Mildred L. Axtell

ONEONTA — Mildred L. Axtell, 87, of Oneonta, and formerly of Sidney and Unadilla, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2002, at A.O. Fox Memorial Nursing Home, Oneonta.

She was born on Feb. 1, 1915, in the town of Andes, the daughter of Walter and Jessie (Muir) Lunn.

She was married to Arthur J. Axtell in March of 1949. Mr. Axtell predeceased her in July 1969.

She graduated from the former Oneonta Normal School and for a few years taught elementary education in the Margaretville area.

While residing in Unadilla, she owned and operated a ceramic business.

Mildred is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Pei Yu Axtell of Rockville, Md., and John and Charlotte Axtell of Franklin; a stepson and his wife, James and Susan Axtell of Williamsburg, Va.; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her sister, Margaret (Peg) Marsh; and her brothers, Floyd and Ivan Lunn.

Relatives and friends may call at the Westcott Funeral Home, 123 Main St., Unadilla, from 4 to 6 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 22, 2002, when the family will be in attendance.

Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Sidney.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla.

Theodore R. Flemm

WORCESTER — Theodore R. Flemm, 84, died on Monday, Nov. 18, 2002, at Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown.

He was born April 2, 1918, in Newark, N.J., the son of Fritz and Catherine (Hermerson) Flemm.

He married Eleanore J. (Albert) Flemm on Aug. 11, 1984.

He is survived by his wife, Eleanore J. (Albert) Flemm; three sons, Ronald, James and David Flemm; and four grandchildren, Michael, Susan, Timothy and Victoria.

The family will hold private services at a later date.

Arrangements by E.J. Skinner Co., 155 Main St., Worcester.

Christy Schworm

EDMESTON — Christy M. Schworm, 32, of Edmeston passed away Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2002, at her home with her family by her side.

She was born Feb. 16, 1970, in Wareham, Mass., the daughter of Doug and Joy (Jones) Beeching.

A resident of Edmeston from the age of 2 1/2, Christy was a graduate of Edmeston Central School and Milford BOCES Nursing School.

Christy married Robert A. Schworm on Oct. 9, 1993.

Christy was a member of the First Baptist Church, New Berlin.

She was employed at the Edmeston/Burlington Health Clinic in Edmeston.

Her great smile, gentle touch and warm personality greeted everyone at the clinic, and will be greatly missed.

Christy is survived by her husband, Bob; and her two daughters, Kaylee, 6, and Brianna, 3. Her mother, Joy Beeching of Edmeston; her father, Douglas Beeching and his wife, Helen, of San Benito,  Texas; her sister, Connie McCarthy and her husband, Pat, of New Windsor; her brother, James R. Beeching and his wife, Theresa of Leonardsville; the entire Schworm family of Edmeston; and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

A private family service is being arranged by the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home of Edmeston at Christy's request.

In lieu of flowers, Christy requested donations be made in her memory to the Edmeston Rotary Club, P.O. Box 223, Edmeston, NY 13335, making it possible for the Rotary to continue to help others in need as they deem necessary.

Lois Ann Osborne

EFLAND, N.C. — Lois Ann Osborne, 63, of Efland, N.C., passed away Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2002, at her home after a lengthy illness.

She was born in Gilbertsville on May 25, 1939, the daughter of Donald and Dora (Richards) Osborne.

She is survived by her mother of Gilbertsville, N.Y.; a son, Steven and Susan Musson of San Diego,  Calif.; a daughter, Kimberly and Todd Broucksou of Efland, N.C.; two brothers, Donald and Cathy Osborne and Richard and Pat Osborne, all of Gilbertsville; one sister, Linda and Al Brooke of Phoenix, Ariz.; four grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.

Her father predeceased her.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 24, 2002, at the Presbyterian Church in Gilbertsville, N.Y., with the Rev. Dr. Donald Boardman officiating. Calling hours for family and friends will be from 1 p.m. until service time at the church on Sunday.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Presbyterian Church of Gilbertsville, N.Y.

Monte R. Domion

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Monte R. Domion, 59, of Gulf Road passed away on Sunday afternoon, Nov. 17, 2002, in Saint Elizabeth's Medical Center, Utica, with the comfort of his loving family at his side.

He was born on April 26, 1943, in Cooperstown, son of Janice Gaylord Domion and the late Phillip Sr. Domion.

A lifelong Richfield Springs resident, he was a graduate of Richfield Springs High School.

He was an honorably discharged U.S. Air Force veteran.

On July 10, 1965, he married Jean M. Oakes in Saint Joseph's Church, Richfield Springs. Together they owned and operated the Meadow Broke Dairy Farm in Richfield. Mr. Domion was also a seed dealer.

Monte was a hard worker and a devoted family man. He was an avid outdoorsman whose hobby was photographing wildlife. He had a fun-loving sprit and will always be remembered for his jokes and stories. His contagious laughter endeared him to everyone and he will never be forgotten.

He was a member of Saint Joseph's Church, Richfield Springs, a member of Farm Bureau and had served on the Richfield Town Planning Board.

Surviving besides his wife of 37 years, Jean, are two sons, Albert J. Domion of Richfield Springs and Adam J. Domion of Albany; a daughter, Monica M. Domion of Richfield Springs; his mother, Janice Domion of Easton, Pa.; two brothers, Phillip Domion Jr. and his wife, Bonnie, and James Domion and his wife, Kristin, all of Richfield Springs; four sisters and their husbands, Connie and Ray Nassar of Richfield Springs, Barbara and Fred Huyck of  Pennsylvania, Joan and Michael Lahr of  Texas, Jennifer and James Eggleston of Easton, Pa.; and several special nieces, nephews and many cousins.

Besides his father, two brothers, Eddie Domion and Lonnie MacIntosh, preceded him in death.

Funeral from J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 W. James St., Richfield Springs, on Thursday at 9:30 a.m. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. in Saint Joseph's Church Richfield Springs, with the Rev. Terrance Healy officiating.

The family was present at the funeral home to receive relatives and friends on Wednesday from 6 until 9 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to the Richfield Springs Emergency Rescue Squad. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Jack Northrup

UNADILLA — Jack (Tuffy) Northrup, 79, of Unadilla passed away Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2002, at the New York State Veteran's Home in Oxford.

He was born on Oct. 8, 1923, in Sidney, the son of George and Laura (Fitzgerald) Northrup.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy from 1942-1946.

He was a retired carpenter and mason and was formerly employed by Richard Wakeman General Construction Inc. of Sidney.

Jack has been a resident of Unadilla for 40 years and was an avid hunter, fisherman and enjoyed his many rides through the countryside.

He was a member of Sidney American Legion Post 183, Sidney Moose Lodge No. 277 and the Carpenters Local Union No. 258.

Jack is survived by Hilda, of Unadilla; a daughter and son-in-law, Jacqueline and Gary Dennis of Kirkwood; his brother, Gerald Northup and Stella of Unadilla; his grandchildren, Todd and Wanda Barnhart and Miranda Barnhart; two great-grandchildren, Jordynn and Brandon Barnhart; nieces and nephews; and his dog, Teddy.

He was predeceased by a grandson, Michael Barnhart.

Funeral and committal services will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 23, 2002, at the Westcott Funeral Home, 123 Main St., Unadilla, with the Rev. R. Michael Amos, pastor of the Fellowship Baptist Church, Unadilla officiating.

Burial will be in Evergreen Hill Cemetery, Unadilla.

Friends may call from 1 p.m. until the time of the service at 3 p.m. on Saturday, at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Unadilla Emergency Squad or the NYS Veteran's Home, Oxford.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla.

Catherine Vodapivc

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. — Catherine Ella Vodapivc, 84, formerly of East Worcester, N.Y., died Nov. 10, 2002, at the Life Care Center in Winter Haven, Fla.

She was born Nov. 10, 1918, in East Worcester, the daughter of Lynn and Ica (Conroe) Baldwin.

Mrs. Vodapivc was a homemaker and moved to Florida from East Worcester 24 years ago.

Mrs. Vodapivc was predeceased by her husband, Theodore Vodapivc; three brothers, Millard, Lee and Lester Baldwin; and a sister, Marian Williams.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Vodapivc was a member and past matron of the Order of the Eastern Star, Schenevus Chapter No. 138, a member of St. John's United Methodist Church in Winter Haven, Fla., East Worcester Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, and the Women's Club at the East Worcester United Methodist Church, where she was a Sunday School Teacher.

Burial will take place at the East Worcester Cemetery, 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 23, 2002. A memorial service will follow at 11 a.m. at the East Worcester United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ken Baldwin officiating.

Contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1599 Clifton Road NE, Atlanta, GA 30329.

Local arrangements are by the E.J. Skinner Co., 155 Main St., Worcester.

Janet Veen

HARPERSFIELD — Janet Veen, 65, of Harpersfield died Sunday, Nov. 17, 2002, at her residence.

She was born Nov. 22, 1936, in Nyack.

She worked diligently for Phoenix House, Belle Terre, in South Kortright, for 11 years.

She is survived by her husband, Edward Veen, of Harpersfield; one brother, Paul Demora of Nanuet; and a nephew, Thomas Donlan of Nanuet.

Friends may call at the Hall Funeral Home, 40 Main St., Stamford, on Friday, Nov. 22, 2002, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. The Rev. Anthony Ligato, will celebrate a Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday, Nov. 23, 2002, at 9 a.m. in Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in Stamford.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford, under the direction of William A. Tari.

Leon E. Wilson

COBLESKILL — Leon E. Wilson, 88, of Cobleskill died Thursday, Nov. 21, 2002, at Ellis Hospital in Schenectady.

Mr. Wilson was born April 14, 1914, in Warnerville and was a lifelong resident of Cobleskill. He was the son of Clarence and Ordella Walker Wilson.

He married Mildred Cary Wilson in 1955. She predeceased him in July 2002.

Mr. Wilson graduated from Cobleskill High School and attended Union College. He worked at General Electric Co. and was a U.S. mail contractor for 27 years. He was a licensed real estate broker and owner-operator of Leon E. Wilson Realty in Cobleskill. Mr. Wilson served on several village of Cobleskill boards and was mayor of Cobleskill from 1972 to 1986. He was president of the Cobleskill Rural Cemetery Association for many years and was also a licensed pilot.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Cobleskill, the Cobleskill Rotary and was secretary-treasurer of the Cobleskill Chamber of Commerce.

He is survived by three daughters, Barbara Rickard and Phyllis Tefft of Cobleskill and Patricia Hotaling of Milton, Vt.; three sons, Robert Wilson of Niantic, Conn., David Wilson of Cobleskill, and Larry Wilson of Hyndsville; two sisters, Gladys Righi and Elizabeth Wissenbach of Cobleskill; four brothers, Walter Wilson of Earlville, Leonard Wilson of San Antonio, Burdette L. and Lewis L. Wilson of Cobleskill; 31 grandchildren; 62 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandson; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a brother, William Wilson, in 1990.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 25, at the United Methodist Church of Cobleskill with the Rev. James Bowen officiating.

Interment will be in Cobleskill Rural Cemetery.

Friends may call from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 24, at the Robert A. Guffin Funeral Home at 108 Chapel St., in Cobleskill.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice on MacArthur Avenue in Cobleskill.

Arrangements are by Robert A. Guffin Funeral Home in Cobleskill.

L. William Banner

ITHACA — L. William Banner, 77, of Ithaca, formerly of Comstock Road, died on Monday, Nov. 11, 2002, at Cayuga Medical Center.

Bill was born in Oneonta, the son of the late Lester Banner and Lura M. Rich. He was the husband of Shirley A. Banner, whom he wed on Dec. 27, 1947, in Dewitt.

He was a World War II veteran and had graduated from the State University of New York at Oneonta in 1949 and did graduate work at Cornell University. He retired in 1981 after more than 30 years of service at the Ithaca City School where he was the assistant superintendent for business for well over 20 years.

His memberships included Rotary International, Elks, Kiwanis, the Hobasco Lodge, American Legion and numerous educational organizations. He also volunteered throughout the years as president of the Senior Citizens Council, treasurer, on the board of directors of MacGraw House and also as a Boy Scout leader. He was honored with the Paul Harris Fellow award.

He loved animals and had numerous hobbies and interests, including stamp-collecting and basket-making. At one time he was an avid fisherman, camper and gardener. Bill loved his family and was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.

Survivors include his wife of nearly 55 years, Shirley A. Banner; daughters, Susan Greer and husband John of Columbia, Md., and Nancy Banner and husband Glenn Humphrey of Phoenix, Ariz.; grandchildren, Emily Greer and Sean Humphrey; sister, Carol B. Miller and husband John of Lowville; nephew and nieces, Jonathan Miller, Melinda Miller-Widrick and Ellen Miller; great-nieces and great-nephews; several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews by marriage; cousin, Beverly Fraser of Oneonta; and numerous close friends.

A Celebration of Life Service was held at First Presbyterian Church, Ithaca, on Nov. 16.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Ithaca Dialysis Clinic, 201 Dates Dr., Ithaca, NY 14850 or Loaves & Fishes, 210 N. Cayuga St., Ithaca, NY 14850.

Betsy W. Hood

DELHI — Betty West Hood, 78, of Delhi went to be with Our Lord on Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2002.

She was born May 25, 1924, in Delhi, the daughter of Frank and Gladys (Howard) Brown.

Betty was a 1942 graduate of Delaware Academy, Delhi. As a child, she attended the one-room schoolhouse at Fitch's Bridge until sixth grade.

Upon graduation, she worked at Amphenol (formerly Scintilla) and Flack's Drug Store in Oneonta. She joined the U.S. Navy and graduated from Hunter College in New York City. After basic training she went to Bethesda Naval Hospital. Following her service in the Navy, she attended Wilfred Beauty Academy in New York City and worked at the Winter Garden Theater.

Upon her return to Delhi she opened her own beauty shop and also had shops in Denver and the Old Margaretville Hotel known as Kelly's. She had hair shows at Binghamton, Albany and Oneonta and had a hair style published in "Modern Beauty Shop Magazine." She was a member of the National Hairdressers Association.

Betty was a member of the First Baptist Church and a lifetime member of the American Legion Post 4190 and Disabled American Veterans. She was a member of the Naval Reserve and a former member of the Delhi Grange, Delhi Business and Professional Women and Rebekahs.

She enjoyed bowling and playing bingo. She also enjoyed parties in her backyard with family and friends.

Betty is survived by her husband of 37 years, John Hood, of Delhi; one daughter and son-in-law, Nadine (West) and Tim Shampine, of Delhi; a son Leonard West, of Delhi and son and daughter-in-law, Dennis and Mary Anne West of Delhi; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

One brother, Francis Brown, and one sister, Margaret Lee, predeceased her.

Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 23, at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi, with the Rev. Bert More of the Hobart Presbyterian Church officiating.

Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 22, with the family in attendance.

Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery, Delhi.

Contributions in her memory may be made to Delhi Fire Department and Emergency Medical Squad.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.
