Barbara Samuelson

8/29/2004 - Barbara A. Samuelson, 72, of 430 E. Ave., Falconer, formerly of 86 Myrtle St., Jamestown, died at 1:45 a.m. Saturday (Aug. 28, 2004) in the home of her daughter. A lifelong area resident, she was born Dec. 12, 1931, in Jamestown, the daughter of the late Eric and Annia C. Lundgren Shellman.

Before her retirement, she was a prep cook for Quality Markets, working at the Foote Avenue store for 11 years. In earlier years, she was a cook and waitress for several area restaurants in the Jamestown area.

Her family will remember her as an avid Buffalo Bills fan and Chicago Cubs fan. She also loved to watch the hummingbirds as they flew around near her home. She was a 54-year member of the Thule Lodge 127 VASA Order of America.

Surviving are two daughters: Deborah Swan of Jamestown and Nancy Pantall of Falconer; a son, Steven A. Samuelson of Cassadaga; four grandchildren: Joshua Swan of Jamestown, Jeremy, Cody and Jonna Samuelson, all of Cassadaga; and a sister, Sonya Kench of Deleware, Ohio.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Gilbert G. "Sam" Samuelson, whom she married Nov. 28, 1953, and who died Feb. 3, 2001.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday in the Lind Funeral Home. The Rev. Mary L. Krahn, chaplain of Hospice Chautauqua County, will officiate. Friends will be received for one hour prior to the service on Monday in the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Hospice Chautauqua County, 4840 W. Lake Road, Mayville, N.Y., 14757.

Barbara Seither

9/16/2004 - YOUNGSVILLE - Barbara Jean Seither, 74, formerly of 312 Park Ave., died at 10:30 a.m. Monday (Sept. 13, 2004) in the Rouse Home, Youngsville. She was born Feb. 18, 1930, in Warren, the daughter of Fred and Bernice Kinkead Streich.

She was a 1948 graduate of Warren High School and a 1951 graduate of Huron Road Hospital School of Nursing in Cleveland. She had been employed as a registered nurse by Warren General Hospital, where she served as nursing supervisor, retiring in 1991. She was one of the first instructors for the Advanced Life Support program.

She was a member of Emanuel United Church of Christ and its Triangle Class and 55-Plus Club. She served as a volunteer in the kitchen at the Salvation Army for many years, Meals on Wheels, the Warren Senior Center RUOK program and the F-43 club while attending high school.

She is survived by two daughters: Donna Risinger and Kathy Hawk, both of Warren; two sons: Allyn Seither of Warren and Steven Seither of Clarendon, Pa; 11 grandchildren; a brother, Edwin L. Streich of Sugar Grove, Pa.; and two sisters: Marjorie Schumann of Warren and Katherine  Johnson of Horn Lake, Miss.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Helen Streich.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. today in the Peterson-Blick Funeral Home. The Rev. Neil Siefert, pastor of Emanuel United Church of Christ, will officiate. Burial will be in Warren County Memorial Park.

Memorials may be made to Emanuel United Church of Christ; or the Independence Way Alzheimer's Wing of the Rouse Home.

Barry Finch Sr.

7/30/2004 - Barry Richard Finch Sr., 52, of 33 Bush St., died at 6:40 a.m. Thursday (July 29, 2004) in WCA Hospital. A lifelong area resident, he was born Jan. 27, 1952, in Busti, the son of the late Raymond and Gladys Pedersen Finch Sr.

He was a 20-year employee of Bush Industries and previously worked at the former Firches Bakery. He attended New Heights United Methodist Church and was a member of Herman Kent Post 777 American Legion, Sons of the Legion.

He will be remembered for his famous chicken barbecue. An avid NASCAR and football fan, he followed Jeff Gordon and the New York Jets. He enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren, and four wheeling, fishing and hunting.

He is survived by his wife, Debra Michael Finch, whom he married May 13, 1972; a daughter, Paula Kendall of Sinclairville; three sons: Barry Jr., and William Finch, both of Jamestown, and Joseph Finch of Busti; seven grandchildren: Terry, Tanya, Ashley Kendall, all of Sinclairville, Collin and Xander Finch and Preston Finch-Grekulak, all of Jamestown, and Shania Finch of Sherman; three brothers: Ray "Sonny" Finch of Jamestown, Larry Finch of Rocky Point, N.C., and Tim Finch of Russell, Pa.; and three sisters: Jean Ickes of Youngsville, Pa., Diane Davis of King George, Va., and Bonnie Piazza of Falconer.

He was preceded in death by his father, who died March 13, 1996; and his mother, who died April 7, 1993.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Lind Funeral Home. Pastor Gordon Robbins of New Heights United Methodist Church will officiate.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday in the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Hospice Chautauqua County, 4840 W. Lake Road, Mayville, N.Y., 14757.

Barry Smith

10/15/2004 - WARREN - Barry Lee Smith, 52, of 85 McKinley Ave., died at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday (Oct. 12, 2004) in St. Vincent Health Care Center. He was born Oct. 1, 1952, in Harrisburg, Pa., the son of Kenneth Smith and Lorraine Ziegler Smith.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during the Vietnam era. He graduated from Penn State University with a bachelor's degree in political science, and earned his juris doctorate degree from Ohio Northern University. He had been employed as an attorney in Warren for 23 years. He was a member of the Eagle Club, the Moose Lodge and was past president of the  Pennsylvania Bar Association.

Besides his father of Elmira and his mother of Harrisburg, he is survived by a son, Steve Smith of Warren; a daughter, Susan Smith of New York City; and a half-sister, Tina McVie of Elmira.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Peterson-Blick Funeral Home Inc. The Rev. Nancy Schwanke, pastor of the Interfaith Chapel, will officiate. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.

Bartholomew Oneto

8/24/2004 - Bartholomew "Bart" Joseph Oneto, 55, of 805 W. Fifth St., died Sunday (Aug. 22, 2004) in his home. He was born Dec. 9, 1948, in Albany, the son of the late Fiore Oneto and Rose Luciano Eitleman.

He was a 1969 graduate of Jamestown High School, where he was a member of Braw Caddy Clan, and attended Kansas City Art Institute. He taught art classes at the State College at Fredonia, and owned and operated Frames on Fifth. He was a past member of the Boys Scouts of America, and was very active with the Lucy Museum and Reg Lenna Civic Center.

Bart was an accomplished master frame maker. He started a business, Frames on Fifth five years ago, renovating an early home on Fifth Street. Most of his time and talents was spent helping others and contributing to local charitable organizations. He was the first person to donate funds to the Reg Lenna Civic Center renovation and he designed sets for the first Lucy Festival. Many holidays were spent volunteering at the St. Susan Center. His three children were his greatest love. He will be greatly missed by his friends and family.

He is survived by a son, Maximillian Soule-Oneto of Jamestown; two daughters: Susan Oneto of Philadelphia and Elsbeth Soule-Oneto of Jamestown; a brother, Albert J. Oneto of Boston; a stepbrother, David Eitleman of Tennessee; two sisters: Sarah Williamson of Houston and Frances Schepis of Albany; a stepsister, Barbara Pruitt of Indiana; and his companion, Laura Ludwig of Lakewood.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday in St. James Roman Catholic Church. The Rev. Robert Stolinski, parochial vicar of St. St. James Roman Catholic Church, will be celebrant. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in the Migliore Funeral Home, where a Christian Wake Service will be held at 3:30 p.m.

Memorials may be made to the St. Susan Center; or the Bartholomew Oneto Art Scholarship Fund, c/o Chautauqua Region Community Foundation.

Benjamin Foster

8/14/2004 - PITTSFIELD, Pa. - Benjamin D. Foster, 22, of RD 1, Box 115, died Friday (Aug. 13, 2004) the result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Arrangements will be announced by the McKinney Funeral Home, Youngsville.

Benjamin Galbraith

8/28/2004 - STOCKTON - Benjamin C. Galbraith, 73, of Stockton died Friday (Aug. 27, 2004) at home. He was the husband of the late Geraldine Tranmer.

Arrangements will be announced by the Jordan Funeral Home, Sinclairville.

Bernice Knorr

2/26/2005 - Bernice I. Knorr, 87, of 2212 Swanson Road, died at 3:52 a.m. Friday (Feb. 25, 2005) in WCA Hospital. She was the widow of Earle C. Knorr, who died Jan. 7, 2002.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by Powers, Present and Sixbey Funeral Home.

Bernice Runfola

10/10/2004 - FREDONIA - Bernice A. Runfola, 74, of 9969 Farrell Road, Fredonia, died Thursday (Oct. 7, 2004) in her home. She was born Sept. 30, 1926, in Buffalo, the daughter of the late Florin and Celia Atzrott. She lived in Buffalo for 65 years before living 15 years in Fredonia with her children.

She was a housewife and a member of Holy Angels Church, Buffalo.

She is survived by three daughters: Linda Trudeay of East Amherst, Patricia Anderson of Fort Erie, Ontario, and Holly Difransisco of Fredonia; two sons: Jim and Russell Runfola, both of Fredonia; seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel J. Runfola, who died in 1976; two stepdaughters: Rosaria Sally Merlow of Buffalo and Paula Sirianni of Tonawanda; and a stepson, Joseph Runfola of Buffalo.

The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Holy Angels Church, Porter Avenue, Buffalo, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Internment will be private.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.

Bertha Hansen

8/19/2004 - Bertha B. Hansen, 96, of 259 Forest Ave., died at 2:29 p.m. Wednesday (Aug. 18, 2004) in the Lutheran Retirement Home. A resident of Jamestown since 1926, she was born Nov. 25, 1907, in Rena, Norway, the daughter of Albert and Birgetha Bue.

She was a member of the New Heights United Methodist Church which was formerly Brooklyn Heights United Methodist Church.

She will be remembered as a loving and caring wife, mother and grandmother. Her family was the central focus of her life. She will also be remembered for her love of animals of all kinds.

She is survived by two sons, Rolf K. Hansen of Lakewood and Morris H. Hansen of South Lake Tahoe,  Calif.; and two grandsons, David J. Bain of Batavia and Douglas K. Bain of Akron.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Krist H. Hansen, whom she married in August 1934, and who died Aug. 26, 1972; a daughter, Norma Bain, who died in 2000; and a sister, Ella B. Berg, who died in 1945.

A private service will be held at the convenience of the family.

Visitation will not be observed.

Memorials may be made to the Chautauqua County Humane Society, 2825 Strunk Road, Jamestown, N.Y., 14701; or the Salvation Army, P.O. Box 368, Jamestown, N.Y., 14701.

Arrangements are by the Lind Funeral Home.

Bertha Willsie

9/1/2004 - Bertha Jeannette Spooner Willsie, 83, died Saturday (Aug. 28, 2004) in the home of her daughter in Raleigh, N.C. She was born on May 15, 1921, in the town of Harmony, the daughter of Frank William and Jeannette Clarissa Bergstresser Spooner.

A lifelong resident of Chautauqua County, she was a 1938 graduate and valedictorian of the former Lakewood High School. She earned a bachelor's of arts degree from The College of Wooster, Wooster, Ohio, where she was a member of Phi Sigma Iota and Phi Beta Kappa. She earned a master's of arts degree in French from Cornell University in 1947, and did graduate work in Spanish at Western Reserve University, the University of Havana, the State University of Buffalo, and St. Bonaventure University.

She had been employed as a teacher of English, Latin and Spanish at various schools in Chautauqua County, including Bemus Point Central, Alfred University Extension, Falconer High School, Panama Central, and Jamestown High School. From 1964 until retirement in 1976, she was head of the foreign language department for the Jamestown Public School system. Following retirement, she as she taught summer classes at Chautauqua Institution, led the Spanish conversation group at the Chautauqua Women's Club, and did private tutoring.

She was a charter member of the Elizabeth Warner Marvin House, in Jamestown, where she served both as a member of the junior board and the governing board. She was an active member and past matron of Acanthus Chapter 127 Order of the Eastern Star, where she served as district deputy in 1988 and as secretary for a number of years. In earlier years, she was a member of the First Methodist Church in Jamestown, and in later years, a 50-year member of the Hurlbut Memorial Community Church in Chautauqua, where she was an active member, taught Sunday School, helped with junior church, served as chair of the administrative board and as a member of numerous committees.

She was a member American Organist Guild, a life member of the International Order of King's Daughters and Sons, and a life membership of the New York State Retired Teachers' Association. She served as president and chairperson of the scholarship committee for Kappa Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, an international honorary society for women in education, and was a member of the Board of Education for Chautauqua Central School from 1972 to 1977, and recognized in Outstanding Educators of America and Who's Who in American Women. She was also a member of the Jamestown Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Fenton Historical Society, and the Chautauqua Historical Society.

Most importantly, Bertha had an abiding sense of doing right by others and maintained this as a focus for all of her endeavors. She was a loving and faithful daughter, sister, wife, mother, aunt, grandmother and friend, and her lessons of hard work, determination, faith and unfailing commitment to her family are cherished by those she leaves behind. A life-long animal lover, Bertha also leaves behind two faithful cats, Thomasina and Caspian, who looked after her to the end.

She is survived by a daughter, Anita Willsie Kerr of Raleigh; and two granddaughters: Jeannette Clarissa Peregrine Kerr and Catharine Vida Kerr.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert L. Willsie, whom she married June 30, 1951, and who died in 1994; and a sister, Bonita Enid Spooner Nearpass, who died in 1979.

The funeral service and Holy Eucharistic will be celebrated at 2 p.m. today in The Church of the Nativity, 8849 Ray Road, Raleigh. A service will also be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Lind Funeral Home. Burial will be in Magnolia Cemetery.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday in the funeral home, where a Acanthus Chapter 127 Order of the Eastern Star service will be held at 7 p.m. and a Daughter of the American Revolution service will be held at 7:30 p.m.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Wake County; or The Church of the Nativity, Raleigh, N.C.; or Hospice of Chautauqua County, 4840 W. Lake Road, Mayville, N.Y., 14757; or the Elizabeth Warner Marvin House, 2 W. Fifth St., Jamestown, N.Y., 14701; or the Hurlbut Memorial Community Church, Chautauqua, N.Y.; or a charity of choice.

Bessie Ricotta

7/6/2004 - A Mass of Christian Burial for Bessie R. Calalesina Ricotta, 83, of 97 Warwick Road, WE, who died Sunday (July 4, 2004) in WCA Hospital, will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in St. John Roman Catholic Church. The Rev. Joseph Gullo, pastor of Our Lady of Loreto in Falconer and St. John Roman Catholic Church, will be celebrant. Burial will be on Mount Olivet Cemetery, Falconer. Friends will be received from 4 to 8 p.m. today in the Migliore Funeral Home. A Christian Wake Service will be conducted at 9:30 a.m. Thursday in the funeral home.

She was born July 26, 1920, in Jamestown, the daughter of Charles and Mary Felanzo Calalesina.

She had been employed by Robert Hall Clothes, Truck Lite, and retired in 2002 from Head Start, where she had been a foster grandparent. She was a member of St. John Roman Catholic Church.

Bessie was a loving and caring woman, who enjoyed baking, cooking, and the company of her family and friends. She touched the hearts of many and extended her love to all those she knew.

She is survived by two daughters: Mary Ann Spoto of Jamestown and Joanne Shapiro of West Palm Beach, Fla.; two grandchildren: Jay Robert Spoto of Boynton Beach, Fla., and Anne Marie Spoto of Jamestown; and two brothers: Anthony and Clarence Calalesina, both of Jamestown.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Ricotta, who died Jan. 20, 1984.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society; or a charity of choice.

Betsey Zentz

12/23/2004 - DUNKIRK - Betsey C. Zentz, 82, of Dunkirk, died Tuesday (Dec. 21, 2004) in Brooks Memorial Hospital. She was born April 23, 1922, in Dunkirk, the daughter of Fred A. and Bess Haley Awald.

She was a graduate of Dunkirk High School, and a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving from 1940 to 1943. She had been employed by Sidy's for 50 years.

She was loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who will be sadly missed by her family. She enjoyed playing bingo, senior citizens and volunteered delivering Meals on Wheels.

She is survived by two daughters: Sharon Anderson of Erie and Robin Zentz of Jamestown; five grandchildren: John Krebs of Naples, Fla., Scott Zentz of Durham, N.C., Shannon and Jessica Anderson, both of Erie, and Jason Lusczak of Cassadaga; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 40 years, William S. Zentz, whom she married July 10, 1943, in Dunkirk, and who died Feb. 24, 1984; and a sister.

The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday in the Orcutt-Timko Funeral Home, 504 Central Ave., Dunkirk. The Rev. Clifford Cliver, pastor of the Dunkirk First united Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery in Fredonia.

Friends will be received from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday in the funeral home.
