Helen A. Schwarze

GARRATTSVILLE — Helen A. Schwarze, 94, of Garrattsville and formerly of Williston Park on Long Island, died Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2002, at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

She was born Oct. 31, 1908, in Brooklyn, the daughter of Thomas and Donalda (Cote) McKeever.

She married George F. Schwarze on June 29, 1929. He predeceased her on Feb. 11, 1962.

Helen was a member of the Church of the Nativity in Edmeston.

She had previously been employed by Sperry Gryoscope in Great Neck as an analyst. After retirement she relocated to Garrattsville to live with her daughter and son-in-law.

Helen had a great love for all her family, spending many hours knitting, crocheting, or tatting beautiful sweaters and afghans.

She was also very proud of being a blood donor.

Helen is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Janet and Roger Nelsen; two grandchildren and their spouses, Peter and Sue Nelsen, and Sue and Tim Eschler; four great-grandchildren, Danny, Holly, Candance and Dana; her brother, Robert McKeever; and her sister, Dorothy Morganstern.

She was also predeceased by her sister, Donalda Ellsworth.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 16, 2002, at The Church of the Nativity, Edmeston, with Fr. John Burns officiating.

Calling hours are from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 15, 2002, at the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston. Burial will be at Hillington Cemetery following the funeral service.

Contributions may be made in Helen's memory to the Garrattsville Emergency Squad.

Myrtle R. Olmsted

ONEONTA — Myrtle R. Olmsted, 86, died Thursday, Nov. 14, 2002, in the Oneonta Nursing Home.

She was born Nov. 17, 1915, in New Lyme, Ohio, the daughter of Merle and Millie Hodge.

She married Mahlon Olmsted on April 3, 1938, in Milford Center. Mr. Olmsted predeceased her in 1980.

Myrtle was a resident of the Milford Center area her entire adult life and was active in the Milford Center Community Bible Church.

She also, was an avid golfer with the Senior League at the Cee Jay Golf Course, enjoyed needlework and sewing for her family and loved to cook and bake. Mostly a homemaker, Myrtle did work for a time at the Bresee's Health Bar in Oneonta and as a cook for the Portlandville Elementary School.

She is survived by her sons, Herbert and wife, Bonnie Olmsted of Milford, and Merle "Moe" G. and his wife, Linda Olmsted of South Hamilton, Mass.; daughter, Verla and husband, Michael Carter of Levittown, Pa.; sister, Julia Williams of  Jefferson, Ohio; brother, Lyle and wife, Elsie Hodge of New Lyme, Ohio; and sister-in-law, Bernice Hodge of New Lyme, Ohio; five grandchildren, Kevin, Randall, Joshua, Robert, Matthew "Scott" Olmsted; three great-grandchildren, Kevin C., Mikaela and Calvin Olmsted; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Besides her husband, Myrtle was predeceased by her brother, Fred Hodge; sister, Maebelle Otto; and her daughter-in-law, June Olmsted.

Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 16, 2002, at Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta, by the Rev. Steve Fournier officiating. Calling hours will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday evening, with the family in attendance.

Memorial donations may be made to the Milford Center Community Bible Church, 2582 State Highway 28, Oneonta, NY 13820.

Interment will take place in the spring at Milford Center Cemetery.

Arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Elizabeth Hawkins

NIAGARA FALLS — Elizabeth N. (Hebbard) Hawkins, 85, formerly of Cobleskill, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2002, in Mt. St. Mary's Hospital, Lewiston.

She was born in Milford on April 18, 1917, to the late Clarence and Adeline (Northrup) Hebbard and attended local schools there.

She worked at General Electric in Schenectady, during World War II, then in 1958, moved to Niagara Falls from Cobleskill.

In 1980, she and her husband, Harvey (Whitey) Hawkins, returned to Cobleskill, after his retirement. And then in 1992, she returned to Niagara Falls.

Elizabeth was a homemaker and devoted mother and grandmother.

She was predeceased by her husband on June 27, 1990.

She is survived by sons, Harvey M. (Elsie) Hawkins of Niagara Falls, and Jack R. Hawkins of North Tonawanda; sisters, Margaret Royal of Schenectady, and Gertrude M. Chamberlain of Oneonta; brother, Merton Hebbard of Franklin. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews. Dear cousin, of Ethel Spurbeck of Cobleskill.

She was predeceased by a brother, William Hebbard.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 16, at the Zajac Funeral Home, Inc., 319-24th St. Cor. Welch Ave., Niagara Falls, where funeral services will be held at 9 p.m. with the Rev. Robert Bellingham officiating.

Burial in Evergreen Cemetery in  Jefferson at the convenience of the family.

Contributions in her memory may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Funeral arrangements are by Zajac Funeral Home Inc.

Walter E. Denny

FRANKLIN — Walter Edwin Denny, 75, of Franklin, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2002, at his residence.

He was born Jan. 27, 1927, in Franklin, the son of William Harrison and Sarah Isabelle (McIntyre) Denny.

He married Thelma Fairbairn Denny on Aug. 28, 1949, in the Franklin United Methodist Church.

Walt served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, and was discharged as an Aviation Machinist's Mate Third Class.

After returning home from the service he attended Broome Technical Community College.

In 1988, he retired from Amphenol as a factory supervisor, where he worked for 36 years.

He was a member of the Franklin United Methodist Church, Franklin American Legion, Franklin Fire Department, the Ouleout Fish and Game Association, the National Federation of Sportsman, and the Way Back of Sundown Golf Club.

Walt had many interests, but especially enjoyed being with his family and friends, along with camping, fishing, hunting, trapping, golfing, in which he had a hole in one, and bowling, who along with his partner, Bob Ridell won the Rec Star Tournament several years ago.

He is survived by his wife, Thelma Fairbairn Denny, of Franklin; his children and their spouses, Michael and Susan Denny of Lockport, Arthur Denny of Franklin, Kathleen and Edwin Pickering of Mount Upton, and David Denny of Harpursville; his grandchildren, Aimee and Shannon Pickering, and Daniella, Christopher and Ethan Denny.

He is also survived by a brother and sister-in-law, William and Phyllis Denny of Franklin; along with several cousins.

A service to celebrate the life of Walter Denny will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 16, 2002, in the Franklin United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Dr. Lyle Linder, pastor officiating. Burial will follow in the Ouleout Valley Cemetery, Franklin, where the Franklin American Legion will accord military honors.

There will be no calling hours.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice or the Franklin Emergency Squad.

Arrangements are by the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin.

Millard Van Fleet

SODUS POINT — Millard Van Fleet, age 86, passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2002, at Rochester General Hospital.

Millard was predeceased by his wife, Margaret in 1978.

He is survived by his children, Lucinda (Donald) Miner of Sodus Point, Larry (Kathy) Van Fleet of Milford, Ohio, Jill (Paul) Skrupa of Syracuse, James Van Fleet, Trish Cerone-Howe, and Millard Van Fleet Jr., all of Rochester; 22 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; sister, Edith Voznick of Daytona, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

Millard was a former member of the Mount Upton Volunteer Fire Department and Emergency Squad and a member of the United Third Methodist Church of Sodus.

Friends visited from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, at the Norton Funeral Home, 45 W. Main St., Sodus.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 15, at the United Third Methodist Church in Sodus. A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. at the Maplewood Cemetery, Mount Upton.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Sodus Point Fire Department Ambulance Fund.

Marjorie R. Hodges

FRANKLIN — A memorial service for Marjorie Hodges, will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 16, 2002, at the Community Bible Church, Center Street, Franklin.

Family will receive friends following service.

Any memorial gifts may be given to Community Bible Church or Franklin Emergency Squad.

Richard R. Roach

UNADILLA — Richard Ronald Roach, 60, of Unadilla, died Friday morning, Nov. 15, 2002, in the comforting presence of his wife, Lorrie, daughter, Pamela, and brother Thomas at his residence.

He was born Aug. 15, 1942, in Walton, the son of the late Jerome and Anita Hawley Roach.

Dick was a graduate of the Walton High School Class of 1961 and from DeVry Institute of Technology in Chicago, Ill.

On Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 25, 1965, he married Lorrie (Leonore) Grein in Chicago, Ill.

He served his country in the U.S. Army from 1964 through 1966. From 1966 to 1972, he was employed by Motorola C&E. In 1972, he moved to Sidney, joining his parents and brother, Thomas in the family business, Style Shop. The family and business were named the Sidney Chamber Business of the Year in 1998. Dick enjoyed flying, auto racing, astrology and nature.

Dick was a member and a past president of the Sidney Rotary Club and Sidney Chamber of Commerce member and director. He was responsible for initiating the Music on Main Street program. Richard served as a village of Sidney trustee and was a member of the zoning board of appeals. He was chairman of the Greater Sidney Development Corp. and was a founding member of Vision 21 in Sidney. Dick was also a member of Fagan Flyers and the Charles L. Jacobi Post No. 183 American Legion in Sidney.

He is survived by his wife, Lorrie Roach of Unadilla; daughter, Pamela J. Roach of Unadilla; and two brothers, Thomas Roach of Walton and Jerome and his wife, Zoe, of Wellington, Fla. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 19, from the Sacred Heart Church in Sidney, with the Rev. Fr. Gordon Polenz, pastor, officiating.

Burial will follow in the Walton Cemetery in Walton.

Friends are invited to call at their convenience Monday at the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, at 21 Main St. in Sidney. His family will be in attendance from 5 to 8 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be directed to the Music on Main Street program of the Sidney Chamber of Commerce, 7-9 River St., Sidney, NY 13838; Vision 21, PO Box 2183, Sidney, NY; or to the National Colorectal Cancer Research Alliance, www.nccra.org.

Robert E. McNeilly

FRANKLIN — Robert E. "Bitter" McNeilly, 52, of Franklin died Sunday, Nov. 17, 2002, at his residence.

He was born May 18, 1950, in Cooperstown, the son of Robert and Rosalyn (Levene) McNeilly.

He married Susan E. Dresser on Nov. 3, 2001, in Franklin.

Bob was a 30-year member of IBEW Local 1249, and worked for Asplundh Tree Service, Landscape Foresters and, most recently, K.W. Reese, Inc.

He was an avid fisherman, hunter and especially enjoyed the special times camping with his family.

He is survived by his wife, Susan E. McNeilly of Franklin; his mother, Rosalyn McNeilly of Delhi; his children, Lucas and Ashley McNeilly of Franklin; two stepchildren, Jennifer Dutcher and her husband, Mike, of Franklin, and Benjamin Bonker of Franklin; a grandson, Carson Dutcher of Franklin.

He is also survived by his brothers, sisters, and their spouses, David and Debra McNeilly of Fayettsville, Ohio, Daniel and Sandra McNeilly of Auburn, Paul McNeilly of Marcellus, Roger McNeilly of Franklin, Richard and Jennifer McNeilly of Franklin, Phylis and Ralph Sitts of Franklin, and Kelly and Paul Nichols of Delhi; along with several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his father; and a brother, H. Orman McNeilly.

A service to celebrate the life of Robert E. McNeilly will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2002, in the Franklin United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Dr. Lyle Linder, pastor, officiating.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, 425 Main St., Franklin, at which time the family will be in attendance.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice or the Franklin Emergency Squad.

Arrangements are by the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin.

William Beardsley

AFTON — William C. Beardsley, 86, of state Highway 41, Afton, passed away Friday evening, Nov. 15, 2002, at the home of his son, Gene, in Binghamton.

He was born Sept. 20, 1916, in Coventry, the son of the late Ray and Mae Seymour Beardsley.

Bill was a graduate of the Afton Central School.

On April 14, 1946, he married Gladys M.  Johnson in Coventry. She predeceased him on Jan. 8, 1985.

Mr. Beardsley was a U.S. Army veteran, serving his country during World War II. He received two Bronze Stars for the North Solomons and New Guinea campaigns. On May 1, 1945, he was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries received on New Georgia islands.

He was a retired employee of the Borden's Chemical Co., Bainbridge.

He is survived by three sons, William R. Beardsley, Binghamton, Robert J. Beardsley, Somerset, N.J., and Gene A. Beardsley, Binghamton; two daughters and sons-in-law, June and Edward Junghans, Pleasanton,  Calif., and Barbara and Thomas Bogart, Guilford; two sisters, Mrs. Mildred Bailey, St. Petersburg, Fla., and Mrs. Imogene King, Ft. Worth,  Texas; seven grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by two sisters, Roberta Gardner and Barbara Smith.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 21, 2002, from the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, with the Rev. Norman Holtz, pastor of the Faith Bible Church in Oxford, officiating. Burial will follow in the Glenwood Cemetery, Afton.

Friends are invited to call at their convenience Wednesday at the funeral chapel. His family will be in attendance from 6 to 8 p.m.

Memorial gifts in his name may be directed to the Afton Emergency Squad, Afton, N.Y. 13730, if desired.

Virginia Zimmerman

STAMFORD — Virginia Zimmerman, 83, of Stamford, died Saturday, Nov. 16, 2002, in the Robinson Terrace in Stamford.

Mrs. Zimmerman was a lifelong resident, born in Summit.

She married Edwin Zimmerman in 1940, and together they participated in farming until their retirement.

She is survived by her two sons, Edwin J. Zimmerman and his wife, Genevieve, of Giboa, and Donald A. Zimmerman and his companion, Ellie, of Stamford; two daughters, Barbara Babcock and her husband, Robert, of Honeoye, and Betty Slater and her husband, Paul, of Winsted, Conn.; six sisters, Eva Tompkins and Patti Mattice of Hobart, Elsie Rockwell and Marg Barry of Stamford, Hilda Ferguson of Maryland, and Milly Holland, of Deposit; four brothers, Richard Mattice, Orson Mattice and Floyd Mattice of Stamford, and Benny Mattice of Hobart; 11 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2002, at Hall Funeral Home, 40 Main St., Stamford.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2002, in the funeral home, with the Rev. Lawrence Charles officiating.

Burial will be in the Fairview Cemetery, Grand Gorge.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford, under the direction of William A. Tari.
