Lucille Murphy Maher, 85, of Syracuse died Tuesday. Born in Little Falls, she lived in Sebring, Fla., 23 years before moving to Syracuse in May. She retired in 1979 as a supervisor to traffic after 42 years with New York Telephone Co. She was a communicant of St. Patrick's Church in Syracuse and was an American Red Cross volunteer in Sebring.Survivors: Her husband of 57 years, William R. Sr.; four daughters, Diana  Johnson of Salt Lake City, Linda Harmon of Port Saint Lucie, Fla., Lucille Keller of Camillus and Kathleen Maher of Syracuse; two sons, William R. Jr. of Syracuse and Daniel of Cicero; a brother, Daniel Murphy Jr. of Syracuse; 11 grandchildren; a great-grandson. Services: 12:30 p.m. Friday in St. Patrick's Church, 216 Lowell Ave., Syracuse. James F. McDonald

James F. McDonald, 85, of 739 Village Blvd. S., Baldwinsville, died Wednesday at Rosewood Heights Health Care Center. He was born in Philadelphia, Pa. He retired in 1988 as a regional manager for Anheuser-Busch Inc. and had also worked for Onondaga Beverage Corp. He was a member of U.S. Brewers Foundation, Golf Collectors Society of America, Foxfire Golf Club, Syracuse, and Hidden Lakes Golf Club in Florida. He was a member of St. Augustine's Church in Baldwinsville. His wife, Carmen R., died in 2001; a son, James R., died this year.Survivors: A daughter, Nancy Coe of Pittsford; two grandchildren. Services: 8:30 a.m. Saturday at Edward J. Ryan & Son Funeral Home and 9 a.m. in St. Charles Borromeo Church. Burial, St. Agnes Cemetery. Calling hours, 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, 1628 W. Genesee St., Syracuse.

Catherine M. O'Brien

Catherine M. O'Brien of Sydney, Australia, died Sept. 3 of colon cancer. Born in Syracuse, she lived there 25 years before moving away in 1966 and also lived in Syracuse and Alexandria Bay many summers. She graduated from State University College at Cortland, received a master's degree from Syracuse University and a Ph.D. from Ohio State University. She retired this year as a senior lecturer for the Department of Human Movement and Health Education at University of Sydney after 20 years. She was awarded first life membership of New South Wales Judges Assembly and was a liaison to the Russian gymnastic team at the 2000 Olympics. She was a contributor to the International Sport and Comparative Physical Education Association. She was a member of Church of St. Anthony in the Fields in Terrey Hills, New South Wales.Survivors: Four sisters, Mary O'Brien CSJ of Elmira, Virginia M. Hall of Pompano Beach, Fla., Margaret M. O'Brien of Cullman, Ala., and Patricia McShane of Marcellus. Services: 8:30 a.m. Saturday in Holy Family Church, 124 Chapel Drive, Fairmount. Contributions: Sacred Heart Hospice, 170 Darlinghurst Ave., Darlinghurst, New South Wales 2010.

Ivan S. Rice

Ivan S. Rice, 47, of Greer Road, Lebanon, died Friday. Born in Hamilton, he graduated from Oriskany Falls High School. He had worked at Utica Cutlery. His father, Stanley, died in 1997.Survivors: A daughter, Jennifer Rice of Westmoreland; his mother, Betty Rice of Bouckville; four sisters, Judith Hickman of Knoxboro, Linda Lyon of Vernon Center, Betty Lou Carroll of Oriskany Falls and Wendy Bono of Bouckville; a brother, James of Deansboro. Dennis L. "Dee" Russell Sr., 70, of 127 Creamery Road, Scriba, died Wednesday. Born in Oswego, he was a life resident of the area. He retired in 1995 as a machine operator after 36 years at Nestle Co. in Fulton. He was a veteran of the Army and the Naval Reserves. A daughter, Toni M. LaMond, died in 1994.Survivors: His wife, the former Patricia Fitzgerald; two daughters, Cheryl Bockheim of Syracuse and Denise Wallace of Scriba; a son, Dennis Jr. of Oswego; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren. She was a member of Oswego Quilters, Oswego Retired Senior Volunteer Program and Square Dancers of Scriba and Oswego. Boris Stoianoff, 87, of Alterra Villas, Syracuse, died Tuesday. Born in Syracuse, he had lived at 121 Ambergate Road in DeWitt, was a life resident of the area and owned a camp on Cross Lake. He graduated from Vocational High School. He retired in 1978 as a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service after 33 years. He was a communicant of St. Sophia's Greek Orthodox Church and worked in the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. His wife, the former Florence Ward, died in 1991.Survivors: A daughter, Pandora Stoianoff-Marks of Bellevue, Wash.; a son, Bo of Fairmount; a brother, Carl of North Syracuse; five grandchildren. He was a police officer in Syracuse for 30 years and a member of Police Benevolent Association and Fraternal Order of Police. He was a member of Light of Christ Church in Clearwater and was a third degree member of Knights of Columbus in Syracuse.Survivors: His wife, Margaret; a daughter, Patricia Mabe of Syracuse; a son, Thomas of Palm Springs,  Calif.; a stepson, Steven Loughlin of Arizona; a stepdaughter, Debra Loughlin of Las Vegas; two sisters, Marie Smith and Margaret Ledo, both of New York state; three grandchildren; a great-grandchild.
