Roland A. Martin

TROUT CREEK — Roland A. "Orvie" Martin, 79, of Trout Creek passed away Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2002, at Wilson Memorial Hospital in Binghamton.

He was born Oct. 7, 1923, in Charlotteville, the son of Harry and Nellie (Oliver) Martin.

He married Julia Bush on Aug. 1, 1964, in Walton.

Orvie was a star high school athlete at Deposit, lettering in football, basketball, track and baseball.

He served in the United States Army during World War II. He was a sergeant with Company K, 319th Infantry, participating in the campaigns of Northern France and Germany. Orvie was awarded the Good Conduct Metal and the Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster for wounds received in action Feb. 13, 1945, in Germany.

After returning home from the service, he was employed at the Rock Royal Creamery and then Borden's in Bainbridge, retiring after more than 20 years.

Orvie served as an officer in the Trout Creek (Guntown/Canonsville) American Legion Post, and was instrumental in establishing the Trout Creek Volunteer Fire Department, serving as secretary for 25 years.

Orvie was especially proud of landscaping his property and spent many hours manicuring his lawn.

He is survived by his wife, Julia Martin of Trout Creek; his daughters, Colleen and her husband, Gary Burlew, of Lowman, Micki and her husband, Norm Stull, of Horseheads and Brenda Martin of Glendale; and stepsons, David and his wife, Susan Fitch, of Unadilla, and Richard and his wife, Darlene Fitch, of Binghamton; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

He is also survived by his two sisters, Pauline Alberta of Ithaca and Dorothy Shelton of Trout Creek; his brother, William Martin of Walton; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by six siblings.

Friends may call on Saturday, Dec. 7, 2002, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Lyon Bros.-Way Inc. Funeral Home in Walton, at which time the family will be in attendance.

A service to celebrate the life of Roland A. "Orvie" Martin will follow at 3 p.m. at the funeral home with Pastor David Gatje of Trout Creek officiating.

Burial will be at the Walton Cemetery at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Trout Creek Fire Department and/or the Trout Creek Emergency Squad.

Arrangements are by the Lyon Bros.-Way Inc. Funeral Home of Walton.

Sara Jane Thayer

OTEGO — Sara Jane Thayer, 80, of Otego, passed away Thursday, Dec. 5, at A. O. Fox Memorial Hospital.

She was born on Sept. 18, 1922, in McDonough, the daughter of Charles and Mary Aiken (Howland) Oliver. She married Leland "Dynamite" Thayer on June 26, 1942, in Otego. He died on Sept. 24, 1993.

Sara was a homemaker on the family farm for more than 40 years. She was also a Sunshine Lady and a member of the Old Boys Club in Otego.

She is survived by her son, George Thayer, and his wife, Carol, of Otego; one brother, James Oliver, and his wife, Arlene, of Edmeston; one sister, Louise Olmstead of Nichols; a sister-in-law, Ann Oliver of Oneonta; four grandchildren, Andrea and John Silvernail, Patty and Carl Schreiber, Scott Thayer and Daniel Thayer; six great-grandchildren, Jennifer Ann Atcher, Melissa Sue Atcher, Samantha Renee Schreiber, Jamie Scott Schreiber, Lauren Hill and Ryan Thayer and stepgreat-grandson, John Schreiber; two great-great grandchildren, Rebecca Schreiber and Hailey Schreiber; and several nieces and nephews. Also surviving are very special friends Lois Stanton, Ethel O'Mara, Ella Steenrod and Jennie Empreno.

She was predeceased by one brother, George Oliver, and two sisters, Cora Lord and Myra Christian.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 9, at the Bookhout Funeral Home at 34 River St. in Otego with the Rev. Mel Farmer, pastor of the River Street Baptist Church, officiating.

Friends may call at the Bookhout Funeral Home in Otego from 10 a.m. until service time. The family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Otego Emergency Squad and Fire Department, River Street, Otego, NY 13825.

Arrangements are by the Bookhout. Funeral Home of Otego.

James V. Ferraro

MARGARETVILLE — James V. Ferraro Jr., DDS, of Close Hollow Road in Margaretville, 87, died Thursday, Dec. 5, 2002, at his home following a long illness.

He was born March 29, 1915, in Jersey City, N.J., to James V. Ferraro Sr. and Catherine Canonico.

He married Pamela Borey. They had been a couple since Sept. 1, 1962.

He graduated from Fordham University in the Bronx and continued his education at Tufts Dental School where he graduated at in the top 3 percent of his class. His first practice was in the Bronx. His love for the country brought him to Margaretville where he opened his practice with the help of his wife, Pamela. He made numerous achievements in the field of alcoholism and later became director of the family program of Veritas Villa.

Retiring in 1990 at the age of 83, he spent the remaining year devoted to his family and the house he built. He will be remembered as the strongest and best role model a son could ever ask for. His devotion to his family, his love for his wife and his level of forgiveness and his love for people was immeasurable. He will be greatly missed by his family.

He is survived by his wife, Pamela Ferraro of Margaretville; three sons, James V. Ferraro III of Margaretville, Jon T. Ferraro of Arkville and Michael A. Ferraro of Margaretville; a grandson, Trevor Jon Ferraro; sister, Rose Vercesise of Florida; a niece and a nephew.

A funeral Mass will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 9, at Sacred Heart Church in Margaretville with the Rev. William A. Gorman, celebrant.

Burial will be later in Margaretville Cemetery.

Contributions in memory of James V. Ferraro Jr., may be made to Veritas Villa, 5 Ridge View Rd., PO Box 610, Kerhonkson, NY 12446.

Arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home of Margaretville.

Leon A. Sisson

UNADILLA — Leon A. Sisson, 93, passed away peacefully, Thursday, Dec. 5, 2002, at The Meadows in Cooperstown.

He was born Oct. 24, 1909, in the town of Unadilla, the son of Archie A. and Anna (Dixson) Sisson.

He was married to Elsie Heerwagen on Feb. 22, 1927, in Wells Bridge. Mrs. Sisson predeceased him on Nov. 15, 1997.

Prior to living at The Meadows the past seven years, he was a lifelong resident of Unadilla.

He loved sports, especially hunting, fishing and playing cards.

He retired in 1975 from Bendix Corp. of Sidney, following 32 years of employment.

He was a life member of Sidney Moose Lodge No. 277, Legion of the Moose No. 14, Sand Hill United Methodist Church and the Unadilla Rod and Gun Club.

Leon is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Leon E. and Betty Jane Sisson of Maryland; two daughters and sons-in-law, Else S. and Daniel L. Giles of Lehigh Acres, Fla., and Jeannette S. and John L. Higley of Unadilla; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held later in Sand Hill Cemetery at the convenience of the family.

There will be no calling hours.

Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home in Unadilla.

Andrew M. Nader

ONEONTA — Andrew M. Nader, 85, of Oneonta, passed away Saturday, Dec. 7, 2002, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta, after a lengthy illness.

He was born Aug. 11, 1917, to Michael and Mary Anne (Michael) Nader, in Oneonta.

He married Lillian Oaks on Oct. 18, 1938, in Montrose, Pa. Mrs. Nader passed away Jan. 6, 1996.

Mr. Nader served with the U.S. Army during World War II. He was employed as a supervisor at Allied Corp. in Sidney for 40 years, prior to his retirement in May 1978.

He was a lifelong area resident and a member of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Oneonta. He was also a member of the Oneonta American Legion, the Oneonta Elks Club and the Oneonta Moose Lodge.

He is survived by one son, Michael and his wife, Connie, Nader of Oneonta; two daughters, Loretta and her husband, Chris Callaghan of Latham, and Pamela Liggett of Plainsville, Ga.; five grandchildren, Robert Patrick Callaghan of Latham, and Michael, Megan, Nikki and Danielle Nader of Oneonta; and one sister, Fifi Michael of Cranford, N.J.

Funeral services will be at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 12, 2002, at the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Paul Roman, pastor of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, officiating. Friends may call two hours prior to the service at the funeral home.

Burial will be later in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.

Funeral arrangements are by the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.

Marguerite B. Lord

MASONVILLE — Marguerite B. Lord, 86, passed away Saturday, Dec. 7, 2002, at the New York State Veteran's Home in Oxford.

She was born July 31, 1916, in the town of Masonville, the daughter of Frank O. and Bertha Mae (Swart) Dean.

She was a graduate of Sidney Central School, Class of 1934, and a graduate of Central City Business, Syracuse, Class of 1937.

For many years she was employed as a legal secretary at the Ridley-Lowell School of Business in Binghamton.

She was a member of the Fellowship Baptist Church of Unadilla, and a life member and past matron of OES Chapter No. 345 of Masonville.

Marguerite is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Dennis Bush of Darby, Mont.; a daughter-in-law, Gail L. Lord of Harpursville; 11 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Alvin C. Lord in May 1984; her son, Thomas Lord in August 2002; a brother, Frank Dean; and her sister, Lucille Burton.

Funeral and committal services will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2002, at the Westcott Funeral Home, 123 Main St., Unadilla, with the Rev. R. Michael Amos, pastor of the Fellowship Baptist Church in Unadilla, officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home from 10 a.m. until time of service at 11 a.m. at the funeral home.

Burial will be later in Plains Cemetery, Oneonta.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the NYS Veteran's Home, Oxford, N.Y. 13830.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla.

Olen Burdick

BLOOMVILLE — Olen (Pete) Burdick, 73, passed away on Sunday, Dec. 8, 2002, in the same house he was born in. He was the son of Emmett and Sophie (Dotenville) Burdick.

He married Ellen Drake in Oneonta on Sept. 5, 1964.

Pete graduated from South Kortright Central School in 1947.

He served in the United States Army Air Force during the Korean War. After his discharge he tended bar for nine years in the Boat House Restaurant in South Kortright; worked as a salesman for Van Buren & Sons in Hobart, and as a milking parlor installer and salesman for Frank Lamport in Hobart. In 1967, he went to work as a claims representative for State Farm Insurance, retiring in 1994.

Shortly after his retirement he became caretaker for the Riverside Cemetery in Bloomville, a job he wished he could have had all his life as gardening was a hobby of his.

He was chairman of the Kortright Town Democratic Committee and enjoyed memberships on the Delaware County Democratic committee, the Kortright Town Planning Board; the Delhi American Legion Post No. 190; and an active member of the Bloomville United Methodist Church.

For many years he was secretary of the Bloomville Fire Department and a charter member of the Kortright Emergency Squad. Mr. Burdick also was a 10-year member of the State Arbitration Board for State Farm Insurance.

Some of his happiest times were spent at Cape May, New Jersey and having dinner with his kids.

He is survived by his wife, Ellen, Bloomville; his daughter, Valerie Trovato and her husband, John of West Townsend, Mass.; and a son-in-law, Rick Nesbitt and his companion, Jo Waters of South Kortright; a grandson, Dustin Nesbitt; and a granddaughter, Nichole Trovato. Also surviving are two brothers, Leo of Bloomville and Orlo of  Washingtonville; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A daughter, Peggy Nesbitt; one brother, Oren; and three sisters, Dorothy Shaul, Lottie Martin and Anna Van Zandt, predeceased him.

Those who wish may call at the Burdick home.

There will be a memorial service at the Bloomville United Methodist Church at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 12, 2002, with the Rev. Steven Young Kim officiating.

Contributions in his memory may be made to Student Loan Fund at the Bloomville United Methodist Church or Catskill Area Hospice.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Florence M. Lee

ONEONTA — Mrs. Florence M. Lee, 94, of Oneonta and formerly a longtime resident of Cooperstown, passed away Sunday evening, Dec. 8, 2002, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital Nursing Home in Oneonta.

Mrs. Lee was born on Oct. 17, 1908, in Pierstown, a daughter of William Nelson and Lillie (Buell) Bresee.

She married Loren Lee on July 18, 1925, in Cooperstown. Mr. Lee predeceased her on Dec. 25, 1974.

Raised in the Cooperstown area, Mrs. Lee attended Cooperstown Schools.

For more than 20 years she was employed by the Clark Estates in the area of housekeeping and laundry.

A loving and devoted wife and mother, she enjoyed doing everything for her family. She was an especially great pie baker.

Mrs. Lee is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Ruth Carson of Oneonta and Mrs. Linda Hall of  Jefferson; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Mrs. Helen Wilbur of Cooperstown; and four nieces and one nephew.

She was predeceased by her son, Loren Lee Jr. in 1986; one sister, Beulah Williams in 1981; and one brother, Walter Wilbur in 1957.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2002, at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown, with the Rev. Douglas C. Smith, rector of Christ Church, Cooperstown, officiating.

There will be no calling hours.

Burial will be at a later date in Hartwick Cemetery.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Beverley Borthwick

UNADILLA — Beverley G. Borthwick, 67, passed away Saturday, Dec. 7, 2002, at the New York State Veteran's Home in Oxford.

She was born on Aug. 17, 1935, in Syracuse, the daughter of Charles and Irene (Weckworth) Graves.

She was married to Donald Borthwick on May 17, 1958, Smyrna. Mr. Borthwick predeceased her in June 2002.

She was a former resident of Smyrna, Unadilla, Harpursville and Chiefland, Fla.

She was a former employee of TACO Inc., of Sherburne, NBT Bank of Norwich and Mead Corp of Sidney.

While a resident of Smyrna, she was an active member of the Smyrna Fire Department Auxiliary, the Girl Scouts and participated in many bowling leagues.

Beverley is survived by her adopted son, Bryan Young of Denver,  Colo.; a sister, Jeannette Brown of Sherburne; her brothers, Charles Graves of North Carolina and William Graves of North Syracuse; also several nieces and nephews.

Funeral and committal services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 12, 2002, at the Westcott Funeral Home, 123 Main St., Unadilla, with the Rev. Mary Ann Linder, pastor of the Guilford United Methodist Church, officiating.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2002, when the family will be in attendance.

Burial will be later in Ouleout Valley Cemetery, Franklin.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla.
