John J. Lukaszewicz

Batavia - Mr. John J. Lukaszewicz, 94, a retired pharmacist for the VA Medical Center died Friday, October 7, 2011 at New York State Veteran's Home.

Mr. Lukaszewicz was born October 22, 1916 in Buffalo, the son of the late Francis and Rose Labinski Lukaszewicz.

He was a member of Resurrection Parish for many years. He and his wife enjoyed traveling having been to Europe. A veteran of World War II he served with the US Army.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years Sarah C. Orlando Lukaszewicz. Also surviving is his daughter, Susan Lukaszewicz of Batavia, nieces and nephews including James Rybarczyk of Kenmore.

Friends may call on Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. at the H.E. Turner & Co. Funeral Home, 403 E. Main St. Batavia, NY. His Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday 10:00am at Resurrection Parish - St. Joseph's Church, 300 E. Main St., Batavia. Memorials may be made to NYS Veteran's Home Resident's Fund, 220 Richmond Ave. Batavia, NY 14020. Entombment will be in St. Joseph's Mausoleum.

Paul H. Mansfield

Oakfield - Mr. Paul H. Mansfield, 91, of Oakfield, died Tuesday, (August 30, 2011) at Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital, in Buffalo.

Mr. Mansfield was born December 9, 1919 in Ashville, PA, a son of the late Henry and Eleanor (Smith) Mansfield.

Paul was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corp when he was 17 and served honorably in the United States Army for nine years with the 517th Parachute Infantry; achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant. He served in several campaigns, including the Battle of the Bulge, Rome-Arns, Southern France, Rhineland and Central Europe. In 1941, Paul served as a guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery. He was a longstanding member of the American Legion Post #262 in Basom and a founding member of the VFW Post #4315 in Ashville, PA.

He worked for the U.S. Gypsum Co. in Oakfield for 8 years as well as the IBEW Local 1249 out of Syracuse for 22 years as a welder and mechanic. He loved tinkering in his garage, golfing, and spending time with his family. Paul was also a long time member of St. Padre Pio Parish – St. Cecelia’s Site, Oakfield.

Paul is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Helen (Moran) Mansfield; daughter, Paulette (David) Brown of Batavia; two grandchildren, Samuel and Natalie, who meant the world to him. Several nieces and nephews as well as his favorite and only godchild, Ronald Becker also survive.

Mr. Mansfield is preceded in death by his son, Kenneth, who passed away March 25, 2001; sister, Betty; and brothers, Don, Jack, and Jim.

Friends may call on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Burdett & Sanford Funeral Home, 11 Maple Avenue, Oakfield. Paul’s Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday at 10:00 a.m. at St. Padre Pio Parish - St. Cecilia's Site, 56 Maple Avenue, Oakfield. Memorials may be made to St. Padre Pio Parish, or the American Legion Post #626, 6554 Alleghany Rd., Basom, NY, 14013. Burial, with full military honors will be in St. Cecilia's Cemetery, Oakfield. Flowers are gratefully declined.

James N. Nobles, Jr.

Batavia - James N. Nobles, Jr., 79, of Batavia, died Tuesday, (September 13, 2011) at United Memorial Medical Center, Batavia.

Mr. Nobles was born April 1, 1932 in Morehead City, NC, the son of the late James N. and Lula (Lewis) Nobles, Sr.

He was very proud to have served his country honorably with the Air Force during the Korean War, and thereafter with the US National Guard. He moved to Batavia four years ago from Morehead City, NC, where he was a commercial fisherman for 20 years. James was an avid reader, and had a great love for wildlife and nature, especially geese and ducks. He also enjoyed gardening and spending time with his family. Mr. Nobles was a member of the American Legion Glenn S. Loomis Post 332 in Batavia as well as a past member of the VFW in Morehead City.

Surviving along with his wife, Rosemary L. (Hough) Nobles whom he married Feb. 14, 1969 are two sons, Jim and Patrick Nobles both of TN; a daughter, Lorraine Nobles of TX; three brothers-in-law, Henry (Nancy) Hough of Batavia, Douglas (Lorraine) Hough of East Bethany, Paul (Dawn) Hough of Elba; and two sisters-in-law, Stella (late Blain) Howe and Donna Hough, both of Batavia. Several grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins also survive.

He is preceded in death by a daughter, Leann Nobles.

Friends may call on Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. at H.E. Turner & Co. Funeral Home, 403 East Main Street, Batavia, where James’ funeral service will immediately follow calling hours at 7. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Batavia Assembly of God, 24 North Spruce Street, Batavia, NY 14020. Burial will be private.

MARY R. PAHUTA

ELBA – Mrs. Mary R. Pahuta, 95, of Elba, passed away suddenly on Tuesday (September 6, 2011) at her home.

Mary was born April 19, 1916 in Bowmansville, a daughter of the late John and Rose (Prgslak) Gontko.

She was a member of St. Padre Pio Parish – Our Lady of Fatima Church Site, in Elba and enjoyed cooking, gardening and working with her flowers. She will be remembered for her petunias. She had a love for dogs and horses, having owned a standard bred horse farm. She helped to operate the family restaurant and grocery store along side her husband for many years. She also loved to spend time with her family.

She was the wife of the late Walter Pahuta, Sr., who passed away on October 28, 1987.

Mrs. Pahuta is survived by her children, Georgia (Frank) Warriner of Elba, Paula (Harvey) Griffin of East Pembroke, and Walter Pahuta, Jr., of Elba; grandchildren, Frank (Tina) Warriner of Byron, Mary Warriner of Niagara Falls, Tammy Griffin of East Pembroke, Aaron and Amanda Pahuta of Warsaw; great-grandchildren, Cassie Williams of East Pembroke, Frank and Michael Warriner of Byron; a sister, Anna (late Frank) Lacusky of Batavia, a sister-in-law, Helen Gontko of Lackawanna. Several nieces, nephews, and cousins also survive.

She is preceded in death by a daughter, Maryann Pahuta,; sisters, Frances (late Ben) Olsen, Rose (late John) Pahuta; brothers, Albert (late Olivia) Gontko, and Frank Gontko.

Friends may visit on Thursday from 4-7 p.m. at the Bohm-Calarco-Smith Funeral Home, 308 East Main St., Batavia. Prayers will be recited at the funeral home on Friday morning at 9:15 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. at St. Padre Pio Parish – Our Lady of Fatima Church Site, 65 South Main St., Elba. Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice. Burial will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Batavia.

Kathryn M. Ralf

Mrs. Kathryn M. Ralf, 95, formerly of Grand Island, died Tuesday, August 30, 2011 at the Autumn View Health Care Facility, in Hamburg.

Mrs. Ralf was born July 3, 1916 in Batavia, NY, the daughter of the late Albert and Josephine Felton Masse.

While in Grand Island she was a member of St. Stephens Church.

Her husband, the late Donald W. Ralf died in 2007.

Nieces and nephews survive.

Services will be at 10:30 am, Thursday, September 8, 2011 at the H. E. Turner & Co. Funeral Home, 403 East Main Street, Batavia, NY (585) 343-8868. Memorials may be made to Autumn View Health Care Facility Activities Fund, 4650 Southwestern Blvd., Hamburg, NY 14075. Burial will be in Acacia Park Cemetery, North Tonawanda.

Merton A."Mert" Reynolds

Bergen - Merton A. "Mert" Reynolds, 95, a 91 year resident of Bergen, died Saturday, September 3, 2011 at Highland Health System, in Rochester.

Mr. Reynolds was born April 24, 1916 in Riga, NY, a son of the late George and Mabel (Johnson) Reynolds.

He worked as a truck driver and courier at Curtis Burns in Bergen until he reached the age of 90.

He was a member of the Bergen United Methodist Church, Wardville Lodge #198 Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Olive Branch Masonic Lodge #39, Hesperus Chapter Order of the Eastern Star, Gillam Grant Community Center and life member of the Bergen Fire Department, having served for over 70 years and the Bergen Historical Society. He was a past director of the Senior Citizen's Action Council.

He is predeceased by his wife, Margaret (Dunn) Reynolds.

Survivors include 3 sons, Richard Reynolds of Bergen, Gary (Bernie) Reynolds of Blacksburg, VA, and James (Robyn) Reynolds of Irvine, CA; 2 daughters, Donna (Tom Fisher) Pringle of Bergen and Sharon (John) Lohman of Gates; a step-son, Dennis (Barbara) McCarthy of Cheektowaga; 9 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchild and several nieces and nephews.

He was the brother of the late Mildred Sackett, Harold Reynolds, Edna Rowe and Lois McCall.

Friends may attend services at 11 a.m. Saturday, at Bergen United Methodist Church. Memorials may be made to Bergen United Methodist Church, 27 S. Lake St., P.O. Box 216, Bergen, NY 14416 or to Bergen Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 428, Bergen, NY 14416. Arrangements were completed by H.E. Turner & Co. Funeral Home of Batavia.

Genevieve Sloper

South Byron - Mrs. Genevieve Sloper, 85, of South Byron, a former sales associate at K-Mart in Batavia, died Thursday, (September 29, 2011) at the United Memorial Medical Center.

Mrs. Sloper was born August 27, 1926 in Shelby, a daughter of the late Robert and Ruth (Johnson) Wright.

Survivors include her sister-in-law, Joyce (Richard) Sands of Bergen; her dear friend and neighbor, Florence of South Byron and nieces and nephews.

Her husband, James T. Sloper, died June 12, 2001. She is a sister of the late Gertrude Moule, Albert Wright and Robert Wright Jr.

There are no prior calling hours. Services will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday at Reed Cemetery, Route 63 in Oakfield. Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

Donna Jean Speed

Batavia - Donna Jean Speed, 85, of Batavia, died Wednesday, (October 5, 2011) at the Genesee County Nursing Home, in Batavia following a lengthy illness.

Mrs. Speed was born November 27, 1925 in Dundee, NY, a daughter of the late Clark W. and Dorothy (Taylor) Caward.

Donna attended SUNY Morrisville, after which, she worked at Eastman Kodak and later helped her husband with the family plumbing business. After retiring in 1986, she and her husband, Jack I. Speed, moved to Dundee, FL, where she was an active member and Past President of the Dell Lake Village Association. Following Mr. Speed’s death on August 23, 2001 after nearly 50 years of marriage, she moved back to Western New York.

She was active in the South Byron Fire Department and was head of the Ladies Auxiliary for many years. Mrs. Speed enjoyed cooking, tending to her flower gardens, fishing, boating, and volunteering her time to others, most notably as a driver for those needing cancer treatments. She was also a Cub Scout Den Mother and a member of the Byron Card Club.

Surviving are two sons, Lawrence (Barb “Bobbie”) Speed, and Terry (Dawn) Speed both of Byron; two grandsons, Dakota and Taylor Speed; a sister, Helen (late William) Pask of FL; and a sister-in-law, Bernice Caward of Seneca Falls. Several nieces, nephews, and cousins also survive.

Donna is preceded in death by her brothers Richard and Walt Caward; brother-in-law, Denny Speed; and sister-in-law, Dorothy (late Gene) Woeller.

Friends may visit on Wednesday, (October 12, 2011) from 10:00 – 12:00 noon at the H.E. Turner & Co. Funeral Home, 403 East Main Street, Batavia, where a memorial service will be held immediately following calling hours at 12:00 noon. Memorials may be made to the South Byron Volunteer Fire Department, PO Box 30, Byron, NY 14557. Burial will be in North Byron Cemetery, Byron.

Mae L. Tiede

Batavia - Mrs. Mae L. Tiede, 98, of Batavia, died Monday, (August 22, 2011) at United Memorial Medical Center.

Mrs. Tiede was born June 4, 1913 in Bergen, a daughter of the late James and Emma (Heins) Barr.

Mrs. Tiede is a former member of the Bethany Grange. She has worked at Camera Works in Rochester, Curtice Burns Canning Factory in Bergen and Chapins in Batavia.

Survivors include a sister, Elsie James of Warsaw; two brothers-in-law, Robert (Mary) Freeman of Spencerport and Arnold (Betty) Tiede of Batavia; nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Her husband of 59 years, Harold F. Tiede, died May 15, 2002. She is a sister of the late James Barr Jr., Ruth E. Lewellyn and Esther Freeman.

There are no prior calling hours. Services will be at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday at Elmwood Cemetery, Harvester Avenue in Batavia. Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
