Carl Hubbard Jr.

MARYLAND — Carl E. Hubbard Jr., 84, passed away peacefully Monday, Oct. 14, 2002, at the Ross Home in Maryland.

He was born June 19, 1918, on the family farm in Maryland, the son of Carl E. Sr. and Eva Belle (Hopkins) Hubbard.

Carl worked the family farm his whole life.

He is survived by a sister, Louise; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his sisters, Alice, Ida, Maribe and Belle; and a brother, William.

A graveside service will be held 2 p.m., Friday, Oct. 18, 2002, with the Rev. Susan Strang, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church in Worcester, officiating. Carl will be laid to rest next to his parents at the Hubbard Hill Cemetery on Hubbard Hill Road in the town Maryland.

Funeral arrangements are be Heller Funeral Home, 25 Arch St., Schenevus.

Frank H. Patten

ONEONTA — Mr. Frank H. Patten, 74, of Oneonta, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2002, after a lengthy illness at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

He was born May 19, 1928, in Oneonta, the son of Martin and Agnes (Hanes) Patten.

He married Virginia Lorraine Easley on Aug. 16, 1953, in Oneonta.

Mr. Patten served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II as a rifle instructor at Parris Island and was highly decorated during the Korean War, where he was wounded on two separate occasions.

After returning to Oneonta, following the Korean War, he founded the Southside Gulf Station at the foot of Franklin Mountain and also owned and operated Mountain Oil Co. In more recent years, he owned and operated Robo Car Wash, B&P Pump and Tank and also Patten Excavating, all in the Oneonta area.

He was a lifelong area resident and a longtime member of the First Presbyterian Church, a member of the VFW and treasurer of the local chapter of the Disabled American Veterans Association.

He particularly enjoyed hunting and fishing, and being with his grandchildren.

Mr. Patten is survived by his wife of 49 years, Lorraine; two sons, Wayne P. Patten and Frank H. Patten Jr., both of Oneonta; three daughters, Mrs. John (Rita) O'Brien of Brandon, Fla., Darlene Patten and Mrs. Ronald (Dorene) Losie, both of Oneonta; seven grandchildren, Daniel Byam, Danny O'Brien, Sean O'Brien and Meghan O'Brien, all of Brandon, Fla., and Cory Losie, Morgan Losie and Cala Losie of Oneonta; one brother, Martin R. Patton and his wife, Gina, of Oneonta; two sisters, Agnes DeShaw of Sidney and Dora Colby of Chenango Bridge; dear friends, Dr. Anthony Cammilleri and Floyd Byam; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his sister, Flora Patten.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 18, 2002, at the First Presbyterian Church, 296 Main St., with the Rev. Edward Carlson, pastor, officiating. The family will be receiving friends at the church immediately following the funeral service.

Those who wish may make contributions to either the Disabled American Veterans Association, 279 Chestnut St., or the First Presbyterian Church, 296 Main St., Oneonta NY 13820.

Arrangements are by the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.

Frank M. Grasso

COBLESKILL — Frank M. Grasso, 81, of Barnerville Road, died Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2002, at Samuel Stratton Veterans' Administration Medical Center in Albany.

Mr. Grasso was born on Nov. 2, 1920, in Italy, the son of Frank M. and Julia (Melita) Grasso.

Mr. Grasso retired from Lancaster Development of Cobleskill where he was a general superintendent. Prior to that, he had been employed at Callanan Road Improvement in South Bethlehem and several other construction companies.

He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving from 1944 to 1945, and received the Asiatic-Pacific Service Medal, Bronze Star Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Philippines Liberation Ribbon and World War II Victory Medal.

Mr. Grasso was a member of the American Legion Fred L. Stilson Post No. 57 of Cobleskill.

Mr. Grasso also was a member of the Schoharie County Numismatic Club. He served as a former fire chief for the Charlotteville Volunteer Fire Department for many years.

Mr. Grasso assisted in repairing instruments for the orchestra of the Cobleskill school district.

He was a member of the Barnerville United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Alvana (Rifenback) Grasso, whom he married Jan. 4, 1942, in Charlotteville; two daughters, Ella Sager and her husband, Ken, of Rogersville, Tenn., and Theresa Grasso of Watervliet; two sisters, Maria Dauley of Cobleskill, and Julia Zeh and her husband, Marvin, of East Worcester; nine grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 18, 2002, at the Barnerville Methodist Church, with the Rev. Michael Terrell officiating. Burial will be in Summit Cemetery.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, at the Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, where a prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. by the American Legion Fred L. Stilson Post No. 57.

If desired, memorial contributions may be made to the Cobleskill-Richmondville Central School Orchestra, 1353 State Route 7, Richmondville, NY 12149.

Edward J. Monroe

BINGHAMTON — Edward J. Monroe, 91, of Binghamton, formerly of Schuyler Lake, died Tuesday evening, Oct. 15, 2002, at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital.

He was predeceased by his wife of 58 years, Rose Monroe; and an infant son, Edward Monroe.

He is survived by his nieces, Laura Bishop, Barker, Ada Tow, North Carolina, Mary Miklinevich, Binghamton, Kay and Tim Driscoll, Endwell; a nephew, Walter and June Deyo, Derry, N.H.; sister-in-law, Regina Deyo, Binghamton.

He was a member of St. John the Evangelist Church, Binghamton, and retired from Plumbers and Pipefitters Local Union No. 112.

He was an accomplished writer and photographer and taught mechanics and was a writer for car and driver magazine.

Funeral services will be held at the J.A. McCormack Sons Funeral Home, 141 Main St., Binghamton, at 9 a.m. and at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 18, 2002, at St. John the Evangelist Church, where a Funeral Mass will be offered.

Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery,  Johnson City.

The family will receive friends at the McCormack Funeral Home from 4 to 6 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 17, 2002.

Clifford J. Craven

SAN ANTONIO — Clifford J. Craven, 82, former president of the State University College at Oneonta, passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2002, in San Antonio,  Texas.

He was born on Jan. 4, 1920, in Huntington, Mass., the son of John Craven and Marjory Perkins Craven.

He married Marion McCarthy of Syracuse, N.Y., on Jan. 8, 1943, in Spokane, Wash. Mrs. Craven passed away on Sept. 13, 2001, in San Antonio,  Texas.

During World War II, he was stationed in England and served as a highly decorated bombardier with the 457th B-17 Bomber Group of the U.S. 8th Army Air Corps. Following the war, he served in the U.S. Air Force Reserve for 30 years and retired with the rank of colonel.

Clifford Craven held a bachelor's degree in political science from Syracuse University, a master's in guidance from Columbia University and a doctorate in education from Syracuse. He also received a doctor of laws degree from Seinan Gakuin University in Japan in recognition of his service to international education.

Dr. Craven served for six years as Assistant Dean of Men at Syracuse University before joining SUCO as dean of students in 1952. In 1956, he accepted a similar position at the University of  Oklahoma, before returning to Oneonta as dean of the college in 1964.

In 1966, he was appointed vice president for academic affairs, and in 1970, became acting president upon the retirement of Dr. Royal F. Netzer. He was confirmed as the fifth president of SUCO in 1971.

Dr. Craven's presidency was noteworthy for the creation of many of the College's international programs, the establishment of the College at Oneonta Foundation and the expansion of academic offerings. He retired from SUCO in 1987.

The college commemorated his service by establishing the Clifford J. Craven International Student Scholarships and by dedicating the Craven Lounge in the Morris Conference Center in his honor.

Dr. Craven will be greatly missed by his loving family and many dear friends.

Dr. Clifford Craven is survived by four daughters and their husbands, Marion and David Payne of Plano,  Texas, Carolyn and David Hersh of Queensbury, N.Y., Nancy and Ronald Bullock of Aubrey,  Texas, and Constance Craven of Dallas,  Texas; one son and his wife, Dean and Angela Craven of Oneonta, N.Y.; one brother-in-law, Edward O. McCarthy of Drums, Pa.; six grandchildren, Elizabeth Campbell, Brian Payne, Barbara Lyons, Nathan Bullock, Caitlin Bullock and Jacqueline Bullock; and six great-grandchildren.

There will be no public service.

There will be a private service for the family only.

Burial will be in San Antonio,  Texas.

Katharina Abbott

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Mrs. Katharina Abbott, 66, passed away Sunday, Oct. 13, 2002, at her home after a long illness.

Kathie Abbott was born March 11, 1936, in Calma, Yugoslavia, the eldest daughter of Joseph and Katharina Tines, former residents of Roseboom.

She was employed for 41 years at the Clara Welsh Thanksgiving Home in Cooperstown, N.Y.

Survivors include her husband, Reuben Abbott, of Richfield Springs; her sisters, Irmgard Buess of Schoharie, N.Y., and Ilse Merryman of Alexandria, Va., currently working in Heidelberg, Germany.

She was predeceased by three brothers, Franz, Karl and Peter Tines.

Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family in the Roseboom Cemetery with the Rev. Ron Fralick officiating; burial will follow.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley, N.Y.

Eugenia Sitko

WORCESTER — Eugenia Sitko, 79, died Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2002, at Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown.

She was born June 24, 1923, in Seiny, Poland, the daughter of Joseph and Anna (Halecki) Sitko.

Jean was a U.S. Air Force veteran, serving at the end of World War II as an airplane mechanic.

She has lived in Worcester since the early 1950s. She opened the Schohanna Rest Home in Worcester and retired when she sold her home in 1990.

Jean was a member of St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church and the Alter Rosary Society.

Jean is survived by a cousin, Helena Lazarewicz of Worcester; and two nephews, Andrew Lazarewicz and wife, Ewa, of Florida, and Matthew Lazarewicz and wife, Anna, of Massachusetts.

She was predeceased by her parents; two sisters, Leonarda Sitko and Regina and her husband, Alex Elektorowicz.

Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 18, 2002, at the E.J. Skinner Co. Funeral Chapel in Worcester. The recitation of the Rosary will be at 8 p.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, 2002, at St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, with the Rev. Edward Golding as celebrant. Burial will follow at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Worcester.

Contributions may be made to St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, Main Street, Worcester, NY 12197.

Funeral arrangements are by E.J. Skinner Co., 155 Main St., Worcester.

Linda Brenneis

CHENANGO FORKS — Linda Brenneis, 52, of Chenango Forks passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2002, at her home.

She was born Sept. 22, 1950, daughter of Joseph and Frances Cook Roberts in Sidney.

Linda attended nursing school in Binghamton and has been employed as a nurse for 30 years. For the last 20 years, she has worked at Lourdes Hospital in Binghamton, where she was a charge nurse for the maternity ward.

She was a member of the National SIDS Organization and the Crime Victims Assistance Program.

Linda married James E. Brenneis on July 29, 1972; he survives and resides in Chenango Forks. Her two sons, Adam Brenneis of Vestal and Justin Brenneis of Norfolk, Va., survive. Her mother, Frances Roberts of Afton; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Judith Roberts of Sidney, Roberta and Charles Curley of Jamesville and Susan and Edmund Backus, of Jamesville; aunts and uncles, Carol and Ray  Johnson of Unadilla, Lee and Rita Cook of Florida and Bernice Loker of Florida; and several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive her.

Linda was predeceased by her father, Joseph Roberts, and sister, Jennifer Marie Brenneis.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Oct. 19, 2002, at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Tony Hipes of the United Methodist Church of Afton and Bainbridge officiating. Friends may call before the service on Saturday, beginning at 9 a.m.

Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery in Sidney.

Memorial contributions may be made to the SIDS Foundation or the St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-1905.

Arrangements are under the direction of the C.H. Landers Inc., 21 Main St., Sidney, NY 13838.

R. Thomas Peck

McKEES ROCKS, Pa. — The Rev. R. Thomas Peck, beloved husband of Pansy M. (Cobb) Peck of Kennedy Township, Pa., passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2002.

He is also survived by his loving son, Thomas Q. Peck of Oakmont, Pa.; as well as sisters, Emma Howland of Pine Top, Ariz., Rhoda Russ, Gertrude Loker, Doris Rowell, Louise Peck and Barbara Northrup, all of Walton, N.Y.; brothers, Winford Peck of Sprakers, N.Y., and Warren Peck of Walton, N.Y.; and by many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Warren and Hazel Jaycox Peck; and a brother, Ivan Peck.

The Rev. Peck was a 1963 graduate of Toccoa Falls College in Georgia and was ordained in 1966 in the Christian & Missionary Alliance Church.

He served several churches in New York state including Schenectady, Medina, Stamford and Delhi, before going to  Pennsylvania, where he had been the Pastor of Kennedy First Alliance Church for the past seven years.

He also knew the trade of carpentry, and was a member of the Montour Ministirium.

Friends are invited to a memorial service to be held on Sunday, Oct. 20, at 3 p.m. in the Kennedy First Alliance Church, 941 McCoy Road, McKees Rocks, PA 15136 or on Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2002, at 10 a.m. at Riverside Alliance Church, Stockton Avenue, Walton, N.Y.

Contributions in his memory are suggested to his late church.

Kenneth H. Underwood

WALTON — Kenneth H. Underwood, 83, of Walton, died Thursday, Oct. 17, in the Delaware Valley Hospital Walton after a long illness.

He was born April 18, 1919, in Sidney Center, the son of the late Henry and Fannie Sheldon Underwood.

He was married to Shirley Mae Jump on January 7, 1942.

He was employed at various jobs including bus driving, and for the New York State Department of Transportation in Walton. He was a member of the Riverside Alliance Church in Walton, a longtime member of the Walton Fire Department, and the CSEA.

He was well-known and liked by everyone. He spent his life taking care of his family, working in his garden, mowing lawns and visiting with everyone.

He was predeceased by his wife, Shirley, on March 1, 2002.

He is survived by three daughters and their husbands, Kathlyn and Samuel Bakker of Hinkley,  Calif., Rose and Dwight Phoenix of Walton and Lisa and George Haynes of Bloomville; one son, Lawrence and his wife, Sharon Underwood, of Walton; 13 grandchildren, Lawrence Underwood Jr., Neil Underwood, Janelle Underwood, Troy Bakker, Duane Bakker, Debra Sines, John Bakker, Timothy Bakker, Tammy Phoenix, Raquel Doig, Michael Phoenix, Michelle Phoenix and Kenneth Wagner; 24 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Calling hours will be Sunday, Oct. 20, 2002, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Clark & Winter Funeral Service Inc., at 25 Townsend St. in Walton.

Funeral Services will be held Monday, Oct. 21, 2002, at 2 p.m. at the Riverside Alliance Church on Riverside Avenue, Walton, with the Rev. Edward Lowell and the Rev. Carl Butler officiating.

Interment will be in Walton Cemetery in Walton.

Memorial contributions in Ken's memory may be made to: Walton Fire Department, 61 West St., Walton, NY 13856; Walton Emergency Squad, 61 West St., Walton; Delaware Valley Hospital, 1 Titus Place, Walton; or Catskill Area Hospice, 452 Main St., Oneonta.

W. Thomas Joyce

ONEONTA — W. Thomas Joyce, 84, of Oneonta died Thursday, Oct. 17, 2002, at A.O. Fox Nursing Home.

He was born Jan. 12, 1918, in Unadilla to Lewis and Eva Harding Joyce.

He was a salesman at heart, working for several firms in Oneonta as a car salesman. He also ran a TV and appliance store in Sidney and was manager of Greensport Manor in Hudson for a time.

He enjoyed golf, reading, hunting, fishing, his computer and working in his woodworking shop.

He was a member of the Elks Lodge in Sidney and helped in organizing the emergency squad in Otego.

He attended the Main Street Baptist Church in Oneonta.

He was predeceased by his parents and a sister, Katherine Laraway.

He is survived by his ex-wife, Claire Joyce; five children, Duane and wife Toni Joyce of Otego, Sandra Joyce of Rivesville, W.Va., Robert Joyce of Bethlehem, Pa., Craig and wife Diana Joyce of Morris and Marny and husband Matt Tipple of Mellenville; 13 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Bookhout Funeral Home in Otego, with the Rev. Ned Lintern officiating.

Calling hours will start at 10 a.m. Monday at the Bookhout Funeral Home.

Interment will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery in Sidney.

Memorials may be made to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820, who helped give very loving care.

Services are under the direction of Bookhout Funeral Home of Otego.
