Richard A. Wilcox

WINTER PARK, Fla. — Richard A. Wilcox of Winter Park, Fla., passed away Jan. 7, 2003.

He was born May 13, 1935, in Columbus, the son of Floyd G. and Emma (Winton) Wilcox, both deceased.

He married Laura on Dec. 31, 1973. She survives.

He spent his childhood in the Columbus and New Berlin areas. He attended New Berlin Central School.

He was an operating engineer, Local 545, Syracuse.

He was a member of the First Church of God in Eustis, Fla.

Dick loved the outdoors. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, sports, stock car racing, and traveling. Dick loved life and had a great sense of humor. He has left behind many family members and many, many friends.

He is survived by his wife, Laura; children, Richard Wilcox Jr. and wife, Jenise of Newport News, Va., Keith Wilcox and wife, Maria of New Berlin, Debra Kuhn and Ted Church of Williamsburg, Va., James McGowan and wife, Wendy of Cincinnatus, brothers and sister, Floyd G. Wilcox Jr. of Brookfield, Fay Wilcox of Garrattsville, and Elwin (Ike) Wilcox; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He is predeceased by his son, David Wilcox, brother and sisters, Melvin Wilcox, Anna Parks and Bonnie Yankowski.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003, at the Berean Baptist Church in New Berlin, with the Rev. Dwight Kenyon officiating.

Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, New Berlin.

Ruth Fairbairn

MARGARETVILLE — Ruth Fairbairn, 90, of Margaretville passed peacefully in her sleep on Thursday, Jan. 9, 2003, at Countryside Care Center in Delhi.

Ruth was born on March 3, 1912, in Arena, Delaware County. The daughter of the late William and Ella (Ackerly) Close.

On Sept. 17, 1933, she married George Fairbairn in North Chili. They lived most of their married life on the Bull Run, happily tending their trees, gardens, and enjoying their natural peaceful surroundings, until George's death on Jan. 6, 1996.

Mom took great pleasure in her family, church and caretaking the Old Stone Schoolhouse in Dunraven, and seeing to the needs of others by always being available with a helping hand, and a warm meal!

Ruth is survived by her children, daughters, Georgia and her husband, David,  Taylor of New Kingston, Martha and husband, Ronald, Tait of South Kortright; and son, Fredrick Fairbairn and wife, Linda, of Saugerties; eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren; sister, Berna VanBenschoten; and many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts be made in her name to her church of which she was a devoted member, the Advent Christian Church, P.O. Box 545, Margaretville, NY 12455 or to the Old Stone Schoolhouse, care of B. VanBenschoten, P.O. Box 455, Margaretville, NY 12455.

There will be no calling hours.

A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held in the spring at the convenience of the family.

Funeral arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Pauline Cora Lane

ROXBURY — Pauline Cora Lane, 77, of Roxbury, died Jan. 11, 2003, at the Mountainside Residential Care Center, Margaretville.

She was born on June 13, 1925, in Conesville, the daughter of Maurice and Inez (Roe) Voorhees.

She married Christopher Eugene Lane on Jan. 27, 1942. He died March 1, 1974.

Pauline was a former waitress and had lived in Roscoe. She worked at the Roscoe Diner, Roscoe.

She is survived by one son, Eugene Lane of North Carolina; three grandchildren; two brothers, Bruce C. Voorhees of Roxbury and Maurice Voorhees Jr. of Prattsville; two sisters, Norma Shultis of Halcottsville and Beverly Warner of Stamford; several nieces, nephews; and grandnieces and grandnephews.

She was predeceased by two brothers, Claude Voorhees, died 1995, and Seeley Voorhees, died in 1987.

Funeral service will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2003, at the Miller Funeral Home in Roxbury, with the Rev. Richard Dykstra officiating. Callings hours will be Tuesday from 2 p.m. until service time at 3 p.m.

Burial will be in the Lew Beach Cemetery, Lew Beach, at a later date.

Funeral arrangements are by the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury.

Alicia J. Harris

NELLISTON — Alicia J. Harris, 18, a student of Herkimer County Community College, died suddenly on Friday, Jan. 10, 2003, in Rochester as a result of an automobile accident.

She was born on Oct. 15, 1984, in Ilion, a daughter of Patrick A. and Catherine A. (Prill) Harris. A lifelong area resident, she was raised in Jordanville and graduated from Owen D. Young High School this past June.

Alicia was a loving, compassionate young woman who excelled in everything she did. As an honor student, she was a member of the National Honor Society and had received many awards including the Case Leadership Award, Saint James Guild Citizenship Award, Leadership of Tomorrow Scholarship, Buffy Smith Business Award, Honor Student Athlete Award and the Congressional Medal of Merit.

Alicia had attended the Hurricane Island Outward Bound School through the Clark Foundation. While a senior in high school she completed her first-year college credits at Herkimer County Community College. She wanted to major in business administration. She was actively involved in all sports including volleyball, soccer, track and softball.

At 18, she had already completed courses in real estate and had obtained her license. She was working for Pathfinder Realty in East Springfield and at the RiteAid Store in Palatine, as well as being a full-time honor student in Herkimer County Community College.

She enjoyed helping others and volunteered at the Mohawk Y.M.C.A. teen talk-line program. Alicia touched the lives of many, she was a true friend and will never be forgotten.

Surviving are her parents, Catherine A. Prill of Nelliston, Patrick A. Harris of Jordanville; her sister, Kassandra B. Harris of Nelliston; her grandmothers, Joan Prill of Springfield and Gladys Harris of VanHornesville; aunts and uncles, Daniel Prill of Springfield, Kristina Prill of Clifton Park, Gladys and Charles Angelillo of  Pennsylvania, Joseph and Karen Harris of Fulton, Kathleen Harris of Duarte,  Calif., Virginia Harris of Dolgeville; godparents, Winifred Harris of Southold and Wayne Allen of Long Island. She also leaves her boyfriend, Michael Collins, of Jordanville; many cousins and close friends.

She was predeceased by her grandfathers, Russel Prill, E.D.D. and Joseph Harris.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday at 11 a.m. in St. Joseph's Church, Richfield Springs, with the Rev. Terence Healy officiating.

The family will be present in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James St., Richfield Springs on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to the Alicia J. Harris Memorial Scholarship Fund, care of J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, P.O. Box 789, Richfield Springs, NY 13407. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Fred E. Covey

CHERRY VALLEY — Fred E. Covey Sr., 50, of Honey Hill Road, passed away unexpectedly on Friday morning, Jan. 10, 2003, in his home.

He was born on Oct. 30, 1952, in Herkimer, son of Leona Madison Covey and the late James Albert Covey.

A lifelong area resident, he was raised and educated in Mohawk. For a short time he worked for the Mohawk Cemetery Association before he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He served during the Vietnam era and was honorably discharged in March of 1974.

On Aug. 8, 1990, he married Dawn Duncan in Ilion. They have resided in Cherry Valley since 1994.

In Fred's leisure time he enjoyed fishing, hunting and camping. He was happiest when he was surrounded by his many friends and family, especially his 10 grandchildren.

Surviving besides his beloved wife, Dawn, are his mother, Leona Covey of Ilion; three sons, Fred E. Covey Jr., Wallace and his wife, Lisa, Covey, all of Ilion, and Joshua Covey of Norway; one daughter, Carol and her husband, Jeff, Dennis of Schuyler; three stepdaughters, Tonya Steacy of Cherry Valley, Sheila Steacy of Herkimer, and Jayme Steacy of Frankfort; one brother, James A. Covey Jr., of Utica; two sisters and their husbands, Carol and Thomas Jowett of Bridgewater and Katherine and Robert Apel of Utica; 10 grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, cousins; and his good companion and father-in-law, who he loved very much, Frank Duncan Sr.

A funeral service will be at noon Tuesday at the Fenner Funeral Home Inc., 115 Court St., Herkimer, with the Rev. Wrightson Tongue, pastor of the First United Methodist Church in Herkimer-Little Falls, officiating.

The family will be present to receive relatives and friends in the funeral home on Tuesday from 10 a.m. until noon.

Mr. Covey will be laid to rest in Mohawk Cemetery later this spring.

Howard Bart VanderVeen

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Howard Bart VanderVeen, 83, of Perkins Road, town of Richfield passed away peacefully on Friday evening, Jan. 10, 2003, in his home with his loving family by his side.

Howard was born on Nov. 27, 1919, in Werftermoter, Friesland, Holland, son of the late Bart and Agne DeVries VanderVeen.

He was educated in Holland and in American correspondence schools. An honorably discharged U.S. Army veteran, he served our country during World War II.

His first marriage was to Evelyn Newenhuis. She preceded him in death on July 17, 1972.

Mr. VanderVeen had owned and operated the VanderVeen Construction Co. located in both Michigan and Wisconsin. He retired in 1982.

On Oct. 31, 1981, he married Jean Slager Andela in Richfield Springs. They have resided in the town of Richfield since 1984, coming here from Middleville, Mich.

Mr. VanderVeen had a strong belief in God and was a member of the Trinity Christian Reformed Church in Richfield Springs, where he had served as a church elder. He will be greatly missed by many, especially his family.

Surviving are his wife of 21 years, Jean; one son, Sherman H. and his wife, Laurie, VanderVeen of Alvord, Iowa; two daughters, Kathleen and her husband, Raymond, Blough of Middleville, and Faye Ellen VanderVeen of Portland, Ore.; a stepson, James P. Andela of Richfield Springs; two stepdaughters, June Baker of Richfield Springs and Barbara Skar of Grand Rapids, Mich.; two brothers and their wives, John B. and Dorthea VanderVeen of Alto, Mich., and Gustave B. and Jan VanderVeen of Holland, Mich.; two sisters, Theresa Los of Alkorn, Wis., and Angie Termaat of Rock Valley, Iowa; three grandchildren, Benjamin and Bethany Blough of Middleville, Logan VanderVeen of Alvord, Iowa; 12 stepgrandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents and first wife, a stepson, Jeffery Andela preceded him in death in 1991.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Trinity Christian Reformed Church, Richfield Springs, with the Rev. Kenneth Prol, pastor, officiating.

The family will be present in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James St., Richfield Springs, to receive relatives and friends from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. today.

Mr. VanderVeen will be laid to rest in the Twilight Rest Cemetery, Monticello, later this spring.

Memorial donations may be made to the Trinity Christian Reformed Church, Richfield Springs or the Catskill Area Hospice. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Benjamin T. Shaw

SIDNEY — Benjamin T. Shaw, 89, of 96 West Main St., Sidney, and formerly of Delhi, passed away Friday evening, Jan. 10, 2003, at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Binghamton.

He was born June 18, 1913, in the town of Meredith.

On Oct. 18, 1933, he married Dorothy Meres in Meredith.

He was a Sidney resident for the past four years. Mr. Shaw was a longtime member of the Meredith Baptist Church, Meredith.

Mr. and Mrs. Shaw operated a dairy farm in the town of Meredith from 1935 until their retirement in 1968.

Ben was a avid outdoorsman and he especially loved hunting and fishing.

He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Mrs. Dorothy M. Shaw, Sidney; four sons and daughters-in-law, Benjamin H. and Kathryn Shaw of Sidney, Floyd and Lila Shaw of Cookeville, Tenn., Lynn and Jean Shaw of Troy, William and Karen Shaw of Sidney; daughter and son-in-law, Jane and Roger Crooks of Hudson, Fla.; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Sheldon and Theresa Shaw of Delhi, Paul and Joyce Shaw of Delhi, and David Shaw of Delhi; sister and brother-in-law, Betty and George Blanchard of Sidney; 14 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A brother, Oliver Shaw, and a sister, Esther Butler, predeceased him.

Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 16, 2003, from the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, with the Rev. David Masland, pastor of the Sidney United Methodist Church, officiating.

Burial will be in the spring at the Woodland Cemetery, Delhi.

Friends are invited to call at their convenience Thursday at the funeral chapel. His family will be in attendance from 1 p.m. until services at 3 p.m.

Memorial gifts in his name may be directed to the charity of one's choice.

Helen D. Johnson

ROCHESTER — Helen D. Johnson, 102, formerly of Cooperstown Junction, passed away Sunday, Jan. 12, 2003, at her granddaughter's home in Rochester.

Mrs.  Johnson was born Dec. 28, 1900, in Gilboa, the daughter of the late James and Lilly (Johnson) Bostwick.

She was a lifelong area resident and at one time was a seamstress for the Dress factory in Oneonta.

She married James Mahar in 1919. He predeceased her in 1927. Then in 1929, she married Freeland  Johnson and in 1986 he predeceased her.

Mrs.  Johnson was a member of the Cooperstown Junction Methodist Church.

She is survived by one sister, Laura Tompskins of Wyoming; 12 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her children, James Mahar, Lillian Carnicelli, and Mary Scott; grandchildren, Larry Carnicelli and Ed Mahar; brothers, Grover Bostwick, Melvin Bostwick and Ellery Bostwick; and a sister, Edith Vibbard.

Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 15, at Heller Funeral Home, Schenevus.

The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 16, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Rodney Johnson, pastor of the Cooperstown Junction Methodist Church, officiating.

Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery in Oneonta at a later date.

Memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Arrangements are by the Heller Funeral Home, 25 Arch St., Schenevus.

Mabel Dye

EDMESTON — Mabel Dye, 88, of Edmeston, died Friday, Jan. 10, 2003, at Chase Nursing Home in New Berlin.

She was born Dec. 15, 1914, in Edmeston, the daughter of Floyd and Mina (Carleton) Rose.

She married Roger L. Dye Sr. on May 21, 1938. He predeceased her on Dec. 19, 1971.

Mabel was a member of the Second Baptist Church in Edmeston. She was dutiful to her church and served

as a deaconess, assistant treasurer, and nursery attendant for many years.

Mabel loved to be surrounded by her family — their interests were her interests. She also enjoyed working outside in her gardens, both vegetable and flower.

Mabel is survived by her children and their spouses, Darryl and Sandra Dye, Rosalee Cadwell, Cheryl and Lauren Maxson, Marjorie and Terry Kline, and Roger and Sheryl Dye; 19 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren; her sisters, Bertha Dockstader, Wilma Bennett and Betty Lou Lamb.

Mabel was predeceased by two children, Ardith and Daniel Dye, one grandson, Thomas Kline, and one great-grandson, Joshua Maxson.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2003, at the Second Baptist Church in Edmeston, with the Rev. Jay Noll officiating. Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. today, Jan. 13, 2003, at the Houk Johnston Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston.

Interment will be in the spring at Edmeston Union Cemetery.

Donations may be made in Mabel's memory to the Second Baptist Church, 7 North St., Edmeston, NY 13335.

Dolores Hope Varney

PHOENIX MILLS — Mrs. Dolores Hope Varney, 79, of Phoenix Mills and formerly of Lake Ronkonkoma, L.I., died late Monday morning, Jan. 13, 2003, at her home.

She was born on May 28, 1923, in Middle Village, Queens, a daughter of Harry and Augusta (Huttie) Gaynor.

She married Charles Ellsworth Varney on Sept. 6, 1943, at Lake Ronkonkoma, L.I. Mr. Varney died on Aug. 13, 1980.

Raised on Long Island, Mrs. Varney graduated from high school in Sayville, L.I.

During World War II, while her husband was serving his country in the Philippines, she was employed in an airplane factory where she tested engines, signing her name on every engine she tested.

During the years when she was involved in the most important job of her life, raising her family of five children, she also worked as a nurse's aide and a laboratory technician at Brookhaven Memorial Hospital. In 1962 she began nursing school at Good Samaritan Hospital in Sayville, graduated as a Licensed Practical Nurse and then worked at Central Islip State Hospital.

In 1971, she and her husband moved to Phoenix Mills and she completed her nursing career at The Meadows, retiring in 1982.

Following her husband's death, she spent several winters in Hartwell, Ga., to be near her daughter, Hope. While there she was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Hartwell and was very active in the Sojourners, a church related group. She was an avid reader and traveled extensively. She also enjoyed collecting lighthouses.

Mrs. Varney is survived by three daughters, Donna Schorf of Milford, Linda Biagini of Hampton, N.H., and Hope Winne of Blue Ridge, Ga.; two sons, Timothy C. Varney of Apoka, Fla., and Paul D. Varney of Cooperstown; 11 grandchildren, Jennifer Schorf of Cobleskill, Christie Schorf-Miller of Worcester, Heather  Woods of Clearwood, Fla., Robert Schorf of Otego, Owen McClinton of Sommersworth, N.H., Leigh Ann Harbin and Christina Mosley, both of Hartwell, Ga., Charles Varney of Winterhaven, Fla., Amber Winne, Scott Winne and Nicole Benedict, all of Blue Ridge, Ga.; two great-grandchildren, Griffin  Woods of Clearwater, Fla., and Kristin Mosley of Hartwell, Ga.; and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 17, 2003, at the Cooperstown United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Thomas J. Snyder, retired United Methodist pastor, officiating.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 on Thursday evening, Jan. 16, 2003, at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown, when Mrs. Varney's family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy, in the form of memorial gifts, may be made to the American Cancer Society, 31 Adams Ave., Endicott, NY 13760 or Catskill Area Hospice Hope Foundation, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.
