Elmyra Jane Throckmorton
MARION -- Elmyra Jane Throckmorton, 83, Marion, passed away Thursday, Dec. 9, 2004, at her residence.
Born Aug. 3, 1921, in Marion, she was the daughter of the late Charles E. and Rebekah Samples.
On Dec. 27, 1937, in Greenup, Ky., she married Edward A. Throckmorton and he preceded her in death on Sept. 14, 1999.
A homemaker and lifetime resident of Marion, she was a member of the former Wesley United Methodist Church.
She is survived by three daughters, Melanie (Ron) Luppens of Tampa, Fla., Diane Kavanagh of Prospect and Janel M. Throckmorton of Delaware; four sons, Kent and Edward L. Throckmorton, both of LaRue, Ned A. Throckmorton of Marion and Don W. (Jane) Throckmorton of Georgia; 22 grandchildren and 38 great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two grandchildren, two sisters and three brothers.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 11, 2004, at the Boyd Funeral Home with Hospice Chaplain Daniel Kiger officiating. Burial will follow in the Marion Cemetery. Friends may call Friday 6-9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Association in care of the funeral home.
David Thurlow Cass
MOUNT GILEAD -- David Thurlow Cass, 89, of Mount Gilead, died Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2004, at his residence.
Friends may call at the Snyder Funeral Home, Mount Gilead, today, Dec. 10, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Ray Linn will hold services there on Saturday at 1 p.m. with grandsons Traber Cass and Andrew Jesson assisting. Burial will follow in Oak Grove Memorial Park, Lexington.
Helen Joan Hughes
BENKELMAN, Neb. -- Helen Joan Hughes, 62, died Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2004, at her home in Benkelman, Neb.
She was born Nov. 12, 1942, in Marion, Ohio, to the late Robert E. and Mildred M. (Arthur) Hughes.
Helen loved her family and enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. She also enjoyed reading, doing puzzles and caring for her dog, Neil.
Preceding her in death were her husband, Theodore A. Aldrich, and one brother, Robert F. Hughes.
She is survived by one son, Johnie (Tina) Colby Jr., Benkelman, Neb.; one daughter, Penny (Tom) Astalos, Aurora, Colo.; one sister, Brenda (David) Binkley, Galion, Ohio; one brother, Donald (Dorothy) Hughes, Marion, Ohio; two grandchildren, Justin and Heather Rogers; and one great-grandson, Jonathan Elling-Rogers; four nieces, five nephews and numerous other relatives and friends.
Graveside services for family and friends will be held Saturday, Dec. 11, at 10 a.m. in the chapel at Chapel Heights Memory Gardens, 2622 Marion-Upper Sandusky Road, Marion, Ohio, with the Rev. Paul Service of Dayspring Wesleyan Church officiating.
Bernadine Matherly
DIXON, Ill. -- Bernadine Matherly, age 88, of Dixon., Ill, formerly of Marion, died Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2004, at Lee County Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Dixon, Ill.
She was born in Storm Lake, Iowa, on June 21, 1916, the daughter of James L. and Gertrude (McFadden) Carrington.
She had been employed by Marion General Hospital, Marion, Ohio, for 13 years and then by Dr. Vernon Nichols M.D. for six years prior to her retirement in 1978. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Marion, Ohio, and St. Patrick Catholic Church, Dixon.
She was married to Glen Matherly on Sept. 2, 1939, in Spencer, Iowa. He preceded her in death on May 6, 2003. She was also preceded in death by four brothers, James Carrington, Jo Carrington, John Carrington and Frank Carrington; and one sister, Mary C. Bishop.
She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be Monday, Dec. 13, 2004, beginning at 12:30 p.m. Prayer service in the Jones Funeral Home, Dixon, Ill., followed by a 1 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial in St. Patrick Catholic Church, Dixon, with the Rev. Father Robert Jones officiating. Burial is in St. Patrick Cemetery, Maytown.
Visitation will be in the funeral home on Monday from 10:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. A memorial has been established.
Lloyd B. Powers
MARION -- Lloyd B. Powers, age 77, of Delaware Avenue, died at 5:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 10, 2004, at Maplewood Nursing Home.
Funeral arrangements are pending at the Denzer-Farison-Hottinger Funeral Home.
Robert A. Riedel Sr.
SYCAMORE -- Robert A. Riedel Sr., 98, formerly of 501 N. Sycamore Ave., Sycamore, died at 5 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 9, 2004, at the Wyandot County Nursing Home.
Born Dec. 5, 1906, in Wyandot County, he was the son of the late Wooster A. and Verna (Ohl) Riedel.
On Aug. 2, 1928, he married Edith U. (Wagner) Riedel; she died Sept. 11, 1990.
He was a retired painter and sheep shearer, member of Sycamore United Methodist Church, Mohawk Sixty Plus Club, Mohawk Historical Society, National Rifle Association, Sycamore Horseshoe Club, Sycamore UCC dartball team, former member of Ohio Sheep Shearer Association, past trustee of Sycamore United Methodist Church, also a former Sunday School teacher and past member of the former Board of Public Affairs of the Village of Sycamore. He loved to hunt, fish, play baseball and dartball. He was also an avid Mohawk Warrior fan.
He is survived by children, Robert and Atlee Riedel Jr., Findlay, James and Dawn Riedel, Tiffin, Alton and Elsie Riedel, Sycamore, Richard and Maria Riedel, Tiffin, Mrs. Keith (Clara) Stuckey, Bradenton, Fla., Mrs. Alton (Mary) Hill, Marion, Mrs. Claude (Phyllis) Young, Bloomville, Mrs. William (Roma) Baird, Shelbyville, Ill., Mrs. Gerald (Cathi) Clinger, Sycamore, Verlin and Sally Riedel, Sycamore; brothers and sisters, Ross Riedel, Bucyrus, Dale Riedel, Bucyrus, Mrs. Marjorie Bookmeyer, Sycamore; 30 grandchildren, 61 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two great-grandchildren, two sisters and a brother.
The funeral is 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 12, 2004, at the Walton-Moore Funeral Home, Sycamore, with Pastor Kevin Rothaar and the Rev. Kelly Brown officiating. Burial is in Pleasant View Cemetery, Sycamore. Friends may call 2-7 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Sycamore United Methodist Church, Mohawk Historical Society of Hospice of Wyandot County.
Donald R. Yant
MARION -- Donald R. Yant, 66, Marion, died at 11:10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 9, 2004, at Shelby Medical Central in Shelby.
Born Sept. 29, 1938, in Morrow County, he was the son of the late Laurel R. Yant and Pauline J. (Brake) Yant; his mother survives in Marion.
He was a U.S. Air Force veteran during peace time and police officer for 25 years for the Marion City Police Department.
He is survived by a daughter, Michelle Yant, Marion; a son, Scott Yant, Boise, Idaho; and four grandchildren.
Graveside service will be held 2:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 13, 2004, at Claridon Cemetery where military services will be provided by the Marion County United Veterans Council. Friends may call noon-2 p.m. Monday at Boyd Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Special Olympics of Marion.
