H. Joseph Pendergast

SCHOHARIE — H. Joseph Pendergast, 91, longtime resident of Schoharie County and Lakeland, Fla., died Wednesday, July 9, 2003, at his home in Schoharie.

Born on March 19, 1912, in Syracuse, Joseph was the son of Henry James Pendergast and Alice Sheehan of Phoenix. He was raised on the Oswego River Stock Farm in Phoenix, where his love for livestock, especially pure bred cattle, and all breeds of horses began.

Joseph graduated from the Phoenix School system and in 1938 he graduated from Cornell University with a bachelor of science degree in animal sciences. While at Cornell, he was a member of the national award-winning Livestock Judging Team. He was very active in Alumni affairs for the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and served as Development Chairman and President of the Alumni Association. He was recognized as an Outstanding Alumni in 1986.

Joseph went on to a long and distinguished career in the agriculture industry, beginning as a Cooperative Extension agent in Chatauqua County, and then in Lewis County. He moved to become the Cooperative Extension agent for Schoharie County in the 1940s. In 1950, he became a field representative for the American Guernsey Cattle Club. In the early 1960s, Joseph became Executive Director of the New York State Guernsey Breeders Association, retiring in 1974. Several years later, he came out of retirement to develop a livestock exchange program for the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets.

Besides judging livestock and draft horses, which he did on a national level, Joseph's greatest interests were in agricultural fairs. He served many years on the Board of Directors for the Cobleskill Sunshine Fair, including a term as president. He was also a member of the Board of Directors of the New York State Association of County Fairs, where he served in all executive positions. Joseph had the honor of being appointed by New York Governors Rockefeller, Carey and Cuomo as a member of the New York State Fair Advisory Board.

He was a communicant at St. Vincent De Paul's Catholic Church in Cobleskill, and at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Lakeland, Fla. He was a member of the Cobleskill Elks Club, the Cobleskill Golf and Country Club, the Cobleskill Exchange Club and the New York State Agricultural Society and several other professional agricultural associations.

He was predeceased by his wife, Doris Schoff Pendergast, and his brother, William Pendergast of Middletown.

He is survived by his sister, Ann Sanford of Alexandria, Va.; son, David, and his wife, Susan of Middleburgh, son, Dennis, and his wife, Iris of Bakersfield, Calif.; and grandchildren, Sarah Bramer and her husband, Joel of Schoharie, Kathleen and Joanne Pendergast of Middleburgh, Jack and Matthew Pendergast of Bakersfield. Calif., and Jacob and Rory Hervey, also of Bakersfield, Calif.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, July 12, 2003, at 10 a.m. at St. Vincent De Paul's Catholic Church, 138 Washington Heights in Cobleskill.

A private family burial will be held at the Pendergast Family Cemetery in Phoenix, at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the H. Joseph Pendergast Dairy Science Fund, care of Allen Bell, Department of Animal Science, 149 Morrison Hall, Cornell University, Ithaca, NY 14853.

Arrangements are entrusted to Palmer & Shaylor Funeral Home, Middleburgh and Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, Cobleskill.

Muriel Bree

DANBURY, Conn. — Muriel Bree, 95, died on July 9, 2003, at Hancock Hall, Danbury, Conn.

She was born on June 12, 1908, in Equinunk, Pa., to Charles and Edna Mitchell Phillips.

She was a lifelong resident of New York State until 1999, when she moved to Bethel, Conn., to live with son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Jo-Ann Down.

She is survived by Charles and Jo-Ann Down of Asheville, N.C.; her sister, Charlotte Hay of Oneonta, N.Y.; granddaughter, Susan Calder of Las Vegas, Nev.; grandson, Steven Down of Charlotte, N.C.; stepgrandson, William Grossi of Tollesin, Ariz.; and one niece and three nephews.

She was predeceased by two sisters, Marion Hendee of Sidney, N.Y., and Florence Scoville of Chapel Hill, N.C.

Memorial contributions may be made to Recreation Department, Hancock Hall, 31 Staples St., Danbury, CT 06810.

Burial arrangements will be completed at the direction of the family.

Leighton G. Jump

HUDSON — Leighton G. Jump, 82, died Thursday at Firemans Home, Hudson.

He was born on April 20, 1921, in Roxbury. He was the son of the late Glenn and Blanche (Stahl) Jump.

He is survived by a brother, Wallace Jump of Purdy, Mo.

He was well loved and will be missed by many dear friends.

A laborer by trade. Mr. Jump was a member of Hensonville Hose Company for over 30 years.

Friends may call Saturday, July 12, 2003, from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Decker Funeral Home, 134 Main St., Windham.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 12, 2003, at 11 a.m. at the funeral home, with the service conducted by Michael Young (Hospice Chaplain).

Interment will be in Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Ashland.

Funeral arrangements are by the Decker Funeral Home, Windham.

Emma Palmer Johnson

MORRIS — Emma Palmer Johnson, 88, of Morris died Wednesday, July 9, 2003, at the Oneonta Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.

She was born on Feb. 21, 1915, in Westville, the daughter of Frederick B. Palmer and Mabel (Ford) Palmer.

She was married to Lawrence C. Johnson on Aug. 27, 1937, at the Mount Vision Baptist Parsonage. He died Nov. 24, 1992.

Emma was a lifelong area resident, graduating from Morris Central School in 1933, being the first class to graduate from "the new school."

She later worked for 40 years for the H.W. Naylor Co. a manufacturing chemist of veterinary products sold worldwide. She retired in 1982.

Surviving are a son, Gary Johnson of Morris; a sister, Leah Evans of Mount Vision; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Larry; a daughter, Mrs. Frederick (Kay) Sherwood; a sister, Lillian Hood; a brother, LeRoy Palmer; and a sister-in-law, Laura Palmer.

Calling hours will be held on Sunday, July 13, 2003, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris.

Funeral services will also be held at the funeral home on Monday, July 14, 2003, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Ann Blair officiating. Committal services and burial will be in Hillington Cemetery, Morris.

Those who wish are asked to make donations to the Morris Emergency Squad in Emma's memory.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Hilton Shultis

HUNTINGTON STATION — Hilton Shultis of Huntington Station passed away on Tuesday, July 1, 2003.

He was born on Dec. 7, 1930, in Kelly Corners and moved to Long Island with his family when he was a young boy.

He graduated from Huntington High School and served a 4-year term in the United States Air Force.

Hilton married Eugenia Bielenin of Huntington Station on April 5, 1953. They recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a surprise party given by their daughter, Renee Becker.

He retired from Grumman Corporation where he was employed for 26 years in both the Bethpage and Calverton facilities.

Hilton's greatest joy was his grandson, Ryan, who was the apple of his eye. "Papa" and Ryan were best buddies until the very end.

Besides his wife, Eugenia, he is survived by his daughter, Renee Becker; his grandson, Ryan Becker of Bay Shore; a sister, Elsie Algeria of East Moriches; a sister, Muriel, and brother-in-law, Robert Felske of Sidney; a brother, Roger Shultis of Bainbridge; a brother-in-law, Fredric Decosterd of Coram; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Hilton was predeceased by his mother and father, Irene and Loren Shultis; a brother, Merwin Shultis; a sister, Marie Popolizio; and a sister, Patricia Decosterd.

He was laid to rest on Thursday, July 3, at St. Patrick's Cemetery in Huntington.

Helena McShane Fulvio

MONTROSE, Pa. — Helena McShane Fulvio, 89, of Montrose, Pa., died Tuesday, July 8, 2003, at the Endless Mountains Health Systems.

Born Sept. 20, 1913, in Troy, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Dr. John J. and Helen (Burke) McShane.

She obtained a B.A. degree in fine arts from Radcliffe College, Mass., and then received two master's degrees from the State University of New York.

She was a lifelong teacher in the Springfield Central School District, Springfield, N.Y., and a member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Springfield Center, N.Y.

Survivors include daughter and son-in-law, Leslie and John Reidy of Montrose, Pa.; son, Chris Fulvio of Weems, Va.; granddaughter, Erin Walker Reidy, and sister and brother-in-law, Catherine and Julian Sollohub, of Tallahassee, Fla.

She was predeceased by her brothers, John and Walter McShane, who died in combat during World War II.

Private services have been entrusted to the Bartron Funeral Home Inc., a Selected Independent Funeral Home, 74 Church St., Montrose, Pa.

Edwyn E. Mason

ZEPHYRHILLS, Fla. — Edwyn E. Mason, 90, of Zephyrhills, Fla., and formerly of Hobart, N.Y., passed away Wednesday, July 9, 2003, in Zephyrhills.

Mr. Mason was born Feb. 6, 1913, in Depeyster, N.Y., to Burton and Ena (Evans) Mason.

He moved to Zephyrhills in 1978 from Hobart, N.Y.

He was a veteran of the United States Army serving in World War II, a graduate of Albany Law School, a Protestant and former New York state senator. As senator of the 48th District, he authored many environmental bills, and he received many awards for his work as state senator.

Active in veterans affairs, he was past commander of the Stamford American Legion Post, a former justice of the peace of the town of Stamford, N.Y., member of the Historical Association of Sidney, N.Y., the National Historical Society and the American Bar Association.

He is survived by his daughter, Martha Mason of Zephyrhills and Binghamton, N.Y.; a son, Richard Mason, and his wife, Eileen, of Castleton, N.Y.; a grandson, Shawn Mason, serving in Iraq with the United States Marine Corps; a granddaughter, Heather Mason of Castleton, N.Y.; and close friends, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Spurling of Zephyrhills.

Funeral services were held 10 a.m. Friday, July 11, at Whitfield Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Charles Whetstone officiating. Interment followed at Oakside Cemetery in Zephyrhills.

The family received friends Thursday evening, July 10, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make donations to the following charities: the Humane Society of Central Delaware County, State Highway 10, Delhi, NY 13753; the Delaware County Historical Association, 46549 State Highway 10, Delhi, NY 13753; the Hobart Presbyterian Church, Hobart, NY 13788 or to any charitable organization in memory of Edwyn E. Mason.

Arrangements are by Whitfield Funeral Home of Zephyrhills, Fla.

Nettie Boggs Moore

BURLINGTON — Mrs. Nettie Boggs Moore, 85, of Burlington, N.C., died at 8:45 a.m. Saturday, July 5, 2003, at Liberty Commons Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, after eight years of declining health.

A native of Meredith, N.Y., she was the wife of the late Marshall R. Moore and the daughter of the late Hillard Boggs and Elizabeth Rutherford.

She was a legal secretary and a member of St. Marks Reformed Church in Burlington.

Survivors include two sons, James Moore and wife Evonne of Amery, Wis., and Michael Moore and wife Helen of Burlington; two brothers, Wendell Boggs of Herkimer, N.Y., and Renwick Boggs of Oneonta, N.Y.; two sisters, Margaret Boggs Craig of Oneonta and Evelyn Boggs Dickson of Delhi, N.Y.; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Besides her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by one grandchild.

A memorial service was conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, July 7, at the Rich and Thompson Chapel in Graham by the Rev. Ben Bishop.

Interment will take place at the Englewood United Methodist Church Cemetery in Englewood, Fla., at a later date.

The family received friends after the memorial service on Monday at Rich and Thompson Funeral Home in Graham and at other times at the son's home, Michael Moore, 3027 Maple Ave., Unit Q1, Burlington.

H. Bruce Riley

NEW BERLIN — H. Bruce Riley, 72, died Friday, July 11, 2003, at his home in New Berlin.

He was born Aug. 15, 1930, in Auburn, to Howard and Elsie (Barnett) Riley.

A graduate of Weedsport Central School, he was retired from General Telephone Corp. of Bradenton, Fla., before moving back to New York state.

He served in the United States Navy during the Korean War from 1950-54. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of New Berlin and member of Phoebus Lodge No. 82 of New Berlin.

Bruce was happiest when he was with his family and gardening in his yard.

He is survived by his wife, Carol, whom he married on Dec. 31, 1975; his son, Bruce Joseph "BJ" Riley of New Milford, Pa.; three stepchildren, Michael, Karen and Julie; one brother, Paul Riley of Eclectic, Ala., and three nieces, Marta, Elizabeth and Ramelle.

A memorial service will be held Monday, July 14, at 2 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church, New Berlin, with the Rev. Beverly Butler of the First United Methodist Church, New Berlin, and the Rev. Charles Taylor of St. Andrews Episcopal Church, New Berlin.

There were no calling hours.

Jackson Y. Allen

DeLANCEY — Jackson Y. Allen, 83, of DeLancey, died Friday, July 11, 2003, at his home.

He was born June 16, 1920, in Delhi, the son of Edgar P. and Elizabeth (Young) Allen.

He married Ardath Fletcher Jan. 24, 1948, in Shavertown. She predeceased him in 2002.

He is survived by his daughter, Pamela Allen Mason, DeLancey; two sons, Dennis Allen, Fairfax, Va., and Barry Allen and his wife, Linda, Alexandria, Va.; one grandson, Zachary Van Nostrand, Delhi; a brother, William Allen, Sorrento, Fla.; a sister-in-law, Anita Gerould, Walton; a special "son" Paul Harris, Corning; and several nieces and nephews.

Jack lived in the Delhi area all his life, was a farmer and stonemason, as well as being a longtime employee of McDowell and Walker prior to retirement.

He served in the Navy during World War II, with tours in the Pacific and aboard the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Midway.

Jack (or "Pop" as he was affectionately known) loved his family and his pets. Among his many interests were gardening and bowling, each of which he enjoyed for many years. He also loved baseball and was a staunch Atlanta Braves fan.

A wake celebrating his life will be held on Monday, July 14, 2003, at the Hamden Inn, Route 10, Hamden, from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to the Peace Plantation, 12752 State Highway 206, Walton, NY 13856, or the Delhi Emergency Squad, Delhi, NY 13753.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

Julie Gloster

HAMDEN — Julie Gloster, 44, of Hamden, died Saturday, July 12, 2003, at O'Connor Hospital, Delhi.

She was born Aug. 2, 1958, in Delhi, the daughter of John R. and Judith Delameter Townsend.

Ms. Gloster was employed as a nurse at O'Connor Hospital, Delhi, for 14 years.

She was a loving mother, grandmother, daughter and sister, who enjoyed cooking, sewing, gardening and most especially her grandchildren.

Her parents, Judith and William Carr, and John and Eileen Townsend; four children, Jaclyn Anne Pernice and her husband, Richard, Jon-Michael Gloster, Jennifer-Lynne Gloster and James Andrew Gloster; and her brothers and sisters, Joni-Beth and Rennie Walling, Jon-Andrew and Karen Townsend, Jo-Ellen Reeder, Joel David Townsend and Jennifer and Kevin Soules, all survive, as do her grandchildren, Mikayla Rose Pernice, Alexis Marie Pernice and Jon-Michael Gloster II; and many nieces and nephews.

A brother, James Abram Townsend; and her grandmother, Isabel Delameter, predeceased her.

Funeral services will take place on Wednesday, July 16, 2003, at 11 a.m. at the DeLancey Presbyterian Church, DeLancey, with the Rev. Bert More officiating. Burial will follow at the Hamden Cemetery, Hamden.

Calling hours will be held at the MacArthur Funeral Home, 131 Main St., Delhi, on Tuesday, July 15, 2003, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

Contributions in her memory may be made to O'Connor Hospital Fund, Delhi, N.Y.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

Beatrice Licata

BAINBRIDGE — Beatrice Licata, 72, of 114 Chesapeake Road, Bainbridge, passed away unexpectedly Friday morning, July 11, 2003, at her residence.

She was born Nov. 21, 1930, in Brooklyn, the daughter of the late Francis and Clarice Lewis Matonis.

On Aug. 10, 1950, she married Richard F. Licata in Brooklyn. He predeceased her on May 19, 1993.

She is survived by two daughters, Linda Marcovecchio of Medford, and Betty Anne Licata of Bainbridge; and brother, Francis Matonis Jr., of Sidney.

A brother, Edwin Matonis, predeceased Beatrice.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 15, 2003, from the Prospect Hill Cemetery in Sidney, with the Rev. James Cox, of the Sacred Heart Church, Sidney, officiating.

Arrangements are under the direction of the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.
