Gladys Harrison

ONEONTA — Gladys Harrison, 87, of Oneonta passed away Thursday, Jan. 16, 2003, at the home of her son Duane C. Harrison, in Windsor.

She was born March 5, 1915, in Morris, the daughter of Frank H. and Mary (Daniels) Miller.

She married Merton Harrison on July 21, 1944, in Mount Vision. He predeceased her on Feb. 7, 1990.

She was a graduate of Laurens High School and Keuka College. Gladys taught high school in Campbell, Schenectady and Laurens. She was also a case worker for the Otsego County Department of Social Services for 15 years.

She was a member of the Mount Vision Bible Baptist Church. She was also a member of the Hartwick Historical Association.

Gladys enjoyed participating in community organizations and activities. She was also very interested in preserving the history of the Bowe Hill Community. She was an avid gardener and enjoyed growing vegetables and flowers. She was very committed to her family and will be missed by all those who knew her.

She is survived by her two sons, Duane C. Harrison and his spouse, Jeanne, of Windsor, and Lynn M. Harrison of Arlington,  Texas. Her sister, Katherine Kimmey of Mount Vision; and her brother, Herbert Miller and his spouse, Marjorie, of Mesa, Ariz., survive her; a sister-in-law, Marion Mather of Laurens; and several nieces and nephews also survive her.

Funeral and committal services will be held on Monday, Jan. 20, 2003, at 2 p.m. in the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Christopher Ellis, pastor of the Mount Vision Bible Baptist Church, officiating.

Burial will take place in the spring in Mount Vision Cemetery.

Friends may call Sunday afternoon at the Bookhout Funeral Home from 4 until 6 p.m. at which time the family will be in attendance.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Mount Vision Bible Baptist Church, P.O. Box 606, Mount Vision, NY 13810, the Hartwick Emergency Squad or to the Mount Vision Fire Department.

Arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.

Helen Tolmie

COOPERSTOWN — Mrs. Helen Tolmie, 80, of Cooperstown, died Thursday evening, Jan. 16, 2003, at the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

Helen was born on Sept. 22, 1922, in Cooperstown, a daughter of Clarence E. and Nettie M. (Clark) Eggleston.

She married Smith W. Tolmie Jr. on Nov. 11, 1944, in Cooperstown. Mr. Tolmie, who taught industrial arts at Cooperstown Central School for many years, died Jan. 26, 1979.

A native of Cooperstown, Helen graduated as salutatorian from Cooperstown Central School with the Class of 1939. She then went on to attend and graduate from the Mildred Elley School in Albany. For a brief period of time she attended Cornell University, but left there to join the war effort, proudly serving her country as a WAVE in the United States Navy during World War II. Following the war, she returned to Cooperstown and began a long career with the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital as a medical secretary,

She was a member of the Sgt. Walter F. Eggleston Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 7128 in Cooperstown, which was so-named in memory of her brother, who was killed in action during World War II and in whose name a football award is given each year at the Cooperstown Central School.

Helen was also a longtime member of the First Baptist Church of Cooperstown.

Helen is survived by her two sons, Walt Tolmie and his wife, Deb DesJardins, of Charlton, Mass., and Alec Ian Tolmie of San Diego,  Calif.; three grandchildren, Kara E. Tolmie of Napa,  Calif., Christopher John Tolmie of Marlboro, Mass., and Jessica I. Tolmie of Franklin, Mass; one stepgrandson, Bryan DesJardins of Charlton, Mass.; four great-grandchildren, Elisabeth R. Boemark, Emily Diane Tolmie, Christopher Ryan Tolmie and Connor John Tolmie, and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her brother, Sgt. Walter P. Eggleston, she was predeceased by her two sisters, Mildred St. John, who died April 2, 1977, and Beatrice Skinner, who died June 11, 1993.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 25, 2003, in the Fellowship Hall at the First Baptist Church of Cooperstown, with the Rev. Douglas Deer, pastor, officiating.

Burial will take place at a later date in the Dunning Street Cemetery in Malta, N.Y.

There will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to the Cooperstown Veterans Club, 60 Main St., Cooperstown, NY 13326.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Leona J. 'Lee' Swift

AMBLERVILLE — Leona J. "Lee" (Kott) Swift of Amblerville passed away peacefully on Friday, Jan. 17, 2003, at Valley View Manor Nursing Home in Norwich.

Born April 11, 1931, in Great Meadows, N.J., she was the daughter of Joseph and Julia (Wicki) Kott. She spent her early years in Great Meadows and graduated from Hackettstown, N.J., High School. Following her schooling she worked at several jobs before her marriage.

On Sept. 12, 1953, in St. Peter and Paul's Church in Great Meadows, she married Kenneth W. Swift, who survives. Lee began raising her family and also helped in the family businesses at Stewart's Root Beer Stand in  Washington, N.J., and the Swift Brothers leather business. After moving to Amblerville in 1972, she was a certified nursing aide, caring for several local people.

She was an avid gardener and was well-known for the vegetables and pumpkins she sold at her roadside stand next to her home.

She was a member of St. Paul's Church in Norwich and of the Fortnightly Study Group, a civic group in South New Berlin.

Lee is survived by her husband, Ken, of Amblerville; and two sons and their wives, Kevin and Julie Swift of South New Berlin and Joseph and Martha Swift of Sarasota, Fla.; two daughters, Kathy Swift of Norwich and Susan Carr and her husband, Dennis, of Oneonta; nine grandchildren, Kristin and Ryan Deady, Christopher, Zachary, Matthew and Colte Swift and Josh, Chad and Chelsea Carr. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

She was predeceased by two brothers, Walter and Joseph Kott, and a sister, Mildred Cox.

Funeral services for Lee will be held on Saturday, Jan. 25, 2003, at 3 p.m. from the Wilson Funeral Home in Norwich. Friends are invited to call at the funeral home on Friday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. and on Saturday from 1 p.m. until the time of the service.

Burial will take place in the spring in Riverside Cemetery in South New Berlin.

Contributions in memory of Lee may be made to the South New Berlin Emergency Squad, South New Berlin, NY 13843.

Rosemarie Hitchcock

MEREDITH — Rosemarie A. Hitchcock, 72, passed away Friday, Jan. 17, 2003, at Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown.

She was born on Nov. 13, 1930, in Queens, the daughter of Joseph and Mary (Barna) Gartner.

She married Charles Hitchcock on April 5, 1953, in Middle Village. He predeceased her on Sept. 18, 1994.

She attended the St. James Episcopal Church in Oneonta and was involved with the Meridale Women's Club.

Rosemarie enjoyed sewing, quilting, painting and doll collecting. She also loved woodworking and refinishing wooden furniture.

She is survived by her daughter, Andriann (Hitchcock) Harris and her husband, Robert, of Sterling, Va.; her three sons, David Hitchcock and his wife, Sandra, of North Franklin, Richard Hitchcock and Shawn of Interlaken, and Douglas Hitchcock and Rita Szczesh of Meredith; her seven grandchildren, Matthew Hitchcock, Jessica Deboer, Angela Hitchcock, Shanna Hitchcock, Michael Hitchcock, Ashley Hitchcock, Nicole Hitchcock; and two great-grandchildren,  Taylor Hitchcock and Martine Hitchcock. Her brothers, Richard Gartner of Bovina, Michael Gartner of Kingston, Edmond Gartner of Kentucky, Joseph Gartner of Florida, and John Gartner of Kentucky; and many nieces and nephews. Also, her very special friends, Ginny and Alice.

A brother, Robert Gartner, of Long Island predeceased her.

Funeral services will be on Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2003, at 11 a.m. in St. James Episcopal Church, Main Street, Oneonta, with the Rev. Robert Haskell officiating.

Friends may call today at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., in Oneonta from 7 to 9 p.m., at which time the family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Dialysis Unit for Social Events, attention: Mary Sellers, 1 Associate Drive, Oneonta, NY 13820 in memory of Rosemarie Hitchcock.

Arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.

John C. Whiteman

CHERRY VALLEY — Mr. John (Jack) C. Whiteman, 83, passed away Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003, at The Meadows, Cooperstown.

He was born July 18, 1919, in Cooperstown, the son of Charles G. and Anna (Yerdon) Whiteman.

He married Marian Lucy Page on Nov. 1, 1940, in Middlefield.

Mr. Whiteman attended Cherry Valley School and was a farmer most of his life. He also worked as a caretaker at the A.P. Whitehead Estate.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Cherry Valley and the Dairyman League for many years.

Besides his wife, Marian Whiteman, of Cherry Valley, he is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Ernest C. and Karen Whiteman, Robert F. and Fern Whiteman and Allen R. and Wendy Whiteman, all of Cherry Valley; six grandchildren. Kenneth, Richard, B.J., Heather, Scott, Lindsay; five great-grandchildren, Brianna, Savannah, Richie, Melanie and Kyle; 14 nieces and nephews; several great-nieces and -nephews; and several great-great-nieces and -nephews.

He was predeceased by half-brothers, Jesse, William and Clifford Graham, half-sisters, Mary Bromford and Stella Stokes.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2003, in the First Presbyterian Church, Cherry Valley, with the Rev. Ron Fralick, pastor, officiating.

A calling hour will take place from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. service time at the church.

Cremation will take place at the Leatherstocking Crematory Inc., Cherry Valley. Burial will be in the spring in the Middlefield Cemetery, Middlefield.

Because of family illness, it is requested that there be no flowers sent; contributions in Mr. Whiteman's memory may be made to the Edmeston Emergency Squad, Edmeston, NY or the Cherry Valley Emergency Squad, Cherry Valley, NY.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Leigh A. Babcock

EXETER — Leigh A. Babcock, of Truman Road, died from a stroke on Jan. 12, 2003, in Little Falls Hospital. Previously he had been at the Folts Homes, Herkimer.

Mr. Babcock was born Feb. 28, 1917, on the family farm, "Speckle Acres," in the town of Exeter, the son of the late Warren L. and Ada Itina Curtiss Babcock. A lifelong resident and dairy farmer in the town of Exeter, he was also a member of the Schuyler Lake Kingdom Hall Congregation of Jehovah's Witness since 1942.

His favorite hobbies were gardening and bee keeping, in which many of us shared in his sweet works.

In 1943, he married Martha Pine, who preceded him in death in 1983. On April 21, 1984, he married Gertrude Naylor, who survives him to this day along with several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his brother, Gerald, in 1994, and his sister, Sylvia (Babcock) Holdridge, in 2002.

There are no calling hours. A memorial service will be held Saturday, Jan. 25, 2003, at 2 p.m. in the Schuyler Lake Kingdom Hall Congregation of Jehovah's Witness.

Memorial donations may be made to the Schuyler Lake Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses or the Schuyler Lake Fire Department.

Funeral arrangements are with J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James St., Richfield Springs.

Dorothy May Whispell

COOPERSTOWN JUNCTION — Dorothy May Whispell, 64, of Cooperstown Junction died Sunday, Jan. 19, 2003, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

She was born Jan. 22, 1938, in Roxbury, the daughter of Raymond and Vera (Morris) Hammond.

She married James Clark who predeceased her in 1982. On July 1, 1990, she married Harry L. Whispell Sr., in Cooperstown Junction. Mr. Whispell died Nov. 6, 1999.

Dorothy was a nurse's aide having worked at Fox Hospital and also at several nursing homes in the area and retired from The Meadows. She lived at home with her daughter Heidi, where she enjoyed watching the birds, doing puzzles and reading. She enjoyed traveling with her husband, Harry, and going on family outings. Dorothy loved her animals and Charlie Pride.

She is survived by three daughters and their spouses and her grandchildren, Vivian and Douglas Hendrickson Sr., and Deloris and Douglas Jr. of Cooperstown Junction, Bonnie and Edward Conrow and Joshua, Emma and Lee Conrow of New Berlin, and Heidi and Donald Elie of Maryland; one stepson and his wife and their son, Harry L. and Jackie Whispell Jr., and Harry L. Whispell III of West Oneonta; three stepdaughters, Sheila and Alex Ricci and their children of Portlandville, Cynthia Whispell of Mount Vision and Brenda Vaughn and her children of West Oneonta; also a granddaughter, Jessica Clark of West Davenport; two great-grandchildren, Sierra and Alex of Milford Center; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Richard and Vivian Hammond of Brasher Falls and Robert and Onie Hammond of San Jose,  Calif.; three special aunts, Marguerite Lane of Margaretville, Ann Slater of Saugerties and Bessie Balcom of Margaretville; as well as several sisters-in-law; brothers-in-law; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

Dorothy was predeceased by her beloved son, Dennis Clark; and a special aunt, Ruth Platt.

Funeral and committal services will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2003, at 2 p.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Beverly Butler, pastor of the New Berlin United Methodist Church, officiating. Calling hours will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday from 1 p.m. until service time.

Burial will be in the spring at the Cooperstown Junction Cemetery, Cooperstown Junction.

Anyone who wishes to make a memorial contribution may make them to the Milford Emergency Squad, Milford, NY 13808 in loving memory of Dorothy May Whispell.

Funeral arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Veda A. Walley

AFTON — Veda Arletta Walley, 82, of Afton and formerly of Franklin, passed away Sunday, Jan. 19, 2003, at Wilson Memorial Hospital in  Johnson City.

She was born Feb. 26, 1920, daughter of the late Arthur and Sarah (Short) Backus in Rock Royal.

Veda married Ford F. Walley on June 21, 1939, in Rock Royal, they celebrated their 63rd anniversary in 2002.

She was employed as an assembler for E.C.D. of Bendix in Sidney when she retired in February of 1982.

After which she worked on the Board of Elections in Franklin.

Mrs. Walley was an active member of the Royal Rockers Women Group, which had its origins with the Rock Royal Methodist Church. She served as a leader and was very active in the Sakakawea 4-H in Royal Rock.

Veda also volunteered for the American Heart Association. Mr. and Mrs. Walley were members of the United Methodist Church of Franklin.

She is survived by her husband, Ford F. Walley Sr., Afton; four sons and daughters-in-law, Francis and Barbara Walley, Franklin, Clayton and Frances Walley, Chenango Bridge, Ford and Ann Walley Jr., Deposit, and Richard and Nancy Walley, Albany; sister, Margaret Ford, Afton; nine grandchildren, Roger and Nita Walley, James Walley, Stephen Walley, Mary and Rodney Earl, Michael and Lisa Walley, Lynn Walley, Ryan Walley, Derek Walley; eight great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Veda is predeceased by grandson, Robert; seven brothers, James, Chester, Warren, Lewis, Paul, Gerald and Dwight Backus and five sisters, Ethel Whitehead, Ruth Vermilyea, Isabelle Walley, Claudia Decker and Janice Scott.

Funeral and committal services will be held Thursday, Jan. 23, 2003, at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Lyle Linder, pastor of the United Methodist Church in Franklin, officiating.

Friends may call Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2003; the family will be in attendance from 7 to 9 p.m.

Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery in Afton in the spring.

Memorial contributions may be made in Veda Walley's name to the Franklin Emergency Squad or the Afton Emergency Squad.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers, Inc., Sidney.

Edith Holman Rhodes

PEORIA, Ariz. — Edith Holman Rhodes, widow of F. Joseph (Dusty) Rhodes, died Jan. 8, 2003, at her home.

Edith, born April 12, 1904, in Negaunee, Mich., was the daughter of Caroline Staples Holman and William Henry Holman, who were both natives of Cornwall, England.

Edith was a graduate of Northern Normal School, Marquette, Mich., currently called Northern Michigan University. She taught seventh- and eighth-grade English in Wakefield, Mich., prior to her marriage.

She was active in Women's Clubs and church women's organizations, particularly in Oneonta, N.Y. There, from 1931 through 1962, the emphasis of her life and devotion were to her children and husband, who was the manager of the local JC Penney store.

Edith and Dusty moved to Santa Barbara,  Calif., after his retirement and then later on to Sun City, Ariz. After Dusty's death in 1981, Edith moved to the Glencroft Retirement Community in Glendale, Ariz. Most recently she lived in Peoria, Ariz., where she was a member of Bethany Bible Church.

She was predeceased by her sister, Lillian Holman Clippinger; and three of her four brothers, W. Earl Holman, Stanley Holman and Edward Holman.

Survivors include her daughter, Deo Rhodes Boyland, St. Helena Island, S.C.; and sons, William H. Rhodes, Lexington, Mass., and Nat H. Rhodes, Phoenix, Ariz.; brother, George Holman, Spokane, Wash.; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and 11 nieces and nephews.

Burial services will be private. A memorial service was held at Bethany Bible Church, 6060 N. 7th Ave., Phoenix, Ariz., on Jan. 11, 2003.

Rosemarie Hitchcock

MEREDITH — Rosemarie A. Hitchcock, 72, passed away Friday, Jan. 17, 2003, at Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown.
