He attended Henninger High School and was attending Sidney A.  Johnson Vocational School.Survivors: His mother, Jenny Burley, and his father, Floyd McDowell, both of Syracuse; a sister, Phateema Dixon of Syracuse; four brothers, Floyd Burley, and Marvin Lindsey, Marquan Lindsey and Zyshawn Lindsey, all of Syracuse; his paternal grandmother, Anne McDowell of  South Carolina; his maternal grandparents, Eleanor and Arthur L. Leo Canale

Leo Canale, 80, of 3 Brentwood Drive, Homer, died Saturday. Born in Cortland, he graduated from Cortland High School and attended State University College of Agriculture and Technology at Morrisville. He retired in 1984 as a supervisor after 38 years with New York Telephone. He was a communicant of St. Mary's Church in Cortland. He was an Army Air Forces veteran of World War II.Survivors: His wife of 50 years, the former Joanne Braun; a daughter, Dee Canale of Bethel, Conn.; four sons, Jon of Sterling Heights, Mich., Jim of Homer, Len of Tinton Falls, N.J., and Tom of Colorado Springs,  Colo.; a sister, Frances Lamb of Hamilton; two brothers, Tony of Cortland and Chet of Syracuse; two grandchildren. Anne E. Matkoski DiRienzo, 77, of Whitmore Road, Salina, died Friday. She was born in Mexico. She attended Nottingham High School. She retired in 1976 after more than 35 years as a waitress at several local restaurants, including  White Tower in Eastwood, Martin's Chicken on the Roof in North Syracuse and the Howard Johnson's in Northern Lights, Mattydale. She was a communicant of St. Margaret's Church. She served as a Cub Scout den mother. She was a member of the Mattydale-Hinsdale Little League Auxiliary. Her husband, Joseph, died in 1978.Survivors: Two sons, Bernard M. of Brewerton and Joseph N. of Syracuse; two brothers, Leon Ilnitzki of North Syracuse and John Ilnitzki of Syracuse. Eric F. Gardner

Eric F. Gardner, 89, of 213 Wellington Road, DeWitt, died Thursday. Born in Nova Scotia, Canada, he graduated from Boston Latin School and Harvard University, where he received his doctoral degree. He retired in 1979 from Syracuse University, where he was Slocum professor of psychology and education emeritus. He was senior author of the Stanford Achievement Tests. He was a 15-year member of the committee of examiners which supervised and determined policy for the SAT of the College Entrance Examination Board. He was a consultant for a number of utilities including Niagara Mohawk and General Public Utilities Corp. He was a member of the faculty of state Regents Nuclear Technology Program. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. His first wife, the former Catherine Smith, died in 1997.Survivors: His wife, the former Polly Price Butler; a daughter, Elizabeth Bennett of Ballston Spa; a brother, Robert of North Hollywood,  Calif.; two grandchildren. Services: Private. Burial, Oakwood Cemetery, Syracuse. No calling hours. Greenleaf Funeral Home, Syracuse, has arrangements. She retired as a bookkeeper in 1975 after 20 years with E.W. Edwards. She was a communicant of St. Mary's Church in Minoa. She retired as a relocation officer in 1990 after 15 years with the Syracuse Office of Community Development. She was the 2001 recipient of the  Jefferson Award for volunteer work at Walsh Hospital of Midstate Correctional Facility. She also received the St. Andrew the Apostle Church Dorothy Day Award and the Catholic Charities Monsignor Brady Award. She was a volunteer at the Bishop Foery Foundation.Survivors: Her husband of 46 years, John F.; a sister, Julie Sharpe of Skaneateles; a brother, Phil Klein of Syracuse. Charles W. Marsfelder, 60, of Bridgeport died Friday. Born in Syracuse, he graduated from North Syracuse High School and Syracuse University. He retired in 1994 as a sound technician and electrician after 30 years with Syracuse University, where he operated the sound system at Manley Field House and the Carrier Dome. He was a member of the Bridgeport United Methodist Church, where he was a member of the administrative board, assistant organist and leader of the youth fellowship. He was secretary, past president, senior adviser of the Explorer Post. He was a life member of the Bridgeport Volunteer Fire Department and was a member of the Onondaga County Volunteer Firemen's Association, the Madison County Firemen's Advisory Board and the state Firemen's Association. He was an Army veteran of Vietnam.Survivors: Six cousins, Beverly Ball of Brewerton, Roberta Hahn of Baldwinsville, Roger and Larry Putnam, both of Cicero, Richard Putnam of Liverpool and Barbara Persen of Ticonderoga.
