David A. Condon

TREADWELL — David A. Condon, 66, of Treadwell died Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2002, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

He was born Oct. 11, 1936, in Margaretville, the son of David C. and Mabel (Davis) Condon.

He married Patricia Burns on Nov. 3, 1957.

Graduated from Andes Central School in 1954, he had been active in sports: baseball and basketball and the Andes Town Team. He kept an interest in sports all his life, especially the Giants Football Team.

Many of his other interests were round and square dancing, Pinochle Club, reading and listening to county music.

When he was younger, David worked at Gerry's Horse Farm, the Andes Creamery, Frasier's Creamery and the dairy farm at Delhi College. He was a farmer for most of his life, retiring in September 2001.

He enjoyed showing Ayrshire Cattle at the Delaware County and New York State Fairs.

He was a member of the Treadwell United Methodist Church, the Butternut Valley Grange No. 1533 and the Eastern Milk Producers, which is now known as Dairy Farmers of America.

Surviving are his wife, Pat; two sons, David E. and Marcia Condon of East Meredith, and Michael Condon of Delhi; a daughter-in-law, Rebecca Condon of Mount Vision; a special daughter, Susan Ray of East Meredith; nine grandchildren, David M., Valerie and Matthew of East Meredith, Melissa Ambrose (David) of Treadwell, Rachel, Dawn, Amy and Jonathon of Delhi, and Sarah of East Meredith; two great-granddaughters, Alexis and Kila; one aunt, Dorothy Davis; three brothers, James Condon of Fort Plain, Douglas and Barbara Condon of New Kingston, and Richard and Marilyn Condon, Unadilla; and one sister, Virginia and Stanley Dibble of Hamden.

A son, Timothy; and a brother, Kenneth predeceased him.

Memorial services will take place at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 27, 2002, at the Treadwell United Methodist Church, Treadwell, with the Rev. Lyle Linder and the Rev. Elliott Oakes officiating. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 2 to 3 p.m. at the church and light refreshments will be served following the service.

Burial will take place at Woodland Cemetery, Delhi, at the convenience of the family.

Contributions in his memory may be made to Treadwell United Methodist Church or American Heart Association.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

John H. Forbes Sr.

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — John H. Forbes Sr., 53, of Park Street passed away on Wednesday evening, Oct. 23, 2002, in Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown.

He was born on Aug. 5, 1949, in Cooperstown, a son of the late Donald and Dorothy (Sprague) Forbes.

A lifelong area resident he was raised and educated in Cherry Valley. He graduated from Cherry Valley High School Class of 1969.

On Jan. 8, 1979, he married Teri Spraker in Virginia.

A carpenter by trade he had worked for various companies until 1990.

John was full of life, love and laughter. He was an outgoing person and will be remembered as a generous, caring and helpful person.

Surviving are his wife of 23 years, Teri; a son, John Forbes, daughter-in-law, Trisha Forbes; a daughter, Jamie Forbes-Talbot; two grandchildren, Adrienne Forbes and Joshua Talbot; one sister, Joan Brown, all of Richfield Springs; his mother-in-law, Gertrude Spraker of Springfield Center; several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, brother and sisters-in-law. He also leaves his canine pal, Lexi.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Carrie Lynn on Jan. 24, 1996; a brother, Donald Forbes; and a sister, Leona Forbes.

Funeral services will be held at 5 p.m. on Saturday in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James St., Richfield Springs, with the Rev. Alan Miller, pastor of the Richfield Springs Bible Church, officiating. The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends on Saturday from 1 to 3 p.m.

Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family.

Susie Harrington

BURLINGTON FLATS — Susie Harrington, 96, of Burlington Flats went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2002, at her home.

She was born July 29, 1906, in Edmeston, the daughter of Fred and Nettie (Burton) Nichols.

She married Francis Harrington on May 4, 1928. He predeceased her on Nov. 30, 1992.

Susie will be remembered for her love of her family and helping others. She enjoyed cooking and baking bread and rolls and helping at church suppers. She had a strong faith and was deeply devoted to her church and read devotional readings daily.

Susie had an interest in family genealogy and enjoyed keeping track of family members. A devoted chocolate lover, Susie particularly loved M&M's and Hershey's Chocolate.

She is survived by her three daughters, Myrta Harrington of New Berlin, Freda and Russell Arnold of Palmer, Alaska, and Alene and Russell Struck of Basking Ridge, N.J.; 11 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; her sister, Helen Mayne; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, Francis, Susie was also predeceased by two daughters, Alma Harrington in 1984, and Eva Hawes in 1986; a sister, Eva Crandell; and a brother, Henry Nichols.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 26, 2002, at the United Methodist Church in Burlington Flats, with the Rev. Russell Arnold officiating.

Burial will follow at the Burlington Flats Cemetery.

Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 25, 2002, at the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home in Edmeston.

The family would like to extend special thanks to Mary, Meg and Ellen for their care of Susie in the last few months of her life.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the United Methodist Church in Burlington Flats.

Frances M. Thayer

ILION — Mrs. Frances M. Thayer, 64, of Ilion died Thursday morning, Oct. 24, 2002, at Little Falls Hospital.

Frances, or "Bucky," as she was affectionately known, was born on Dec. 1, 1937, in the town of Middlefield, a daughter of Frederick and Ida Mae (Miller) Yager.

She first married Larry Earl Russell Sr., who died in 1962. She then married Robert N. Thayer on May 19, 1963, in the town of Middlefield.

Raised in Middlefield, she began her education in a one-room school house on the Middlefield Center Road and later attended Cooperstown schools.

Her life centered around her family, most especially taking care of her grandson, Bobby Duncan.

She volunteered for many hours at the Mohawk Valley Nursing Home, where she came to be known as "Grandma."

Bucky is survived by her husband, Robert N. Thayer, of Ilion; three sons, Larry E. Russell and his wife, Darlene, of Ilion, Timothy J. Russell and his friend, Jennifer, of Herkimer, and David T. Russell and his wife, Tammy, of Missouri; two daughters, Vicki L. Oyer and her husband, George, of Canajoharie, and Brenda S. Russell and her companion, Hugh Broadbent Jr., of Theresa; 12 grandchildren, Heather and Larry Russell, Billi-Jo and Rebecca Russell, David and Orlando Russell, Robert Duncan, Hope Russell, George Oyer, Matthew Russell, Hugh Broadbent Jr., and Jacob Broadbent; three great-grandsons; two brothers, Melvin E. Yager of Middlefield Center, and Steven D. Yager and his wife, Sheryl, of the town of Burlington; three sisters, Virginia Fort of Index, Dayle Chandler and her husband, Cecil, of Little Falls, and Rose Pink and her husband, Donald, of Cooperstown; a brother-in-law, Lynn Darrow; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by three sisters, Louise Darrow, Nancy Searles and Grace Butler.

A graveside funeral and committal service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 28, 2002, in the Fly Creek Valley Cemetery, with the Rev. Douglas S. Burleigh, chaplain for Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown, officiating.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. on Sunday evening, Oct. 27, 2002, at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home, 82 Chestnut St., Cooperstown, when Bucky's family will be in attendance.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Dorothy Ann Remy

MARGARETVILLE — Dorothy Ann Remy, 71, of Margaretville passed away Thursday, Oct. 24, 2002, in Yorktown Heights.

She was born on Sept. 30, 1931, in Somerville, N.J., the daughter of Joseph A. Domanack and Mary M. Kozic.

She married Louis W. Remy on June 23, 1951, in the St. Joseph's Church in Bayonne, N.J. He passed away on April 24, 1993.

She graduated from Daniel P. Sweeney High School on June 15, 1949, Bayonne, N.J.

She was a homemaker in her own home in Margaretville. She moved to Margaretville in 1971 from Bayonne, N.J.

She was a member of the Community Chorale of the Catskills, Alzheimer's Support Group, and the Sacred Heart Church.

She is survived by two daughters, Joanne "Remy" Maldacker and son-in-law, Frank Maldacker and Lenore Remy and son-in-law, John Roucek; five grandchildren, Shaunna, Tonya, Kyle, Samantha and Tyrell; two great-grandchildren, Aiden and Zachary.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 28, 2002, at the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville, with the Very Rev. Robert H. Purcell, officiating.

Burial will be in the Andes Cemetery, Andes.

Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 27, 2002, at the funeral home.

Contributions may be made in memory of Dorothy Ann Remy to Hospice Care of Westchester and Putnam, Inc., 100 South Bedford Road, Mount Kisco, N.Y. 10549 or any local chapter of Hospice.

Funeral arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Anne Smith

STAMFORD — Anne Smith, 91, of Stamford passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2002, in the Robinson Terrace in Stamford.

She is survived by her daughter, Anita Sweeney of Stamford; and her son, Edward R. Smith of Ballston Lake.

Friends may call from 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 25, 2002, at the Hall Funeral Home, 40 Main St., in Stamford.

Prayers will be said at the funeral home at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 26, 2002, followed by an 11 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial in Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church, Stamford, with the Rev. Anthony Ligato as celebrant.

Burial will be in the Saint Raymonds Cemetery, Bronx.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford, under the direction of William A. Tari.

Rev. Gerald Clune

ONEONTA — The Rev. Gerald Francis Clune, 88, of Oneonta passed away on Friday, Oct. 25, 2002, at his residence.

Father Clune was born on April 3, 1914, in Oneonta, the son of Daniel J. and Myrtle (Reynolds) Clune.

He attended St. Charles College, St. Bonaventure and Christ the King Seminary. He was ordained as a priest by Bishop Gibbons on May 18, 1940, in Immaculate Conception Cathedral in Albany.

He first served as associate pastor in St. Theresa's Parish in Windham, before being assigned to St. Francis Parish in Trenton, N.J., and then St. Francis Parish in Herkimer. From April 1943 until May 1946 he served as a military chaplain.

Upon his return from the military, he served as an associate pastor at St. Patrick's in Johnsville, St. Helen's in Schenectady and St. Peter's in Troy. He then returned to the military for five years from January 1951 until January 1956.

From February 1956 until August 1960, he served in the Diocesan Cemetery Office and as the chaplain for the Resurrection Sisters in Castleton-on-Hudson. He was the hospital chaplain for St. Clare's Hospital in Schenectady, from August 1960 until April 1961.

Father Clune served as pastor of St. Paul's in Hancock from April 1961 to July 1965, Sacred Heart in Sidney from July 1965 to June 1969, and finally at St. John the Baptist in Greenville, from June 1969 until November 1973. He retired in April 1974.

Father Clune is survived by a sister-in-law, Mattie Clune of Oneonta; his nieces and nephews, Diane and William Leo of Florida, N.Y., Michael and Heidi Clune of Branchville, N.J., Marie and Jerry Pitarresi of New Hartford, Janet and Ron Baker of Perry, Daniel and Martha Clune of Norwell, Mass., Robert and Linda Clune of Meadville, Pa., Paul and Susan Clune of Oneonta, Colleen Clune, wife of John Clune who died on March 25, 2002, of Oneonta, James and Gail Clune of Rochester, and Joan and John Fiato of Florida; along with many great-nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by three brothers, J. Arthur Clune, Harry L. Clune and Daniel J. Clune.

The Reception of the Body will be at 4 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 28, at St. Mary's Church in Oneonta, with viewing until 7 p.m. when vespers will be celebrated. A Mass of Christian burial will be offered on Tuesday, Oct. 29, at 11 a.m. at St. Mary's Church, with the Most Rev. Howard J. Hubbard, bishop of Albany, officiating.

Burial will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Emmons

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home in Oneonta.

Howard R. Fitch

CAPEVILLE, Va. — Howard R. Fitch, 74, of Capeville, Va., passed peacefully, Thursday, Oct. 24, at Shore Memorial Hospital in Nassawadox, Va.

He was born Feb. 16, 1928, in Delhi. He was the son of the late Frank A. and Georgia Hafele Fitch.

He was married in 1953 to Hazel Storck, who survives him at home in Capeville.

Mr. Fitch was a resident of the Delhi and Unadilla areas most of his life. The last 15 years he had been a resident of Capeville.

He retired from Amphenol in Sidney in 1985, after 35 years of service. He served as a police officer for the village of Sidney and was also a town constable for the town of Unadilla.

Mr. Fitch was a WWII U.S. Army veteran, a member of the Capeville Masonic Lodge #107, Eastern Star, Fraternal Order of Police, and a lifetime member of the American Legion.

Along with his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Cynthia Y. Ryan, and her husband, Graden, of Unadilla; a son, Richard F. Fitch and his wife, Susan, of Sidney; four grandchildren, Graydon Ryan of Winston-Salem, N.C., Eric Ryan of Norwich, Rebecca Ryan of Unadilla and Jonathan Fitch of Sidney; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by two brothers.

Graveside services will be held Tuesday, Oct. 29, at Woodland Cemetery in Delhi at 2 p.m.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. on Monday at C. H. Landers Funeral Home, at 21 Main St. in Sidney.

Memorial contributions may be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society Annual Fund Donor Services Center, PO Box 4594, NY, NY 10163-4594.

Murray D. Mai

ONEONTA — Mr. Murray D. Mai, 49, of Oneonta and formerly of Binghamton, died unexpectedly, Thursday, Oct. 24, 2002, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

He was born Dec. 10, 1952, in Binghamton, the son of Walter and Bessie (Negelow) Mai.

He married Patricia Kirk on Oct. 18, 1980, in Binghamton.

Murray lived most of his life in Binghamton and moved to the Oneonta area in 1992. He was a security guard at various industries. Murray will be remembered as a wonderful man who was always there to lend a helping hand to anyone who needed it. While in Binghamton, he attended Temple Israel.

He is survived by his wife of 22 years, Patty of Oneonta; a daughter; a sister and brother-in-law, Rhoda and Martin Vollmer of East Symm; a brother and sister-in-law, Howard and Alice Mai of Binghamton; as well as several sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 29, at 1 p.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home, at 357 Main St. in Oneonta, with the Rev. William D. Bouton, pastor of the First United Methodist Church in Oneonta, officiating.

Burial will follow at the Oneonta Plains Cemetery.

Calling hours will be offered on Tuesday from 11 a.m. until service time.

It has been requested that in lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the American Heart Association, Heart Gifts Processing Center, PO Box 3049, Syracuse, NY 13220 in loving memory of Murray D. Mai.

Funeral arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.
