Alfred Nunz

8/17/2004 - Alfred P. Nunz, 76, of 220 Schuyler Ave., Apt. 6, died at 1:30 p.m. Monday (Aug. 16, 2004) in his home. He was born Nov. 5, 1927, in Buffalo, the son of Alfred P. and Mildred Kopper Nunz.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy. He was self-employed, owning several businesses in the Jamestown and Buffalo areas, including Stewart Sandwiches and Coffee in Buffalo, retiring in 1994 due to illness. He was a member of the Mason Hiram Lodge 0105, the Lodge Council Chapter Consistory Scottish Rite Bodies in the Valley of Jamestown, past president of the Ismailia Oriental Band of Buffalo, and the American Legion Post 1286 of Lakewood. He was also a member of Trinity United Methodist of Buffalo.

Alfred was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was loved by all who knew him. What will be missed the greatest is his keen sense of humor and his vivacious personality. He was a avid Buffalo Bills and Buffalo Sabres fan, and held Bills' season tickets when their home was War Memorial Stadium.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Marie A. Sampson Nunz of Jamestown; a son, Mark A. Nunz of Acworth, Ga.; two daughters: Kathleen Muntz of West Ellicott and Julie Nunz Weilacher of Columbia, S.C.; eight grandchildren: Jason, Matthew and Nathan Nunz, all of Acworth, Melissa Sweeney of Ashville, Samantha and Alyce Muntz of West Ellicott, Mollie Weilacher of Tonawanda and Allyn Weilacher of Columbia; three great-grandchildren; and a sister, Diana R. Zorich of Buffalo.

The funeral service will be at 1:45 p.m. Wednesday in Trinity United Methodist Church in Buffalo. The Rev. Wesley Showers will officiate. Burial will be in Elm Lawn Cemetery, Buffalo.

No visitation will be observed.

Alfred Vanstrom

9/17/2004 - GERRY - Alfred S. Vanstrom, 87, formerly of Mud Creek Road, Kennedy, died at 3:45 a.m. Thursday (Sept. 16, 2004) in Heritage Village Health Care Center. A lifelong area resident, he was born Aug. 23, 1917, in Jamestown, the son of E. Albert and Florelle Stone Vanstrom.

He was a graduate of Falconer High School. In earlier years, he was employed as a tool and die maker by HyGrade Tool Co., the former Proto Tool Co. as tool room foreman, and later by Arro Tool & Die Co., retiring in 1979. He also owned and operated a small dairy farm on the Mud Creek Road, and was a member of the Kennedy United Methodist Church.

He is survived by three daughters: Elaine Marie Campbell and Ruth Rowley, both of Kennedy, and Janis Stolarski of Elma, N.Y.; four sons: David and James Vanstrom, both of Falconer, Stephen Vanstrom of Jamestown and Thomas Vanstrom of Kennedy; 21 grandchildren: James Campbell, Joanne Spunaugle, Kirk and Keith Vanstrom, Victoria Rishell and Julie Vanstrom, all of Jamestown, Kimberly Sharum of Houston,  Texas, John Vanstrom of West Ellicott, Kelly Fato of Laurel, Md., Elizabeth Vanstrom of Erie, Emily Vanstrom of Slippery Rock, Pa., Carrie Rowley of Fayetteville, N.C., Mark Rowley, Eric, Sandra, Timothy and Jeanette Vanstrom, all of Kennedy, Erin Vanstrom of Rochester, and Ellen, Adrianna and Philip Stolarski, all of Elma; eight great-grandchildren; a brother, Donald Vanstrom of Jamestown; and two sisters: Vivian Colander of Jamestown and Carol Gill of Elmira.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen E. Baker Vanstrom, whom he married Dec.18, 1937, in Jamestown, and who died Jan. 21, 1991; a son, Rodney Vanstrom, who died Jan. 20, 2003; and a brother, Roger Vanstrom who died in 1929.

The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Falconer Funeral Home. The Rev. Lee A. O'Brien, pastor of Clarks Corners Community Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Myrtle Cemetery, Clarks Corners.

Friends will be received by the family from 7 to 9 p.m. today and for one hour prior to the service Saturday in the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the Rodney A. Vanstrom Scholarship Fund, c/o of the Chautauqua Region Community Foundation, 418 Spring St., Jamestown, N.Y., 14701; or the Kennedy Free Library, Kennedy, N.Y., 14747; or to a charity of choice.

Alice Dinger

12/6/2004 - PLEASANTVILLE TOWNSHIP, Pa - Alice P. Dinger, 89 of 1410 Grunderville Road, died Friday (Dec. 3, 2004) in the Rouse-Warren County Home, Youngsville. He was born July 27, 1915, in Goheenville, Pa., the daughter of Robert C. and Edith Early Galbraith.

She had been employed by the former New Process Company (Blair) for 25 years, and retired from Merchandise Handling Department in 1976.

She very much enjoyed her hobbies of playing cribbage, dominoes, crossword puzzles and crafts.

She is survived by her husband of 69 years, James H. Dinger whom she married Oct. 6, 1935, in Kittaning, Pa.; two daughters: Patricia Phillips of Fallscreek, Pa., and Virginia Nelson of Tidioute, Pa.; six grandchildren and many great-grandchilden and great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, June DuBrock who died in 1982; two grandchildren; a great-grandson; two brothers; and a sister.

The funeral service will be held noon today in the McKinney Funeral Homes and Cremation Services Inc., 54 West Main St., Youngsville. The Rev. Don Wells, will officiate.

Allen Harris

10/10/2004 - ERIE - Allen C. Harris, 66, of 10 Stearns Ave. died Friday (Oct. 8, 2004) in Hamot Medical Center, Erie. He was born Sept. 23, 1938, in Jamestown, a son of the late John N. and Alverta Casler Harris.

A graduate of Jamestown High School and Jamestown Community College, he had attended the University of Michigan and was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, serving from 1961 to 1965.

He had formerly been employed as an accountant for the Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. in New York City.

He is survived by a brother, Robert N. Harris of Jamestown.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

A committal service will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Sunset Hill Cemetery. The Rev. Dennis  Johnson will officiate.

No calling hours will be observed.

Allen Nelson

10/12/2004 - KANE, Pa. - Allen G. Nelson, 94, of the Kane Lutheran Home, formerly of Falconer, and western North Carolina, died at 2 a.m. Sunday (Oct. 10, 2004) in Kane Community Hospital. He was born Aug. 11, 1910, in Ludlow, Pa., the son of Axel and Emma Hildegard Nelson.

He was a 1929 graduate of Ludlow High School and took an aviation ground school course from Colonial Flying Services at the Univeristy of Buffalo in 1929. He attended Lock Haven State Teachers College where he earned a masters degree in education in 1934. His teaching career started in the Russell school system in 1934, following the war, he served as junior high school principal in Lenoir, N.C. from 1948 to 1956, and retired in 1958 from the Falconer school system.

He was a veteran of World War II serving with General Patton's 3rd Army, 304th Infantry Regime, 76th Division in Luxemborg and Germany. He earned the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with three bronze stars. He had been employed as an educator and principal in several school districts. He was a member of Moriah Evangelical Lutheran Church and the James Uber Post 489, American Legion.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Ethel Anderson; and two brothers: Melvin A. and Edmund R. Nelson.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in the Moriah Evangelical Lutheran Church, Ludlow. The Rev. Donald Coslow of Moriah Evangelical Lutheran Church and the Rev. John Nelson of Mission Covenant, will officiate. Burial will be in Moriah Lutheran Cemetery, Ludlow.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association; or the American Red Cross; or the Kane Public Library.

Arrangements are by the Borden-Lloyd Funeral Home.

Allene B. Montgomery

3/31/2005 - Allene B. "Kelly" Montgomery, born January 13, 1933, died peacefully on Good Friday, March 25, 2005, following a lengthy and courageous battle with Alzheimer's Syndrome. Allene was born in Buffalo, N.Y., and was raised with her four brothers and sister in Ashville, N.Y. She was married for 17 years to James B. Montgomery, and raised their three sons between Green Bank and Linwood, N.J.

Allene was a very dynamic, creative and industrious woman who loved entertaining, gardening, refinishing antique furniture, playing piano and baking. She was most notorious for becoming one the very first licensed "Lady Barbers" on the East Coast in the mid-sixties. It was rumored that Ringo Starr actually sneaked into the Haddon Hall Hotel in Atlantic City to have his "mop-top" trimmed by the famous lady barber. Her three sons put up quite a struggle as young boys as their mother got them dressed up for Sunday school, but she would be proud to know that they are still following the Lord as adults today. Her zest for life and hard work was unfortunately cut short by the onset of Alzheimer's in 1996. The family wishes to gracious thank the loving and caring staff at the Pacific Coast Care Center in Salinas for the care of their mother during her residence there.

Allene was preceded in death by her parents, Milton and Mildred Bergman and her brothers: Victor and Dale Bergman. Allene is survived by three sons: Curtis and his wife, May and their daughters: Karina and Kristen in Salinas, CA; James and his wife, Suzanne and their daughter, Claire in Egg Harbor Twp., N.J., Kevin and his wife, Terri Jo and their children: Megan and Blaze in Boise, ID; her brother, Jarold and his wife, Carole in Ashville, N.Y.; her brother, Bruce and his wife, Nancy in Harmony, PA; her sister, Carol Carpenter in Jamestown, N.Y., as well as many nieces and nephews.

Private inurnment has been held with arrangements through STRUVE AND LAPORTE FUNERAL CHAPEL. A small family gathering will be held Sunday.

Alta Elizabeth "Betty" Walrod Moon

1/25/2006 - Alta Elizabeth "Betty" Walrod Moon, 84, died Monday, Jan. 23, in the Greenhurst Nursing Home. She was born May 28, 1921, in Clarks Corner, N.Y., a daughter of Albert Clinton and Maude Louella Holmes Walrod. During World War II, she drove city bus in Jamestown, and loved to tell how she got back at some factory workers who taunted her for "doing a man's job." She was very artistic and owned her own flower shop, Alta's House of Flowers, in Frewsburg. She had also worked for  Johnson Florist and Lakeview Gardens. She was very interested in her family genealogy. Before her illness, she worked extensively with injured and displaced birds. She was a member of the Audubon Society and taught nature classes at some of their youth camps.

She is survived by a daughter, Sandra Kay (Lanphere) Tellinghuisen of Jamestown, a stepson, Robert Moon, also of Jamestown; four grandchildren: Jerry Andrew Tellinghuisen (Tammara), Brenda Lee Tellinghuisen Gustafson (Norman), Randy James Tellinghuisen (Elisabeth) and Roger Alan Tellinghuisen (Amy); 14 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George Jeffrey Moon Jr.; an infant daughter, Louella Ann Lanphere; a stepdaughter, Sandra Lee Moon; a granddaughter, Becky-Kay Sweatman; six sisters: Ella N. Becker, Lucy C. Wallace, Alta E. Debell, for whom she was named, Cecil V. Johnson, Rhea R. Wick and Alberta M. Price; and two brothers: Stanley A. and Fred A. Walrod.

The funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday in the Peterson Funeral Home, Frewsburg. The Rev. Dayle Keefer, pastor of the Fluvanna Community Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Myrtle Cemetery, Kennedy.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the Audubon Society.

Alyce L. Dorsett

9/8/2004 - WARREN - Alyce L. Dorsett, 85, formerly of Marienville, Pa., died Sunday (Sept. 5, 2004) in Warren Manor. She was born Nov. 27, 1918, the daughter of Charles and Bessie J. Hapinger Cussins.

In early years, she had been employed by the Knox Glass Co. of Marienville and later as a home care aide for the Office of the Aging. She was also a volunteer at the Snyder Memorial Home.

Surviving are a daughter, Jane Dorsett Covert of Coraopolis, Pa.; a son, Tim E. Dorsett of Warren; five grandchildren: Kristian Covert of Sharpsville, Pa., Kayla Covert of Moon Township, Pa., Erin Dorsett Napolitan and Cara Dorsett, both of Warren, and Deana Dorsett of Carnegie, Pa.; two great-granddaughters; and two sisters: Leora Silvis and Esther McDonald, both of Marienville.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Delmar E. Dorsett, whom she married on Aug. 18, 1945, and who died Nov. 11, 1985; an infant grandson, Jason Robert Covert, in August 1979; two brothers: Gerald and Nathan Cussins; and four sisters: Ruth Schrecengost, June Hulings, Doris Hetrick and Lenore Weber Mullin.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. today in the Ronald McDonald Funeral Home, Marienville. The Rev. Dan Richter will officiate. Burial will be in North Forest Cemetery, Marienville.

Andrew Voldenberg

12/22/2004 - LITTLE VALLEY - Andrew Voldenberg, 84, of Route 242, Little Valley, died Monday (Dec. 20, 2004) in WCA Hospital. He was born Jan. 6, 1920, in New York City, the son of Christopher and Frances Kopolski Voldenberg.

Mr. Voldenberg loved horses, rodeos and auctions.

He is survived by his caregiver of 30 years, Christine Kaltenbach of Little Valley.

The funeral service will held at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Mentley Funeral Home Inc., 411 Rock City St., Little Valley. Burial will be in the Little Valley Rural Cemetery.

Angeline Paduano

7/11/2004 - Angeline D. Paduano, 81, formerly of 21 Flagg Ave., died at 1 a.m. Saturday (July 10, 2004) in the Heritage Green Health Care Center. An area resident all of her life, she was born July 17, 1922, in Jamestown, the daughter of Pasquale and Mary Palazzo Paduano.

She was a lifelong member of St. John Catholic Church.

Angeline loved serving and the company of her family, friends and neighbors. She will be remembered as a loving sister and was very special to her nieces and nephews, especially those nieces who saw to her needs.

She is survived by a sister, Margaret Newcomb of South Dayton; and two brothers, Patsy Paduano of Port Orange, Fla., and Norman Paduano of Ormand Beach, Fla.

A private family service will be held. The Rev. Joseph Gullo, pastor of St. John Catholic Church, will officiate. Inurnment will be in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.

Friends will be received at noon Thursday in the home of Angeline's niece, Mona Keul, 2886 Greenhurst Ave., Greenhurst.

Memorials may be made to a charity of choice.

Arrangements are by the Lind Funeral Home.

Anita Carlett

8/10/2004 - YOUNGSVILLE, Pa. - Anita Holcomb Carlett, 65, of 514 High St., died at 12:15 a.m. Monday (Aug. 9, 2004) in her home following a lengthly illness. She was born Dec. 29, 1938, in Warren, the daughter of the late Clayton "Bill" and Frances Smith Holcomb.

She was a 1956 graduate of Tidioute High School, where she was a former cheerleader. She had been employed by Youngsville HIgh School as a secretary in the library, and as a teacher's aid by the Pittsfield Elementary School. In earlier years, she was employed as a part-time cashier by Quality Markets in Youngsville, as a secretary by Starr Manufacturing and by the former Sylvania and Warren Components. She was a member of the Pleasant Valley Purple Red Hat Society, a social member of the Youngsville American Legion, and a member of the Saron Lutheran Church.

She was a devoted mother, wife, grandmother and enjoyed helping other children, and was affectionately called their adopted mother. One of her best joys was beach vacations and surf fishing in Florida, where she caught a 47-inch Black Fin Shark.

She is survived by her husband, William "Bill" Carlett, whom she married July 1, 1961, in Grand Valley United Methodist Church; a son, Robert Carlett of Ashville; two daughters: Vonnie Carlett of Palm Coast, Fla., and Suzanne Turner of Youngsville; four grandchildren: Katie and Nate Carlett, both of Ashville, and Zachery and Brodie Turner, both of Youngsville; and a sister, Janice Thompson of Garland, Pa.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Maxine Louise Holcomb, who died in 1945.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Saron Lutheran Church, Youngsville. The Rev. Mark Fischer, pastor, and the Rev. Nancy Schwanke will officiate. Burial will be in Youngsville Cemetery.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and one hour prior to the service Thursday in the Hubert-Lewis Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Warren County, 2 Crescent Park, Warren; or to the Saron Lutheran Church, West Main Street, Youngsville.

Ann Angelotti
11/2/02 - A lifelong resident of Warren County, she was the daughter of Peter and Philomena Fazio DeMarco.

She is survived by two daughters: Gloria Rostas of Warren and Joan Munella of Jamestown; two grandchildren: Jody Caldwell of Jamestown and Michael Munella Jr. of Pendelton, N.Y; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Angelotti.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in the Donald E. Lewis Funeral Home. The Rev. Walter E. Packard, pastor of St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church, will officiate. Interment will be in St. Joseph Roman Catholic Cemetery.

Friends will be received one hour prior to the service in the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to St. Joseph Church Educational Center Fund or the Warren County Humane Society.

Ann Brecht

8/11/2004 - RUSSELL - Ann L. Smith Brecht, 66, of 88 S. Main St., died Sunday (Aug. 8, 2004) in John Hopkins Medical Center, Baltimore, Md., following a short illness. She was born Nov. 14, 1937, in Warren, the daughter of the late Richard O. and Edna J. Nelson Smith.

A Warren area resident her entire life, she was a 1955 graduate of Warren High School and the Erie Beauty Academy. She had been employed in the deli department of Quality Markets. She was a member of the Sugar Grove AmVets and the Frewsburg American Legion.

She was an avid bingo player, cook, reader and loved her grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband, James T. Brecht, whom she married May 5, 1957, in the North Warren Presbyterian Church, North Warren; a son, Steven J. Brecht of North Warren; three daughters: Lisa J. LaBarte of Jamestown, Jodi A. Huey of Erie and Lori R. Summerson of Ellicott City, Md.; seven grandchildren; a brother, Richard N. Smith of North Warren; and two sisters: Jacqueline Cunningham and Joyce Brecht, both of North Warren.

The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Donald E. Lewis Funeral Home Inc. Burial will be in Warren County Memorial Park.

Friends will be received one hour prior to the service in the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the Russell Volunteer Fire Department.
