage, to James J. King.

She was cherished by her children, grandchildren and other family members.

Survivors include her husband, James King, of Fort Edward; three daughters, Yvonne Benjamin and her husband, Gary of Brooksville, Fla., Lisa Kathmann and her husband, Robert of Delhi, and Penny Barber of Delhi; her son, Jeff King and his wife, Andrea of Delhi; two granddaughters, Cotee Benjamin and Cassana Monje; four grandsons, Elisha Benjamin, Chase Barber, James King and Carson Barber; her brother, Carlton Daily and his wife, Doris of Schenectady; stepmother, Virginia Daily of Clearwater, Fla.; stepbrothers, Harry Jr. Daily and Patrick Daily; and Patricia Ann Daily and Diane Daily; and several great-aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family.

Those who wish may send a remembrance in her name to Moreau Emergency Squad, 1583 Route 9, Fort Edward, NY 12828.

Marion G. Zuretti

WORCESTER, Mass. — Marion G. Zuretti left this world a better place when she died Saturday, Oct. 5, 2002, at UMass Memorial Hospital, Worcester, Mass.

She was born Sept. 21, 1917, the daughter of Carl C. and May (Spokesfield) Sprague.

She spent most of her life in Westboro, Mass., where she graduated from high school in 1935.

She became a registered nurse in 1938, and later received her bachelor's (1967) and master's (1970) in nursing from Boston University where she was inducted into Sigma Theta Tau. She worked as both a private duty and industrial nurse before becoming a nursing instructor in 1967.

She served as the director of the Westboro State Hospital Nursing School before becoming the director of health occupations at Assabet Valley Regional Technical School, Marlborough, Mass., in 1972.

Her professional memberships included the American and Massachusetts. Nurses Assocationsand Leagues of Nursing. She retired to the Oneonta area in 1982.

Her community involvement included a 75-year service to Girl Scouts of America as a leader locally, regionally and internationally. She was awarded their highest award, the Thanks Badge, in 1988. She was actively involved with the Worcester County (Mass.) 4-H Horse Program and served as a leader, camp director and horse show judge. She was also the chair of the Massachusetts Farm Bureau Women's committee for five years.

She was a 51-year member of the American Philatelic Society and she enjoyed her weekly trips to Austin's Auction in search of stamps for her collection.

She is survived by a son, David L. Zuretti, of Wellesley, Mass.; and three daughters, Madelyn T. Good of Seabrook, N.H., Janet Nicalek and her husband, Ken, of Northboro, Mass., and Penny Wightman and her husband, Dave, of Maryland, N.Y. Also surviving are her brother, Carl W. Sprague and his wife, Onnie, of Woodstock, Va.; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Calling hours are from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2002, at the Britton-Summers Funeral Home, 4 Church St., Westboro, MA 01581.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2002, at St. Luke's Church, West Main Street, Westboro, Mass.

Burial will take place in the Sprague family plot, Weston Cemetery, Weston, Vt.

The family requests no flowers.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to her family care of P. Wightman, 6363 State Highway 7, Maryland, NY 12116. Donations may be made in her memory to AVRTS, 215 Fitchburg St., Marlboro, MA 01752 or your local Girl Scout troop or 4-H club.

Harold G. Dyer

MILFORD — Mr. Harold G. Dyer, 80, of Milford and formerly of Linden Avenue in Cooperstown, died Sunday, Oct. 6, 2002, at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

He was born on Sept. 29, 1922, in Oneonta, one of nine children of George R. and Annabell (Carins) Dyer.

He married Eleanor Watkins on Feb. 18, 1951, in Edgerton, Wyo. Mrs. Dyer died on Dec. 9, 1984.

Raised in Stamford, Harold graduated from Stamford Central School and worked on his family's farm until he was in his 20s. He then decided to seek his fortune in the West. For many years he was employed as a "roughneck" on the derricks of various crude oil well drilling operations in the states of Wyoming, North and South Dakota and Montana.

It was while he was working in the oil fields of Wyoming that he met his future wife, who had left her homeland of England to seek her fortune here in the United States. Upon returning to this area with his family in 1963, he was employed as a farmhand, first at the Ted Beck Farm in Milford and then at the Fred Reese Farm in Goshen, before returning to well drilling. He became a water well driller working in Marlboro and Poughkeepsie before moving to Bainbridge where he was employed by the Borden Plastic Factory.

After moving to Cooperstown, he was employed, for the next 20 years, in the housekeeping department at Bassett Hospital. Following his retirement from there he was a nurse's aide at The Meadows for several years.

Harold was a lifelong member of the Church of Christ. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, as well as reading and woodworking.

Harold is survived by his three children, Patricia and her husband, Eric Booth of Gambrills, Md., Roland and his wife, Wilma Dyer of Cooperstown, and Jacqueline and her husband, Paul Doxtader of Oneida; nine grandchildren, Greg, Miranda, Samantha and Eric Jr. Booth, Laura Grup, Randy and Scott Higgins, and Jocelyn and Sara Doxtader; eight great-grandchildren, Delilah Booth, April and Eliza Higgins, Kirsten and Kyle Grup and Nicole, Scott Jr. and Jacob Higgins; one brother, Robert Dyer of Unadilla; three sisters, Lillian Musson of Gilbertsville, Elizabeth Carr of Woodstock, Virginia and Lucille Campbell of Unadilla; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by two children, Stewart L. Dyer and Bettina K. Dyer; two brothers, William J. Dyer and Glenford A. Dyer; and two sisters, Ruth A. Dyer and Jean VanWarner.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. at the Church of Christ, Linden Avenue, Cooperstown, on Saturday, Oct. 12, 2002, with James Bell, minister, officiating.

Burial will be in Locust Hill Cemetery, Hobart.

There will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy, in the form of memorial gifts may be made to Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820 or Church of Christ, Linden Avenue, Cooperstown, NY 13326.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow and Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.
