Milton H. Loker
WALTON — Milton H. Loker, 91, of Fancher Avenue, Walton, died early Sunday, Nov. 24, 2002, in the Roscoe Community Nursing Home after a long illness.
Mr. Loker was born Nov. 11, 1911, in Rockland, the son of George and Carrie Dreher Loker.
He married the former Edith Tweedie, who survives, on Dec. 27, 1941, in Walton.
He was employed as a manager for The Fuel Service, Walton, and then Postmaster of the U.S. Postal Service at Walton for more than 20 years.
He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church of Walton for more than 75 years and served as an elder of the church. He was a charter member of the Club Royale, a 30-year-plus member of the Kiwanis Club, a past director of the New York State Solid Fuel Administration, 58-year member of Walton Lodge No. 559 FA&M former two-term trustee of the village of Walton and a former Village Justice, and ran unsuccessfully for mayor.
He was a victim of Polio, being stricken as an infant, and never let his disability become an issue.
He was a devoted family man, known for his integrity, and being a "determined German," and took pride in everything he did.
He is survived by his wife, Edith Loker; three daughters, Kay B. and Fred Tvrdik of Ft. Myers, Fla., Ann M. and John Ehrlich of Wayne, N.J., and Jean L. and Harry Loker-Solomon of Rochester; two sons, Gary and Linda Loker of Bayport on Long Island, and Mark and Patti Loker of Walton; one sister, Betty Foreman of Walton; three brothers, Charles Loker of DeLancey, Vincent Loker of Kerriville, Texas, and Donald Loker of Niagara Falls; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by two sisters, Florence Rogers and Beatrice Robinson; two granddaughters, Ashley MacNaught and Jeanette Solomon-Thomas, who died Nov. 16, of this year.
A calling hour will be from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2002, at the United Presbyterian Church, corner of North and East Street, Walton, where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., with the Rev. James F. Martin officiating.
Burial will be in Walton Cemetery.

Herbert VanBrink
COOPERSTOWN — Mr. Herbert (Tim) VanBrink, 82, passed away Sunday, Nov. 24, 2002, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.
He was born Aug. 19, 1920, in Salt Springville, the son of Frank and Mertie (Perkins) VanBrink.
On Dec. 19, 1953, he married Jean Vroman in Cooperstown, she survives.
Mr. VanBrink was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers from 1942-1946 in North Africa and France.
He worked for S.S. Harrison Fuel Oil and Springfield Central School before retiring in 1980.
He was a member of the American Legion Post 0579 in Cooperstown.
Survivors besides his wife, Jean VanBrink, of Cooperstown, include two daughters and sons-in-law, Robert and Shannon Prime of Richfield Springs, and James and Susan Wengenack of Duanesburg; two sons, Frank VanBrink of Somerville, N.J., and Bruce VanBrink of Cooperstown; a daughter-in-law, Barbara VanBrink of Pleasant Brook; sisters, Hazel and her husband, Charles Moyer of VanHornesville, and Marguerite Schorer of Ilion; seven grandchildren, Todd and Nathan Prime, Ashley, Courtney, and Teddy VanBrink, Jared and Alissa Wengenack; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2002, at the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley, with the Rev. Lyman Johnson, pastor of the United Methodist Church of Cherry Valley, officiating. Mr. VanBrink will be placed in the Ottman Funeral Home vault to await spring burial in the Springfield Center Cemetery, Springfield Center.
There will be no public calling hours.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mr. VanBrink's memory may be made to the Springfield First Responders, or the Cooperstown Emergency Squad.
Arrangements were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.
Ruth E. Thompson
EDMESTON — Ruth E. Thompson, 77, of Edmeston died peacefully Monday, Nov. 25, 2002, at St. Peter's Hospital in Albany with her family by her side.
She was born May 21, 1925, in Burlington, the daughter of Cass and Charlotte (Klock/Lytwynec) Sweet.
She outlived two husbands, Peter Pylinski of Edmeston, and Warren (Tony) Thompson of Gloversville.
Ruth retired as post master of the Burlington Flats Post Office on May 1, 1990.
She was also a 43-year member of the Wharton Valley American Legion Auxiliary Post 1311.
Ruth was a loving wife, parent, grandparent and friend, who found happiness with her family, friends, watching current events, and educational television as well as reading.
In her later years, she developed a love for Drew Carey and "Who's Line Is It Anyway?," which she enjoyed because they made her laugh and she loved to laugh.
She is survived by her brothers, Douglas Sweet of Richfield Springs, Wayne Sweet of Frankfurt, and Steve Lytwynec of California; her children, Jack Pylinski of Louisville, Ky., Kris Aparicio of Edmeston, Gretchen Belden of West Edmeston, Mark Pylinski of Honolulu, Hawaii, Toby Thompson of South New Berlin, Janelle Ross of Edmeston and their spouses; 16 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Calling hours will be held at Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home in Edmeston on Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2002, from 6 to 9 p.m. (with an American Legion Auxiliary service to be held at 7 p.m.) Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 27, at 1 p.m., with calling hours from 11 a.m. until the service.
Interment will be held at Edmeston Union Cemetery, Edmeston, following the memorial service at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations in Ruth's memory to the Edmeston Free Public Library.
Virginia L. Wessels
SIDNEY — Virginia L. Wessels, 86, of Sidney passed away peacefully Sunday, Nov. 24, 2002, at The Meadows Nursing Facility.
She was born Jan. 8, 1916, daughter of the late Emmor and Emma Eggert Reed in Center Township, Iowa.
Virginia married Neso D. Wessels on Nov. 20, 1934, in Aurora, Ill. He predeceased her after 62 years of marriage on Dec. 4, 1996.
Mr. and Mrs. Wessels owned and operated Sidney House of Flowers retiring in 1968.
Virginia was also a longtime member of the Sidney Chapter No. 255 Order of the Eastern Star and was a past matron.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Neso A. and Carol Wessels, Sidney; nine grandchildren, Michelle, Gretchen, Brent, Shan, Jason, Darcy, Gregg, Spencer and Andrea; and several great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins.
She is predeceased by son, Edward W.; daughter, Helene; three brothers, Victor, Edward and Harley; and sister, Evelyn Stewart.
Funeral services are private and at the convenience of the family.
Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery in Bainbridge.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Circle Drive Alliance Church.

Bertha M. Ward
CHERRY VALLEY — Mrs. Bertha M. Ward, 86, passed away Sunday, Nov. 24, 2002, at her home.
She was born Sept. 14, 1916, in Nicholasville, Ky., the daughter of Joshua and Bette (Perkins) Davis.
She was married to Alfred J. Ward. He predeceased her in 1990.
She attended the Cherry Valley United Methodist Church and was a member of the Cherry Valley Rebekahs.
She is survived by a daughter, Sonja L. Ward-Ough of Cherry Valley; special friends, Dr. and Mrs. James Brockway, Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Wilmot, all of Cherry Valley, and Mr. and Mrs. James Brewer of West Windfield.
A graveside funeral service, including Rebekahs' and burial, will be held in the Cherry Valley Cemetery, Cherry Valley, in the spring, with the Rev. Lyman Johnson officiating.
Contributions in Mrs. Ward's memory may be made to the Cherry Valley Emergency Squad, to whom a special Thank you goes to.

Jane Eastman
ONEONTA — A service celebrating the life of Jane Elizabeth Gruver Eastman will be held at the First United Methodist Church, Oneonta, on Saturday, Nov. 30 2002, at 2 p.m.

Randal Babcock
GUILFORD — Randal "Randy" Babcock Sr. went to be with the Lord on Tuesday evening, Nov. 26, 2002, at his residence after a long, courageous battle with cancer.
He was born Jan. 19, 1960, in Sidney, the son of Ralph and Mildred Heck Babcock.
On June, 4, 1988, he married Kathy Ives in East Sidney.
Randy enjoyed life to the fullest. He played football in his high school days. He graduated from Sidney High School the Class of 1979.
He was a mason, well-driller and contractor. Randy enjoyed stock car races and was a great fan of Mark Martin for years. Many friends and his family will miss him.
He was a great husband and father.
He is survived by wife of 15 years, Kathy Babcock of Guilford; two daughters, Jessica Ritchie and Ashley Babcock, both of Guilford; a son, Randy Babcock Jr. of Sidney; his parents, Ralph and Mildred Babcock of Sidney; two brothers, Ralph Babcock of Nashville, Tenn., and Brian Babcock of Sidney; mother-in-law, Sheila Davis of Guilford; two sisters-in-law and one brother-in-law, Bruce and Helen Ritchey and Beth Harvey, all of Unadilla; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral and committal services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 30, 2002, from the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, at 21 Main St. in Sidney.
Friends are invited to call from noon until services at 2 p.m. at the funeral chapel.
Burial will be later in the Prospect Hill Cemetery in Sidney.

Christian Martens
FLEISCHMANNS — Christian F. Martens, 80, of Fleischmanns passed away Nov. 27, 2002, at the Kingston Hospital in Kingston.
He was born on May 25, 1922, the son of Hans and Kathe (Wherman) Martens, in Hamburg, Germany.
He married Norma Jean Terwilliger on July 2, 1948.
Christian was a self-employed contractor and builder of the family-operated Delaware Court Motel complex. He also joined his father in the real estate business, where he became a licensed broker in New York state, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
Christian has lived in Fleischmanns since April 1926.
He was a past member of the Fleischmanns Fire Department, where he was an active member for many years. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Fleischmanns.
Christian is survived by his wife, Norma Jean Martens of Fleischmanns; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, A. Richard and Mary Terwilliger; cousins, Barbara Pfenning of Canada; special friends, Jesse and Kathy Wilbur of Fleischmanns; and nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 30, 2002, at the Hynes Funeral Home in Margaretville, with the Rev. Ralph Darmstadt officiating.
Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home.
Committal services will be held in the Clovesille Cemetery in Fleishmanns at a later date.
Contributions in memory of Christian F. Martens can by made to the United Methodist Church Memorial Fund in Fleischmanns.
Arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home of Margaretville.
Marguerite Carlson
UNADILLA — Marguerite Carlson, 85, of Unadilla passed away Monday, Nov. 25, 2002, in the Nursing Care Facility of The Hospital in Sidney.
She was born on Aug. 6, 1917, in Binghamton, the daughter of the late Elmer and Minnie (Muggulton) O'Halloran.
She was married to Herbert G. Carlson on June 20, 1942, in Oneonta. Mr. Carlson predeceased her on July 25, 2002.
She has been a resident of Unadilla since 1941, and was a former employee of Amphenol Corp. of Sidney.
She was a member and past matron of Eastern Star Chapter No. 179 of Unadilla, and served at one time as a grand officer.
Marguerite is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Kathie Carlson of Fremont, Ind.; her granddaughters, Melissa Harvey, Christine DiDonna and Katrina and Kristen Carlson; nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was predeceased by her daughter, Joyce DiDonna; and her brothers, Donald and Edward O'Halloran.
Memorial services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 30, 2002, at the Westcott Funeral Home at 123 Main St. in Unadilla, with the Rev. Michael J. Shank, rector of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Sidney, officiating.
Burial will be in Evergreen Hill Cemetery in Unadilla.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 12:30 p.m. until service time at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Unadilla Emergency Squad.
Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home of Unadilla.
Shirley E. Bell
DAVENPORT CENTER — Shirley E. Bell, 77, of Davenport Center passed away Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2002, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital.
She was born on June 23, 1925, in Davenport, the daughter of Newell and Esther Loucks.
She married George Bell on Aug. 21, 1943, in Gilbertsville. He died April 2, 1983.
Shirley was a resident of Davenport Center for the past 50 years.
She was employed by Hoffman's and Sawyer's Drycleaners for many years until her retirement.
Shirley was an avid walker taking long walks whenever she could.
She is survived by her children, Darryl Bell and his wife, Lisa of Clifton Park, a son, Trevor Bell of Davenport Center, a daughter Carol (Bell) Scherer and her husband, Milt of Sidney Center; her brothers, Kendall Loucks of Oneonta and Gordon Loucks of Colorado; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Loucks of Oneonta; six grandchildren, Jesse, Erin, Emma, Audra, Maggie and Lisa. Also, a very special friend, Barbara Utter of Davenport Center.
A graveside memorial service will be held in the spring in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Worcester.
There will be no calling hours.

Blanche M. Smith
GOSHEN — Blanche M. Smith, 77, a resident at the Orange County Residential Health Care Facility in Goshen, passed away Friday, Nov. 22, 2002, in the Orange Regional Medical Center at Horton.
She was born Aug. 23, 1925, in the Bronx, the daughter of the late Prospero and Antoinette Serpati Poloso.
On Nov. 7, 1942, she married Frank J. Smith in New York City. He predeceased her on Nov. 15, 1999.
Blanche was a retired saleswoman for Alexander's Department Store in Bronx.
She was a resident of the Delhi area for several years, before moving to Goshen to be near her son, Ronald.
She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Frank and Maryanna Smith of Stony Brook and Ronald and Rose Smith of Florida; and two grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 2, 2002, at the Ouleout Valley Cemetery in Franklin, with the Rev. Fr. Gordon Polenz, pastor of the Sacred Heart Church in Sidney, officiating. Friends are invited to call from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 2, 2002, at the C.H.
