Georgia R. Russell

SCHENEVUS — Georgia R. Russell, 97, passed away peacefully on Monday, Dec. 2, 2002, at the Ross Home in Maryland.

She was born April 21, 1905, in the town of Sidney, the daughter of George L. and Mary (Merwin) Ruling.

She married Lawrence H. Russell in Delhi on June 26, 1937. They were happily married for nearly 65 years. He predeceased her on Jan. 8, 2002.

Georgia was a beautician and operated Georgia's Beaute Studio in Delhi until her first child was born. She continued hairdressing at her home in Bloomville for many years.

She served as town clerk for the town of Kortright for several years.

She and Larry moved to Schenevus in 1960, where she was very active in the United Methodist Church.

She loved arts and crafts, and spent countless hours making gifts for her family and friends.

Georgia will be sadly missed by all who knew her.

She is survived by two sons, Howard and Joan Russell of Newman, Ga., and Wayne and Lela Russell of West Oneonta; her very special niece, Marian Poole of Guilford; one sister, Marion Miller of Denton, N.C.; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by four brothers; seven sisters; and her grandson, Timothy Russell of Newman, Ga.

The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday from the Heller Funeral Home, Schenevus, with the Rev. Thomas Snyder, pastor of the Schenevus United Methodist Church, officiating.

Interment will be held in Schenevus Cemetery, at a later date.

There will be no calling hours.

The family request contributions to be made to the Schenevus-Maryland Emergency Squad, 105 County Highway 34, Schenevus, NY 12155.

Arrangements are by the Heller Funeral Home, 25 Arch St., Schenevus.

Glenn Shackelton

WALTON — Glenn S. Shackelton Sr., 91, of Walton died Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2002, in the Delaware Valley Hospital in Walton.

Mr. Shackelton was born in the town of Tompkins, on Oct. 27, 1911, the son of Seymour and Nellie Phoenix Shackelton.

Mr. Shackelton married the former Emma Wilcox on Dec. 24, 1934, who survives. He was a dedicated husband and father who loved his family.

He was fiddle player, who played at many dances over the years. He was also a trapper and a life member and advocate of the National Rifle Association.

He was employed for 27 years at Bendix Co. of Sidney in the shipping department.

He loved farming and lived on his farm his whole life.

He is survived by his wife, Emma; two daughters, Carolyn S. Brown and husband, Doug of Truth Or Consequences, N.M., and Mareah E. Allen and husband, Richard of Walton; two sons, Glenn S. Shackelton Jr. and wife, Mickey of Walton, and Ben L. Shackelton and wife, Colleen of Walton.

He was predeceased by his brother, Clifford Shackelton.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 6, 2002, from the Clark, Winter & Courtney Funeral Home, Walton, with the Rev. Joe Bokel, chaplain at Countryside Care Center and Educational Missionary at New Life Bible College, Moscow, Russia, officiating.

There are no calling hours.

Burial will be in the Walton Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Delaware Valley Humane Society, 101 South Main St., Sidney, N.Y. 13838.

Opal J. Robinson

GUADELOUPE,  Calif. — Opal J. Robinson, 80, a resident of Guadeloupe,  Calif., since 1988, passed away peacefully Monday, Nov. 25, 2002, after a lengthy illness and is now with the Lord.

She was born July 23, 1922, in the town of Burlington, N.Y., the daughter of Renwic Hayes and Jennie (Jones) Welch.

Relocating from Upstate New York and originally settling in the San Diego,  Calif., area, Mrs. Robinson has been a resident of Santa Maria,  Calif., and Guadeloupe since 1981.

As a young woman, she worked in the Scintilla factory in Sidney, N.Y., during World War II.

She married Ralph E. Robinson on Jan. 17, 1947, in Edmeston, N.Y.

Opal was a devoted and loving mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin and friend. She will be missed for her strength, courage, love, kindness and her special smile no matter what. She inspired us all with her strong faith.

Opal is survived by her daughter and caregiver, Anne Molinari of Guadeloupe; granddaughter, Holly Molinari of Guadeloupe; two brothers, Gordon Welch of Lexington Park, Md., and Richard Welch of Utica, N.Y.; one sister, Nancy Figger of South New Berlin, N.Y.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Ralph E. Robinson (1993); and two brothers, Mahlon H. "Bob" Welch (1979), and Stanley P. "Paul" Welch (2002).

A memorial service to celebrate her life was held Saturday, Nov. 30, 2002, at the Guadeloupe Community Church. Pastor Don  Schmidt officiated.

Private interment will be in the San Juaquin Valley National Cemetery.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Dudley-Hoffman Mortuary in Santa Maria.

Donald A. Vrooman

JEFFERSON — Donald A. Vrooman, 71, of North Road died Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2002, at Robinson Terrace, Stamford, following an illness of eight months.

Mr. Vrooman was born in Stamford, on Jan. 12, 1931, the only child of Dow and Fanchon Dewell Vrooman.

He was a life long resident of  Jefferson and Blenheim. He attended the Blenheim Upper Village one-room school as a child, and graduated from  Jefferson Central School.

He was a member of the National Guard from 1951 until 1953, when he enlisted in the U.S. Army where he was a small arms repairman. He was in the U.S. Army Reserve until 1959, when he was discharged with the rank of Corporal.

Mr. Vrooman was employed by GE for many years.

Mr. Vrooman was a member of the Oneonta Radio Control Flyers and the Schoharie Valley Crop Dusters.

He is survived by first cousins, Jay Mattice, Gilboa, Ford Mattice, Indian Harbor Beach, Fla., Adelbert Vroman, Blenheim, Ronald Vroman, Gilboa, Dr. Jay Dewell, Cobleskill, Burdette Dewell, Ashland, Elizabeth Dewell, Windham, Dr. Robert Dewell, Cooperstown, Fanchon Dewell Cornell, Blenheim. Among several second cousins are Jay Edward Mattice of Gilboa and Lyndon Everett Cornell of Blenheim.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 5, 2002, at the Palmer and Shaylor Funeral Home, 134 River St., Middleburgh, where a funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 6, 2002, with the Rev. Frank Adams, pastor of the  Jefferson United Methodist Church, officiating.

A spring burial will be made in Breakabeen Cemetery, Breakabeen.

Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice.

Dorothy Minette

TROY, Pa. — Dorothy (Pat) Minette, 84, of Troy, Pa., and formerly of Oneonta, N.Y., passed away Monday, Nov. 25, 2002, at the Troy, Pa., Community Hospital, after a lengthy illness.

She was born June 4, 1918, the daughter of Herbert and Gertrude (Keller) Lister in Yonkers, N.Y.

She married William G. Minette on April 23, 1938, in Yonkers.

Pat and her husband owned and operated Lorenzos Motel in Colliersville until their retirement in 1980. She has been a lifelong area resident, except for 12 years with her husband after their retirement spent in Boca Raton, Fla., enjoying the game of golf, which they both loved.

She was a member of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Oneonta and a former member of the Oneonta Country Club and the Oneonta Elks Club BPOE 1312.

Pat is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Ronald and Dawn Minette of Oneonta, N.Y.; and a daughter and son-in-law, Jacki and Jon Olson of Halstead, Pa.; three grandchildren, Cheri and her husband, Dan Dougherty of  Johnson City, N.Y., Michael Olson of  Washington, D.C., and Michael Minette and his wife, Angela of Guilderland, N.Y.; four great-grandchildren, Jessica, Justin, and Cassidy Dougherty of  Johnson City and Gabriella Minette of Guilderland.

She was predeceased by Mr. Minette on June 10, 1992.

Private funeral services will be held Thursday, Dec. 5, 2002, at the convenience of the family at the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, Oneonta, with the Rev. Paul Roman, pastor of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Oneonta, officiating.

Burial will be later in the spring at Plains Cemetery, Oneonta.

There will be no calling hours.

Contributions may be made to St. Judes Children's Hospital, P.O. Box 318, Memphis, TN 38101.

Arrangements are by the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta, N.Y.

Donald Francisco

LODI — Donald Francisco, 70, of Lodi passed away Thursday, Nov. 21, 2002, at Clifton Springs Hospital in Clifton Springs.

Donald was born March 21, 1932, in Hamden, the son of the late Alton and Deetta Frost Francisco, and was a veteran of the Korean conflict, having served in the Army.

He was also a longtime dairy farmer in the Lodi area.

He is survived by his sisters, Hester Marshall, Arleen Crissell, Alma Georgia, Joyce Wilklow and Jean Critelli; brothers, Lyn Francisco and twin, Douglas Francisco; numerous nieces and nephews; and many dear friends.

His sister, Wanda Tuttle; and a brother, Vernon Francisco, preceded him in death.

Fritz Heinegg

DELHI — Dr. Fritz Heinegg, 88, a well-respected and longtime Delhi physician, passed away Wednesday night, Dec. 4, 2002, at his residence, following a brief illness.

The son of Franz (a Jewish banker who converted to Catholicism) and Louise (Koenig) Feilchenfeld, he was born Fritz Feilchenfeld on March 3, 1914, in Vienna, Austria.

Educated in Austria, Germany and Switzerland, he received his medical degree from the University of Vienna in 1939. Shortly afterwards, he escaped the Nazis and fled to America where he and his elder brother, Max, changed their name to "Heinegg."

On Oct. 26, 1940, he married Arlene E. Willis, who died Feb. 1, 1997, and later, Erika A.C. (Gamst) Baker, who survives, on July 14, 2000.

Dr. Heinegg practiced medicine in Brooklyn for 23 years before coming to Delhi in 1964, where he maintained a general practice until 1994, serving as Medical Director at Countryside Care Center until retirement in 1996.

Dedicated to humanity and the people of Delaware County, he also specialized in anesthesiology and obstetrics, delivering over one thousand babies; served on the staff at O'Connor Hospital; as school physician at Delaware Academy and SUNY-Delhi; and Assistant County Medical Examiner.

He was a member of the American Holistic Medical Association and the Otsego Sailing Club.

In addition to his wife, Erika; he is survived by his 10 children, Peter of Schenectady, Paul of Collegeville, Pa., Thomas of St. James, Louise Kavanagh of Rockville Centre, Andrew of Seattle, Wash., Philip (M.D.) of New Rochelle, John of Delhi, Maria Vitek of Potsdam, Catherine Fletcher of Delhi, and James of Montclair, N.J.; 23 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; foster children, Fred Feiler of Oneonta and Elizabeth Chi of Sweden; and stepdaughters, Adrienne Baker of Westville and Allison Stange of Cherry Hill, N.J.

Friends are invited to call 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 8, at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi, when the family will be in attendance, and Vigil service will be at 8:30 p.m.

A concelebrated funeral Mass will be offered at 11 a.m. Monday, at his late parish, St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church, Delhi. Presiding will be the Rev. Laurence Bourget, O.C.S.O. the Rev. Kevin Hunt, O.S.C.O. (both of St. Joseph's Abbey, Spencer, Mass.,) the Rev. James McDevitt, the Rev. Edward Ryan, the Rev. Jason Catania and the Rev. John Priest. Burial will follow in Woodland Cemetery.

Memorial contributions to Catskill Area Hospice will be appreciated.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet & Son, Delhi.

Doris L. Murphy

ONEONTA — Doris L. Murphy, 86, of Oneonta passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2002, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital.

She was born on Oct. 22, 1916, in Vermont, the daughter of William and Angie (Hunt) McNamara.

She married Howard F. Murphy on May 17, 1942, in Portlandville. He died on Aug. 18, 1982.

She was a graduate of Claremont High School in New Hampshire.

Doris had been a homemaker and a resident of the area for the past 60 years.

She is survived by her seven children, a son, Duane E. Wiltshire and his wife, Mary of Lakewood, Fla., a daughter, Maureen (Murphy) Raczkowski and her husband, Albert of Oneonta, a daughter, Linda (Murphy) All and her husband, Sherman of Oneonta, a daughter, Frances (Murphy) Brooks and her husband, Ronald of Gilbertsville, a son, Charles Murphy of Oneonta, a son Michael E. Murphy of Oneonta, and a daughter, Cynthia Murphy of California. Also surviving her are 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A service to celebrate the life of Doris L. Murphy will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2002, in the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. John Dougherty officiating.

There will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820 in Doris' memory.

Arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.

Donald A. Holcomb

ONEONTA — Donald A. Holcomb, 86, of Oneonta passed away Thursday, Dec. 5, 2002, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital.

He was born on Feb. 1, 1916, in Grand Gorge, the son of Homer and Ella (Loucks) Holcomb.

He married Geraldine Walters on Oct. 10, 1942, in St. Mary's Church in Oneonta.

A life long area resident, he worked for Oneonta Sales as a parts and service manager, a position that he held for over 50 years.

He was also a former life member of the Oneonta Elks Club.

Don was an avid gardener, but most of all was a loving and caring husband, father and grandfather and will be deeply missed by all that knew him.

He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Geraldine Holcomb, of Oneonta; his two daughters and their spouses, Mrs. Donna (Holcomb) Beers and her husband, John of Andes and Mrs. Judy Sobers of Oneonta; four grandchildren, Grace Healey of Delhi, Richard Sobers Jr. of Phoenix, Ariz., Donald Beers of Oneonta and Geri Lynn Sobers of Oneonta; two great-grandchildren, Bryant Beers and Mercedes Sawyer.

Four brothers, Claude, Norman, Walter and Byron also predeceased him.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 7, 2002, in the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Judy Thistle, A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital chaplain, officiating. Friends may call at the Bookhout Funeral Home from 1 until 3 p.m. at which time the family will be in attendance.

Arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.

James G. Nellis

OTEGO — James G. Nellis, 81, of Otego died Sunday, Dec. 1, 2002, at The Hospital, Sidney.

He had resided at the Riverview Adult Home in Otego.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 9, 2002, at the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris, with the Rev. Jeffrey Hupf of the Zion Episcopal Church officiating. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. on Monday until service time at 11 a.m.

Burial will be in Hillington Cemetery in Morris in the spring.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Melanie Jo Deyo

DAVENPORT — Melanie Jo Rifenbark Deyo, 46, of Davenport died Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2002, at the home of Amy and Ed Jeffers, of Davenport, following a lengthy illness.

She was born May 6, 1956, in Oneonta, the daughter of Virginia Rifenbark.

She married Kenneth W. Deyo on Sept. 4, 1982, in Windsor.

She graduated from Charlotte Valley Central School in 1974. After graduation, she moved to Binghamton with her sister Teddie, and while there she worked as a home health care aide. In later years, she returned to the Oneonta area working at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital for 12 years in housekeeping.

She moved to Kingsland, Ga., to be near her son and worked at Fleet Cleaners there. When she returned to Davenport, she worked at Wal-Mart, living with her niece and family, Amy and Ed Jeffers, until she passed away.

Melanie enjoyed life with her family and friends. She especially enjoyed reading, bowling, wrestling, the New York Yankees and NASCAR events.

Survivors include her sons, Jason Allen Rifenbark and his wife, Melanie Lynn Rifenbark, of Folkston, Ga., and Travis Joseph Rifenbark and his girlfriend, Amanda J. Temple, of Davenport; her husband, Kenneth W. Deyo; mother, Virginia Rifenbark; her dog, D-LO; and cat, Azrel.

Melanie also leaves two sisters and their families: Teddie Barber and daughter, Teresa Coolbaugh, and children, Shannon Harkenreader, Tamra Lippet, Christopher Werhenberg, Joshua Margiasso, and son, Paul and Heidi Barber, and children, Dylan and Kaityn Barber; and her sister Linda Swan and daughter, Amy and Ed Jeffers, and children, Emily Storey and Kristine Jeffers, of Davenport, Becky Ward and Mike Carr, and children, Bradley Wager and AshLynn Ward, of Davenport, and son, David Swan, and Donna Malakur and children of Laurens; and three brothers, Charles and Joann Rifenbark and children, Anna and Joseph Rifenbark of Davenport; and brother Horace (Buddy) Rifenbark and Carolynn and children, Matthew, Jennifer and Amber, and grandson, Brady Rifenbark; and brother James and Janet Rifenbark and children, Lisa and Ryan, Dillan Maker, Tracy and Frank Cobb and children, Gavin, Alexis and Heather Rifenbark.

She also leaves behind many friends and co-workers.

Memorial services will take place at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 14, at the Davenport United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Frank MacCracken officiating.

There will be no calling hours.

Contributions in her memory may be made to Catskill Area Hospice of Delhi or Charlotte Valley Central School Library Fund.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home of Davenport.
