Jane Eastman was a care-giver. When she married, she was in charge of a surgical floor at Memorial Hospital, Syracuse. She taught nursing education at the University of Bridgeport and practical nursing at Bullard Havens Technical School in Bridgeport. Nursing as a profession shifted to nursing in care of a growing family. In 1966 her widowed mother came to be part of her "care group," and was until she died in 1981. Then in 1985 her widowed father-in-law came to be "looked after" until he died in 1992.

When her husband was appointed superintendent of Hudson West District of The United Methodist Church, Jane was able to serve as district secretary, a paid position. Following the superintendency, the Eastmans served in Fairfield, CT and Farmingdale, NY. They retired in 1992 and returned to their childhood home in Oneonta.

Jane became an expert quilter, creating hand-pieced and hand-quilted works of art. These have been given to her children and grandchildren. She had two quilts in the 2002 Cooperstown Quilt show. She was a former co-chair for the Worship Commission at First United Methodist Church, and most recently served on the church's Staff Parish Relations Committee.

Although stricken with diabetes in 1998, which left her unable to walk, she became an inspiration to others as she attacked the task of building new strength in her limbs. She was faithful to her Health Links regimen until seized with a heart attack in September.

A service celebrating the life of Jane Gruver Eastman will be held at First United Methodist Church, Oneonta, on Saturday, November 30 at 2 p.m.
