Edwin H. Benedict

CLINTON, Conn. — Edwin H. Benedict, 74, of Morgan Park passed away Monday, Dec. 30, 2002.

He was a retired graphic arts teacher, local printer and active member of the Clinton Fire Department.

Besides his wife, Dorothy A. Benedict, he is survived by his father, Homer A. Benedict, his brother Clayton Benedict, and his children, Dale Wyble, Edwin Benedict Jr., Jane Busenbark, Ann Jones, Laura Wyble, Joan Armel, John Benedict, Carol Waterbury, Karl Benedict, 20 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

There are no calling hours.

Services will be at 11 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 4, at the Methodist Church in Clinton.

Memorial gifts may be made to Connecticut Hospice, 100 Double Beach Road, Branford CT 06405, or the Clinton Volunteer Fire Department, 35 East Main St., Clinton CT 06413.

The Swan Funeral Home, 80 E. Main St., Clinton, is in charge of arrangements.

Clinton Finch

MARGARETVILLE — Clinton (Buck) Finch, 86, of Margaretville, died Tuesday, Dec. 21, 3002, at Kingston Hospital in Kingston.

He was born Oct. 30, 1916, in the town of Ashland to Wilber and Jennie (Ford) Finch.

He married Helen E. Kelly on Sept. 17, 1944, at the United Methodist Church in Fleischmanns.

He was a sergeant in the U.S. Army from 1940 to 1944 and a drill instructor at West Point Academy.

He was a retired police officer and had worked for the towns of Middletown and Harpersfield and the villages of Stamford and Fleischmanns. He was a foreman at Belleayre Mountain Ski Center when it was being built. He was an honorary member of the Delaware County Sheriff's Department after serving as a deputy for several years.

Clinton was a lifelong area resident. He enjoyed hunting, target shooting, reading and watching John Wayne movies.

He is survived by his wife, Helen E. Finch of Margaretville; son, Carson Finch of Kingston; daughter-in-law Kathleen Finch of Margaretville; daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Ronald Hull of Margaretville; daughter, Sharon Finch of New Hampshire; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by three brothers and a sister.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 3, 2003, at the Advent Christian Church in Margaretville with the Rev. S. Hayden Walsh officiating.

Burial will be later in Clovesville Cemetery in Fleischmanns.

Friends may call at the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville after 1 p.m. Thursday. The family will be in attendance from 7 to 9 p.m.

In memory of Clinton Finch, memorials may be given to the Memorial Fund of the Advent Christian Church, Margaretville.

Arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Ida Mae Chittum

BLOOMVILLE — Ida Mae Chittum, nee Hoover, died in her sleep Sunday, Dec. 1, 2002, at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Samme Chittum-Torum and Brad Torum in Bloomville.

At her request, her ashes will be scattered this spring along with those of her late husband, James R. Chittum.

Mrs. Chittum was born April 6, 1918, in North Canton, Stark County, Ohio.

She and her husband and family lived in various places in the United States and Panama, but her heart was in the Ozarks where she spent her childhood.

Her love for all living things as well as her warm sense of humor are evident in her many published children's books, including "The Cat's Pajamas," "Farmer Hoo and the Baboons," "Clabber Biscuits," "The Ghost Boy of El Torro," "The Secretes of Madame Rene," "The Hermit Boy," "Tales of Terror" and "The Thing Without a Name." She received the Lewis Carol Shelf Award of the University of Wisconsin and an award of recognition for her outstanding contribution to children's literature from Central Missouri State University.

She was a popular speaker beloved by the many school children she visited along with her talking mynah, Poo Bah. She also wrote and published poetry. She was an expert storyteller who could make you laugh or shiver in horror or do both at the same time.

By her own account, the mother of five was inspired to throw down her broom and take up writing when she received a check for her first published story, "Willy's Money," in Highlights magazine.

Ida, who was educated through the eighth grade in a one-room school house, was a prolific reader and advocate of literacy. She was instrumental in bringing a library to her longtime home of Findlay, Ill., and was the first woman to act as commencement speaker at Findlay High School.

She was active in hospital work, the American Legion Auxiliary, Cub Scouts and Brownies. She was a friend to stray animals, wildlife and a tireless comforter of the sick and defender of the downtrodden.

Ida was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend to many who loved her dearly.

She was preceded in death by her husband and friend, James Robert Chittum, who died March 26, 1999; her loving daughter, Rosalind Chittum-Lawrence, who died May 5, 1981; her parents, Harry A. and Lucetta Ida Klingaman-Hoover; siblings, Grace Hoover-Schrader, Ethel Hoover-Lawrence, Helen Hoover-Wilde, Charles Hoover, Robert Hoover, Lucille Hoover-Mino, Edith Hoover-Shottenkirk and Vera Hoover-Tumminelli.

Surviving are James H. Chittum and wife, Freda Chittum of Franklin, Thomas W. Chittum and wife, Christine Chittum of Gaithersburg, Md., Edith Chittum-Dallinger and Richard Dallinger of Crawfordsville, Ind., Samme Chittum-Torum and Brad Torum of Bloomville; son-in-law, Tom Lawrence of Los Angeles,  Calif.; grandsons, R.J. and Gregory Dallinger of Crawfordsville, Ind.; granddaughters, Sherri Lawrence-Adams of Waikapu, Hawaii, Linda Lawrence-Seedon of Oak Grove,  Calif.; great-granddaughter, Robin Ferguson of Honolulu, Hawaii; great-grandson, Conner Seedon; sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy and Rene Barrath of Bartonville, Ill.; sisters-in-law, Helen Henry Hoover of Sterling, Ill., L. Pearl Henry-Hoover of Rock Island, Ill., and 14 nieces and nephews.

William S. Dickison

BURLINGTON FLATS — William Sidney Dickison, 68, of Bresee Road in Burlington Flats, died Wednesday night, Jan. 1, 2003, surrounded by his family at his home.

Bill was born on Oct. 7, 1934, in The Somerset Hospital in Somerville, N.J., a son of Lyle ("Buck") Sidney Dickison and Florence Ward Dickison.

He married Barbara O'Brien on April 13, 1974, in Fly Creek.

Raised in Hartwick, Bill attended local schools, and then became employed by the Knox School Riding Academy in Cooperstown.

In March of 1953, he entered the Armed Forces of the United States and proudly served his country until March of 1956, when he was honorably discharged from the United States Army.

Upon leaving the military, he settled in New Jersey, where he was employed in various capacities. In 1971, he returned to the Cooperstown area. As a machine operator for Remington Arms, he was employed in Ilion, until moving in 1987, to their plant in Buffalo. He retired in 1993 and moved to Burlington Flats in 1994. Until three years ago, he was employed part-time for Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown, where he also served as a volunteer.

Bill truly enjoyed all of nature, especially watching hummingbirds in the spring months of the year. He possessed a great love for fishing and hunting, as well as reading, metal detecting and playing cards. Loved by many for his sense of humor, Bill was a prankster, and will be especially remembered for his many practical jokes. He will be greatly missed by all whose lives he touched.

Bill is survived by his wife of 28 years, Barbara, of Burlington Flats; two sons, Keith Dickison and his fiance, Shirley Trinkaus, of Burlington Flats, and Kevin Dickison of Monticello; four daughters, Nellie Kuhn Marino of Hartwick, Patricia Kuhn Pagillo and her husband, Thomas, of Mount Vision, Karen Kuhn Hill and Doug Bordinger, of New Lisbon, and Elizabeth Dickison Zimmerman and her husband, Mark, of Hartwick; 15 grandchildren; one sister, Sandra Dickison Laymon Steele Hunt Toy Jarrell Marr Tedesco of Brattleboro, N.C.; his mother and father-in-law, Betty and Bob O'Brien of Cooperstown; two brothers-in-law, Tony Gugluizza of Parlin, N.J., and Bill O'Brien and his wife, Jeanne, of Richfield Springs; two sisters-in-law, Shirley Ward of Bridgewater, N.J., and Deborah Gentry and her husband, Robert, of Wilmington, Del.; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and a special cousin, John Davidson of Hartwick.

In addition to his parents, Bill was predeceased by a brother, Ray Ward; a sister, Nancy Gugluizza; and a niece, Tracy Steele.

A Funeral Service will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 5, 2003, at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown, with the Rev. Douglas S. Burleigh, chaplain of Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown, officiating.

Burial will take place at a later date in the spring of this year in the Hartwick Seminary Cemetery.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 4, 2003, at the funeral home, when Bill's family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to either The Louis Busch Hager Cancer Center or The Tribute Fund, Bassett Healthcare, 1 Atwell Road, Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Ralph E. Lent

OTEGO — Ralph Emerson Lent, 79, of Otego died Saturday, Dec. 28, 2002, at the New York State Veterans Home, Oxford.

He was born April 7, 1923, in Otego, the son of Sherman and Elizabeth (Callahan) Lent.

He married the former Grace Kilquist on July 7, 1947, in Farmingdale on Long Island at her families home.

Ralph was a 1940 graduate of Otego Central School. During high school he was active in the Boy Scouts, Boy's State and sports.

After his marriage in 1947, he attended Houghton College in New York, receiving his BA degree in 1951. He taught social studies at various schools in Jasper and Hancock, Honesdale, Pa., Conklin and Camp Brace in Masonville.

He had been a reporter with the Deposit Courier, Deposit, and a welfare worker for Delaware County. Ralph had worked also at one time for Bendix Scintilla in Sidney as a tool and die maker. He also held a brokers license at one time. Later he became a custodian at Hartwick College, Oneonta Savings and Loan and the office building on Main and Chestnut Street in Oneonta.

A World War II veteran of the United States Army he spent seven months in a German Prison Camp and was liberated and brought home in 1946.

He was a member of the Otego Baptist Church and was active in Christian work.

Ralph is survived by his wife, Grace K. Lent, of Riverview Home, Unadilla; a sister, Edith Lent Earl of Sidney; two sisters-in-law; several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews, uncles, aunts and cousins.

Funeral and committal services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2003, from the Otego Baptist Church, Main Street, Otego, with the Rev. Alan C. Hatch, retired pastor of the Otego Baptist Church officiating and be assisted by the Rev. Craig Merritt and the Rev. Michael Amos.

Friends may call at the Otego Baptist Church from 1 to 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2003, prior to the service when the family will be present.

Burial will be held in the spring of 2003, at the Otego Evergreen Cemetery, Otego.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be given to Elizabeth Hatch for her prison ministries, care of 37606 Landis Ave., Zephyrhills, FL 33541 or the New York State Veterans Home, 4211 State Highway 220, Oxford, NY, in memory of Ralph Emerson Lent.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home Inc., 123 Main St., Unadilla.

Sidney Chamberlain

SCHENEVUS — Sidney E. Chamberlain, 73, died unexpectedly on Monday, Dec. 9, 2002, at his home.

He was born July 16, 1929, in Westford, the son of the late Carl and Blanche (Judkins) Chamberlain.

He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran serving from 1948 to 1952. He served in Korea and obtained the rank of Staff Sergeant.

Sid was employed by Otsego County Highway Department for 20 years. He also at one time worked for Holland Furnace in Oneonta and Doc Ginther in Maryland as a well driller.

He was a member of the Schenevus VFW Post 2752.

Survivors include his wife, Marie M. (Carroza) Chamberlain, who he married on June 29, 1952, at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Schenevus; son, Warren Chamberlain of Schenevus; grandchildren, Robyn and Tanner Chamberlain of Las Vegas, Nev.; two sisters, Lydia and her husband, Bob Fay of Syracuse and Mary Lou and her husband, Jim Coty of La Fayette; two brothers, Ray Chamberlain of Syracuse and Adelbert Chamberlain of Mesa, Ariz.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a son, Kevin; three brothers, Carl, Julain and Richard; a sister, Ione; and a nephew, Richard.

The memorial service will be 2 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 11, 2003, at the Schenevus United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Thomas Snyder, pastor and the Rev. Rose Bellen, pastor of the Westville Methodist Church, officiating.

There will be no calling hours.

Burial with full military honors will be in Schenevus Cemetery at a later date.

Memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Arrangements are by the Heller Funeral Home, 25 Arch St., Schenevus.

Lorenzo Colegrove

EDMESTON — Lorenzo Colegrove, 89, of Edmeston died Monday, Dec. 30, 2002, in Utica.

He was born Aug. 8, 1913, in Edmeston, son of J. Hugh and Abbie T. (Simmons) Colegrove.

He married Catherine Hamm at home in 1936. She predeceased him in 1989.

Lorenzo used to operated a dairy farm in Edmeston that is still operated by his family today. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Edmeston, past member of the Edmeston Grange and had enjoyed working as a carpenter in the church and around Edmeston.

Lorenzo will be remembered by his family for his willingness to help others in time of need and for being an avid outdoorsman, who loved hunting, trapping and fishing. He enjoyed making maple syrup with much help from his family and neighbors, and encouraged all to taste jack wax.

Lorenzo is survived by his three children, John Colegrove, Wesley Colegrove and Caroline Olds; seven grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 3, 2003, at the United Methodist Church in Edmeston, with the Rev. Jay Noll officiating.

Calling hours were from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 2, 2003, at the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston.

Interment will be in the spring at Edmeston Union Cemetery.

Contributions may be made in Lorenzo's memory to either the United Methodist Church in Edmeston, or the Edmeston Emergency Squad.

Arrangements are by the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston.

Cecil B. Field

HAMDEN — Cecil B. Field, 79, of Basin Clove, Hamden, passed away Thursday morning, Jan. 2, 2003, at O'Connor Hospital, Delhi.

The son of Bert A. and Harriet (Shove) Field, he was born Oct. 20, 1923, in Mount Vision, was a graduate of Mount Vision High School and was a WWII U.S. Army veteran, serving in the Pacific.

His 1948 marriage to Ann M. Blackman ended in divorce and, on Dec. 25, 1976, he married Elizabeth B. (Cole) Van Valkenburg.

Formerly of Hartwick, Cecil moved to Delhi in 1973, where he was employed as a supervisor at the former Delwood creamery, retiring in 1985. A Hamden resident since 1977, he subsequently moved to Countryside Care Center in 1994.

He was a member of the Hamden Fish and Game Club.

Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth B. Field; his five children, John Field, Bainbridge, Tom Field, Oneonta, William Field, Meridale, Mary Rosenthal, Delhi, Donald Field, Oneonta; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren; three stepchildren, Philip Van Valkenburg, Mount Vision, Michael Van Valkenburg, Salem, Va., Anna Cuyler, Clarence; a brother, Harry Field, Binghamton; two sisters, Eveleen Sheldon, Harpursville and Frances Beagle, Oneonta; nieces and nephews.

Friends are invited to call 7 to 9 p.m. this evening at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi, when the family will be in attendance, and where funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday Jan. 4, by the Rev. Jeffrey Staples.

Burial will be later in the Hartwick Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Humane Society of Central Delaware County, Delhi.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet & Son, Delhi.
