’Nick’ Franklin Nickerson

PRATTSVILLE — "Nick" Franklin Nickerson, 81, of Prattsville died at his home Thursday, July 14, 2005.

He was born May 6, 1924, the son of Floyd and Grace Nickerson. Nick lived in the area all his life and in Prattsville since 1949. He attended Gilboa Central School, and managed to work mornings before school and evenings after sports. He especially enjoyed basketball.

Nick left school to join the Army during WWII. He fought in North Africa, Italy and the European Theater. After the war, Nick married Bernice Hill, until she passed away in 1996.

Nick drove a truck for Moore’s Trucking and Carmen Trucking until he bought his own trucks and became an owner-operator. He owned a fleet of trucks hauling for Greendell Packing. He later drove for Trans American Freight Lines, where he frequently drove to Kansas City, Dallas and Fort Worth, as well as numerous other stops in other cities.

Nick enjoyed hunting, fishing and playing cards. He had a love for his pets and working on anything that had an engine that he could repair or tinker with. He was always ready and willing to give someone a helping hand.

He is survived by a son Lonnie Nickerson; a daughter Linda Cross and Edwin Brainerd Jr. of Ashland; five grandchildren, Michelle Caiazza of Stamford, Tracy Fraleigh of Summit, Mary-Jo Nickerson of Albany, Michael Cross of Grand Gorge and Rosanne Cross of Prattsville; eight great-grandchildren; and four surviving sisters, Evelyn Brainerd of Prattsville, Helena Wiley of Victor, Golda Jones of Leeds and Frances Hull of Highland. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his brother, Floyd (Junior) Nickerson and a sister, Audrey Raeder.

Viewing will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, July 19, at the Decker Funeral Home, Main Street, Windham.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 20, at the Methodist Church in Prattsville.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Stamford.

Irene Muhi Sziwack

CLAYTON, Ga. — Mrs. Irene Muhi Sziwack, 84, of Clayton, Ga., died Sunday, July 10, 2005, in Clayton.

Born in Hungary on June 13,1921, Irene was married to Joseph M. Sziwack, who passed away in 1977.

Irene is survived by two sisters-in-law, Frances M. Busch of Franklin, N.C., and Anna Morenus of Sidney Center.

A graveside Service of Committal and Burial will be offered at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 20, 2005, in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Index, with Fr. John P. Rosson, pastor of St. Mary’s "Our Lady of the Lake" Catholic Church in Cooperstown, presiding.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Pauline B. Short

BINGHAMTON — Pauline B. Short, 91, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, July 16, 2005, at Willow Point Nursing Home.

She was predeceased by her husband, Orman D. Short, two sons, Larry Short and Paul Short, sisters, Viola Skillin, June Sprague and Dorothy Stoughton, a brother, Dana W. Banks, and two daughters-in-law, Frances Short and Roberta Short.

She is survived by three sons and two daughters-in-law, Charles D. and Alma Short, Binghamton, Nelson L. Short and Nancy Chickerell, Oneonta, and Frederick B. and Betty Short, Brackney, Pa.; nine grandchildren, David and Kathy Short, Darlene and Kevin Martin, Donna and Geoff Bondi, Steven and LaVawn Short, Cindy and Rich Weber, Wendy and Ryan Delaney, Karen and Steven Hill, Tammy Short, Linda and William Ambrose; 18 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Marie Roe, Scotch Plains, N.J.; several nieces, nephews and cousins, including those in Nova Scotia.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Wm. R. Chase & Son Funeral Home, 737 Chenango St., Port Dickinson, with the Rev. Glenn Seaver, pastor of the Bethel Baptist Church and chaplain at Willow Point Nursing Home. Burial will be in Oneonta Plains Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 6 to 9 p.m. today.

Lee Patrick Glavin

CAROL STREAM, Ill. — Lee Patrick Glavin, 67, of Carol Stream, Ill., passed away Friday, July 15, 2005, at Margaretville Memorial Hospital.

Lee was born in Mount Clements, Mo., on June 18, 1938, the son of John Frances and Elenore Montroy Glavin.

He grew up and graduated from school in Kansas City. He spent five years in the Coast Guard and three years in the Merchant Marine.

He moved to the Oneonta area in 1963. Lee ran and owned a service station on the corner of Main and River streets in Oneonta for two years.

He married Clara S. Yorks on April 7, 1979.

He was a past Cub Scout master in Laurens and a past member of the Laurens Legion and the Moose Club in Sidney.

Lee was employed by the Allied Bendix plant in Sidney for 28 years. He was the manager of the Genesee softball team.

He attended the Milford Baptist Church in Milford and the First Baptist Church, Main Street in Wheaton, Ill. He moved to Wheaton, Ill., in 1994 and was employed at United Recycling Industries Inc. as plant manager until his death.

Lee was an avid NASCAR fan for many years.

Lee is survived by his brothers, Dennis Glavin of Florida, Robert Glavin of Illinois and Thomas Glavin of Maine; his stepchildren, Carolyn Yorks Rose of Oneonta, William Yorks Jr. of Troutman, N.C., and Jackie Yorks Brewer of Margaretville; his children, Misty Armenti of Rockaway, N.J., and Shawn Glavin of Oneonta; stepdaughter, Shona Lee Glavin of Oneonta; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his father and mother, John Frances and Elenore Montroy Glavin; his sister, Jacqueline Zumstag; his brothers, Mel Furton, John Glavin and Harry Glavin.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Margaretville Memorial Hospital, 42084 State Highway 28, Margaretville, NY 12455 or Catskill Area Hospice in Lee’s memory.

A graveside service will be at 5 p.m. Thursday, July 21, 2005, in the Cook Cemetery in West Oneonta, with the Rev. John Dougherty officiating.

Additional memorial services will take place at a later date at the First Baptist Church, Main Street in Wheaton, Ill.

Gerald E. Broe

ONEONTA — Gerald E. Broe, 84, of Oneonta passed away Saturday, July 16, 2005, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital.

Gerald was born Sept. 16, 1920, in East Orange, N.J., the son of Christopher and Rose (Mangan) Broe.

He married Ruth M. Barber on Oct. 2, 1943.

Gerald served his country in the United States Army, 188th Parachute Infantry, during World War II, achieving the rank of technician fifth grade. He was given the American Service Medal, Asiatic Pacific Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.

He was the owner/operator of Superior Taxi in Oneonta.

Gerald was a devout Catholic and communicant at St. Mary’s Church, attending Mass daily.

He enjoyed reading and, when his sight went, being read to by his wife, Ruth. He loved to walk. Every morning he walked to get coffee and go to church. When he could no longer walk, he road his stationary bike. He was devoted to his family and loved the time he spent with them, especially at the farm, swimming and telling jokes.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth M. Broe, of Oneonta; his five children, Steven Broe of Oneonta, Paul Broe of Germantown, Md., Mary Beth Broe and her husband, Randall Bloom, of Littleton, Colo., Kathleen B. and her husband, John Anastos, of Mansfield, Mass., and Gregory and his wife, Nancy, of Marietta, Ga.; his two brothers and two sisters, Thomas Broe of Riverdale, Ga., James Broe of Colliersville, Mary Otvos of Colliersville and Elizabeth Priore of Michigan; 11 grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his brother, Joseph Broe and his sister, Gertrude Natoli.

Friends may call at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta, from 6 to 8 p.m. today, at which time the family will be in attendance.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 19, 2005, in St. Mary’s Church, Oneonta, with the Rev. Steven Moore, associate pastor, officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Emmons.

Memorial contributions, in lieu of flowers, may be made to St. Mary’s Church, 39 Walnut Street, Oneonta, NY 13820.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Andrew M. Evans

CHERRY VALLEY — Mr. Andrew M. Evans, 21, passed away unexpectedly Saturday, July 16, 2005.

He was born May 18, 1984, in Cooperstown, the son of George "Andy" Evans Jr. and Norma Wood.

He enjoyed skateboarding, basketball, cars and computers.

Survivors include his parents; four brothers, George M. Evans, Jeffery Scott Evans, Corey A. Campbell and Devon A. Wood; four sisters, Janessa Star Evans, Nicole Lee Evans, Heather G. Campbell and Trisha M. Campbell; grandmothers, Rosemary Evans and Katherine Wood; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was predeceased by his grandfathers, George Evans Sr. and Milton Wood, and a great-aunt, Caslyn Savage.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 21, 2005, at the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley, with the Rev. Lyman Johnson officiating.

Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 20, 2005, at the funeral home.

Contributions in Andrew’s memory are asked to be sent to Rosemary Evans, PO Box 191, Cherry Valley, NY 11320.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Louis B. Webster

GILBERTSVILLE — Louis Bennett Webster, 83, passed away Sunday, July 17, 2005, after a short stay at the New York State Veterans Home in Oxford.

Born in Chateaugay on June 9, 1922, the son of Dr. Louis C. Webster and Edna (Gilmore) Webster, he spent his youth in Canandaigua, graduating from Canandaigua Academy in 1940. Mr. Webster graduated from Cornell University in 1943 with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and was employed by Hooker Chemical Company in Niagara Falls for six months before entering the Armed Services as an ensign in the Naval Reserve in May 1944.

After two months of intensive training at Plattsburgh, he was assigned to USS LCI (G) 348, which was then in active combat at Saipan off the Mariana Islands. While aboard this ship he saw action at Saipan, Tinian, Guam, Iwo Jima, Okinawa and the Philippine Islands. His battle group was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation for its part in the occupation of Iwo Jima. Other medals included the Asiatic-Pacific Medal with two Battle Stars and the American Campaign Medal.

Shortly after returning to this country, he married Marion Frances Frone of Gilbertsville on Feb. 9, 1946.

After his honorable discharge from the Navy in August 1946, Mr. Webster was employed by the Solvay Process Division of Allied Chemical and Dye Corporation (now Honeywell) in Solvay as a research chemist.

He retired in 1979 after 32 years of service in a number of operating and administrative positions. While employed by Allied, he and his family resided in the township of Cato. After retirement, the family relocated to the Frone homestead, The Locusts, near Gilbertsville. After his wife’s death in 1998, he moved into the village.

Mr. Webster was a member and past master of Butternuts Lodge No. 515, F.&A.M., a member and past commander of Gilbertsville Post No. 1339, the American Legion and active in Christ Episcopal Church, Gilbertsville.

He is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Lt. Col. and Mrs. Donald W. (Marjorie) Butterworth of Gilbertsville, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas C. (Ann) Wetzel of Grand Manan Island, New Brunswick, Canada, and Mr. and Mrs. Joseph A. (Patricia) Lukasiewicz of Orchard Park; eight grandchildren, Andrew, Emily, Sarah and Kathryn Butterworth, Wendy (Wetzel) Buchanan and husband Shayne, Timothy Wetzel and wife Beth, and Peter and Elise Lukasiewicz; two great-grandchildren, Allyson and Isaac Buchanan; one sister, Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Buell of Chesapeake, Va.; a brother-in-law, William W. Frone of Gilbertsville; and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 6, 2005, at the Christ Episcopal Church, Gilbertsville.

Donations to the Gilbertsville Emergency Squad or Gilbertsville Post No. 1339, The American Legion are requested in lieu of flowers.

Eileen M. Hamilton

MERIDALE — Eileen M. Hamilton, 97, an accomplished artist and longtime, well-known Meridale (East Meredith RD) resident, died peacefully Sunday afternoon, July 17, 2005, in the comfort of her home after a brief illness.

She was born Feb. 8, 1908, in Vancouver, British Columbia, the daughter of John D. and Augusta Ann (Dixon) Gamble, and lived with her family in Vancouver, B.C., Niagara Falls, Ontario, New York City, Santa Monica, Calif., and eventually Forest Hills, where she met and later married J. Kenneth Hamilton on Aug. 18, 1934.

The Hamiltons resided in Plainfield, N.J., for a number of years before retiring to East Meredith in 1968, the area of Kenneth’s childhood. He died Nov. 18, 1986.

Throughout her life, Eileen produced various paintings, cards and crafts, having been educated and employed in commercial art as a young woman.

She was a member of the Meridale Church where she played the organ in previous years; was a charter member of the Meredith Senior Citizens; actively served on the Town of Meredith Bi-Centennial Committee, designing the current Meredith Town logo; was an avid gardener and duplicate and contract bridge player, and also enjoyed playing the piano until the time of her death.

A lady with a broad smile and engaging personality, Eileen was an interesting conversationalist, most often maintaining a positive and "upbeat" demeanor.

Surviving are her daughter, Patricia Hamilton of Colts Neck, N.J.; a son and daughter-in-law, John W. and Mary Hamilton of East Meredith; five grandchildren, Joan Richards of Westmoreland, Pamela Yakymyshyn of Seminole, Fla., Roger Hamilton of East Meredith, Jennifer Buchenbacher of Blanco, Texas, and Sheilah Burnham of East Meredith; 11 great-grandchildren; and a niece, Valerie Hoffman of Albany.

She was predeceased by a younger sister, Sheilah Doty, and a niece, Pegi Ann Klages.

Friends are invited to call at their convenience Wednesday, July 20, at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi, where funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday. Deborah Fleming, CLP, will officiate, and burial will follow in the Glenwood Cemetery, Oneonta.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Meridale Fire Department Building Fund, PO Box 104, Meridale, NY 13806.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet, Delhi.
