William S. Dickison

BURLINGTON FLATS — William Sidney Dickison, 68, of Bresee Road in Burlington Flats, died Wednesday night, Jan. 1, 2003, surrounded by his family at his home.

Bill was born on Oct. 7, 1934, in The Somerset Hospital in Somerville, N.J., a son of Lyle ("Buck") Sidney Dickison and Florence Ward Dickison.

He married Barbara O'Brien on April 13, 1974, in Fly Creek.

Raised in Hartwick, Bill attended local schools, and then became employed by the Knox School Riding Academy in Cooperstown.

In March of 1953, he entered the Armed Forces of the United States and proudly served his country until March of 1956, when he was honorably discharged from the United States Army.

Upon leaving the military, he settled in New Jersey, where he was employed in various capacities. In 1971, he returned to the Cooperstown area. As a machine operator for Remington Arms, he was employed in Ilion, until moving in 1987, to its plant in Buffalo. He retired in 1993 and moved to Burlington Flats in 1994. Until three years ago, he was employed part-time for Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown, where he also served as a volunteer.

Bill truly enjoyed all of nature, especially watching hummingbirds in the spring months of the year. He possessed a great love for fishing and hunting, as well as reading, metal detecting and playing cards. Loved by many for his sense of humor, Bill was a prankster, and will be especially remembered for his many practical jokes. He will be greatly missed by all whose lives he touched.

Bill is survived by his wife of 28 years, Barbara, of Burlington Flats; two sons, Keith Dickison and his fianceι, Shirley Trinkaus, of Burlington Flats, and Kevin Dickison of Monticello; four daughters, Nellie Kuhn Marino of Hartwick, Patricia Kuhn Pagillo and her husband, Thomas, of Mount Vision, Karen Kuhn Hill and Doug Bordinger, of New Lisbon, and Elizabeth Dickison Zimmerman and her husband, Mark, of Hartwick; 15 grandchildren; one sister, Sandra Dickison Laymon Steele Hunt Toy Jarrell Marr Tedesco of Brattleboro, N.C.; his mother and father-in-law, Betty and Bob O'Brien of Cooperstown; two brothers-in-law, Tony Gugluizza of Parlin, N.J., and Bill O'Brien and his wife, Jeanne, of Richfield Springs; two sisters-in-law, Shirley Ward of Bridgewater, N.J., and Deborah Gentry and her husband, Robert, of Wilmington, Del.; several nieces, nephews and cousins, and a special cousin, John Davidson of Hartwick.

In addition to his parents, Bill was predeceased by a brother, Ray Ward; a sister, Nancy Gugluizza; and a niece, Tracy Steele.

A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 5, 2003, at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown, with the Rev. Douglas S. Burleigh, chaplain of Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown, officiating.

Burial will take place at a later date in the spring of this year in the Hartwick Seminary Cemetery.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 4, 2003, at the funeral home, when Bill's family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to either The Louis Busch Hager Cancer Center or The Tribute Fund, Bassett Healthcare, 1 Atwell Road, Cooperstown, NY 13326.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

David J. Land

UNADILLA — David J. Land, 59, of state Route 7 in Unadilla passed away peacefully Friday evening, Jan. 3, 2003, at his residence.

He was born Aug. 31, 1943, in Chicago, Ill., the son of the late David and Lorraine Saylor Land. On June 19, 1965 he married Margaret M. Kelly in Elmhurst.

David was a resident of the Tri-Town area for the past 22 years. David was a veteran of Vietnam. He was a computer operator for the Brooklyn Union Gas Co., Brooklyn.

David was a member of the Sacred Heart Church and the Knights of Columbus Council 4937 in Sidney. He was a founding member of the Gilead Community and House of Prayer, Unadilla.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret "Peggy" Land of Unadilla; three sons and daughters-in-law, David W. and Jackie Land of Rome, Sean J. Land and fiance Stacy Sperbeck of East Worcester, Robert P. and Traci Land of Birmingham, Ala.; a daughter, Elizabeth McCoy of Milford, New York; five grandchildren, Chelsea and Casey Land, Heather and Alyssa McCoy and Oliver Land; sister, Barbara Strickland of Austin,  Texas.

A sister, Shirley G. Dennis. predeceased him. Also surviving are nieces, nephews and cousins.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2003, from the Sacred Heart Church, Sidney, with the Rev. Fr. Gordon Polenz, pastor, and the Rev. Fr. J. Thomas Connery, Glenville, officiating. Burial will be in the spring in the Prospect Hill Cemetary, Sidney.

Friends are invited to call at the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel 21 Main Street, Sidney, from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Montoday with his family in attendance.

Memorial gifts in his name may be directed to The Gilead House of Prayer, 1011 State Highway 7, Unadilla, NY 13849.

Donald J. Sutton

SCHENEVUS — Donald Joseph Sutton, 63, died Friday, Jan. 3, 2003, at his home.

Donald was born May 21, 1939, in Maryland, the son of the late William and Minnie (Livingston) Sutton.

He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving from 1956 to 1963.

He was employed by Ungerman Electric in Albany for 20 years.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy J. (Hill) Sutton, who he married on March 25, 1962 at Dog Hill Road in Maryland; three sons, Christopher Sutton of Albany, William Sutton of Troy, Leslie Sutton & wife, Colleen Walker-Sutton of Virginia Beach, Va; two grandchildren, Jacquelynne Sutton of Schenevus and William Douglas Sutton of Orlando, Fla; two sisters: Marion Walrath of Maryland and Marge Vaughan of Wells Bridge; one brother: Robert Sutton Sr. of Maryland; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Sonny and Ed and a sister, Elizabeth.

Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 8, and again on Thursday, Jan. 9, from noon until the funeral service at 2 p.m. at Heller Funeral Home, Schenevus, with the Rev. Thomas Snyder, pastor of the Schenevus United Methodist Church, officiating.

Burial with full military honors will be in Maryland Cemetery at a later date.

At the family's request, memorials may be made to Catskill Area Hospice, Inc. & Palliative Care,, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Arrangements are by the Heller Funeral Home, 25 Arch St., Schenevus.

Alta Mae Dunshee

WALTON — Alta Mae Thomas Dunshee, 93, who resided at the A.O. Fox Nursing Home in Oneonta, went to be with the Lord on Jan. 4, 2003.

Alta was born in Sidney Center on Nov. 10, 1909, to Allison and Mabel DuMond Thomas.

Alta married Franklyn H. Dunshee in Walton on May 29, 1930.

She is survived by two daughters, Joyce M. Gohl of Norwich and Blanch (Jim) Powers of Unadilla, 10 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, three step- great-grandchildren, four great- grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

Franklyn H. Dunshee, husband; son William Douglas Dunshee, daughter Elizabeth Robinson, great-grandchild Kaitlyn Marie Dunshee and three sisters, Mrs. Dorothy Meres, Mrs. Marguerite Whitbeck and Mrs. Annebelle Furgason and daughter-in-law Madge Dunshee predeceased our Mom.

Alta was a housewife and mother. She took care of the elderly. Alta was a member of the Sidney United Methodist Church and the Sidney Senior Club. One of her favorite things was quilting and crocheting for her children, her church and the senior club.

There will be a service at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2003, at Lyon Bros.-Way Funeral Chapel, corner of North and Delaware streets, Walton, where family will receive friends from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.

Contributions may be made in our Mom's name to a favorite charity of yours.

Anne Novick

DELHI — Anne Novick, 83, of Arbuckle Hollow, Delhi, passed away peacefully at her home Friday night, Jan. 3, 2003.

The daughter of Nicholas and Katherine (Palka) Skilny, she was born June 9, 1919, in New York City, and married Alexander J. Novick on Nov. 27, 1938 in Holy Trinity Russian Orthodox Church, Brooklyn.

A homemaker, Anne lived in Brooklyn most of her life, where she was a member of the Sisterhood of Holy Trinity Church, and had been a Delhi resident for the past 25 years, where she and her husband have been active participants in Senior Citizens.

Surviving are her husband of 65 years, Alexander J. Novick; a daughter and son-in-law, Katherine and Robert Weidner, Naples, Fla. and Roscoe; two grandchildren, Kathy (Walter) Gorski, Branchville, N.J., and Gregory (Julie) Weidner M.D., Charlotte, N.C.; and four great-grandchildren.

Friends are invited to call from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 8, when the family will be in attendance at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi. Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home by the Rev. Timm Holowatch, pastor of St. Innocent Orthodox Mission Church, Oneonta. Burial will be later in the Woodland Cemetery.

Memorial contributions to Delhi Senior Citizens Activity Fund will be appreciated.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet & Son, Delhi.

Ray J. Weaver

ANDES — Ray J. Weaver, 79, of Mud Lake Road, Andes, died Jan. 5, 2003, at Achieve Rehab Center in Liberty.

Ray was born Sept. 30, 1923, in Union Grove, town of Andes. The son of Ira and Maud May McBride Weaver, he married Sarah C. Soules on June 24, 1945, in Arena.

A lifelong Andes resident, Ray was an operating engineer in construction affiliated with Local 825 Operating Engineers of Middletown.

Survivors are his wife, Sarah, of Andes; three sons, Robert L. of Andes, Allen R. of Hillsdale and Mark of Oneonta; a daughter, Virginia Weaver of Andes; 10 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, 14 step-grand- children and step-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2003, at the Jester-Stanley Funeral Home in Andes, with the Rev. Robert Engelhardt, pastor of the Catskill Mt. Christian Center, Margaretville, officiating. Burial will be in Shavertown Cemetary in the spring.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 5 to 7 p.m. today, when the family will be in attendance.

Memorials to the Catskill Mt. Christian Center in the name of Ray Weaver are appreciated.

Norma Worley

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — Norma Louise Havener Worley of Williamsburg, Va., passed away on Dec. 31, 2002.

Mrs. Worley was born in Rockland, Maine, on March 4, 1922, the daughter of Francis E. and Edna K. Havener.

As one of five children in a musical family, she always had a great fondness for her native state of Maine.

In 1942, she met musician and composer John C. Worley, who was performing at Maine's Samoset Hotel. The couple was wed at the Methodist Church (now part of the Farnsworth Art Museum) in Rockland, Maine, in 1943; they were married for more than 50 years. They raised three children, making their home in a number of locations including Greenwich, Conn.; Oneonta, N.Y.; East Brewster, Mass.; Owl's Head, Maine; and Williamsburg, Va.

Mrs. Worley will be remembered as a vibrant woman of great beauty and charm. Her athleticism and love of nature, music, her church and her children led her to support a variety of educational, religious and cultural organizations. In her earlier years, she worked as a Girl Scout leader, a summer camp aide, a volunteer for musical organizations and was the proprietor of an antiques shop. For many years, she was an active member of the Christian Science Church.

Norma Worley is especially cherished for her joyful approach to life and for her unselfish devotion to her family and friends. She was exceedingly proud of her family's accomplishments in the arts, in business and in education. After her husband's passing in 1999, she was unafraid to face life on her own and was most grateful for supportive friends in Williamsburg.

Mrs. Worley was honored to be loved by family and friends and held them all close to her heart. She would not want anyone to grieve on her behalf, but would encourage all who care about her to embrace life with a sense of joy, gratitude and continuing progress.

She is survived by her children and their spouses, Susan (Worley) and Eric Thacher of Potsdam, N.Y., Karen (Worley) and Brad Handley of Reston, Va., and Peter and Susan Worley of Thousand Oaks,  Calif.; by grandchildren Jeffrey, Andrew, Laura, J.B., Kelsey and Sam; by great-grandchildren Casey, Sam and Jamison; and by sisters Margaret (Havener) Calderwood and Beverly (Havener) Sterritt and brother Francis Havener.

In lieu of flowers and ceremonies, the family asks that friends honor Norma Worley in whatever way is most meaningful to them.

Charles E. Skokan Jr.

OTEGO — Charles "Chuck" Skokan, 64, of Otego went to be with the Lord, Sunday, Jan. 5, 2003, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

He was born Jan. 24, 1938, in Schenectady, N.Y., the son of Charles E. and Melvina (Tietz) Skokan Sr.

Chuck was a veteran of the U.S. Navy for six years and the Navel Reserves in Binghamton for 10 years.

On Jan. 14, 1973, Charles married Phyllis VanBuren; they shared 29 years of marriage.

Charles worked as a security guard for several businesses in the Oneonta, Morris, Sidney and the surrounding areas for several years.

He loved hunting, fishing, working outdoors at his home and especially loved camping and doing security at the East Sidney Dam. He attended the River Street Baptist Church in Oneonta.

He is survived by his loving wife, Phyllis Skokan of Otego; his three children and son-in-law, Susan and Fred Foti of Galway, Barbara Ann  White of Weedsport and Charles D. Skokan of Port Byron, N.Y.; his three stepchildren and their spouses, Timothy and Pam VanBuren of Davenport, Randy and Sandy VanBuren of Gilbertsville and David and Susan VanBuren of Otego; his sister, Judith Skokan of Ballston Spa; 15 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; as well as numerous brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews. Charles was predeceased by his parents, Charles E. and Melvina Skokan Sr.

Funeral and committal services will be held on Thursday, Jan. 9, 2003, at 11 a.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main Street, Oneonta, with the Rev. Mel Farmer, pastor of the River Street Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be in the spring at the Oneonta Plains Cemetery, Oneonta. Calling hours will be offered on Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2003, at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m., at which time the family will be in attendance.

Memorial contributions may be made to either the American Heart Association, Hearts Gifts Processing Center, P.O. Box 3049, Syracuse, NY 13220-3049 or to the American Cancer Society, 31 Adams Ave., Endicott, NY 13760 in loving memory of Charles E. Skokan Jr.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Mabel Hafele Ploutz

WALTON — Mabel Hafele Ploutz, 84, of Walton passed away peacefully Monday morning Jan. 6, 2003, at Wilson Memorial Hospital,  Johnson City, N.Y., after a short illness. She was born March 20, 1918, in Bovina Center, N.Y., the youngest daughter of Harvey and Mary Cliff (Flynn) Hafele.

The family moved to Delhi in 1924, and she spent her early years in Delhi.

She graduated from Delaware Academy in 1938 and worked at Volks Creamery Store.

In 1941, she married Leland Ploutz Sr. and moved to Sidney, where they both worked at Scintilla. After the war, they moved back to Delhi and ran a gas station/garage on Route 10. In 1947, they bought the Octagon Farm in Hamden.

Mabel belonged to the American Legion Auxiliary and was president of Post 32 and Delaware County chairman of the Auxiliary. She was assistant leader of the Country Cousins 4-H Club; and member of the Card Club, Chambers Hollow Craft Club and Hamden Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Leland and Marian Ploutz Jr., and granddaughter, Amanda Ploutz, of Walton, N.Y., and several nieces and nephews.

Her husband, Leland Sr., predeceased her Jan. 1, 1990. Five brothers also predeceased her, Ray at infancy, Leroy, William, Harvey and Charles; and two sisters, Edna Shaver and Ida Baldwin.

Funeral services will take place on Friday, Jan. 10, 2003, at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi, N.Y., at 2 p.m. with Rev. Bert More officiating.

Calling hours will be on Thursday, Jan. 9, 2003, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be later in Woodland Cemetery, Delhi, N.Y.

Contributions in her memory may be made to Walton Emergency Squad or the American Heart Association.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

William C. Kimmey

MOUNT VISION — Mr. William Charles Kimmey, 83, of Mount Vision died Sunday afternoon, Jan. 5, 2003, at the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

William was born on Dec. 1, 1919, in Lawyersville, N.Y., a son of Harvey and Jennie (Young) Kimmey. He married Kathrine Miller on Oct. 30, 1943, at home in Mount Vision.

Raised in the Cobleskill area, William graduated from Cobleskill Central School and then went on to graduate from Cobleskill Agricultural and Technical School. A dairy farmer for more than 45 years, he was a member of the Dairylea Milk Cooperative, the Cooperative Extension, was a leader in 4-H activities and was a 60-year member of the Otsego Valley Grange.

A devoted Christian, William played the organ for the True Church of Christ on Sharon Hill for many years.

He was a beloved husband and an adoring father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was also a wonderful friend and neighbor and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

William is survived by his wife of 59 years, Kathrine, of Mount Vision; one daughter, Carol Dustin, and her husband, Allen, of Averill Park; one son, Robert D. Kimmey, and his wife, Becky, of Walden; one brother-in-law, Gladys Harrison, of Windsor; six grandchildren, David Kimmey and his wife, Dina, of Walden, Bill Kimmey and his wife, Wendy, of Jersey City, N.J., Jason Kimmey and his wife, Michele, of Ellenville, Daniel Kimmey and his wife, Dee, of Walden, Joseph Kimmey of Walden and Heather Kimmey of Pine Bush; 6 great-grandchildren; two nephews, Duane Harrison of Windsor and Lynn Harrison of Arlington,  Texas; and two nieces, Sally Miller of Buffalo and Margie Dennin of Selkirk.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 9, 2003, at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown, with Pastor Christopher Ellis of the Bible Baptist Church in Mount Vision officiating. Burial will take place at a later date in the spring of this year in the Mount Vision Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday evening, Jan. 8, 2003, from 7 to 9 p.m. when William's family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to the Bible Baptist Church, P.O. Box 606, Mount Vision, NY 13810 or the Hartwick Emergency Squad, P.O. Box 2008, Hartwick, NY 13348.

Henry McAdams

MARYLAND — Henry "Hank" McAdams, 85, died Sunday, Jan. 5, 2003, at his residence.

Hank was born July 28, 1917, in Maryland, the son of the late Herbert and May (Harvey) McAdams.

He was employed as a security guard for the Albany Police Force.

He is survived by a son, John C. Kenyon of Maryland; two grandsons; five great-grandchildren; two sisters and a brother.

At Hank's request there will be no calling hours or funeral service and burial will be in Maryland Cemetery at a later date.

Arrangements are by the Heller Funeral Home, 25 Arch St., Schenevus.
