SPRAGG Ruth Spragg, age 92, died February 13, 2001 at her residence. She was a resident of Upper Arlington. Graduated from North High School in 1927. Attended Ward Belmont in Nashville, Tenn. She received a Bachelor's Degree from Ohio Wesleyan in fine arts. She was also a Girl Scout Leader for 14 years. Preceded in death by father William H. Lauer, mother Minnette J. Lauer, sister Dorothy C. Paulson. Survived by her daughters, Susan Spragg Carr and Sally Spragg Kelly; grandchildren, John (Nancy) Kelly, Kent Kelly, Michael Kelly, Shawn (Elizabeth) Carr, Christopher (Jennifer) Carr, Aaron (Tiffany) Carr; great-grandchildren, Robert, James, John David, Richard, Sarah, Noah, Sierra, Nicholas, Chase and Korall; nephew, Zeph W. Paulson (Kim) and Chelsea. Memorial Service will be February 22 at the SCHOEDINGER MIDTOWN CHAPEL, 229 E. State St. at 7:30 p.m. Family will receive friends prior to service at 6 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her name to the charity of one's choice.

STEWART Jacob Taft Stewart, age 24, Wednesday. Memorial service Saturday 2 p.m., EVANS FUNERAL HOME, 4171 E. Livingston Ave. Rev. Tim Stout officiating.

TAUB Samuel Taub of Columbus. Survived by wife, Alice; daughter, Diane (John) Kraus; son, Marvin Lee (Mary Sue) Taub; grandchildren, Lauren Kraus, Alyssa Kraus, Michelle Taub and Marc Taub. Both Mr. and Mrs. Taub were Holocaust survivors who came to the United States in 1953. Samuel was a manager with the Schottenstein stores for 34 years. While employed at Schottensteins, Samuel received numerous awards for his mentoring and volunteer work with the Columbus Public Schools. He was a member of Agudas Achim Synagogue and their Brotherhood and also was a member of Congregation Tifereth Israel. Funeral service Friday 10:30 a.m. at THE EPSTEIN MEMORIAL CHAPEL, 3232 E. Main St. with Rabbi Gil Steinlauf and Cantor Jack Chomsky officiating. Burial to follow at New Tifereth Israel Cemetery. Shiva will be observed at the Taub residence. Memorials preferred to Mt. Carmel Hospice or Congregation Tifereth Israel.

Thompson Bertha M. "Bert" Thompson, age 77, of Ostrander, died Wednesday, Valentine's Day, February 14, 2001 at The OSU Medical Center after suffering a massive stroke while volunteering at the Windsor Senior Center's meal on Monday. She was employed for over 20 years with Buehlers Grocery Store in Delaware where she had served as manager of the Deli Department and hostess of their restaurant. She formerly was employed with Ranco Control of Delaware. She was a lifetime member of Trinity Lutheran Church and served on the Altar Guild. She attended Watkins High School and for the last 10 years was an active volunteer with the Windsor Seniors. She enjoyed her grandchildren and family, flowers and spending time with the Windsor Seniors. She was born August 8, 1923 in Marysville to the late Jacob and Bertha Matilda Gase Wuertz. She was preceded in death by a son Donald L. Thompson on March 5, 1990, 2 brothers LeeRoy Wuertz and Edward Wuertz and 2 sisters Clara Pauline Bell and Ruth Bywater. She was married to Donald "Van" Thompson on November 26, 1944 at Trinity Lutheran Church and he preceded her in death on January 7, 1990. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Joyce and Ted Beaver, Ostrander; 2 granddaughters, Marianne and Heather Beaver; 3 sisters, Mary (Tex) Beekman, Centerburg, Elsie Wuertz, Columbus and Anna Wuertz, Los Angeles, Calif.; 2 brothers, Victor (Janet) Wuertz, Cardington and Robert (Ruth) Wuertz, Edison; 2 sisters-in-law, Virginia Wuertz and Bev Wuertz, both of Marysville; several nieces, nephews and many friends. Service will be held Saturday, February 17, 2001 at 11 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, Marysville. Rev. Renee Ahern and Rev. John Davoll will officiate and burial will take place at Oakdale Cemetery. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. on Friday at the MANNSMITH-HALE FUNERAL HOME, Marysville. Memorial contributions may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church or the Windsor Senior Citizens in care of the funeral home.

TINSLEY Mrs. Nancy Lee Tinsley, age 85. Funeral service Friday 10 a.m., chapel of DIEHL-WHITTAKER FUNERAL SERVICE, 720 E. Long St. Family will receive friends 9 a.m. until time of service. Interment Evergreen Cemetery.

VANCLEAVE Walter G. Vancleave, Sr., age 82, passed away suddenly on February 13, 2001 at Riverside Methodist Hospital. He served in the U.S. Army during WW II and Korean War. Retired from USAF and Rickenbacker Federal Credit Union. He was born on September 12, 1918 in Henry, Tenn., the son of Walter Merion Vancleave and Estella Bush, both deceased. Preceded in death by brother Merion Vancleave and sisters Lillie Smith, Letha, Minnie Bunn, Sallie, and Ruby Cruse. Survived by wife of 55 years, Mattie; sons, Walter Jr. (Suzanne), Robert (Teresa); daughter, Diane (Andy) Whicker; grandchildren, Walter III (Brenda), John (Nora), Will, Chris Whicker, Olivia, Eric Whicker, Jennifer Whicker; sisters Myrtle Deeter and May Haynes. Family will receive friends on Saturday February 17 from 1-3 p.m. followed by a Memorial Srevice at COOK & SON-PALLAY FUNERAL HOME, 1631 Parsons Ave. In lieu of flowers, friends may contribute in his memory to the Arthritis Foundation or American Heart Assoc.

WEBSTER Alice M. Webster, age 75, Thursday, February 15, 2001 at Mt. Carmel Medical Center. Preceded in death by husband Earl C. Webster. Survived by children, Charlene (Roscoe) Swain and Elva (Ray) Parfitt; brother, Irvin (Faith) Kelly; grandchildren, Travor Swain, Tiffany (Patrick) Gardiner, Tricia (Benjamin) Tatman, Natasha Parfitt and Raymond Parfitt; 4 great-grandchildren. Friends may call at JERRY SPEARS FUNERAL HOME, 2693 W. Broad St., Friday 7-9 p.m., where service will be held 10 a.m. Saturday. Rev. R.M. Swain officiating. Interment Green Lawn Cemetery.

BASCH Maryleone Freund Basch, died February 14, 2001 at Mt. Carmel Medical Center. "Mel" was born in Salt Lake City, Utah. on November 29, 1910. Married for 55 years to the late Lewis R. Basch, DDS, she was the daughter of Rabbi and Mrs. Charles J. Freund. Mrs. Basch was preceded in death by her son Richard L. Basch, DDS and her sister Rosaling Helburn. She is survived by her daughter, Constance Freundlich; daughter-in-law, Sylvia King Basch; grandchildren, Corrine Basch, M.D. and Raven, Victor Basch and Sofia Gothlin, Sarah and Thomas Freundlich, M.D., Cathy and Douglas Richeson; great-grandchildren, Kaia Luna Basch, Anna Elizabeth, Grace Ellin, Joseph Thomas and Lillian Rose Freundlich, Joel Louis and Nathan Douglas Richeson. Mrs. Basch was a graduate of The Ohio State University and a member of Phi Beta Kappa. She is a founding member of Temple Beth Shalom. She was a dedicated volunteer for 30 years at the Columbus Ohio Psychiatric Hospital and founder of the Remembered Patient Program. She typed Braille Books for the blind and was honored for her service with the Mayor's Award. Memorial Service 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Temple Beth Shalom, 5089 Johnstown Rd., New Albany. Rabbi Howard Apothaker officiating. Calling hours 3-5 p.m. Saturday, SCHOEDINGER MIDTOWN CHAPEL, 229 E. State St. Shiva will be observed Monday 7-9 p.m. at the Freundlich residence, 63 S. Dawson. BATTIFARANO (CAITO) Nellie (Caito) Battifarano, age 98, Wednesday, February 14, 2001 at her residence. Preceded in death by husband Nickolas Battifarano; sister Angela Palumbo and Margaret DiPiero; brothers Joseph, Sam, Frank, Mike, Anthony and Philip Caito. Survived by nieces and nephews. BECKER Karl W. Becker, born July 9, 1914 in Columbus, Neb., passed away February 12, 2001 in Columbus, Oh. Graduated from high school in Columbus, Neb. Graduate of Antioch College and The Ohio State University School of Dentistry. Completed internship from The Ohio State University School of Dentistry. Was a Captain in the 10th Photo Reconnaissance Group, United States Army Air Corps, as a Dentist in WW II. Partner in dental practice with William Russell for many years. He practiced dentistry in an exempiary manner in Columbus, Oh. for over 50 years until his retirement in 1995; improving the lives of everyone he knew. He was a man who believed in innovation and skill; approaching every task with the need for perfection. The quality of his technical ability in dentistry was matched only by his caring for the lives of his patients. Long time resident of Upper Arlington and a 40 year plus member of First Community Church he was a caring collector of people, not by design but by his actions. Well remembered for the years he enjoyed as troop leader for Boy Scout Troop 12, a position he held for many years even after his own sons had moved on to other activities. He was a loving husband and father, and dedicated man of his community. Active at Hide-A-Way Hills for 35 years with a cottage where he found much peace and serenity (and one year winning the golf championship). It was where his love of nature will forever be remembered by those who will enjoy the thousands of daffodils and hundreds of dogwood trees he planted over the years. Preceded in death by his bride of 64 years Evelyn M. Becker, by only 26 days and his brother Frank. Survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Michael (Sherry) Becker, Steven (Lisa) Becker; and his grandchildren, Jason E. Becker, Shannon Gray Becker Mink (Christopher) and Jennifer Caroline Becker of Knoxville, Tenn. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to the Boy Scouts of America or to First Community Church Foundation in the name of Karl W. and Evelyn G. Becker. BOND Madge Bond, 58, of London, died at 11:20 a.m. Friday, February 16, 2001 in the Arbors at London Nursing Home. Born December 23, 1943 in West Portsmouth, Oh., she was a daughter of Jake and Virtree (Howard) Howard. She had worked for 5 years as a housekeeper for Madison County Hospital in London. A member of the American Legion Post #105, Ladies Auxiliary, she was also a member of the Eagles Lodge #950, Ladies Auxiliary. Survivors are her husband, Bobby C. Bond; husband's children, Anita Bond Skaggs and Rhonda Bond Jordan, both of West Portsmouth; step-grandchildren, Rusty and Brandon Jordan, Jesse and Evan Skaggs; 2 sisters, Nora Howard Graham of Sturgis, Mich. and Milly Howard Bellomy of Piketon; 2 brothers, Denny Howard and Rodney Hall, both of West Portsmouth; nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and 2 brothers. Friends may call at the EBERLE FUNERAL HOME, London from 5-8 p.m. Sunday and at the ROGER W. DAVIS FUNERAL HOME in West Portsmouth, Oh. from 5-8 p.m. Monday, where service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday with Rev. Bob Davis officiating. Interment will follow in Scioto Memorial Burial Park in Rushtown, Oh.

BRILL Russell Albert Walker Brill, age 73, of Columbus, died Thursday February 15, 2001. Preceded in death by mother Gertrude Graham, first wife Patty J. Brill and niece Susan C. Brill. He is survived by wife, Dorothy D. "Dottie"; brother and sister-in-law, Charles L. and Carole A. Brill; sons and daughters-in-law, Raymond R. "Rusty" and Theresa M. Brill, Kenneth and Sharry Cook; grandchildren, Jennifer L. Brill, Aaron R. Brill, David K. Cook, Amanda B. Cook; nephews and nieces, Charles P. Brill, Patricia A. (Brill) Shaw, Charlene A. (Brill) Krible, Tina L. (Brill) Tackett, Carole A. (Brill) Hale; several other nieces and nephews. He worked 24 years at McGlennon Metal Products, 17 years at Central Ohio Welding and 2 years at Scotland Yard Condo Association. He served with Regular Army-ETO, 1945-1952, U.S. Constabulary, "The Elite Force of the U.S. Army", U.S. Zone Germany, 1st BN Tank Co., 6th Armed Calvary 1st Sgt., 37th MP Co., 37th Infantry Division 1st Sgt., Ohio National Guard. Member American Legion Post 888 and attended the First Baptist Church, Gahanna. His family will receive friends Sunday 5-8 p.m., during which time his casket will be open, at the COTNER FUNERAL HOME, 7369 E. Main St., Reynoldsburg, where his service will be Monday at 11 a.m. with his casket closed. Pastor Tom Dove officiating. Interment Glen Rest Memorial Estate. BRODY Neilan "Neil" Brody, 76, Wednesday, February 14, 2001 in Syracuse, N.Y. Born in Albany, N.Y., he lived in Albany and Columbus, Oh. before moving to Syracuse in October. Survived by wife of 27 years, the former Dorothy Savo; daughters, Kathleen Harrar of Alpharetta, Ga. and Kimberly David of New Paltz, N.Y. COLFLESH Phyllis M. Colflesh, 71, of Atkins, Ar., died Thursday, at her home. She was a native of Columbus. Survivors include her husband, C.A. "Chuck" Colflesh; son, Gordon of Mo.; brothers, Paul and Willis Ulery of Columbus; sisters, Aldene Laver of Sandusky, Brownee Sloyer, Calif. and Vera Boice of Fla.
