Frances Lawrence

WALTON — Frances C. Lawrence, age 61, of the town of Walton, died Friday morning, Dec. 20, 2002, at home after a long illness.

Fran was born in Patterson, N.J., the daughter of Clarence and Lena VanTol Bosland.

On April 6, 1963, she married Richard K. Lawrence, in Patterson, N.J. In 1983, she and Dick moved from New Jersey to the Walton area and she was employed as a billing clerk by Gelder Medical Group in Sidney.

Mrs. Lawrence was of the Presbyterian faith.

She is survived by her husband, Richard K. Lawrence; one son, Christopher B. Lawrence of Philadelphia, Pa.; one sister, Carol Bosland of San Diego,  Calif.; and her father, Clarence Bosland of Walton.

Funeral services will be private at the convenience of the family.

There are no calling hours.

Memorial contributions in Fran's memory may be made to The American Cancer Society, Delaware County Unit, 5 Oak Ave, Sidney, NY 13838. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.

Stanley R. Barnes

SCHENEVUS — Stanley R. Barnes, 81, died suddenly on Saturday, Dec. 21, 2002, in Schenevus.

He was born Sept. 23, 1921, in Richmondville, the son of the late Maurice and the late Cynthia (Butler) Barnes.

Stanley married Rosalie Mae Wilsey on Dec. 15, 1945, in Schenevus.

He was a U.S. Army veteran serving during World War II in Panama and the Pacific.

Stanley was a self-employed owner with wife, Rosalie, of Stanley Barnes Roofing and Siding and Barnes Monuments Works for the past 47 years.

Stanley was a member of the Schenevus United Methodist Church; Otschodela Council Boy Scouts of America; the Schenevus VFW Post 2752; the Worcester American Legion Post 1584; and a charter member of the Schenevus-Maryland Emergency Squad.

He was very involved with the fire service. He was a member the Central New York Fireman's Association; the Otsego County Volunteer Fireman's Association; and of the C.H. Graham Hose Company, Schenevus Fire Department, where he served as Fire Chief from 1953-1959 and again in 1963. Stan also served as Fire Commissioner of the Schenevus-Maryland Fire District for many years. He was the Otsego County Fire Coordinator from 1957-1967, and the Secretary/Treasurer for the Otsego County Fireman's Association from 1985 to present.

Stanley has also been a longtime school bus driver with Schenevus Central School, an avid hunter, boy scout leader and outdoorsman.

He is survived by his wife, Rosalie M. Barnes, of Schenevus; son, Robert and daughter-in-law, Maggie Barnes of Oneonta; grandchildren, Eric Barnes of Oneonta, Angela Barnes of Oneonta, David Barnes of Schenevus; two sisters, Wanda Johns and her husband, Howard of East Worcester and Muriel Smith of Caroga Lake; and several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be at Heller Funeral Home, Schenevus on Thursday, Dec. 26, 2002, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. The family in attendance 7 to 9 p.m. There will be a Fireman's Service from 7:15-7:45 p.m.

The funeral service will be Friday. Dec. 27, 2002, at 1 p.m. at Schenevus United Methodist Church, Main Street, Schenevus, with the Rev. Thomas Snyder, pastor, the Rev. Judith A. Thistle and the Rev. Gene Jenson, officiating.

Burial will be in Schenevus Cemetery with military honor presented by the Schenevus VFW Post 2752.

The family has requested memorial contributions to be made to the Otschodela Council Boy Scouts of America, Route 23, Southside, Oneonta, NY 13820 or the Schenevus United Methodist Church, Main Street, Schenevus, NY 12155.

Funeral arrangements are by the Heller Funeral Home, 25 Arch St., Schenevus.

Leland Thompson

CANAJOHARIE — Leland (Lee) C. Thompson, 66, of Moyer Street, died Sunday, Dec. 22, 2002, at Albany Medical Center with his wife, daughter and son by his side.

Born on Jan. 7, 1936, in Cooperstown. He was the son of the late Clyde H. Thompson and Grace (Hull) Thompson. He was a graduate of Cherry Valley Central School.

Lee retired as a 20 veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, having served in the Vietnam War. He retired in January 2001 from Beech Nut Nutrition Corp.

Lee was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed deer, turkey, bird and waterfowl hunting as well as fishing and camping. He dedicated many years to coaching and support of youth sports and activities for his children and grandchildren.

He was a member of the Roseboom Planning Board, Canajoharie Fishing Game and Ducks Unlimited.

Lee was devoted to his family and was a constant source of strength and encouragement for them to pursue and achieve their goals. He enjoyed talking with anyone who shared his passion for the outdoors and kids. He will be missed by his family and friends.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Shirley A. (Porath) Thompson, to whom he was married on May 18, 1957. He was the father and pride of his daughter, Kim Lee (Thompson) Gray and her husband, George J. (Joe) Gray, South Valley; and his son, Robert Leland Thompson and his wife, Mary Elizabeth (Scorse) Thompson of Amsterdam; brother of David H. Thompson and his wife, Sharon of Powder Springs, Ga.; Willis D. Thompson of Troy; Nancy (Thompson) Prill and her husband, Larry of Westford. Brother-in-law of John Hull of Cherry Valley; Fred Porath and Janet Sikkema of East Springfield. He is survived by 16 nephews and 13 nieces as well as numerous loving and dear cousins.

Lee is survived by the light of his life, six grandchildren, Justin Gray of Howes Cave, Scott Gray and Chad Gray of South Valley, Michael, Jordan Elizabeth, Kelsey Thompson of Amsterdam; and a great-grandchild expected in May.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m., Friday, Dec. 27, 2002, at the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley, by the Rev. Ron Fralick. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 26, 2002, at the Ottman Funeral Home, 22 Church St., Cherry Valley.

In the spring a full military burial will be held at the South Valley Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Cherry Valley Ambulance Corp, Cherry Valley Fire Department, Cherry Valley Fish & Game, Canajoharie Ambulance Corp or Canajoharie Fire Department.

The family would like to thank the wonderful staff members of Albany Medical Center's 3rd Floor ICU and 5th Floor Vascular Unit who were so caring and compassionate during these past weeks as well as the many dedicated doctors who offered their treatment and talents during his illness.

We appreciate the prayers from his many dear friends and family members during these past difficult weeks, God Bless You All.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Helen M. Coman

NEW BERLIN — Helen M. Coman, 69, of 89 North Main St., New Berlin, passed away Saturday, Dec. 21, 2002, following an extended illness at Chenango Memorial Hospital, Norwich.

She was born on Oct. 8, 1933, in the town of Columbus, the daughter of Herbert and Ethel (Anson) Coman.

She graduated from New Berlin Central School in 1951, and from Morrisville Agricultural and Technical College in 1956, as a licensed practical nurse.

Helen enjoyed her salt and pepper collection and her collection of recipe books. Over the years she enjoyed doing many day trips.

Helen joined the nursing staff of the Chase Hospital of New Berlin in 1957. In the opening of the Chase Memorial Nursing Home in 1971, at Terrace Heights, she became involved with the physical therapy department. She later became a family care provider in 1986, with the State of New York Office of Mental Retardation & Developmental Disabilities and continued in that capacity until her death.

Helen is survived by her fiance, Samuel Senn, of New Berlin; and five cousins, Milton Anson, New Berlin, Janet Coman, Cape May, N.J., Leona Seaton, Richmond, Va., Marion Hayes, Ilion and John Clark, New Berlin. She was also a special friend to many people.

Helen had a dual membership in the Columbus Quarter Baptist Church and the Columbus Community Church. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Tianderah Chapter, in which she served as matron.

Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 26, 2002, at the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin.

Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 27, 2002, at the Columbus Community Church, 4311 State Highway 80, town of Columbus, with the Rev. Stephen L. Reese, senior pastor of the Columbus Community Church and the Rev. Ernest Clemens, pastor of the Columbus Quarter Baptist Church, officiating.

Interment will be at the Columbus Corners Cemetery, beside her beloved parents.

Memorial donations may be made to the New Berlin Emergency Squad.

Robert Woodrow

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Robert W. Woodrow Sr., age 92, of Union Street, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday night, Dec. 21, 2002, in Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown. He was surrounded with the comfort and love of his wife and son at his passing.

Robert was born on Sept. 29, 1910, in Yonkers, son of the late Robert and Emily  Woods Woodrow. In 1917, his family moved to Milford, where he was raised and educated.

On April 17, 1937, he married Mildred  Jackson in Milford. For 40 years he was a self-employed cabinetmaker carpenter, retiring in 1975.

Mr. Woodrow had a strong belief in God and was an active member of the Garrattsville Presbyterian Church. He served as a church Elder and did many of the refurbishing projects at the church until he moved to Richfield Springs in 1988. He was currently a member of the Church of Christ Uniting, Richfield Springs.

A volunteer firefighter he was the last living charter member of the Garrattsville Volunteer Fire Department.

In his leisure time he loved to play dominoes. When he was younger he was an avid fisherman and hunter. He always kept busy with projects around his home and also enjoyed helping his neighbors. To those who knew him, he will be truly missed.

Surviving are his wife of 65 years, Mildred; one son, Robert W. Woodrow Jr., and his wife, Margaret, of Richfield Springs; four grandchildren, Robert Joseph and his wife, Carrie Woodrow, of Hawaii, Jane Catherine Smith and her husband, Chance, of Camden, N.C., Emily J. Woodrow of Portland, Ore., and Peter James Woodrow of Richfield Springs; two great-grandchildren, Kaylynn and Weston Smith; and several nieces, nephews and two cousins.

Besides his parents; two brothers, Samuel and Gordon Woodrow, preceded him in death.

The family will be present in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James St., Richfield Springs, to receive relatives and friends on Friday afternoon from 2 until 4 p.m.

Funeral services will be at 7 p.m. on Friday evening in the Church of Christ Uniting, Richfield Springs, with the Rev. William Harkins, pastor, officiating.

Mr. Woodrow will be laid to rest in Butternut Valley Cemetery, Garrattsville, next spring.

Memorial donations may be made to the Garrattsville Presbyterian Church or the Church of Christ Uniting, Richfield Springs. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.

Florence Washburn

MARLBOROUGH, Mass. — Mrs. Florence S. Washburn, 87 years, of Marlborough, Mass., formerly of Oneonta, N.Y., died Sunday, Dec. 22, 2002, at Marlborough Hospital, Marlborough, Mass.

She was born Feb. 18, 1915, in Oneonta, the daughter of Irving and Minerva (Johnson) Stevens.

She married Homer C. Washburn on April 1, 1933, in Kingston, N.Y. Mr. Washburn predeceased her on Sept. 4, 1988.

Florence worked as a cook at S.U.C.O. for 22 years, retiring in 1980. She lived most of her life in the Oneonta area, until her retirement. After her retirement, she moved to Modena to live with her daughter until her death.

She was a member of the Salvation Army Corps. Homer and Florence celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary by renewing their wedding vows at the Oneonta Salvation Citadel in 1983.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Clesson and Judy Washburn of Sleepy Hollow, N.Y.; four grandchildren and their spouses, Harry and Marsha Zindle of Marlborough, Mass., Theodore and Patricia Townsend of Marlborough, Mass., Mrs. Kathrine and Andrew Bialko of New York, and Mrs. Jean and Anthony Genovese of New York; eight great-grandchildren; 13 great-great-grandchildren; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Florence was predeceased by her daughter, Dorothy Finch; three sisters, Bertha Passer, Minnie Roberts and Ruth Cole; two brothers, William and Joseph Stevens.

Funeral and burial services will be private in the spring at the Oneonta Plains Cemetery, Oneonta.

Calling hours will be offered on Friday, Dec. 27, 2002, at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, from 6 to 8 p.m. A short prayer service will be held at 7:30 p.m.

It has been requested that in lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the Oneonta Salvation Army Citadel, 25 River St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820 in loving memory of Florence S. Washburn.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Robert J. Phillips

HOBART — Robert J. Phillips, 73, of Hobart, died Dec. 23, 2002, at O'Connor Hospital, Delhi, following a lengthy illness.

He was born July 24, 1929, in Kingston, the son of Rudolph and Mary (Cline) Phillips.

Mr. Phillips was employed in shipping for Hunts Point Market of the Bronx, moving to Hobart in 1990.

He was a member of Most Precious Blood of Jesus Church in South Kortright and most recently Sacred Heart Church, Stamford, and the Stamford-Hobart Senior Citizens.

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth, of Hobart; a stepson, Richard and his wife, Mary Allcroft, Staten Island; two stepdaughters, Teresa and her husband, Nicholas Cubria, Staten Island, and Helen and her husband, Daniel Danilczyk, Lynbrook, Long Island; a granddaughter, Elizabeth of Staten Island; and three grandsons, Michael, James and Joseph of Lynbrook, and a great-granddaughter, Hailey Cubria; a sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Robert Drotos, Bandera,  Texas; nephews, William Clements, Falls Church, Va., Robert Clements, Tuscan, Ariz., James Clements, Arlington, Mass.; a niece, Ann Marie Miller, Norfolk, Neb.; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

A sister, Dolores Clements; and a brother, Donald Carney predeceased him.

A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Friday, Dec. 27, 2002, at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, Stamford, with the Rev. Fr. Anthony Ligato as celebrant.

Calling hours will be on Thursday, Dec. 26, 2002, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Burial will follow the service at Sacred Heart Cemetery, Stamford.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Lillian Rae Eitzen

HYDE PARK — Lillian Rae Eitzen, 95, a 75-year area resident and formerly of Accord, died Saturday, Dec. 21, 2002, at St. Francis Hospital, Poughkeepsie.

Mrs. Eitzen was an employee of the Hudson River State Hospital for approximately 40 years until her retirement.

She was a member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church for over 60 years. She was also a Sunday school teacher at St. John's and a member of the ECLA (the church's ladies auxiliary).

She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Shekomeko Chapter 815, Pleasant Valley, for over 40 years; active with the Hyde Park Senior Citizens at St. James' Episcopal Church; a member of the National Grange for 60 years; and a member of the Dutchess County Pomona Grange No. 32. At one time, she was active in the Hyde Park PTA.

Born in Accord, on Sept. 3, 1907, she was the daughter of Charles and Mary Catherine Baker Osterhoudt.

On Sept. 16, 1933, in the Chapel at the Hudson River State Hospital, she married August Eitzen. Mr. Eitzen died in 1973.

Survivors include three children, Doris Howard of Cooperstown, Jay Eitzen of Hyde Park and Jo Ann D'Agostino of Hyde Park; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by a sister, Lulu Booth, in 1982.

Calling hours are from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 26, 2002, at Sweet's Funeral Home Inc., Route 9, Hyde Park. The Shekomeko Chapter of the Eastern Star will conduct services at 8 p.m. during the evening calling hours.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 27, 2002, at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Wilbur Boulevard, Poughkeepsie.

Burial will be in the family plot at Union Cemetery, Hyde Park.

Memorial donations may be made to St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 55 Wilbur Blvd., Poughkeepsie, N.Y. 12603.

Juanita S. Peet

ONEONTA — Mrs. Juanita S. Peet, 96, formerly of Laurens, and Orlando, Fla., passed away Monday, Dec. 23, 2002, at the Oneonta Nursing Home.

Juanita was born Dec. 2, 1906, East Guilford, the daughter of Lynn Stilson and Maude Stilson Brightman.

She married T. Wendell Peet April 27, 1929, in Albany.

She graduated from Laurens Central School in 1925, and from Oneonta Normal School in 1928.

Her first three years of teaching were in a one-room schoolhouse in South Hill, Schenevus, with nine students attending. She then left teaching to raise her family. She later returned to teaching and received her BA degree from State University at Oneonta. She taught elementary grades at Laurens Central School for 20 years before retiring in 1975.

She then moved to Orlando, Fla., and enjoyed retirement to the fullest, including cruises to the Holy Land, Bavaria, Hawaii and the Caribbean, as well as bus tours to Nashville and the Carolinas. After 23 years, she returned to Oneonta and lived at Robynwood before entering the Oneonta Nursing Home.

She was a Charter Member of the Laurens American Legion's Auxiliary. She was also a former member of NYS Retired Teachers Association, Laurens Presbyterian Church, College Park Baptist Church in Orlando, Fla., and the Laurens Eastern Star.

She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Richard and Barbara Peet of Zephyrhills, Fla., and Donald and Georgia Peet of Scarborough, Maine; two daughters and son-in-law, Carolyn and Maurice McLaud of Unadilla, and Nancy Fraize of St. Charles, Alaska; 13 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild; two sisters, Mrs. Louise Hare of Oneonta, and Mrs. Doris Pearsall of Orlando, Fla.; one brother, Donald Brightman of Knoxville, Md.; one sister-in-law, Ernestine Brightman of Orlando, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents; her husband; one daughter, Marilyn; her brothers, Gordon and Kendall Brightman; and one grandson, David M. McLaud II.

Funeral services will be at Bookhout Funeral Home, Main Street, Oneonta, Saturday, Dec. 28, 2002, at 11 a.m. Calling hours will be at Bookhout Funeral Home on Friday, Dec. 27, from 7 to 9 p.m. when the family will be in attendance.

Burial will be at the Greater Plains Cemetery in Oneonta, in the spring of 2003.

Lester A. Brigham

ONEONTA — Lester Albert Brigham Jr., 63, formerly of Toddsville, died early Tuesday morning, Dec. 24, 2002, at the New York State Veterans Home in Oxford.

He was born on Dec. 8, 1939, in Maryland, a son of Lester Albert and Helen (Walrath) Brigham.

At one time he was married to the former Mary Anne Shoemaker, who died May 21, 2001.

Raised in Toddsville, Lester attended Cooperstown schools, later receiving his GED.

From 1958 until 1964, he proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps.

Throughout the years, he was employed by the Cooperstown Dairy and then by the New York State Historical Association in the maintenance department at the Fenimore House Museum in Cooperstown.

Lester is survived by his four children, Laurie Brigham of Harpursville, Karen Brigham Bruce, Eddie Brigham and Jackie Brigham, all of Oneonta; seven grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Jane Fahey and her husband, Bernard, of Jordanville and Mrs. Judy Ann Barley and her husband, Richard, of Earlville; one brother, Warren A. Brigham and his wife, Sandra, of Cooperstown; and several aunts and uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his father, Lester Albert Brigham, who died Nov. 25, 1970, his mother, Mrs. Helen Walrath Brigham, who died July 11, 2001; one brother, Richard L. Brigham, who died May 15, 1964; and one sister, Mrs. Helen Brigham Gage, who died March 23, 1955.

A funeral service be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 28, 2002 at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown, with the Rev. Jack Klosheim, pastor of the Community Bible Chapel in Toddsville, officiating.

Burial, with military honors, will be held at a later date in the Hartwick Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to the American Lung Association of Mid-New York, 311 Turner St., Suite 415, Utica, N.Y. 13501 or the American Cancer Society, 31 Adams Ave., Endicott, N.Y. 13760.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.
