Thomas R. Rockefeller

AFTON — Thomas Richard Rockefeller Jr., 40, of Afton, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2003, at his home.

He was born Dec. 11, 1962, son of Thomas R. and Hazel Day Rockefeller Sr. in Hancock.

Tom served his country in the United States Air Force from 1981-1992. He was currently employed by the Village of Sidney.

Tom was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was a tireless gardener who continually brought beauty to any land he walked upon.

His never-ending determination and individual drive will be greatly missed. His memory will live on and be seen in all the gardens he has touched.

He is survived by his parents, Thomas and Hazel Rockefeller, Afton; soulmate, Cheryl Starcher, Sidney; and her daughter and son-in-law, Jessica and Shawn Weeden, Sidney; brother and sister-in-law, Brian and Jennifer Rockefeller, Virginia; their children, Katie and Andrew Rockefeller, Virginia; and cousins.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Feb. 1, 2003, at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, at 1 p.m., with the Rev. David Masland, pastor of the United Methodist Church of Sidney, officiating.

Friends may call Friday; the family will be in attendance from 7 to 9 p.m.

Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery in Hancock in the spring.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Montel Williams MS Foundation, 331 West 57th St., PMB 420 New York, N.Y. 10019.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers, Inc., Sidney.

Paul David Hayner

PERU, Ill. — Paul David Hayner Jr., 81 years of age, formerly of Oneonta, N.Y., died of complications from lung cancer on Monday, Jan. 27, 2003, in Peru, Ill.

Paul David Hayner Jr. was born on Feb. 12, 1921, in Utica, N.Y., to Paul David Hayner and Elizabeth Connors Hayner. He was raised in Oneonta, N.Y., where he attended Hartwick College.

He served in the Army Air Force during World War II, stationed in England. At the war's end, he moved to Chicago, Ill., where he married Joan Elizabeth Lalor, also formerly of Oneonta, in 1950. They moved to Dimmick Township from the Chicago area in 1965.

Paul Hayner retired from Sunstrand Corporation in 1981. In retirement, he was active as a volunteer at Illinois Valley Community College, the Utica Volunteer Ambulance Service and the Peru Library. He was a member of the Waltham Grange.

He is survived by his sister, Mary Ames of Flourtown, Pa.; his son, Bruce (Peggy) Hayner, of Deerfield, Ill.; his daughter, Suzanne (Mark) Knaff, of Utica, Ill.; and his grandchildren, Laura and Audrey Hayner of Deerfield, Sean Knaff of Chicago and Anthony Knaff of Peoria, Ill.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Joan.

Memorials may be directed to the Starved Rock Foundation, P.O. Box 398, Utica, IL 61373.

Pamela Rist Hacklin

JEFFERSON — Pamela Rist Hacklin, gracious realist and purveyor of harmony, died Tuesday morning, Jan. 28, 2003, of breast cancer at her home in  Jefferson.

She was the daughter of Bud and Paula Rist, and the sister of Jim, Nancy, Wendy, Bob and Jack.

Beautiful as her own garden, she was just, dignified and nurturing. She had passion for horses, nature, art and poetry.

Throughout her gradual passing, she was blessed with that strength and wisdom for which we have always adored her.

She is survived by her husband, Allan; and her children, Ethan, Wendy, Chazzy, Mookie; and many friends.

She joins her parents and two sisters in peace.

Wauneita Lillian Lord

SIDNEY — Wauneita L. Lord, 84, a resident at the Robinson Terrace Nursing Home, Stamford, and formerly of 12 Edgewood Drive, Sidney, passed away peacefully Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2003, in Stamford.

She was born Feb. 9, 1918, in Sidney, the daughter of the late Joseph and Cora Slawson Charles.

On June 8, 1940, she married William Lord Jr., in Sidney. He predeceased her on Sept. 26, 1978.

Wauneita was a secretary and tax clerk for A.J. Axtell Accounting Office, Sidney, and later for Wanda Battin, Public Accountant.

She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Robert W. and Betty Lord, North Olmstead, Ohio, and Gary and Barbara Lord, Unadilla; daughter and son-in-law, Carol and George Alston, San Diego,  Calif.; sister, Thelma Dalrymple, Delhi.

A sister, Virginia Alger, predeceased her.

There will be no calling hours. Graveside services will be held in the spring of 2003 in the Prospect Hill Cemetery, Sidney.

Memorial gifts in her name may be directed to the Patient Care Fund at Robinson Terrace, Stamford.

Arrangements are under the direction of the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Leona M. Daniels

ONEONTA — Mrs. Leona M. Daniels, 93, passed away after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer's Disease, Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2003, at The Meadows, Cooperstown, where she had been residing since 1999.

She was born Jan. 27, 1910, in Acidalia, the daughter of Charles and Mary (Misner) Shelley.

On Jan. 1, 1939, she married Percy M. Daniels in Oneonta. He predeceased her in 1994.

Mrs. Daniels was a member of the Oneonta Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses for 48 years.

In her younger years she owned and operated a riding academy and never lost her love for horses, teaching others and riding herself.

She worked for 40 years as a telephone operator until retiring in May 1970.

She was an avid gardener — loving flowers of all kinds and planting large vegetable gardens until she was no longer able, due to her illness.

Above all, the most important part of her life was her family and her love for Bible truth. She firmly believed in the Bible's promise of a paradise earth in which sickness and death will be no more and she shared that hope with others for many years.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Carl and Joyce (Daniels) Gage; grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Shaun and Deborah Gage, and daughters, Julia and Hannah of Johnstown, Kerry and Jann Gage of Providence, Ky., Scott and Tammy Gage of Oneonta, Jeff and Kimberlee (Gage) Smyrski, and son, Jabin of Bouckville, and Shelli Gage of Oneonta.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, Feb. 9, 2003, at 2 p.m. at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in West Oneonta, with Donald Gunther, an Elder in the Oneonta Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses, officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to either Jehovah's Witnesses, 3985 State Highway 23, West Oneonta, N.Y. or the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Veronica Zupevec Grozina

ONEONTA — Veronica Zupevec Grozina, 87, of Oneonta, passed away Jan. 30, 2003, after a lengthy illness, at The Meadows.

She was born April 20, 1915, in Homer City, Pa., the daughter of Anton and Mary (Orish) Zupevec, and was one of nine children.

She married Josef Grozina on May 27, 1967, in Cherry Valley. Mr. Grozina died May 4, 1998.

Mrs. Grozina was employed at the Richmondville Glove Company for 27 years and was proud of the fact that they worked overtime during World War II making gloves for the U.S. Army servicemen.

She was a lifelong area resident and was a graduate of Hartwick High School.

She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Wayne (Connie) Davis, of Elma; two granddaughters; one grandson; and three great-grandchildren, all from the Buffalo area. She is also survived by one sister, Frances Wayman of Hartwick; and one brother, Larry Zupevec of Oneonta.

Funeral services will be held later at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Hartwick Cemetery, Hartwick.

Arrangements are by the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.

Ronald J. Olson

MOHAWK — Ronald J. Olson, age 62 of Putts Hill Road, entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2003, in Saint Luke's Memorial Hospital Center, New Hartford after a courageous battle with renal disease.

He was born on Aug. 28, 1940, in Cooperstown, son of the late Clyde B. and Clarabell Irene Weaver Olson.

A lifelong area resident, Ron was educated in Cooperstown and Richfield Springs schools. An honorably discharged U.S. Army veteran, he served from 1957 until 1959.

On Oct. 1, 1960, he married Carol Ann James in Morris.

He had worked for the Tioga Construction Company in Herkimer, retiring in 1995. Mr. Olson and his wife have resided in Mohawk since 1978.

Ron had a strong love for the outdoors and enjoyed hunting, camping and tinkering with projects. He was a member of the Ridge Runners Snow Mobile Club, the Dolgeville Rod & Gun Club, East Herkimer Fish & Game Club and the Mohawk Fish & Game Club.

He was an inspiration to his many friends, neighbors and family. "We are all proud of the legacy that he left us."

Surviving besides his wife of 42 years, Carol, are a son, William Olson and his friend, Lesa of Ilion; two daughters, Donna and her husband, David Parshall of Richfield Springs, and Sandra Olson of Utica; one sister, Shirley and her husband, Robert Wingquist; a brother, Clyde B. Olson; his grandchildren, who will miss him dearly,  Taylor and her husband, Cory Webster, Justin Price, Kyle Bridger, Katherine, Gretchen and Rachel Olson; his mother-in-law, Viola James; along with many nieces, nephews, cousins and his faithful companion, Luke.

He was preceded in death by his son, Ronald J. Olson Jr., his mother and stepfather.

The family will be present in Fenner Funeral Home Inc., 115 Court St., Herkimer, to receive relatives and friends on Monday, from 3 until 5 p.m. A memorial service will follow at 5:30 p.m., with the Rev. Alan Miller officiating.

Interment in Mohawk Cemetery will take place later this spring at a time to be announced.

The family wishes to thank the St. Luke's Renal Dialysis Unit in the Little Falls Hospital and the many nurses and doctors that cared for him.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Foundation. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Marianna Shults

ST. JOHNSVILLE — Mrs. Marianna Shults, 88, of State Highway 5S, Ft. Plain, died Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2003, at St. Johnsville Nursing Home where she had been a resident.

Born on Jan. 13, 1915, in Hallsville, she was the daughter of John and Antoinette Dievendorf Lieber.

She was a lifelong area resident and graduate of Ft. Plain High School. She went on to graduate from Albany Business College.

She was employed for over 20 years as a Bookkeeper for G.L.F., which later became Agway of Ft. Plain. until retiring in 1970.

Mrs. Shults was a member of Ft. Plain Reformed Church and served on its consistory.

She was a faithful member and past matron of the Order of the Eastern Star, Otsquago Chapter, a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, The Turtle Club, National Bell Association and former member of The Hallsville Grange.

Survivors include her husband, Leonard Shults, whom she married on June 6, 1936: two sons, Gary L. Shults and his wife, Helen of Canajoharie, and Manly F. Shults and his wife, Karen of Delhi; two daughters, Sondra Failing of Ft. Plain, and Gayle S. Smith and her husband, Jack of Cooperstown; two sisters, Janet O'Brian of Crawfordville, Fla., and Doris Stiles of Amsterdam; 17 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death in 1937 by an infant son, Leonard John Shults and an infant daughter, Annette Marie Shults in 1954. She was also predeceased in 2001 by a sister, Margaret Thompson.

Calling hours are Saturday, Feb. 1, 2003, from 3 until 6 p.m. at the Lenz & Betz Funeral Home, 69 Otsego St., Canajoharie, where The Order of the Eastern Star will meet at 5:45 p.m.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, Feb. 2, at 12:30 p.m. at the Ft. Plain Reformed Church, Canal Street, with the Rev. Nancy Ryan officiating.

Burial will take place in Ft. Plain Cemetery in the spring.

Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to Ft. Plain Reformed Church or Mid-County Volunteer Ambulance Service.
