Mary S. Butts

ONEONTA — Mary S. Butts, 90, died Monday, Jan. 13, 2003, at Oneonta Nursing Home following a lengthy illness.

She was born April 9, 1912, in Oneonta, to William B. and Edith (Hand) Storer.

She married Ralph W. Butts on Oct. 14, 1936, in Oneonta. Mr. Butts died Sept. 2, 1982.

Mrs. Butts was a 1930 graduate of Oneonta High School and a 1933 graduate of Crouse-Irving School of Nursing in Syracuse. She was a long time employee of Homer Folks Hospital as a registered nurse having retired in 1974.

Mrs. Butts was one of the original founders of the local Alzheimer's Association and entertained the local association summer meeting and annual picnic at her camp on Crumhorn Lake. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Oneonta and the New York State Registered Nurses Association.

She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Wayne (Susan) Earley of Beverly, Mass.; a granddaughter, Deborah Earley of Danvers, Mass., and a grandson, Brian Earley of Beverly, Mass.

Memorial services will be held at the convenience of the family.

Burial will be later in Plains Cemetery, Oneonta. There will be no calling hours.

Contributions may be made in her memory to the Northeastern Alzheimer's Association, State University of New York at Oneonta, Oneonta, NY 13820.

Arrangements are by the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, Oneonta.

John "Doug" Oles

WALTON — John "Doug" Oles of Walton, a lifelong resident, died on Saturday, Jan. 11, 2003, at Wilson Memorial Hospital in  Johnson City. He was 81.

He worked as an auto body repairman for Marlettes Garage in Walton until his retirement.

John was born May 3, 1921, in Walton to Frank and Gertrude Knight Oles.

Mr. Oles served in the Army from 1942 to 1946 as a member of the 499 Fighter Bomber Squadron. Commendations include the Asiatic Pacific Service Medal, Philippine Liberation Ribbon and the World Ward II Victory Medal. He belonged to the VFW in Walton.

John was an avid bowler, serving as the treasurer of the Farmers Bowling League for many years. He also enjoyed fishing and other outdoor activities. He will be remembered for his storytelling, sense of humor and his outgoing personality.

He is survived by his brother Robert; sister Vivian Ostrander; stepdaughter Candace Voorhies; and special friends Dot and Bob Lang and their family. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

His wife, Dorothy Voorhies Oles, predeceased him.

Funeral services were Tuesday at Lyon Bros.-Way Funeral Chapel in Walton.

Donations to the American Heart Association or the charity of your choice in his name would be appreciated.

Robert S. Reeve

PUNTA GORDA, Fla. — Robert S. Reeve, of Punta Gorda, Fla., died Monday, Jan. 13, 2003.

Bob lived in  Jefferson, N.Y., with his wife and three children for many years. He was the owner of Greenwood Auto Body Shop in  Jefferson. While in  Jefferson, Bob enjoyed skiing, boating and his family.

Bob and Marie moved to Punta Gorda, Fla., in 1984, where they enjoyed boating, golf, and numerous activities.

Bob is survived by his wife, Marie Reeve; three children, Kathleen Miller, of  Jefferson, Robert Reeve Jr., of Harpersfield, N.Y., and Carolyn Ellicott of The Woodlands,  Texas.

Bob and Marie have seven wonderful grandchildren, Aaron Miller, Adam Miller, Daniel Miller, Gabriel Miller, Erik Reeve, Chelsie Reeve and Jessica Ellicott.

The family will have a private ceremony later.

Elizabeth S. Bunn

SOUTH HARTWICK — Mrs. Elizabeth ("Betty") S. Bunn, 89, of South Hartwick, died Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2003 at the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

Betty was born on April 11, 1913, in the Town of Burlington Flats, a daughter of Alfred and Elizabeth (Benirschke) Schneider. She married Kenneth A. Bunn on May 29, 1937, in the Rectory of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Cooperstown. Mr. Bunn died Feb. 13, 1972.

A graduate of Hartwick High School, Betty was a lifelong resident of the Hartwick area. For 35 years, she and her husband owned and operated a dairy farm in South Hartwick where she had made her home up to the present. She was also employed for many years as a cashier in the Health Bar at Bresee's Department Store in Oneonta.

Betty was a positive role model, especially through serving as a 4-H leader, as a member of the South Hartwick Community Club, and as a member and treasurer of the Hartwick United Methodist Church. Throughout her life, she had a positive relationship with friends and neighbors for whom she always had time and was eager to lend a helping hand. It was her philosophy not to talk about problems, but rather to work toward solutions.

Betty is survived by her children, Louise Lauria and her husband, Rocco, of New Berlin, Kenneth Victor Bunn and his wife Leanne, of Oroville, Wash., Maurice H. Bunn and his wife, Cathleen, of Steamboat Springs,  Colo., and Helen Bunn of Oneonta; one sister, Mrs. Margaret Cady and her husband, Kenneth, of Hartwick; two sisters-in-law, Thelma Bunn, of Hartwick, and Catherine (Simpson) Schneider of Georgia; eight grandchildren, Melody Ainsworth, Brian Lauria, Jeffrey Lauria, Teresa Hickling, Kevin Lauria, Christophe Bunn, Anthony Bunn, and Star Banner; 10 great-grandchildren, Joseph Ainsworth, Brittany Ainsworth, Micah Lauria, Sarah Lauria, Brandon Lauria, Chelsea Lauria, Brie Hickling, Ashley Hickling, Chauntel Hickling, and Hanalei Bunn; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by her brother, Alfred Schneider Jr.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 17, 2003 at the Hartwick United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Roger G. Yoder, pastor, officiating.

Burial will take place at the convenience of the family later this spring in the Hartwick Cemetery,

There will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to the Hartwick Emergency Squad, P.O. Box 208, Hartwick, NY 13348 or the Hartwick United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 576, Mount Vision, NY 13810.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Raymond W. Williams

SHARON SPRINGS — Mr. Raymond W. Williams, 83, of Buel Road, Sharon Springs, died Tuesday evening, Jan. 14, 2003, following a long illness.

He was born in the Town of East Fishkill on Feb. 18, 1919, to Barney and Bertha Williams. He attended the Stormville Mountain School.

Mr. Williams was employed as a night cleaner at Beech-nut and Life Savers in Canajoharie for 30 years until his retirement.

He was of the Episcopalian faith, enjoyed gardening and caring for his flowers and taking care of many different animals.

He was married on June 13, 1987, to Alice S. Williams, who survives at home.

He is also survived by three sons, Raymond W. Williams Jr., Larry R. Williams and Richard H. Williams, all of Canajoharie; a daughter, Barbara A. Pitcher, of Canajoharie; several stepchildren; two sisters, Elizabeth Willoughby of Herkimer and Beatrice Grannemann of Stuart, Fla.; three grandchildren, two close grandchildren, David Parkinson Jr., and Ray-Jay Henderson Jr., both of Sharon Springs; eight step-grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by two grandchildren, Christy Eldredge and Kevin Williams.

Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 18 at the Chapel of Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home Inc., 20 Otsego St., Canajoharie, with the Rev. Wayne Cole officiating.

Burial will be private at the convenience of the family.

The family will receive friends and relatives from 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 18 at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the National Kidney Foundation of Northeast New York, 23 Computer Drive East, Albany, NY 12205-1134.

Edwin F. Anderson

CANAJOHARIE — Mr. Edwin F. Anderson, 85, of Shunk Road, Canajoharie, N.Y., died suddenly Monday, Jan. 13, 2003, at home.

He was born at Union Hill, N. J., on Feb. 24, 1917, to Warren and Irene Hill Anderson.

He was a graduate of Union Hill High School, Class of 1936.

Mr. Anderson was employed as a night supervisor at Life Savers in Canajoharie for more than 23 years, retiring in 1981.

He was married on June 15, 1941, in Troy, N.Y. to Helen Smith Anderson.

An area resident since 1946, he was a former resident of Watervliet, N.Y.

A veteran of World War II, he served in the United States Navy as a 2nd Class Petty Office during the Invasion of Okinawa in 1945.

He was a member and deacon of the Canajoharie Reformed Church. He was a member of the church's consistory for nine years. He was a former member of Hamilton Lodge No. 79, F&AM and enjoyed spending time with his family and working in his garden.

He is survived by his wife, Helen Elizabeth Anderson, of Canajoharie; three sons, Edwin Robert Anderson of Albany, Ga., Howard Warren Anderson of Cobleskill, N.Y., and David Raymond Anderson of Canajoharie; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

There will be a funeral service at 10 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 17, at the Chapel of Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home Inc., 20 Otsego St., Canajoharie with the Rev. Lisa VanderWal officiating.

Burial will be in Ames Cemetery in the spring.

The family will receive friends and relatives on Thursday, Jan. 16, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Ames Volunteer Fire Department, 595 Latimer Hill Rd., Canajoharie, NY 13317 or the Salvation Army, Empire State Division, 200 Twin Oaks Dr., Syracuse, NY 13206.

Stanley J. Nurek

UNADILLA — Stanley J. Nurek, 83, of 140 Sanly Road, Unadilla, N.Y., passed away unexpectedly Monday evening, Jan. 13, 2003 at The Villages Hospital, in Leesburg, Fla.

He was born Jan. 30, 1919, in South Bend, Ind., the son of the late Frank and Florence Oscard Nurek.

On Jan. 30, 1944, he married Helen Zaczek in Deposit, N.Y. Mr. and Mrs. Nurek owned and operated the Algonkin Motel in Bainbridge, N.Y., for several years. He also was a bus driver for the Bainbridge-Guilford Central School and Sidney Central School. Stanley was a longtime member of the Loyal Order of the Moose No. 277, Sidney, N.Y.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Helen Nurek, of Unadilla; three sons and a daughter-in-law, David and Beverly Nurek of Apalachin, Gary Nurek of Sebastian, Fla., Steven Nurek of Schenevus; three daughters and sons-in-law, Carol and Wayne Hall of Delhi, Joann and Edward D'Aurora of Monument,  Colo., Barbara and Rick Turner of Bainbridge; a sister, Falcy Kraieski of Endicott, N.Y.; 14 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Two sisters, Mary Nurek and Josephine Nurek, predeceased Stanley.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003 from the Sacred Heart Church, Liberty Street, Sidney, with the Rev. Fr. Gordon Polenz, pastor, officiating.

Burial will be in the Glenwood Cemetery, Afton, N.Y,. in the spring.

Friends are invited to call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at C. H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, with his family in attendance. The Moose Lodge will conduct ritualistic services at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

Memorial gifts in his name may be directed to the Sacred Heart Church, Liberty Street, Sidney, NY 13838.

Kenneth B. Truran

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — The Reverend Kenneth Brend Truran of St. Augustine, Fla., died Saturday, Jan. 11, 2003, at Shands Hospital in Jacksonville, Fla. He was 91.

Born May 13, 1911, in Brewster, N.Y., Kenneth was the son of Harold and Carrie Truran. His daughter, Dorothy Truran preceded him in death.

Rev. Truran was a man of strong Christian faith and gave of himself to the comfort and well being of others for more than 60 years as a Methodist minister. He was a graduate of Brewster High School, Syracuse University and Drew University School of Theology.

Ken served as a pastor in New York State at Peekskill, Hobart, Margaretville, and Verbank, N.Y. He also worked for several years with the Dutchess County Council for the Aging in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. In recent years, he served as visitation pastor at the Shore Methodist Church in St. Augustine, Fla. When Ken was not ministering to others, his time was devoted to gardening, enjoying the wonders of life and entertaining others with his very special humor.

His wife, Shirley, of St. Augustine, survives him; and daughters, Phyllis Truran of Ocean Grove, N.J., Ruth Cutler of Marina del Ray, California; and son, David Truran of Halcottsville, N.Y.; stepdaughters Suzann Maass of St. Augustine, Fla., Stacy Valk of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., Sandra Valk Hinkley of Big Indian, N.Y.; and stepsons, Keith Valk of Oneonta, N.Y., and Kevin Valk of New Kingston, N.Y.; five grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

A memorial service is planned for a later date.

Kotrady-Hudgins-Croyle Funeral Home, St. Augustine, Fla., is in charge of arrangements.

Rose Edwards

On Dec. 15, 2002, Rose Edwards of Cooperstown passed away.

An open house celebrating her life will be held at 83 Chestnut St. in Cooperstown from noon until 5 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 19. All who knew her are most welcome.

Thomas H. Ruchar

FRANKLIN — Thomas H. Ruchar, 58, of Franklin passed away suddenly Tuesday evening, Jan. 14, 2003, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta, after being stricken.

He was born Feb. 24, 1944, in Sidney, the son of Frederick and Claudia Christina Rode Ruchar. He and his family moved to Andes at a young age where he graduated in 1962. In high school he was active in FFA and the chess club. Later, he attended the State University at Delhi where he graduated in 1964.

On Aug. 1, 1964, he married the former Sandra L. Knapp in Andes.

He was employed by the State of New York as a boiler inspector for over 32 years.

Tom was very active over the years in the Margaretville Masonic Lodge No. 389, the A.O. Pilots Association as a licensed pilot, he also held a CDL license.

Tom's interests and skills were highly diverse, they ranged from farming and auto mechanics to carpentry, cabinet making and plumbing, driving tractor trailers to flying airplanes. He also loved to spend time in the woods hunting.

Tom was a very caring and affectionate man, doing whatever he could helping others. He could often be found sharing his knowledge and skills with his children, grandchildren and friends. He lived a remarkable life and will be remembered with the great kindness and love he so freely shared with everyone he knew.

He is survived by Sandra L. Hunter, mother of his children; two daughters and sons-in-law, Carolyn and David Ruff of Andes, and Darlene and Richard Kasten of  White City, Kan.; two sons and daughter-in-law, Scott and Jennifer Ruchar of Troy, and Dustin Hunter at home; 10 grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, aunts and cousins.

He was predeceased by his brother, Robert Ruchar, in January 1993.

Calling hours will be Sunday, Jan. 19, 2003, from 4 to 7 p.m. from the Jester-Stanley Funeral Home, Main Street, Andes. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. on Monday at Andes Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Daniel McCollister, pastor of the Andes Presbyterian Church and the Cabin Hill Presbyterian Church, officiating.

The family requests that memorial contributions in Tom's memory be made to the Franklin Ambulance Squad, care of Bob Cronauer, 56 Cronauer Road, Franklin, NY 13775.

Burial will be in Andes Cemetery in the spring.

Gladys Harrison

ONEONTA — Gladys Harrison, 87, of Oneonta passed away Thursday, Jan. 16, 2003, at the home of her son, Duane C. Harrison in Windsor.

She was born March 5, 1915, in Morris, the daughter of Frank H. and Mary (Daniels) Miller.

She married Merton Harrison on July 21, 1944, in Mount Vision. He predeceased her on Feb. 7, 1990.

She was a graduate of Laurens High School and Cayuga College. Gladys taught high school in Campbell, Schenectady and Laurens. She was also a case worker for the Otsego County Department of Social Services for 15 years.

She was a member of the Mount Vision Bible Baptist Church. She was also a member of the Hartwick Historical Association.

Gladys enjoyed participating in community organizations and activities. She was also very interested in preserving the history of the Bowe Hill Community. She was an avid gardener and enjoyed growing vegetables and flowers. She was very committed to her family and will be missed by all those who knew her.

She is survived by her two sons, Duane C. Harrison and his spouse, Jeanne, of Windsor, and Lynn M. Harrison of Arlington,  Texas. Her sister, Katherine Kimmey of Mount Vision; and her brother, Herbert Miller and his spouse, Marjorie, of Mesa, Ariz., survive her; a sister-in-law, Marion Mather of Laurens; and several nieces and nephews also survive her.

Funeral and committal services will be held on Monday, Jan. 20, 2003, at 2 p.m. in the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Christopher Ellis, pastor of the Mount Vision Bible Baptist Church, officiating.

Burial will take place in the spring in Mount Vision Cemetery.

Friends may call Sunday afternoon at the Bookhout Funeral Home from 4 until 6 p.m. at which time the family will be in attendance.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Mount Vision Bible Baptist Church, P.O. Box 606, Mount Vision, NY 13810, the Hartwick Emergency Squad or to the Mount Vision Fire Department.

Arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.
