Marjorie Richards
EAST SPRINGFIELD — Marjorie Irene Richards, 93, of East Springfield, died Thursday, Oct. 24, 2002, at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.
She was born May 16, 1909, in East Springfield, the daughter of Addison and Zora (Eckler) Van Alstine.
She was married to Everett J. Richards on July 20, 1935, in East Springfield. He predeceased her in 1998.
She was a homemaker, a member of the First Presbyterian Church of East Springfield, Daughters of the American Revolution and former member of the Springfield Grange.
Marjorie is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Joan and Richard VanDewerker; and her grandsons, David VanDewerker, Kevin VanDewerker and Tina Wilkens, and Mark VanDewerker, all of Cherry Valley. She is also survived by her great-granddaughter, Emilee VanDewerker, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Monday, Oct. 28, at 11 a.m. in the First Presbyterian Church of East Springfield, with Pastor Susan Burdsall and Pastor Ronald Fralick officiating.
Burial will follow at Springfield Cemetery.
Calling hours will be on Sunday, Oct. 27, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Ottman Funeral Home in Cherry Valley.
Contributions in memory of Mrs. Richards may be made to the Springfield First Responders and Fire Department, Cherry Valley Emergency Squad or the First Presbyterian Church of East Springfield.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home in Cherry Valley.
Sophie Konstan
EAST MEREDITH — Sophie (Cynthia) Konstan, 90, of East Meredith, and formerly of St. Lucie, Fla., died Thursday, Oct. 24, 2002, at Chase Memorial Nursing Home in New Berlin.
She was born July 22, 1912, in Greece, the daughter of Peter and Mary (Vlamos) Simihtis.
She married Gregory Konstan in Manhattan, on Oct. 12, 1947, and he predeceased her in 1996.
A wonderful person, Sophie's career was as a milliner for many years in Manhattan, where she was a dedicated worker. She loved her home and was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother.
A daughter, Zoe Mary Menge, and son-in-law, Rudy, of East Meredith; a grandson, Andreas Gregory Menge of East Meredith; two brothers, John and Elena Simihtis of Montgomery, N.Y., and Tom Simihtis of North Carolina; and a cousin, Paul and Elizabeth Simihtis, survive.
Burial will take place at the convenience of the family.
Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home in Delhi.
Thomas W. Malone
COOPERSTOWN — Thomas William Malone went home to be with the Lord early Wednesday morning, Oct. 30, 2002, and joined his sister, Adeline Anstead, who died on Feb. 6, 2002, and his brother, Edward R. Malone, who died on March 6, 2002. Tom died peacefully at home, surrounded by his family.
Tom was born in Brooklyn to Thomas John Malone and Adeline Jaeger Malone on June 10, 1927.
Raised in Brooklyn, Tom graduated from Boys' High School there.
Serving his country during World War II, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy on June 9, 1945, and was honorably discharged on Aug. 12, 1946.
He then attended Pratt College and New York University, receiving a bachelor of science degree in Industrial Engineering.
He married Marlene J. (Lee) Pacini on Jan. 8, 1953, in Greenwich, Conn.
Tom was first employed by Mergenthaler Linotype in Brooklyn, and then Olivetti Corp. in New York City.
In 1971, he and his family moved to Cooperstown, when he purchased the Hotel Pratt. Tom and Lee operated the Hotel Pratt until his retirement in 1992.
He served the Cooperstown community for 30 years. A Village Trustee from 1983 until 1986, he served as President of the Cooperstown Chamber of Commerce in 1976, where he introduced the web site concept, and for 20 years was a member and served as president in 1978 of the Lions Club of Cooperstown. He was also a member of the Sgt. Walter P. Eggleston Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 7128.
A communicant of St. Mary's "Our Lady of the Lake" Catholic Church, he taught the confirmation classes for five years.
A lifelong and devoted Republican, Tom loved politics and served as the chairman of the Republican Party in Cooperstown for 17 years and as secretary/treasurer for four years.
Tom's first love was his family, followed by his love of the Civil War. Along with the Rev. Douglas C. Smith, he founded the Abner Doubleday Civil War Round Table. Opera and baseball were equally important in his life.
After he was diagnosed with cancer, Tom took up painting and produced his own folk art Christmas cards for four years. This year's card is unfinished on his easel.
Tom will be sadly missed but happily remembered by family and friends. He was a man who loved the variety of travel, stamp collecting, coin collecting, woodworking and football; computers, antiques, the flag and his country.
He was a friend to many and was compassionate to all.
Tom is survived by his wife of nearly 50 years, Lee Malone, of Cooperstown; and four daughters and three sons-in-law, Susan Trainor and husband Bill of Ronkonkoma, Gwen Malone, Nancy Tallman and husband Jim and Carol Jennings and husband Chip, all of Cooperstown. Also surviving are his dearly loved grandchildren, Clayton Weeks and his wife, Erin, Ryan and Michael Jacobson, Eamon and Meaghan Trainor, Brooke Bowen and her husband, Tim, Jared Tallman and Adam and Kerri Jenning; and his greatly loved great-grandchildren, Colin Bowen and triplets, Riley, Molly and Andrew Bowen. He is also survived by his sisters, Mrs. Virginia Honsch of Enfield, Conn., and Mrs. Helen Banta of Clifton, N.J.; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at noon on Saturday, Nov. 2, 2002, at St. Mary's 'Our Lady of the Lake' Catholic Church in Cooperstown, with Fr. John P. Rosson, pastor, presiding. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 1, 2002, at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown, when Tom's family will be in attendance.

William Moore Jr.
SIDNEY — William S. Moore Jr., 85, of 8 Concord St., Sidney, died unexpectedly Wednesday morning, Oct. 30, 2002, at his residence.
He was born May 30, 1917, in New York City, the son of the late William S. and Mabel Moore Sr.
William was a graduate of the Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute, Brooklyn.
On Sept. 27, 1956, he was married to Helen Snyder. Helen predeceased him on June 8, 1981. He later married Barbara Hammond DeSalvo on Oct. 1, 1983, in Sidney.
Bill was engineer manager for the Electrical Components Division of Bendix, Sidney. He retired in 1983, after completing over 30 years with the company.
Bill was a captain in the U.S. Army serving his country during World War II.
He was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Sidney, and the Charles L. Jacobi Post 183 American Legion, Sidney. He was a former member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara Moore, Sidney; son, Robert Dahl, Unadilla; daughter, Sondra Dahl, Elmira; two stepdaughters, Christine Bianco, New York City, and Monica Dare, Vancouver, Canada; two stepsons, Peter DeSalvo, Jacksonville, Fla., and Jeffrey DeSalvo, Irving, Texas; six grandchildren, Dalyce Frawley, Bainbridge, Julie Travis, Carlisle, Pa., Matthew Cox, Asheville, N.C., Christine McAllister, San Rafael, Calif., Jennifer Seiler, San Rafael, Calif., and Allison Cox, Orono, Maine; stepgranddaughter, Karen Faria, New York City; and seven great-grandchildren.
A sister, Doreen C. Moore predeceased Bill, several years ago.
Funeral and committal services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 2, 2002, from the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, with the Rev. Fr. Michael Shank pastor of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Sidney, officiating. Burial will in the Prospect Hill Cemetery, Sidney.
Friends are invited to call at their convenience Friday at the funeral chapel.
Memorial gifts in his name may be directed to the Sidney Emergency Squad, if desired.
Edward Schauss
SIDNEY — Edward Schauss, 92, of 75 West Pearl St., Sidney, died Tuesday morning, Oct. 29, 2002, at The Hospital, Sidney.
He was born July 31, 1910, in Brooklyn, the son of the late Edward and Ada Reid Schauss. Edward grew up in the Richmond Hill area. He relocated to the Bainbridge area in 1985.
On Jan. 1, 1938, he married Olive Putman. She predeceased him on Jan. 18, 1987. Edward was later married to Nancy Rudd Simpson on Oct. 10, 1987.
For over 25 years, Mr. Schauss was a sales representative for the Yardley Company of New York City.
He was an avid sailor, gardener and woodworker.
Mr. Schauss was a member of the East Guilford Presbyterian Church.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy Schauss, Sidney; son, Edward Putman Schauss, Goleta, Calif.; two daughters, Lydia Jane Benedict, Goleta, Calif., and Amy Hastings Schauss, Elmira; sister, Evelyn M. Lawrence, Huntington; granddaughter, Kimberley Schauss Hudson; four grandsons, Geoffrey Parker Coco, Dean Edward Schauss, Aaron Reid Robinson and David Dieim Robinson; three great-grandchildren, James, Jesse and Jayme. A stepson and two stepdaughters and several stepgrandchildren also survive.
A sister, Ada; and a brother, Fred predeceased Edward.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 3, 2002, from the East Guilford Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Allen L. Presby, pastor officiating.
Burial will be at the family's convenience in the Mt. Hope Cemetery, Norwich.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts in his name may be directed to the East Guilford Presbyterian Church or to the Sidney Emergency Squad if desired.
