Lillian A. Svegl

KORTRIGHT CENTER — Lillian A. Svegl, 77, of Kortright Center went home to be with her Heavenly Father on Saturday, Dec. 14, 2002.

She was born in the town of Kortright on May 4, 1925, the daughter of Gustav and Bertha (Nobel) Schnetzer.

She married the late Pete Svegl Jr. in South Kortright on June 3, 1944. He predeceased her Dec. 27, 1990.

Mrs. Svegl was involved in farming with her family from 1944 until 1971, and also worked as a nurse's aide at Bathgate Hospital, Stamford, Sitt's Nursing Home, Stamford, and at the Delaware County Infirmary, Delhi.

She enjoyed memberships in Most Precious Blood of Jesus Church in South Kortright, Bloomville Grange and the Pomona Grange of Delaware County.

She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Ruth Cleveland and her husband, Fred, and Ms. Valentina Spry; a son, John Svegl and his wife, Patricia, all of Kortright; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

One son, Peter Svegl III; an infant daughter; and a sister, Hattie Schaller, predeceased her.

A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2002, at 11 a.m. from Sacred Heart Church, Stamford, with the Rev. Fr. Anthony Ligato celebrating the Mass.

Calling hours were held 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Dec. 16, 2002, at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart. Burial will follow the service at Sacred Heart Cemetery, Stamford.

Contributions in her memory may be made to Bloomville Emergency Squad.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Francis A. Clark

COOPERSTOWN — Mr. Francis Adams Clark, 88, died Friday evening, Dec. 13, 2002, at his home, "Ravenna Hill," in Cooperstown.

Mr. Clark was born on Feb. 3, 1914, in New York City, the son of the late Samuel Adams Clark and Gertrude Jerome Alexandre Clark, and brother of the late Samuel Adams Clark II. He was related through his mother's family to Sir Winston Churchill.

In 1951, Mr. Clark married Margaret Joan Hanlon, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Michael Hanlon of Elizabeth, N.J., and Cooperstown.

A lifelong resident of New York City, Mr. Clark was educated at St. Bernard's School in New York City, St. George's School in Newport, R.I., and Columbia University in New York City.

Mr. Clark served his country in the U.S. Army from 1942 until his honorable discharge in 1946 as a first lieutenant.

In 1935, he joined the Sinclair Oil Corp. as a roustabout, retiring in 1969 as director of corporate relations. During his tenure at Sinclair Oil, he was "honored for excellence" by President Lyndon  Johnson for his efforts with the U.S. Department of Motor Vehicles and the National Safety Bureau for promoting greater use of seat belts.

Having had a home in Cooperstown since 1948, Mr. Clark and his family moved to "Ravenna Hill" upon his retirement in 1969.

In 1973, as chief executive officer, he organized and developed the Cooperstown Recreational Corp., which operated Doubleday Batting Range. An active member of the community, Mr. Clark, served as the chairman of the American Red Cross Fund Drive in 1972, and as the treasurer of the Otsego County Conservation Association as well as a supporter of aid for battered women with the Otsego County Salvation Army.

An active sportsman, he was a member of Turf & Field Club, Union Club, Rockaway Hunt Club, Lawrence Beach Club, New York Athletic Club, and the Cooperstown Country Club.

Mr. Clark is survived by his wife; four daughters, Robin Jerome Clark, Joan Clark Kegelman, Claudia Gertrude Clark, and Nancy Clark Angerer; one son, Francis ("Sandy") Adams Clark Jr.; five grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A memorial service will be held at noon on Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2002, at St. Mary's "Our Lady of the Lake" Catholic Church in Cooperstown, with Fr. John P. Rosson, pastor, presiding.

Burial will be at a later date in the Fly Creek Valley Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to Catskill Area Hospice & Palliative Care Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Walter F. Johnson

SIDNEY — Walter F. Johnson, 85, of Sidney passed away Sunday, Dec. 15, 2002, at his home.

He was born Nov. 11, 1917, son of the late Ernest and Anna Rosenqvist  Johnson in Weehawken, N.J.

Walter married Mildred Rathbun on June 6, 1942, in Unadilla. Mr. and Mrs.  Johnson owned and operated a dairy farm and  Johnson Farm Market in Sidney from 1949-1986. They provided the local area with sweet corn, produce and Christmas trees. Walter served his farming community all his life.

He was a delegate and Sire Committee member for the Eastern A.I. Cooperative, and he was the State Director, Club President and Honor Roll member in 1984 of the Delaware County Holstein Club.

Mr.  Johnson was a member of the New York State Farm Wage Council in 1980, and a FFA Honorary State Farmer in 1978.

Walter was very active in the civic arena as well. He served as Town of Sidney Councilman for 11 years and was the Town of Sidney Supervisor for 17 years.

Mr.  Johnson was a founding member of The Hospital Foundation and was honored with The Hospital Foundation Award in 2002. He was a member and Past president of the Sidney Rotary Club, and was a Paul Harris Fellow. Mr.  Johnson served on the Sidney School Board and was a Past President. Walter was also a member and moderator for the First Congregational Church of Sidney.

He is survived by his wife, Mildred Johnson, Sidney; two sons and daughter-in-law, David and Cathy Johnson, Unadilla, and Peter Johnson, Sidney; three daughters and sons-in-law, Kris and Roger Chambers, Bainbridge, Charlotte and John Axtell, Franklin, and Corinne Benn, Lake Worth, Fla.; grandchildren, Shari and Fred Ploutz Jr., Oneonta, Kelli and Bill Morgan, Union Springs, Marc and Nikki Johnson, Unadilla, Luke Johnson, Aurora, Joshua, Derek and Katy Johnson, Unadilla, Dawn and John Mushtare, Oneonta, Chad and Kirsten Chambers, Portland, Ore., Michael and Gwen Axtell, Albany,  Calif., Steven Axtell, Franklin, and Joel Benn, Lake Worth, Fla.; 12 great-grandchildren; special brother and sister-in-law, Ben and Jan Johnson, Bainbridge; eight nieces and nephews, several cousins, grand nieces and nephews and a very special foreign exchange student from 1962-63, Fleming Larsen, Roskilde, Denmark.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Dec. 19, 2002, at the First Congregational Church in Sidney at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Patricia Robinson, pastor officiating.

Friends may call Wednesday; the family will be in attendance from 6 to 8 p.m. at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery in the spring.

Memorial contributions may be made in Mr. Johnson's name in lieu of flowers to The Sidney Area Hospital Foundation or the First Congregational Church of Sidney.

Margaret Flaherty

BLOOMVILLE — Margaret L. Flaherty, 81, of Bloomville died Saturday, Dec. 14, 2002.

She was born Jan. 5, 1921, in the town of Kortright, the daughter of Ernest and Mabel (Tompkins) Whitney.

She married the late Harry B. Dorosky Sept. 26, 1940. He passed away May 7, 1982. Dec. 10, 1995, she married Edward T. Flaherty and he predeceased her Nov. 22, 1996.

Mrs. Flaherty took great pride in her home. She loved to investigate yard sales where she collected small antiques and in particular dishes and glassware to decorate her home.

One son, Dennis and his wife, Eda Dorosky, Bloomville; a brother, Chauncey and his wife, Sally Whitney, Bloomville; and four grandchildren, who she loved very much, Kimberly Lord, Wells Bridge, Lucas Dorosky, Japan, Michael Dorosky, Bloomville, and Ryan Dorosky, Bloomville, survive.

Funeral services will take place on Thursday, Dec. 19, 2002, at 11 a.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart, with Pastoral Associate Louise Evans officiating.

Calling hours will take place on Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2002, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow the service at Sacred Heart Cemetery, Stamford.

Contributions in her memory may be made to a scholarship fund established in her name at South Kortright Central School for students especially interested in Home Economics or the Catskill Area Hospice.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Floyd Mattice

STAMFORD — Floyd Mattice, 75, of Stamford died peacefully Sunday, Dec. 15, 2002, at Robinson Terrace, Stamford.

Mr. Mattice was born in Blenheim, the son of the late Claude and the late Alice Stevens Mattice.

He served in the Army during World War II.

He is survived by a son, James Mattice and wife Mary of Altamont; a daughter, Donna French of Virginia; a daughter-in-law, Jane Mattice of Eastberne; a special friend, Wilma Amatuccio of Stamford. Also surviving are his three brothers; six sisters; 11 granddaughters; two grandsons; two great-granddaughters; one great-grandson; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mr. Mattice was predeceased by his son, Floyd Jr. (Skip).

Friends may call Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2002, from 2 to 6 p.m. at Hall Funeral Home, 40 Main St., Stamford.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Dec. 19, 2002, at noon, in the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford, with the Rev. Richard Elder officiating.

Burial will follow in the Stamford Cemetery, Stamford.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford, under the direction of William A. Tari.

Vera LaBarre

CHERRY VALLEY — Mrs. Vera LaBarre, 84, of Cherry Valley passed away peacefully Dec. 12, 2002, at her home after a long illness.

She was born Vera Victoria Montagna on Nov. 30, 1918, in Rocca Casale, Italy. Her parents were Charles Montagna and Adele Gianangelo. Her family immigrated to the U.S. in 1925, and made their home in Uniontown, Pa.

She graduated from Uniontown High School in 1938, and attended Berkeley School of Commerce.

Vera married her high school sweetheart, Richard, on Dec. 28, 1940, while he was an undergraduate at Princeton University.

They moved to New York City in 1945, Croton-on-Hudson, in 1949, and Ossining, in 1956.

She was employed by the Ossining Union Free School District as an executive secretary from 1958 to 1980. After retirement Vera volunteered as a tutor at the Green Chimneys School (a residential school for disturbed children) in Brewster.

She and her husband moved to Cherry Valley in 1987.

Vera enjoyed handwork, embroidery and quilting during the cold months, but her passion was gardening. She created beautiful gardens wherever she made her home.

Vera is survived by her husband, Richard VanMeter LaBarre, of Cherry Valley; her son, Charles LaBarre and his wife, Doris Weber of Woodstock; her daughter, Frances LaBarre and her husband, Colin Greer, and their children, Simon, Olivia and Lucy of New York City; her daughter, Catherine LaBarre and her son, Nicholas Jordan and his father, Paul Jordan of Cherry Valley. Also surviving are her siblings, Amelio Montagna of Whispering Pines, N.C., Dina Montagna LaBarre, of W. Caldwell, N.J., and Lil Montagna Bias of Charleston, W.Va. Many nieces and nephews including Christina LaBarre of Cooperstown, survive her.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate Vera's life on Sunday, Dec. 22, 2002, at 2 p.m., at her home in Cherry Valley.

Donations in her memory may be made to: Catskill Area Hospice & Palliative Care Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820, or the Cherry Valley Emergency Squad, Cherry Valley, NY 13320.

Arrangements are entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley. Cremation took place at the Leatherstocking Crematory.

Barbara Wickham

NORWICH — Barbara B. Wickham, 85, long time Norwich resident, passed away Monday evening, Dec. 16, 2002, in the Oneonta Nursing Home, where she had made her home for the past two years.

Barb was born in Springfield, Vt. At an early age, she moved with her family to Middletown, where she attended and graduated from the Middletown schools.

In 1937, Barb and her husband William moved to Norwich where they purchased a farm on Route 12 south, the same farm they operated for over 40 years.

In addition to raising her family and helping on the farm, Barb worked for a few years for the 4-H Extension Office on North Broad Street in Norwich.

In December 1961, she began her long career with the Norwich School System. This career spanned 31 years at the Gibson School where Barb soon became noted for her excellent secretarial skills. Barb was devoted to the school system, and had the pleasure of working with many of the school's principals over the years. She was extremely proud of the fact that, during this time, she graduated from Broome Tech in Binghamton at the age of 52. She was also very proud of the fact that she could continue working with the school until the age of 75, and she was that age when she finally retired in December 1992.

Barb was a devoted member of the Emmanuel Episcopal Church of Norwich for over 60 years, serving as Clerk of the Vestry for 25 years and was then a member of the Church Vestry.

In her spare time, Barb loved to travel with her husband and had traveled all over the world.

Born Sept. 18, 1917, in Springfield, Vt., Barb was the daughter of Weston Grant and Helen (Keil) Barnum.

On Jan. 16, 1938, in Middletown, she married William H. Wickham II who passed away Aug. 8, 1978.

Barb is survived by her children, the Rev. William Hunt Wickham III and his wife, Joyce, of Richmond, Va., Weston Grant Wickham of Lapeer, Mich., and Dan Keil Wickham and his wife, Ursula, of Otego; by her grandchildren, Barbara Owens and husband, Thomas, of Clinton, Brian Wickham and wife, Daina, of Laurel, Md., William Wickham IV of Kiev, Ukraine, Brook Sargent and husband, Paul, of San Diego,  Calif., Jessica Hebert of Richmond, Va., Keith Wickham of Dayton, Ohio, and Scott Wickham and wife, Lisa, of Saugerties; and by her nine great-grandchildren, Nicholas, Benjamin, Sarah and Blythe Owens, Christopher Wickham, Katelyn, Kelsey, Keilly, and Scott Seamus Wickham. Barb is also survived by her sister, Muriel Roberts of Morristown, N.J.; and her cousin, Pat  White of Norwich; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Memorial services for Barb will be held on Friday, Dec. 20, 2002, at 11 a.m. from the Emmanuel Episcopal Church of Norwich. The Rev. Glenn Mahaffey, Rector, and the Rev. Robert Haskell of St. James' Church of Oneonta, will officiate.

Interment will be in the Mt. Hope Cemetery of Norwich.

There will be no calling hours.

Rozeltha E. Jones

COOPERSTOWN — Mrs. Rozeltha (Rose) Jones, 94, died Wednesday afternoon, Dec. 11, 2002, at St. Mary's Hospital in Amsterdam.

Rose was born on Oct. 3, 1908, on the family farm near Charles City, Iowa, the daughter of George E. and Daisy M. (Perry) Todd.

In 1918, Rose's father died during an influenza epidemic, and within a short time, Rose's mother and her four children moved into the town of Charles City.

In 1926, Rose graduated from Charles City High School and then became employed as a bookkeeper for the Primary Oil Company. She later joined the Northwestern Bell Telephone Company as an operator.

In February of 1935, she took the call for a fire at the Hildreth Hotel in Charles City. One of the volunteer firemen who fought the blaze was Weston E. Jones, who had returned to his childhood home to set up a law practice in 1935. On July 18, 1936, Rose and Weston were married; however, they did not announce their marriage for over two years because of a telephone company hiring policy which excluded married women.

On Oct. 20, 1939, Rose and Weston's son, Clyde R.  Jones II, was born.

Upon the death of her husband in 1953, Rose returned to her career as a telephone operator until retiring in 1973. She continued to live in the family home at 204 Kelly St. in Charles City until nine years ago, when she moved to Cooperstown to be near her son and his family.

Rose enjoyed activities with the Telephone Pioneers and retired operators from the Charles City telephone office. She was a member of the Wa-Tan-Ye Club and the First Congregational Church in Charles City.

Rose is survived by her son, C.R.  Jones and his spouse, Susan, of Cooperstown; three grandchildren, Graham  Jones of Cooperstown and Rotterdam, Perry  Jones and his spouse, Jacqueline, of Marcy, and Amanda  Jones of Cooperstown and Monterrey, Mexico; a sister, Irma Krause of Wilmington, Del.; a sister-in-law, Viola Todd of Charles City, Iowa; a niece, Pamela Krause Kane; and two nephews, Don Krause and Michael Todd.

She was predeceased by three sisters, Hazel, and Madge and Viola, the latter two of which died in infancy; and a brother, Eldon.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 22, 2002, at the First Presbyterian Church of Cooperstown, with the Rev. Lin R. Quinlan, co-pastor, officiating. The committal service and burial will take place in Riverside Cemetery in Charles City, Iowa, in the spring of 2003.

At Rose's request, in lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to the Floyd County Historical Society, 500 Gilbert St., Charles City, Iowa, 50616.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Laura Sargent

ONEONTA — Laura Sargent, 53, of Oneonta, passed on unexpectedly on Sunday, Dec. 8, 2002, at her residence.

She was born Nov. 10, 1949, to Everett and Doris (Marx) Sargent, in Oneonta.

Laura was a graduate of Oneonta High School, Cazenovia College, and the Fox Hospital X-ray Technologists Program.

Until her mother's ill health brought her back to Oneonta, Laura worked in Monticello as an X-ray technician and a caregiver in a Nursing Home for residents with physical and emotional handicaps.

After returning to Oneonta in the late 1980s, Laura worked as an aide and a media specialist in the computer lab at Riverside School for eight years. She loved children and was especially adept at helping them learn.

Laura was a life long member and Ruling Elder of the First Presbyterian Church, where she had taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. She co-chaired the Christian Education Committee and served on the Personnel and Membership Committees over the years. The church choir was a continuing love until her death.

Laura's passion for pets was fulfilled through membership in the GOFAR Society, where she served on the Board of Directors. She was a member of the Hartwick College Citizens' Board and the Community Concert Association. She also volunteered at the State University College at Oneonta Science Discovery Center.

She is survived by a brother, Francis (Bo) Sargent of Holly Springs, N.C.; two nephews, Travis and Phillip Sargent; stepmother, Mary Sargent of Naples, Fla.; one aunt, Carrie Marx; and her two granddaughters, Robin and Holly Lynn; and other extended family.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, 1 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, 296 Main St., Oneonta.

Contributions may be made to the GOFAR Society, P.O. Box 755, Oneonta and the Catskill Symphony Orchestra, P.O. Box 14, Oneonta.

Funeral arrangements are by the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home in Oneonta.
