Gerald C. Platt

ONEONTA — Gerald C. "Jerry" Platt, 65 years, of Oneonta, died Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2002, at his residence with his family by his side.

He was born Oct. 25, 1937, in Norwich, the son of Clifford and Eva (Wright) Platt.

Jerry served in the United States Marine Corps from 1957 to 1960.

He married Sandra Smith on Oct. 25, 1964, in Oneonta.

Jerry was a police officer for the City of Oneonta for 37 years, retiring as Lieutenant.

He enjoyed camping with his boys, fishing, hunting, riding his motorcycle and playing horseshoes. But most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family and helping others in times of need. Jerry was a member of the Oneonta Moose Club.

He is survived by his wife, Sandy Platt, of Oneonta; his five sons, David Allen Platt, Neil Gerald Platt, Richard Jay Platt, all of Oneonta, John Charles Platt of  West Virginia, and Douglas William Platt of Oneonta; five grandchildren, Susan Platt of Morris, Eric Platt of Franklin, Kyle James Clay of  West Virginia, Veronica Canas of Miami, Fla., and Alexandria Jay Evans of Apache Junction, Ariz.; two sisters, Catherine Wellman of Hartwick and Vivian Spezio of Oneonta; two brothers, Charles Platt of Otego and Ronald Platt of Unadilla; as well as several nieces, nephews and a cousin.

Jerry was predeceased by his parents, Clifford and Eva Platt; and two brothers, Gene and Warren Platt.

At the request of Jerry, there will be no services or calling hours.

Memorial contributions may be made to Catskill Area Hospice & Palliative Care Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820 in loving memory of Gerald C. "Jerry" Platt.

Funeral arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Herbert Truesdell

LEXINGTON — Herbert A. Truesdell, age 79, passed away on Dec. 17, 2002, at the Margaretville Hospital.

He was born on Dec. 3, 1923, in Prattsville, to Herbert and Susan (Rappleyea) Truesdell.

He is survived by his wife, Elnora (nee Jones) Truesdell; his children, Alfred and his wife, Sue, of Prattsville, Marilyn DuBois and fiancee, Tom Soule, of Ashland, Barbara Richrath of Prattsville, Jeanne Countermine and husband, Jeff, of Altamont, Gail Maynard and husband, Ronald, of Las Vegas, Nev., and Gary Truesdell and his wife, Barbara, of Prattsville. He is also survived by his sister, Madeline Sutton of Ashland; and his sister-in-law, Helen Partridge of Ashland. He is the grandfather of 18 and great-grandfather of seven.

He was predeceased by his brother, Donnie; and his sister, Evelyn.

Herbert was a farmer and was born and raised on the Truesdell farm, which is still operating today under his son. Gary.

Mr. Truesdell was a member of the Lexington Fire Company, the Dairyman's League and the Farm Bureau.

Calling hours will be held on Thursday, Dec. 19, 2002, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Decker Funeral Home, Windham. The funeral service will conducted at 2 p.m. at the funeral home, with the Rev. Elliot Oaks, pastor of the Lexington Prattsville United Methodist Church, officiating.

The interment will be at Fairlawn Cemetery, Prattsville, in the spring.

Mary G. Cole

ONEONTA — Mary G. (Mastro) Cole, 75, of Oneonta passed away Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2002 at her residence.

She was born Sept. 23, 1927, in Oneonta, the daughter of Carmine and Rose (Pedrone) Mastro.

Prior to its closing, Mary was employed as manager for the Triangle Shoe Store on Main Street in Oneonta for 35 years. She then worked for Astrocom up until her retirement.

She was a member of St. Mary's Church.

Mary is survived by two sisters and a brother, Angeline Mastrangeli of Rochester, Sister Mary Angeline Mastro, R.S.M. of Oneonta, and Patrick T. Mastro of Oneonta; along with several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by two brothers, Theodore and Dominic Mastro.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Thursday, Dec. 19, 2002, at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, Oneonta, with the Rev. Thomas Babiuch, associate pastor, officiating.

Friends may call Wednesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta, at which time the family will be in attendance.

Burial will be in the spring in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary's Church, 39 Walnut St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Mary E. Elwood

ANDES — Mary E. "Ellie" Elwood, 91, of Andes, died Dec. 17, 2002, at Countryside Care Center in Delhi.

Ellie was born in Brooklyn on Dec. 26, 1910, the daughter of Phillip and Maria Grachtripe Cook.

She married Donald E. Elwood on April 22, 1935, in Brentwood. He predeceased her in March 1988.

A resident of Andes since 1946, Ellie was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church in Andes. She was also a member of the Andes American Legion Ladies Auxiliary and the Pleasant Valley Community Hall.

Surviving are her son, William P. Elwood Sr., of Andes; and her daughter, Mary Belle Nohejl of Andes. Also surviving are seven grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

A Mass of the Christian Burial will be held on Friday, Dec. 20, 2002, at 9 a.m. at Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in Margaretville, with the Rev. William A. Gorman, pastor, officiating.

Friends may call at the Jester-Stanley Funeral Home in Andes where the family will be present on Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Thursday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.

Memorials to the Andes Emergency Squad or St. Ann's Church, Andes in the name of Ellie Elwood are appreciated.

Dorothy Downing

ONEONTA — Dorothy B. Downing, 94, formerly of Kenmore, and most recently of Oneonta, passed away Monday, Dec. 16, 2002, at the Oneonta Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

She was born Nov. 29, 1908, in Buffalo, the daughter of Albert and Anna (Hulpiau) Bell.

She married John C. Downing on Aug. 2, 1932, in Buffalo. He predeceased her.

She moved to Oneonta in 1987, prior to that she lived in Kenmore. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Oneonta. She enjoyed gardening, baking, tatting and crocheting, she was also an avid sports enthusiast.

She is survived by her two daughters, Diane E. Downing of Beaumont,  Texas, and Elaine L. Downing of Oneonta. Also surviving her are grandchildren, David Eric John Downing, John Lambert; and Elizabeth Nicolaou of Johannesburg, South Africa; and great grandchildren, Cleo-Eleni, and Nicolas.

Graveside and committal services will be held on Thursday, Dec. 19, 2002, at 11 a.m. in the Forest Lawn Cemetery, Buffalo, with the Rev. Bob Wendelin officiating.

There will be no public calling hours.

Arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.

Kenneth N. Palmer

WESTFORD — Kenneth N. Palmer, 60, passed away Monday, Dec. 16, 2002, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

Ken was born Dec. 3, 1942, in Cooperstown, the son of the late Walter J. and the late Eleanor (Klein) Palmer.

Ken was a graduate of Schenevus Draper Central, Class of 1960.

He served in the U.S. Navy from 1960 to 1963.

Ken was currently employed at the Soccer Hall Of Fame, Oneonta.

He is survived by one sister, Joan E. Bramsen of Maryland; two brothers, Jay and his wife, Cynthia Palmer, of Westford, and Gary Palmer of Ashland, Ore.; and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be in the Westford Cemetery, at the convenience of the family.

Memorials may be made to Westford First Responders, P.O. Box 187, Westford, N.Y. 13488 or the Schenevus-Maryland Emergency Squad, 105 County Highway 34, Schenevus, N.Y. 12155.

Arrangements are by the Heller Funeral Home, 25 Arch St., Schenevus.

Robert G. Rood

HARTWICK — Robert George Rood Jr., 63, of Hartwick died Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2002, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

He was born Dec. 19, 1938, in the town of Russia, N.Y., the son of Robert George and Florence Irene (Mykel) Rood Sr.

A lifelong area resident, Robert worked at the age of 14 for John K. Harrington in Mount Vision, until his death in 1978. He then went to work farming for Howard Marlette for many years leaving to go to work for Empire Livestock in Oneonta.

Having a love for farming, he returned and worked for Jerry Wood in Mount Vision until having a stroke and a heart attack. Due to health problems, Robert was forced to leave the farming industry where he then began working with his brother doing lawn care business in Mount Vision. He was very hardworking and no matter how he felt he would never complain.

Robert, enjoyed hunting, fishing, listening to country and western music, going out to eat, but most of all he loved spending time with his family especially his grand niece, Tyler.

He will be remembered by his family and friends as "happy go lucky."

Robert was a member of the Hartwick Rod and Gun Club, the National Rifle Association, the Rifle and Pistol Team at the Burlington Flats Fish and Game Club as well as The Central New York Chapter of the Pioneers Gas Engine Club.

He is survived by his mother, Florence Irene Rood, of Hartwick; his sisters and their spouses, Gladys Eldred of Norwich, Ruth and John Turn bull of Mount Vision, Patricia and Frederick DeForest of West Edmeston, Dorothy and Roy Roberts of Oneonta, Mary and John Bush of Hartwick; a half-sister and her husband, Betty and Walter Ketchum of Tully; his brothers and their wives, Lawrence and Rita Rood of Mount Vision, Arthur William Rood of Oneonta, Edward and Linda Rood of Hartwick and Mykel and Deborah Rood of West Burlington; as well as several aunts, cousins, nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews.

Funeral and committal services will be held on Saturday, Dec. 21, 2002, at 1 p.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Laverne Saxer, pastor of the Christian Church, Hartwick officiating.

There will be no calling hours.

Burial will be in the spring at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the Hartwick Fire Department and Emergency Squad, Hartwick, NY 13348 in loving memory of Robert George Rood Jr.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Edna May Waro

COOPERSTOWN — Edna May Waro passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2002, at The Meadows. She was 78 years old.

Edna was born in Flushing, on May 29, 1926, to Ivan and Mary (O'Leary) Klein. The family moved to Westford in June 1938.

She was a graduate of Andrew S. Draper, Schenevus.

She married Matthew Edward (Ed) Waro Sr., on Jan. 7, 1948, in Amsterdam, who passed away July 8, 1975.

Edna will be fondly remembered by many for her dedication to her career as a nurse's aide at Bassett Healthcare for 37 years. She retired in August 1996.

She is survived by her three sons and their families, Matthew Jr. and Andrea of Leonardtown, Md., Mark and Gloria of South Hartwick, Michael and Kathy of Cooperstown; grandchildren, Darrin and Jennifer, Wyatt, Malia, Matthew, Cody, MacKenzie, Justin and Kyle; and great-granddaughters, Sarah and Rachel. Other survivors include siblings, and their families, Edward and Doris Klein of Keystone Heights, Fla., Walter and Betty Klein of Martin, Ga., Frank Klein of Jensen Beach, Fla., Martha Morris of Newberry, Fla., Betty Ann and Chuck Buxton of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., and Katherine and Michael Korotitsch of Schenectady. She also leaves behind nephews, nieces and cousins.

She is predeceased by her parents, Ivan and Mary Klein; grandson, Matthew Stephen Waro; brothers, Henry, Ivan and Charles Klein; sister, Eleanor Palmer.

Edna enjoyed travel, spending time with her family and grandchildren and listening to Don Ho and Elvis Presley.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, Dec. 21, 2002, at 10 a.m. at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Cooperstown, with the Rev. Ronald Fralick, pastor of the Cherry Valley Presbyterian Church, officiating. Calling hours will be on Friday, Dec. 20, 2002, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Cooperstown, when the family will be in attendance.

Burial will be in the spring in Westville Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Disease Association at 360 N. Michigan Ave., Chicago, IL 60601.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Edith M. Crandall

ONEONTA — Edith (Edie) M. Crandall, 63, of Oneonta passed away Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2002, at the Robinson Terrace Nursing Home in Stamford.

She was born April 8, 1939, in Morris, the daughter of Aaron P. and Edna Eldred.

She worked for many years, until her retirement, as a housekeeping manager for the Super 8 Motel in Oneonta.

Edith will be remembered for her very strong faith and her dedication as a member and volunteer at the Salvation Army Church, where she taught Sunday School.

Edith was a loving, caring mother and grandmother and will be deeply missed by her children and grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband, Merlin Crandall, of Oneonta; her three daughters, Valerie Hoffman and Edward Keeley of Davenport Center, Laurie Hanvey and Chad Smith of East Meredith, and Christie Southern of Binghamton. Four brothers, Benjamin Eldred and his spouse, Melody of Oneonta, Donald Eldred and his spouse, Kerrie of Oneonta, Kenneth Eldred of Oneonta, and Harold Hammon of Maryland; a sister-in-law, Elsie Davis; many nieces and nephews.

Her parents and a brother, Aaron Eldred Jr. predeceased her.

Funeral and committal services will be held Friday, Dec. 20, 2002, at 2 p.m. in the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Capt. Michael Knepp of the Salvation Army Church officiating.

Friends may call at the Bookhout Funeral Home from noon until the time of the funeral service at which time the family will be in attendance.

Burial will take place in the spring in Hillington Cemetery, Morris.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice & Palliative Care Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.

Lindsay Lee Yeager

ARKVILLE — Lindsay Lee Yeager, 20, of Arkville died on Dec. 13, 2002, at the Benedictine Hospital, Kingston, as a result of a motor vehicle accident on 28, town of Shandaken.

She was born Feb. 17. 1982, in Walton, the daughter of Timothy F. Yeager and Wendy Lee Pritchett.

She was a waitress and kitchen helper at the Margaretville Pizza Kitchen.

A lifelong area resident, she was a very creative and free spirited person. She loved music and doing art work and also bead art. She was a person that enjoyed traveling, dancing and singing. She was a loving and nurturing individual.

At the time of her death, she had been eight months pregnant, Giovanni Emmanuelle Yeager, was his name.Lindsay is survived by her mother, Wendy Lee Effner, Arkville; stepfather, Charles R. Effner, Arkville; sister, Antoinette Yeager, New Jersey; nephew, Anthony E. Escalera; brother, Timothy Fields, Mount Vision; aunts, uncles and cousins.

She was predeceased by her father, Timothy F. Yeager, he died Dec. 31, 1990.

Funeral service will be held at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 21, 2002, at the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville, with the Rev. Robert Englehardt, officiating. Calling hours will be held before the service from 2 to 4 p.m.

Burial will be in the Roxbury Cemetery at a later date.

Arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.
