Joseph J. Caperna
MASONVILLE — Joseph J. Caperna, 71, of Masonville passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2003, at his home.
He was born March 31, 1931, in Norfolk, Va., son of John Caperna and Cora Loferno.
Joe served his country in the United States Marine Corps and was a recipient of the Purple Heart and the Conspicuous Service Award on July 23, 1990.
He was employed as a union sheet metal worker in Mineola, when he retired.
Joe was a member of the Sidney Assembly of God.
He is survived by wife, Marie Caperna of Masonville; mother, Cora Caperna of College Point; four sons and daughters-in-law, Keith and Rita Caperna of Huntington, Paul and Katherine Caperna of East Setauket, Craig Caperna of Coram and Mark Caperna of West Babylon; six daughters and sons-in-law, Susan and Dieu Tran of Holbrook, Lisa and Frank Garmita of Holbrook, Jodi and Scott Gunther of Babylon, Dina Caperna of Huntington, Ann Day of Bethpage, and Marie Ceraso of Maspeth. "He was our Father." Two sisters, Marie Plunkett of Queens, and Ann and Ed Raul of Bethpage; 12 grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.
Memorial services will be held Saturday, Jan. 11, 2003, at the Sidney Assembly of God at noon, with the Rev. Randy Eliason, pastor, officiating.

Concetta Cappello
BOVINA — Concetta "Connie" Cappello, 86, of Bovina, passed away peacefully on Thursday morning, Jan. 9, 2003, at Robinson Terrace, Stamford.
The daughter of Lawrence and Amelia (Fasanella) Scerbo, she was born March 12, 1916, in New York City, where she married Joseph Cappello on March 24, 1946. He died April 5, 1978.
Formerly of Astoria, Connie was a homemaker and moved to Bovina in 1981 where she lived with her daughter's family.
Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Amelia "Lil" and Louis Aulicino, Bovina; a son, John Cappello, Ozone Park; four grandchildren, Louis J. Aulicino, Oneonta, Kim, Jessica and John Cappello Jr., Long Island; one great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends are invited to call 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., today, at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi, when the family will be in attendance.
A Requiem Celebration of the Holy Eucharist will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 11, from her late parish, St. James' Episcopal Church, Lake Delaware. The Rev. Jason Catania will preside and burial will be later in the Bovina Cemetery.
Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet & Son, Delhi.
Eugene A. Bettiol Jr.
ONEONTA — Eugene A. Bettiol Jr., 47, of Oneonta, died Friday, Jan. 10, 2003, at his residence in Oneonta after a courageous battle with cancer.
He was born Sept. 1, 1955, in Sidney, the son of Eugene and Elizabeth Bettiol. He married Patricia Patton on June 7, 1980, in Oneonta.
A lifelong area resident of Otego and Oneonta, Gene worked as an entrepreneur, real estate developer, president of Bettiol Fuel Service and president of Bettiol Enterprises Inc.
One of his greatest motivators in his professional life was his belief in the endless possibilities for the Oneonta area. He was able to carry out many of these visions by his participation as chairman of the board of the Future for Oneonta Foundation, being a board member of the National Soccer Hall of Fame and as a founding member of the Foothills Performing Arts Center.
During his leisure time his greatest joy was spending time with his family. He was especially happy to be with his wife and two beautiful daughters, Carleigh and Brooke, and was proud to support them in all that they did in life.
He is survived by his wife of 22 years, Patricia Bettiol of Oneonta, his daughters, Carleigh and Brooke Bettiol of Oneonta; his parents, Eugene and Elizabeth Bettiol of Oneonta; two sisters, Janet Laytham and her children Ryan, Amanda and Scott of Otego, and Jaci Michelitsch, her husband, Helmut, and son, Eric, of Oneonta. He is also survived by several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, in-laws and cousins.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 14, at the Otego Presbyterian Church, 16 River St., Otego, with the Rev. Fred Albrecht officiating.
Friends may call at the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta, at their convenience after 1 p.m. Monday. The family will be in attendance from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.
It has been requested that, in lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the following organizations that were so important to Gene: Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta; FOF, PO Box 134, Oneonta; National Soccer Hall of Fame, 18 Stadium Circle, Oneonta; Foothills Performing Arts Center, PO Box 977, Oneonta, or to the Otego Presbyterian Church, 16 River St., Otego.

Richard J. Burroughs
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Richard John Burroughs, 69, of Daytona Beach, formerly of Schenevus and Herkimer, a retired sales manager for John's Appliance, died Monday at Manor on the Green.
Mr. Burroughs moved here in 1982 from his native New York where he attended Draper High School and Utica Technical College. He served in the Army during the Korean War. Mr. Burroughs was a member of the National Rifleman's Association and was an avid outdoorsman.
He was preceded in death be his wife, Gail.
Survivors include his sons, John of Daytona Beach, Rick and Daniel, both of New York; mother, Gladys, of New York; brother, George, of Virginia, and six grandchildren.
Interment will be in Cooperstown.

Theodore M. Hurwitz
ONEONTA — Theodore M. Hurwitz, 92, of Oneonta died Thursday, Jan. 9, 2003, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.
He was born July 4, 1910, in New York City, the son of Maxmillian and Elizabeth (Stenwyck) Hurwitz. He married Sophie E. Kristofik on Aug. 12, 1929. She died after 63 years of marriage on Feb. 23, 1993.
Ted was a graduate of Brooklyn Tech and attended Pratt Institute in New York City.
He was a member of the Battery A 244th Coast Artillery of the National Guard, and later served with Company G 10th Infantry. He was also a member of the company's basketball team.
For a period of 27 years, he worked in the signal department of the D&H Railroad He also worked for 10 years with the Hartwick College security force.
He was well known in the Fraternal Order of Eagles, having served as president of the local unit. He then went on to state president, and finally was elected to eastern regional president. He also chaired many of the national organization committees.
He was the recipient of the top honor in Eagledom, the Bell Ringer Award, as was his wife, Sophie.
He was a member of St. Mary's Church, and besides being a member of the Eagles, he was also a member of the Oneonta Elks.
Ted is survived by his daughter, Eileen Colone of Oneonta; two grandsons, William Colone and his friend, Sarah Pyper of Phoenix, Ariz., and David Colone, and his friend Melissa Christoff of Phoenix, Ariz.; a great-granddaughter, Samantha Susan Colone, also of Phoenix, Ariz.
He was predeceased by a granddaughter and a son-in-law, Susan Colone and Herman Colone.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Monday, Jan. 13, 2003, at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Church with the Rev. Thomas Babiuch, associate pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the spring in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.
Friends may call Sunday, Jan. 12, 2003, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta, at which time the family will be in attendance.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary's Church.

Kay A. Baker
JEFFERSON — Kay Austin Baker, 57, of Taber Road, Jefferson, passed away peacefully at her residence on Thursday, Jan. 9, 2003, after a brave battle with cancer.
She was born April 14, 1945, in Jefferson, the daughter of Harold E. and Virginia E. (Harris) Austin.
A longtime area resident, Kay was employed as supervisor at Graham Laboratories/Mallinckrodt in Hobart. She especially loved to spend weekends with Tyrone, Jennifer and Ashley. She was passionate about decorating her home for every holiday. Christmas was her favorite, but she also loved visiting area casinos and going to garage sales in the summer.
She is survived by her companion, Tyrone Boyce; daughters, Kathryn and Anita DaCruz; stepchildren, Terence, Tyrone Jr., Amanda and Jennifer Boyce; granddaughter Ashley Blain; grandson Aiden Covert.
Also five sisters, Mrs. Estella Wynkoop, Mrs. Shirley Reim, June and Norwood Tompkins, Linda and Scott Allen, Ginna and Carl Marlow; and three brothers, Robert and Elaine Austin, William and Patricia Austin, James and Delores Austin; and many nieces, nephews and close friends survive.
Her parents; brothers, Richard Austin, Harold Austin Jr.; sister, Gloria Todd, and beloved son, Richard Thomas DaCruz, predeceased her.
Funeral services will take place on Monday, Jan. 13, 2003, at 11 a.m. at the United Methodist Church of Stamford, with the Rev. Lawrence Charles officiating.
Calling hours will be on Sunday, Jan. 12, 2003, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home in Hobart.
Burial will be at Stamford Cemetery, Stamford.

Irene S. Hendrickson
FRANKLIN — Irene S. Hendrickson, 77, of Franklin, died Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2003, at her residence.
She was born Feb. 24, 1925, in the Bronx, the daughter of Harry and Sophie Kozlowski. She was married to Elwyn Hendrickson, who died in 1963.
Irene was employed at At-A-Glance in Sidney for 25 years.
She was a member of Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in Sidney.
She is survived by her children and their spouses, Donna and Ian Pickup of Barbados, West Indies, and John and Candy Hendrickson of Oneonta; and a granddaughter, Sophie Pickup of England.
She was predeceased by a son, Thomas Hendrickson, and a grandson, Jared Hendrickson.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2003, at 1 p.m. at the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin, with the Rev. Gordon Polenz, pastor of Sacred Heart Church, officiating.
Burial will be in the spring in the Ouleout Valley Cemetery, Franklin.
Friends may call on Monday evening at the funeral home from 6 to 8 at which time the family will be in attendance.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice.

Maurice J. Bradley
SUMMIT — Maurice J. "Brad" Bradley, 73, of Wharton Hollow Road, died Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2003, at his residence.
Mr. Bradley was born Sept. 30, 1929, in Summit, the son of Maurice and Meretta (Zea) Bradley.
Mr. Bradley was a graduate of the former Richmondville Central School and lived in Summit most of his life. From 1974 to 1984 he lived in West Palm Beach, Fla., and then moved back to Summit. He was the previous owner of the Red Barn Restaurant and Bar in Summit. Mr. Bradley served on the Summit Town Board and was an avid bowler and outdoorsman.
He was predeceased by his wife, Wanda (Collins) Bradley, who died June 17, 2000.
Survivors include three sons, Keith Bradley of Lake Worth, Fla., Kevin Bradley of Summit and Terry Bradley of East Worcester; a brother, Paul Bradley of Fort White, Fla.; eight grandchildren, Kristina and Thomas Bradley, Shannon and Andy Bradley, Brandon, Hannah, Jackson and Gillian Bradley; and two great-grandchildren, Amanda and Samantha Van Valkenburg.
Services will be private at the family's convenience.
Spring interment will be in the Summit Cemetery.

Dorothy C. Ellsworth
CLIO, Mich. — Dorothy C. Ellsworth, of Clio, Mich., age 84, died on Friday, Jan. 10, 2003, at Genesys Health Park.
Friends may call at the O'Guinn Family Funeral Home in Clio from 4 to 9 p.m. on Sunday.
Burial will be in Hartwick Cemetery, Hartwick, N.Y.

Dorothy was born April 22, 1918, in New York, the daughter of the late Layman and Carrie (Yager) Couse. She had resided in the Clio area since 1960.
Dorothy married Hiram Ellsworth June 18, 1939, in Pennsylvania. He preceded her in death Dec. 24, 1963.
She was employed as a nurse's aide at Frankenmuth Nursing Home and was a licensed beautician at home. She enjoyed taking care of the elderly, plastic canvas work and crocheting.
Surviving are two sons, Bruce and wife, Deborah, Ellsworth of Clio, Roger and wife, Mary, Ellsworth of Florida; and several grandchildren. Dorothy was also preceded in death by four brothers, Floyd, Raymond, Orlo and Harley.
Virginia Bateman
COOPERSTOWN — Virginia Stever Bateman passed away Thursday, Jan. 9, 2003, at The Meadows following complications emanating from her long battle with Alzheimer's Disease.
Virginia was born in New York on Dec. 29, 1921, the only daughter of Edward and Rose Stever. She was raised in Queens and married Charles Bateman on June 29, 1943.
Virginia was employed by the New York Telephone Co., Chase National Bank and was the receptionist at the Allstate Insurance Co.'s headquarters on Long Island.
She moved with her husband, Charlie, to Cooperstown in 1970, as proprietors of Mohican Flowers. She was a ward clerk at the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital for many years; she retired but remained active in the community.
Virginia was a volunteer at the Susquehanna SPCA Better Exchange and as active member of the Clarks Sports Center, enjoyed swimming and walking until the onset of her illness.
She is survived by her husband of 59 years, the Hon. Charles Bateman, Otsego County representative; and her only child, the Hon. Carol Bateman Waller, mayor of the village of Cooperstown and her husband, William. She is also survived by her three grandchildren, William Charles and his wife, Virginia Maxwell, Waller of Arlington, Va., grandson, Scott Edward and his wife, Suzanne Takata, Waller of Lexington, Va., and her granddaughter, Kristin Bateman Waller of Cooperstown; two great-grandchildren, William Maxwell and Jessica Leigh Waller of Arlington, Va.; one brother, Robert and his wife, Ann, Stever of East Meadow on Long Island; and her sister-in-law, Terry Stever of Rockville Centre on Long Island; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her brother Edward Stever.
Virginia was especially fortunate to count among her close friends Kathleen Purcell, Pat Geberth and Lee Malone, the latter two also relocating from Long Island to Cooperstown. The family expresses thanks to these special people and the staff at Woodside Hall and The Meadows for their care of Virginia throughout her long illness.
Virginia was a member of the Cooperstown Fire Department Auxiliary, Criterion Club of Cooperstown and St. Mary's Our Lady of the Lake Roman Catholic Church of Cooperstown.
A vibrant member of Cooperstown's community for many years, Virginia will be remembered at a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary's Our Lady of the Lake Roman Catholic Church in Cooperstown at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003. Officiating will be Fr. John R. Rosson and Fr. John Roos.
Family members ask that attendees come and celebrate her great life and join them afterwards at a reception in the Parish Hall.
There will be no calling hours.
Arrangements are being handled through Tillapaugh Funeral Services, Cooperstown.

F. Carl Frederick
MOUNT VISION — F. Carl Frederick, 85, of Mount Vision died Sunday, Jan. 12, 2003, at Chenango Memorial Hospital, Norwich.
He was born Oct. 15, 1917, in Fardale, N.J., the son of Clarence Winter and Estelle (Fishhelm) Winter.
He married Mildred Judge on July 12, 1939, in Ridgewood, N.J.
He was an electrician with Medical Coaches of Oneonta, retiring in 1980.
He and his wife had resided in the Mount Vision and New Lisbon area for the past 55 years and had formerly resided in Haledon, N.J.
Carl was a member of both the Garrattsville and Hartwick senior citizens clubs. He served as president of the Otsego County Senior Citizens Council for approximately four years and also served on the tax assessment grievance board for the town of New Lisbon for several years.
Carl is survived by his wife, Mildred, of New Lisbon, a marriage of over 63 years; his two daughters, Lorraine Murphy and her husband, James, of Sharon Springs, and Mabelle Covais and her husband, George, of Tampa, Fla.; his son, Barry Frederick and his wife, Elaine, of Morris; nine grandchildren, Joseph Murphy, Terry Matozzi and husband, Dan, Angela Benarick and husband, Chuck, Joseph Santoro, Michelle Truesdell and husband, Gene, Bryce Frederick and wife, Jackie, Tim Covais and wife, Tish, Toby Covais and wife, Holly, and Terry Covais and wife, Fee. Also surviving are 14 great-grandchildren.
A grandson, Scott Frederick predeceased him.
A memorial service for Carl will be on Thursday, Jan. 16, 2003, at 2 p.m. at the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris, with the Rev. Thomas Taylor officiating.
Interment will be at a later date in the Hillington Cemetery, Morris.
There will be no calling hours.
Carl was loved dearly by his large family and will be missed by all of his family and friends.
