BATES Lawrence A. Bates was born in Stockton, Kan. on December 12, 1916, passed away in Columbus on Thursday, March 15, 2001 at the age of 84. Survived by wife, Frances Evelyn (Allen) Bates; sister, Gladys (Bates) White of Las Vegas, Nev.; daughter, Laree (Larry) Morgenstern of Chicago; son, Lawrence (Anita) Bates of Gahanna; 6 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren. Retired from the Missouri Pacific Railroad. Member of United Methodist Church in Hoisington, Kan. Memorial Service to be conducted at Kansas Wesleyan University (graduate of 1940) in the Miller Chapel, 100 E. Claflin, Salina, Kan. on March 23, 2001 at 1 p.m. Those who wish may make contributions in his memory to Evangel Christian Academy, 817 N. Hamilton Rd., Gahanna, Oh. 43230. Inurnment will be at Gypsum Hill Cemetery in Salina, Kan. Local arrangements by SCHOEDINGER NORTHEAST CHAPEL, Gahanna.

BRENNING Hazel Pauline (Schleppi) Brenning, age 88, of Westerville, Sunday, March 18, 2001, St. Ann's Hospital. Life-long member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Westerville. Beloved mother of Lois English, Lester Brenning and Roberta (Gary) Schultz, all of Westerville, Robert (Pamela) Brenning of Urbana, Oh.; also survived by 4 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren; sister, Erma Steen of Stephens City, Va. Preceded in death by husband Russell W. Brenning; parents Lao and Ethel Schleppi; sisters Helen Smith, Mildred Schleppi and Martha Schleppi; son-in-law Don English. Friends may call at the MORELAND FUNERAL HOME, 55 E. Schrock Rd., Westerville, Wednesday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Service will be held Thursday 2 p.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 4686 E. Carter Venice Carter, 80, Thursday, March 15, 2001 at the residence. Member St. Paul AME. Former member of the Goldstar Mothers. Retired employee of Mt. Carmel Hospital. Preceded in death by parents, husband Alphonzia Carter, Sr, daughter Faye Taylor, son Sgt. Gregory Carter and granddaughter Cheryl. Survived by sons, Alphonzia (Shirley), Jr., John (Vantossa), and Raynard Carter; daughters, Shirley Hawkins and Vera E. Carter; 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild; 3 sisters-in-law; 1 brother-in-law; and a host of other relatives and friends, including dear friends, Daisy Brinkley, Helen Ramseur, William McIntosh and Wendell Glasper. CASHMAN Rita Cashman, age 80, Saturday, March 17, 2001, at Riverside Methodist Hospital. She is preceded in death by her husband Richard Joseph Cashman. Survived by sons, Richard (Martha), Daniel, Sean (Susan), and Timothy; daughters, Erin Wright and Mary Colleen (Mark) Burgeson, of Evergreen, Co.; grandchildren, Jason, Brittany, Conner, and Kera; nieces, nephews, and many friends. CLEM Catherine Anne Fitcher Clem, of Columbus, former longtime resident of Lancaster, died Sunday, March 18, 2001 at Kobacker House. She was formerly a Teacher's Aide in Lancaster City Schools, working with special needs children for many years. She was an avid reader and gardener and a member of Grace Bible Church in Canal Winchester. She is preceded in death by her husband William E. Clem. She is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth Anne Clem (Matthew P.) Markwood, of Upper Arlington; grandsons, Wesley and Aaron Markwood; sister, Mary Louise Cook Progoff, of New York, NY. Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, March 20, 2001 at SCHOEDINGER NORTHWEST CHAPEL, 1740 Zollinger Road. A Memorial Service will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 21, 2001 at Grace Bible Church, 424 Gender Road, Canal Winchester. Pastor Jeff Billingsly officiating. Private inurnment Union Cemetery. DICKINSON Edgar Bruce Dickinson, age 77, of Delaware, on Sunday, March 18, 2001 at Grant Medical Center following a heart attack. Survived by wife of 52 years, Carol Ruth Kruse Dickinson; children, Kathleen Ruth (Peter) Matuscak of Columbus, Susan Carol (Robert) Wright of Mantua, Oh., Bruce Brian (Pamela) Dickinson of Sioux Falls, S.D., Pamela Kim (Kenneth) Minard of Delaware, Oh.; grandchildren, Gregory Robert (Lori) Wright, Michelle Susan Wright, Brian Chadwick Dickinson, Benjamin Kenneth Minard, Matthew Aaron Dickinson, Scott Caleb Minard; great-grandchildren, Alexander Jeffrey Wright, Hannah Michelle Wright, Sydney Ann Wright; brother, Owen Dickinson; sister, Martha Jayne Coss. ELLIOTT Bonnie Jean Elliott, age 63, died Sunday, March 18, 2001 at Mt. Carmel Medical Center. Preceded in death by husband Harry and son Harry Jay. Survived by daughter, Gracie Crosby; grandchildren, Kenneth, Chelsa and Anita Crosby; numerous relatives and friends. No calling hours. FLAHERTY James Robert "Bob" Flaherty, age 79, of Columbus, died Sunday, March 18, 2001 at the Villas at St. Therese, surrounded by his family. He was a retired Senior Engineer with Bell Labs (AT&T), an active member of St. Pius X Catholic Church, a Past Grand Knight and 4th degree member Knights of Columbus Council #5253, a U.S. Navy WW II veteran and a member of the Bexley Conservation Club. Bob is survived by his children, Kathleen B. Murray of Flemington, N.J., James Robert (Janet) Flaherty Jr. of Columbus, Kristine Flaherty of Columbus, Jerry P. (Becky L.) Flaherty of Pickerington; grandchildren, Colin Murray, Anne Murray, Jessica Flaherty, Patrick Flaherty, James Flaherty, Nick Flaherty and Zoe Flaherty; brother, Rev. Charles B. Flaherty of Boston, Mass. Bob was preceded in death by his wife Kathryn E. Flaherty, June 3, 1999 and his sister Marie U. Lewis. Friends may visit Wednesday 4-8 p.m. at the DWAYNE R. FOSTER Ramona Nell Foster, age 75, died March 18, 2001 at St. Ann's Hospital. She was employed by the Union Department Stores for 35 years and she was also employed later by the State of Ohio, Department of Aging. She was preceded in death by her husband Charles Foster in 1972. Survived by a sister, Charlotte Vanperson; nephews, Samuel C. and Charles R. Vanperson and Charles' wife, Kathy. Funeral service 1 p.m. Wednesday at the SCHOEDINGER CLEVELAND AVENUE CHAPEL, 2741 Cleveland Ave. at Weber Rd., where friends may call 4-7 p.m. Tuesday. Rev. Fred Ketner officiating. Gardner Richard A. Gardner, age 72, of Columbus, devoted husband, father and grandfather went to be with the Lord Sunday, March 18, 2001. Member of The Living Word Church. Previously captain of the church dart-ball team and a member of the choir. Retired from Columbus Coated Fabrics, Div. of Borden. U.S. Navy veteran. Enjoyed watching the Buckeyes. Preceded in death by wife Fern, daughter Carolyn Hallstrom, granddaughter Michelle Gillotte, 2 brothers and 3 sisters. Survived by sons, Donald and wife, Sue Gillotte of New Albany, Oh., Ray and wife, Linda Gillotte of Rockbridge, Oh.; 8 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
