Howard F. Herman

CHERRY VALLEY — Howard Frank Herman, 85, of Zephyrhills, Fla., passed away on Monday, Oct. 28, 2002.

He was born April 5, 1917, in Rudd, Iowa, the son of Frank and Grace (Renshaw) Herman.

He was a graduate of Sharon Springs Central School. He and his family operated a dairy farm in Sharon Springs for many years, then moved to a farm on Middlefield Center Road in Cherry Valley, which they operated for 42 years. After retirement, he and his brother Clifford spent summers in East Springfield and winters in Zephyrhills, Fla.

He was predeceased by his younger brother, Clifford Herman, his older sister, Eleanor Burnside, as well as his parents.

He is survived by a sister and brother-in-law, Enid and Claude Graham of Cherry Valley; four nieces, Eileen Morton of Sharon Springs, Claudia Constantino of Melbourne, Fla., Charlene Graham of Weatogue, Conn., and Gloria Seccombe of Barkhamsted, Conn.; three nephews, Dennis Graham of Coldsprings,  Texas, Douglas Graham of Ilion and Wayne Graham of Cherry Valley.

Funeral services and burial will be in Sharon Springs at the convenience of the family.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home of Cherry Valley.

Sheila Van Buren

EAST WORCESTER — Sheila Marian Strong Van Buren, the daughter of James and Alma (Roseboom) Strong of Westford and the wife of Ron Van Buren of East Worcester, died Thursday, Oct. 31, 2002, at her home,

A celebration of life will take place Saturday, Nov. 9, 2002, at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Worcester, with the Rev. Susan Strang officiating.

In lieu of flowers, Sheila requested donations be made to either the Westford United Methodist Church, Main Street, Westford, NY 13488-0197 or the Community Food Bank, c/o The First Presbyterian Church, Main Street, Worcester, NY 12197.

Arrangements are by E. J. Skinner Co., 155 Main St., Worcester.

Vincent E. Strebe

ANDES — Vincent E. Strebe Sr., 89, formerly of Andes, passed away on Saturday morning, Nov. 2, 2002, at Chandler Hall, Newtown, Bucks County, Pa., where he had been residing for the past two years.

The son of William and Margaret (Flannigan) Strebe, he was born April 15, 1913, in New York City, and married Eleanor Emma Bohn on May 28, 1938, in Jersey City. After a devoted marriage of 62 years, she died on Oct. 16, 2000.

Prior to retirement, Vince was a supervisor for Joseph Dixon's Crucibles, Jersey City, and later American Vitrified. For a number of years he was also self-employed, which allowed him to move his family to 10 different locations, while teaching them about a wonderful world and the country he loved so much.

Moving to Andes in 1980, Vince rejoiced in every day and considered it a gift, loved nature, bird watching and the changes that each season brought. Over the years, he taught the potter's wheel, his hobby, to many people, continuing to do so at Chandler Hall, where he also joyfully taught other forms of art to the residents and children who attended his classes.

A pillar of strength and courage to those who knew him, he was a devoted, caring husband and proud father of nine children who will treasure their precious memories and not forget his strong love of family and quick sense of humor. Each family member, friend and casual acquaintance will have a special place in his or her heart reserved for Vince and the "love of life" memories he left with them.

Surviving are his children, Nancy Oden of Maine, Gail Patullo of New Jersey, Joan Kobel of Florida, Martha Cooley of New York, Priscilla Vollmann of Massachusetts, Karen Lawler of  Pennsylvania, Vincent Strebe Jr. of New Jersey, Rebecca Rogers of Colorado, Sarah James of North Carolina; sons-in-law; 15 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Friends are invited to call from 2 to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 5, at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi, when the family will be in attendance.

A funeral Mass will be at 9 a.m. Wednesday at St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church, Delhi, with the Rev. James McDevitt presiding, and burial will follow at Valley View Cemetery, Ticonderoga.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Northampton Library (for the purchase of "Large Print" books), care of Karen Lawler, 16 Chelsea Circle, Richboro, PA 18954.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet & Son, Delhi.

Howard McKnight

SIDNEY — Howard J. McKnight, 85, of 200 Fox St., Senior Village, Sidney, and formerly from Mount Upton, passed away Saturday afternoon, Nov. 2, 2002, at The Hospital in Sidney.

He was born Sept. 29, 1917, in Glenolden, Pa., the son of the late James and Katherine Matthews McKnight.

He was predeceased by is wife, Marguerite McKnight, July 14, 1998; and a son, John McKnight, Nov. 6, 2001.

He is survived by a loving daughter, Barbara Johnessee, York, Pa.; three stepsons, Patrick Casey, Nichols, Peter Casey, Tobyhanna, Pa., and Dennis Casey, state of Florida; two stepdaughters, Mary Ann Weidman, Mount Upton, and Jackie Phillips, West Palm Beach, Fla.; four grandchildren; and 12 stepgrandchildren.

Howard was predeceased by one stepgrandchild.

He worked as a roofing contractor in Philadelphia, Pa., a superintendent of the Bromley House, West Oakland, Pa., and a security officer at Pocono Manor, Tobyhanna, Pa. Howard was a notary in Florida.

He was a member of AARP and the St. Luke's Lutheran Church, Sidney.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2002, from St. Luke's Lutheran Church, Sidney, with the Rev. James Vargo, pastor, officiating.

Burial will be at the convenience of his family.

Friends are invited to call from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. services on Wednesday at the church.

Memorial gifts may be directed to the St. Luke's Lutheran Church, 139 West Main St., Sidney, N.Y. 13838.

Arrangements are under the direction of the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

John F. Ford

MARGARETVILLE — John F. Ford, 72, of Margaretville, passed away on Friday, Nov. 1, 2002, at the Margaretville Memorial Hospital, Margaretville.

He was born April 21, 1930, in Brooklyn, the son of John Ford and Katherine Foster.

He married Florence Rice on Dec. 2, 1950, Brooklyn.

He worked as a butcher for Figies Butchering in Brooklyn. After moving to the area he worked for Daitch Dairies in Roxbury, Baileys Furniture business in Fleischmanns and Margaretville Memorial Hospital.

He was a past commander of the American Legion Post No. 216, Margaretville, and also active in the V.F.W. in Fleischmanns. He was a member of the Sacret Heart Parish, Margaretville.

He is survived by his wife, Florence Ford, Arkville; his son, John W. Ford; one daughter, Ellen M. Hanley; seven grandchildren; one godson, Richard Bock; niece, Patricia Pellegrino; several nieces and nephews; and one great-grandchild.

He was predeceased by two sisters, Janet Falco and Margaret Nickoletti.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 8, 2002, at the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville, with the Rev. William Gorman officiating.

Committal services will be private.

Calling hours will be from noon until service time on Friday at the funeral home.

Funeral arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Margaret Weiss

STAMFORD — Margaret Weiss, 101, died Saturday, Nov. 2, 2002, at Robinson Terrace in Stamford.

Friends may call at the Hall Funeral Home, 40 Main St., Stamford, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2002.

Funeral services will be at the funeral home at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2002, with the Rev. Waylen Bray officiating.

Interment will follow at the Lutheran Cemetery, Middle Village, Queens.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford, under the direction of William A. Tari.

Muriel Whiteman

ONEONTA — Muriel L. Whiteman died Nov. 2, 2002, in Oneonta.

Muriel was born Jan. 10, 1922, in Brooklyn, the daughter of Rolf and Emma (Greene) Lundholm. She was raised on a farm in East Springfield.

Muriel was retired from Bendix Corp., Sidney, where she was a supervisor in Receiving Inspection.

She was a member, elder and choir member of the First Presbyterian Church of Oneonta. She was also an active member of the Royal Rebekah Lodge No. 161 and a state PAM for New York. She was also a member of the Oneonta Business Woman's Club.

Muriel is survived by her only child, Jean, and her husband, James, Sawyer; her two very special grandchildren, Jane E. Pidgeon and her companion, Jim Tomaino, and John E. and wife, Penny, Sawyer; four great-grandchildren, Ryan and Matthew Pidgeon, Emily Sawyer and Brandon Hansen; brother, Ralph Lundholm; sister, Louise Fontaine; sister-in-law, Sarah W. and husband, Ernie Thornborough; and six nieces, one nephew and several cousins.

Predeceasing her were her parents and her best friend and companion, Paul D. Moore.

Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 8, 2002, at the First Presbyterian Church, 296 Main St., Oneonta. Committal will follow at the Oneonta Plains Cemetery. The family will be at the church 30 minutes prior to the service.

Memorial donations may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, 296 Main St., Oneonta, NY or the Oneonta Plains Cemetery, 162 County Highway 58, Oneonta, NY 13820.

Arrangements are under the direction of Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Charlotte J. Flint

CHERRY VALLEY — Mrs. Charlotte Janet Camp Flint, 98, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Nov. 3, 2002, at The Meadows, Cooperstown, where she was a resident.

She was born June 4, 1904, in Buel, the daughter of Frederick and Grace (Moore) Porath.

She married Claude J. Camp in Cherry Valley on Aug. 18, 1921. He predeceased her on Feb. 4, 1967. She later married William O. Flint in Cherry Valley on July 1, 1979. He predeceased her on Sept. 23, 1984.

Mrs. Flint had worked for the Cherry Valley Baseball Shop and as a chambermaid for Brazilian Court, Palm Beach, Fla., before retiring in 1989.

She was a member of the Cherry Valley Rebekahs.

Survivors include five daughters, Eleanor (Raymond) Brodie of Middleburgh, Florence Harias of Illinois, Claudine C. Haig of Cherry Valley, Janet (Brian) Hoteling of Rochester and Brenda (William) Hildenbrand of North Carolina; 24 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren; 15 great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her son, Claude A. Camp; daughter, Harriet Kenyon; a grandson, Randy Brodie; granddaughter, Debra Drake; two sisters, Elsie Smith and Bertha Baldwin; and four brothers, Donald Porath, Fred Porath, Robert Porath and Clarence Porath.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 8, 2002, at the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley, with the Rev. Ron Fralick officiating. Burial will follow in the Cherry Valley Cemetery, Cherry Valley.

Calling hours will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 7, 2002, at the funeral home with a Rebekahs service at 8 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mrs. Flint's memory may be made to the activity fund, care of The Meadows, Cooperstown, N.Y. or the charity of the donor's choice.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Franz Luettger

FLEISCHMANNS — Franz Luettger, 68, passed away Nov. 4, 2002, at the Margaretville Memorial Hospital, Margaretville.

Franz loved his family dearly and was quick to lend a helping hand and provide support.

He was born on June 7, 1934, in Germany, the son of Franz and Ilse (Arlt) Luettger.

His first marriage was to Elke Schumacher in 1956. She died Feb. 22, 1994. His second marriage was to Inge Theilke on March 28, 1998, in Margaretville.

Franz worked as a masonry foreman on Long Island before forming his own general contracting business. He was a craftsman and took great pride in his work.

He moved to Fleischmanns in 1979 from Long Island.

He attended the United Methodist Church, Margaretville.

He was a member of the Kingston Maenner Chor Damechor Club, the German-American Club of the Upper Catskills and the Esopus Fish & Game Club.

He was a past president of the National Home Builders Association and Fleischmanns Rotary Club, past member of the Board of Directors of the Margaretville Memorial Hospital and former Scoutmaster for Troop 399 on Long Island.

Franz loved the outdoors, enjoying hunting and bird watching. Soccer was his favorite sport playing and watching.

He is survived by his wife, Inge Luettger, Fleischmanns; three sons and daughters-in-law, Frank and Lynn, Virginia, Ronald and Doree, Oneonta, and Mark and Michele, Otego; one daughter, Ramona, Oneonta; nine grandchildren, Erica, Matthew, Kristin, Kenny, Christopher, April, Laura, Cody and Justin; two stepchildren, Floyd and Mark Glaess; one sister, Gisela of Germany; and his companion, Duke, his dog.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 6, 20002, at the United Methodist Church, Margaretville, with the Rev. Gary Bonebrake and the Rev. Joon Woo Lee, officiating.

Burial will be in Clovesville Cemetery, Fleischmanns.

Calling hours will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2002, at the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Contributions in Franz Luettger's memory may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Arrangements are by Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Margaret Weiss

STAMFORD — Margaret Weiss, 101, of  Jefferson Road, Stamford, and recently of Robinson Terrace in Stamford, passed away at approximately 11:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 2, 2002.

She was born Aug. 23, 1901, in Brooklyn, the daughter of Louis Matecki and Anne Kloss.

She married Otto J. Weiss in 1921, in Middle Village, Queens.

She was a widow. She lived on Long Island until 1970, when she moved to Stamford.

She was an avid lover of bingo games at the Stamford V.F.W. She loved music, especially the songs of Elvis Presley.

She is survived by her son, Roger Weiss of  Jefferson Road, Stamford; and her daughter, Marion Denton of Los Angeles,  Calif.

She was predeceased by her husband, Otto; and sons, Robert and William Weiss; and a grandchild, Henry Denton Jr., of Lynbrook.

Friends may call at the Hall Funeral Home, 40 Main St., Stamford, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2002

Funeral services will be held at the funeral home at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2002, with the Rev. Waylen Bray officiating. Burial will be in the Lutheran Cemetery, Middle Village, Queens.

Flowers, or contributions may be made to Catskill Area Hospice.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford, under the direction of William A. Tari.

Anna Marie Hans

NORWICH — Anna Marie Hans, 89, of Norwich and formerly of Sidney, passed away Sunday, Nov. 3, 2002, at the Valley View Manor Nursing Home in Norwich.

She was born Sept. 12, 1913, daughter of the late Charles and Marie Fritcher Hausler in Manhattan.

Anna married Paul Otto Hans. He predeceased her on Oct. 30, 1974.

She was a registered nurse and was employed by the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City.

She is survived by her nephew, Carl G. Koegler, Quinton, Va.; and her niece, Madalyne Rossner, Greenbrook, N.J.

Two sisters, Josephine Koegler and Olga Stack; and nephew, Leo L. Koegler, predeceased her.

Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 8, 2002, at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, with the Rev. Fr. Gordon Polenz of Sacred Heart Catholic Church officiating.

There will be no visitation.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Delaware Valley Humane Society, P.O. Box 182, Sidney, N.Y. 13838.
